"If Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq did not perform well, then who else did perform well?" : Younis Khan

Younis Khan speaking on TV:

"People [who see me] say start playing again"

"Tours such as New Zealand, Australia and England are done with great planning"

"It appears to me that this tour is planned suddenly and the team is sent there"

"This was such a huge series and you know there is room for a lot of embarrassment [if things go wrong]"

"Team is let down and because of that the nation is let down too"

"It was important for such a tour that they would have gone 2 weeks ahead and played a few tour matches"

"This isnt the UAE that you go there and play one tour match and then go onto play a Test"

"You have all the details of the comments which were made for our retirements and now same people are talking about Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq; I suggest that such people should be brought out into the open and told shut up"

"People who say this are people who have played international cricket themselves and I fail to understand how they can say it"

"This is why I left cricket so that I would not give anyone an opportunity to throw me out"

"Now they are talking about throwing out Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq and Sarfaraz Ahmed"

"Bhai, I ask you, who do you have to replace these players? Have you made some replacements?"

"On such tours, the team is already under stress and they are putting more pressure on them via the media"

"So such people should be told to shut up and they should also be told that this your own team and your own players so back them, there is nothing wrong with that"

"In the first Test, if we had set a target of 200-250 then South Africa team may well have found the going tough"

"If Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq did not perform well, then who else did perform well?"

"At this point, we should not be talking about two players or the captain but the whole team should be discussed"

"Mickey Arthur and Grant flower should also be held accountable but lets leave them aside, the selectors should also be taken to task"

"Haris Sohail went for the tour and is now coming back, who is responsible for that?"

"We need to take the same set of players and sit them down to give them confidence so that they can improve their performance"

"You only get good players from Test cricket and not from T20 or One-Day cricket"

"I hope it doesnt happen that so much pressure is put on Sarfaraz Ahmed that he decides to leave captaincy of ODIs and T20I teams as well as in Tests"

Have to disagree with Younis, Azhar and Asad have been given more than enough chances, they have played 60 plus test matches and have been heavily backed, invested in and have nothing to show for it. Need to make way for younger and more hungry players

Inzi should be forced to explain why he did not select Saad Ali and why he select Haris Sohail

Then how come that Shan Masood, Imam ul Haq and Babar Azam have looked better than Azhar and Asad?

It comes down to the fact that even after all these years Asad and Azhar have not gotten to that level. They still look pathetic on testing conditions.

A bad investment. End of story.

What?
Had these 2 performed even a bit SA would have been chasing 250 in the 1st test!

Also whats their use when we keep losing?:yk

"You only get good players from Test cricket and not from T20 or One-Day cricket" ----This is It... I think he meant domestic/first class?

Now the mindset is relax and chill... the franchises will unearth some fast bowler or a batsmen or a WK from PSL. No need to watch domestic cricket

These guys have been given 2 years of cricket since YK left and they are still failing, yet we shouldnt drop them because of no so called replacements? Wow great pathetic mindset.

So he is actually saying so what if the seniors didnt perform well.why didnt the youngsters step up and take their place.Which some of them actually did btw.
Wow i can not believe that

So people who invest their time and genuinely care about this sport should just zip their mouths and watch the so called 'experience' make a fool of themselves and not even have the right to criticize them.

A retired senior looking after his mates. How shameless do you have to be to make this sort of statement when it comes failing seniors like these 2. Seniors are supposed to perform where other players cannot because they have the experience.

YK reluctant to criticise his former team-mates it seems.

Find new players...heres your answer YK.

If they dont do well, find some more.

If you can find, Hasan, Abbas, Shadab, Faheem, Fakhar, Imam and Asif to name but 7.

Find some more...

why is Yasir being played when the wickets are not spin freindly, who is responsible for yasir being in the playing 11. Im begining to wonder if Surfraz is being told by Inzi Yasir is in your playing 11

the cheif selector and his selection committe need to be looked at.

SA play an all seem attack, Pakistan play a world class spinner.
Pakistans reliance on Yasir has proved wanting, Azar, Fukher can both turn thyre arms along with Asad and Shan so why the need to play a spinner

will they play yasir again in the 3rd test match

Younis wants to believe 7 years of babying these two has not gone to waste.

Err, because not everyone has played the same number of test matches as these two have?

Younis Khan's interviews are such a joke.

Younis Khan isn't going to ridicule his ex-team mates, so hard to understand why some ridiculing his response.

Here to point out ever since rightly pushed in to retirement and not being give the captaincy younis has been angling for coaching/selection job in national set up.
And please, let’s not repeat this tripe about getting here early. Maybe he can enlighten us on how he was the leading light in a team that was shamefully dismissed for 50 or so last time we toured here.

