What's new

If an India vs Pakistan ODI series were to happen now, what would be the outcome?

India were carrying some over the hill players and the likes of Kohli had a rare bad series. That series proved to be a wake up call for them and they went on to win the Champions Trophy, while we got humiliated. In hindsight, the series win in India proved to be little more than an aberration and a fluke. Same goes from the series in South Africa in 2012-2013, which we won because of Amla's choke.

Getting carried away after a few wins is standard procedure for Pakistani fans. After a few good performances, we think we have become invincible, and it takes a thrashing for us to come back to earth.

While it will be harsh to call our Champions Trophy win a fluke, we cannot deny that we had our fair share of good fortune. There are still plenty of holes in the team because we caught the likes of South Africa, England and India on a bad day,

We can beat these teams in one-off games, but over the course of a series, these things tend to even out. Winning 4 matches does not make us a top team; we are still inferior to India, Australia, England and South Africa, and probably on par with New Zealand.

I honestly do agree with what you say but India only had a few over the hill players such as Sehwag, Gambhir, Ishant but the rest were in pretty good nick and they had the same bowling attack for the 2013 CT with BK, Shami, Jadeja and Ashwin so it was a decent team.

And yeah we were bound to lose that CT given we had Farhat, Kami, Malik (his worst period during his career) and Asad. Looking back it was the worst Pak team I've grown up watching. True a lot of our fans tend to go over the moon after wins like these but being realistic here we've got a long way to go to become an elite ODI team but the foundation is there for us to grab the 4th-3rd spot in the rankings, so currently with the form we've had so far the number 6th ranking is a fair reflection of where we stand as of now.

I somewhat disagree with this CT being a fluke but that drop catch by Perera was one lucky moment which allowed us to sneak through to the semis where we won both matches convincingly. There was a good chance we would've lost to SL and someone like Eng could've gone on to win the CT.

I think as of now we've got the right combination of players to take our ODI team forward and should be looking forward to some ODI series wins.

Massively in our favour and LOL we beat you in your OWN backyard. Are you trying to taunt yourself? :)))
We also beat you in your backyard. What's your point. Current indian team still better than Pakistan. Losing one game will not change that.

Winning tournament matches will not change years of history where Pakistan have completely dominated India in bilaterals.

I think it would be a closely fought series and we will give as good as we get from now on. That final thrashing has well and truly smashed the aura of invincibility that India felt whenever they played us in recent times. Our players can look at them in the eyes without a smidgen of inferiority complex that has been so prevalent over the last decade.

Depends on the type of pitches. If we play in England then Pakistan will win the series comfortably. If its played in UAE then India will win. If its played in India then Pakistan again has equal chance of beating India.

In England : Pakistan 3 - 2 India
In UAE : India 4 - 1 Pakistan
In India : Both teams can win by a margin of 3 - 2

If played in UAE, we'll win if in England, you'll easily win...our batting is still too bad to believe in, but the spinners can do a good job...Malik and Hafeez can act like pillars to Jadeja and ashwin in UAE.

Best part could be if 2 matches are held in Pakistan 2 in india and the last one in Australia...just fantasizing though

Pakistan is worse than other team whilst India is better, but that certainly doesn't mean India is better than Pakistan. Its cricket and you need to see the head to head records.

And the thrash is on the cards...After winning to Srilanka in August, we'll be back to that minnow status

Nice trolling. Why do we need ICC ranking. Try to get in to top 3 first. Then talk about thrashing India or calling India minnows.

:)))

We're the best ODI team in the world. Deal with it. A flawed ranking system that takes results from a number of years into account means absolutely nothing compared to the Champions Trophy.

Pakistan > India. Then, now and always.

india wil win 5-0 series.
not everyday aamir will take first three wickets, fakhar is pure slogger, he will not last long

The longer the series, the more chance India would win it comfertably, they are still a much better ODI side then pakistan despite the result of the CT final.

So you agree that we were the best ODI team between 2013 and 2017? Nice logic.

it would be 3-2 in favour of India. We are still not there when it comes to consistency with Batting. We need to give this young team another year to gel together and win a couple of series.

Pakistan thrashed India in one of the biggest games in ODIs in the last 5 years by being 8th in the ranking table. Ranking does not play any role when it comes to Pakistan vs India, especially considering Pakistan's unpredictability.

It happens in cricket. India was a big underdog in 83 world cup but beat the gaint Windies in finals. Your team played well on that day for sure. Whether your team can maintain that for 3 match or 5 match series is the question. If a series was played between both teams now, I would put my money on India to win the series comfortably.

India being lower in ranking still beat Pakistan in all the key games in 90s but when it comes to bilateral, team with higher rank won most of them.

That's true. That is why I said the series would go to India 3-2 but it won't be easy. One more year of good, consistent performances (especially with the bat) can bring Pakistan on level terms with India.

What many people do not know or remember is after India won 1983 WC final..WI toured India for a 5 ODI series and spanked them 5-0 a month later eventhough India had won both WC league game as well as final.
This did not take glss of World cup win but in a longer series , a surprise one time performance cannot translate into series win.
WI had a rare of day on WC final day.
I strongly believe similar thing happened with India in CT2017 final and to add it Pakistan had one of their better days where everything clicked.
How many times will Hafeez score that fast or Azhar ali + Zaman have a 100 run partnership in a series?
How many times will top 3 of India fail even if its a superb opening spell or how many times will Indian spinner fail to suffocate runs?