YK may arguably be an ATG as a batsman but his influence off the field has been anything but. Yes the whole team should be looked at in terms of assessment, but you also have to look at performance and expectations - the likes of Imam, Babar and Shan have all produced at least 1 50 in this series and the spotlight is not on them, they are meant to be the weaker batsmen or the lesser ones. Yet, it's Azhar, Asad and Safraz who have failed the most when the expectation on them has been the highest, so of course, when you are looked upon as the key senior players, most of the limelight and the criticism will be levelled on you.

Hopefully YK will raise a cake to that!

Oh please! The biggest supporter of a non-performing player ascribing nefarious motives to a player he hated, despite YK being our arguably greatest test player ever.

You need to have some introspection dude when it comes to your judgement.

I think YK is being far too easy on his former team mates, but what would you prefer? If he throws them under the bus, he will also be criticized.

YK is doing what he thinks best in terms of supporting his team mates, that's all.

No, I really dont.

Have to disagree with YK here, both of them are on the wrong end of age and if they still cannot be the backbone of the team then they are just bad investments.

Looks like Younis held back with his true thoughts. Probably did't want to criticize his former teammates.

If I remember correctly, Younis pretty much forced his way to the ODI team months leading up to WC15 after crying that he was an important part... got put in his place within the first two games of the tournament.

Look I love the guy, top 5 favourite Pak players ever for me, but regardless of the result in this test I hope that Imam/Fakhar/Babar/Shan score heavy and Asad/Azhar don't so he can be put in his place again for making such weak arguments in favor of these "senior pros".

Fed with all the comments.
"Do we have replacement of azhar asad sarfraz etc".
How would you know if you don't givr chance to domestic performers...
Give them a chance...

It's hard to tell from his demeanor on the field that this guy is such a huge narcissist. His lack of self awareness is absurd.

He has a point about forward planning. The only overseas tour where Pakistan have been impressive in the last few years was the 2-2 series Vs England and they prepared a long training camp with the army hence the pushups. Abbas was in England early playing county so had figured the lengths.

When Pakistan lost 3-0 to SA in 2013, Misbah said more or less the same about prepping these players for conditions like this but sadly some things just don't change for various reasons.

Even if we did bring in the better performing domewtic players, if they have a poor series, this forum would be full of people calling Shafiq and Azhar cowards for running off and leaving the juniors after feasting on UAE and so on.

Point to note - it was Younis who pointed to Shan a slight fault in his stance the Test before he made the match winning Ton Vs SL. Even if his comments are intended to ease the pressure on a struggling team, I like to think he knows what he's talking about when it comes to the technical stuff.

He is kinda right.Rather than fixing our cricket at grassroots we still believe changing players is a good option. After few years people would be calling for heads of these Saads,Sauds etc.Sarfaraz was hyped to the moon after 1-1 againist Eng but now people are calling for him to be dropped. There is no player development in Pakistan and players themselves dont care to improve. Now some want Umar Akmal back but soon will get tired of him as he will repeat same mistakes such as dancing down the track to get stumped or giving catch in circle.
Lot of Pakistanis think Babar Azam has won the battle againist KL Rahul for best emerging batsman but I will assure you Rahul will come back as better cricketer in a few years than Babar due to lack of player development in Pak cricket

Did India have replacement of Sehwag Dravid Tendulkar and VVS? No. But they were retired and others came in.

Other day Wasim Akram said something similar. You keep giving new players chances till you get someone good. Thats how the game goes.

Younis Khan should count himself lucky that he's not playing here. He would be out in single digits on these tracks as well. Makes sense for him to back Asad and Azhar in that context.

He is my number one candidate to replace Arthur at some point in the future.

He is my number one candidate to replace Arthur at some point in the future.

Wouldn't bet against it.

But the problems does not end with simply changing the coach of the first team. If Younis is to be employed as a coach, then he needs to go and take the U-15s under his wing. But Pakistani ex-players ego issues don't allow them to take on a role that is less than the first team as it is considered something beneath their stature.

“People [who see me] say start playing again"

He had to say this. :))
Wasn’t he part of the team that folded for 49?

That's why i hate Pakistani former players because never i saw a Pakistani former Player giving sensible comments..
Mr Younis do you know Azhar, Asad, imam, and Sarfaraz have destroyed pak team

It doesn’t get highlighted enough, but since the retirement of Younis and Misbah, Shafiq has convincingly outperformed Azhar.

We keep on making blunderous selections and then we blame the system of not producing quality cricketers. Abbas was picked based on domestic performance and look what he has done. Why don’t we get the best batsmen and then give them a solid run before saying there are no good alternatives. Sorry I clearly disagree as the current lot in South Africa surely isn’t the best. Fakhar, Imam are surely not ready for Test cricket and deserving players like Saad Ali, Fawad Alam, Abid Ali, Saud Shakeel guys who have scored consistently at first class are being ignored
