"If I apply for the Head Coach role, I will resign from the Cricket Committee" : Misbah-ul-Haq

Misbah-ul-Haq at a media interaction today:

"The players who have been selected for the provincial teams, their previous performances in FC or Grade 2 cricket should've been kept in mind. We'll try to review that and to ensure that all the performing players have been picked in teams. We will try to ensure all the players are there on merit"

"My input was included for the members of the ongoing camp, overall we are trying to focus on the centrally contracted players and those who have been recently with the team"

"Hasnain was a part of our plans and we spoke to him, he was coming on the 22nd but he pulled out because he has a contract at the CPL"

"I haven't applied for the Head Coach role. All the talk in the media are just rumours. I am a member of the cricket committee. Since we don't have a selection committee or team management, I am holding a camp to prepare the players. It's not final whether I will apply for the role or not"

"Former players have their own opinions. I have done Level 2 coaching courses here and also from the ECB, perhaps they don't know about that"

"The decision about the captain depends on the cricket board. It depends on whether we want to separate the captaincy if the load is too much on one person, or continue with one captain in all formats. It depends whether we have the suitable personnel for that"

"There is a lot of speculation going on. I have played a lot of cricket and know these players well, I know what preparations are required to ready players for international cricket. I'll try to help the players out for the upcoming season"

"We have included mostly players who are centrally contracted, we haven't included many batsmen from outside. When the selection committee comes, they will look at the performers. We had a limited number of players we could accomodate. There are so many players who have performed well and we can't pick them all"

"If I apply for the Head Coach role, I will resign from the Cricket Committee"

"I think as soon as you have a new system in place, you slowly refine it and make it better. That's where this process will go"

"The internationally required standards of fitness aren't hidden. Our team has a lot of room for improvement and there has also been improvement already. We want to work hard in these 3 weeks so that the players are carrying good fitness into the season. But to attain those levels, I will try my utmost to get players to make fitness into a habit and a lifestyle, so that fitness problems don't come up again"

"In this camp for the first 2 days, it's not just the training but we're looking at the sleeping habits, food, calories, body weight and fat level. I will try to get us to go towards the ideal fitness levels"

"The approach towards fitness is simple, you have to be very professional. You can't compromise on your discipline as a player and that is my approach. Whatever we're doing and the perimeters we're setting need to be followed. Once it becomes a habit, you don't even think about it. Training and food habits need to become a lifestyle"

"There is a misconception amongst the players about this as well. This camp is just to ready some players so that the management and selection committee has data about the players. But the team of 15 won't necessarily be from these players. Any player in domestic cricket who is performing and has good fitness can be selected. We could have picked a lot of players for this camp but we couldn't accomodate more"

"Even when I was playing cricket with SNGPL, Islamabad United or Peshawar Zalmi, specially with SNGPL, for the past 7-8 years I have been playing with players but also guiding or coaching them which I have enjoyed. Once you're captain then you get an idea of quite a lot of things. Your thinking changes once you're not playing because you can solely focus on all the other players"

"A time comes where you need to look towards new players so after retirements of bowlers, we need to look at those who are performing and have good fitness levels. There's a lot of young fast-bowlers. We will keep an eye on them and see which ones can serve Pakistan in the long format in future"

"In the current system, the selection committee selects players and when the XI plays then no one owns the decisions if the XI is not correct. If the coach is also the chief selector then there is no place to hide, he is completely responsible. But there is the question of how to manage that, how does one keep an eye on all the players and who are your helping hands"

"Final selection is not just based on fitness, other things are also taken into account such as performances and attitude as well as team requirement. It's possible that some players top the tests but there is no spot in the team for them. That happened with me also, for 5-6 years. But we will try that players who are performers and have very good fitness levels get a chance to represent Pakistan"

This coach search has been a shambles.

There's still time, Misbah may apply and I hope he comes, he will save our test cricket .

You mean Sarfraz AKA the man who averages 25 as Test captain ?

Astounding how everyone else has been sacked but Sarfraz.

Oh I hate sarfraz even more than Mickey. Sarfraz absolutely needs to be sacked , I have no clue why he's still captain. Maybe they will appoint new captain after a new coach and selector are hired?

I also think after discussions with the new coach and selection committee captaincy decision will be taken.

I think Misbah won't apply. He's aware of the overlap. And I don't think he'll necessarily want to stand in the way of a good coach, he's been tasked with a job and sure he'll do it with professionalism and what's best for Pakistan.

I think the only way he'll apply is if there are not suitable candidates for the job. Then he might as well.

Dean Jones will be the head coach with Misbah being mentor and fitness/fielding coach.

Why so much focus on Test cricket? ODI’s holds the most precise trophy. So Mickey making our ODI team better is a good thing.

Looks like Misbah is going to make the cut.

But not as a head coach

HC: D Jones
Assistant Coach / Batting Coach cum Selector: MuH
Bowling Coach: M Akram

6 Regional Coaches cum Selectors

Rashid Latif
M Waseem
Inzamam uH
Moin Khan
Abdur Rehman
Younis Khan

U19 Coach cum Selector
Saqlain Mushtaq

Test cricket is the best and purest form of the game. Teams that have w at least a decent test team tend to perform in ODIs as well.

Not sure if this will happen but personally I like the setup.

Much better organization. Only change I would suggest is instead of Batting Coach, Misbah should be either Assistant to Jones (One level lower than HC) or Director or PAK National Cricket Teams (One level above National & Junior Team's HC), which includes National Team, PAK A Team, PAK U19 team & PAK U16 team.

Don't think Misbah is qualified enough to be a specialist batting coach, which is a subject matter expert job and needs lots of technical knowledge. Misbah is quite experienced as batsman/cricketer, but the requirement for batting coach is a bit different. Also, Misbah with his UAE batting technique not going to help players much against bounce & movement. PCB MUST hire an ECB/ACB/CSAF Level 3 (at least) specialist batting coach for long-term; may be two is better - 2nd one for NCA (supporting Saqline), developing fundamentals of PAK Juniors. If a boy keeps playing hard ball cricket till 23-25 with Fakhar Zaman like technique, batting coach at International level won't help much.

Others are very good choices, though not sure if Inzi would take that role.

ODI cricket is our bread and butter.

Pretty much. It is the most important format in terms of the trophies it holds. Being a good ODI team is very important to win the most precious trophy of them all.

Test cricket is the best and purest form of the game. Teams that have w at least a decent test team tend to perform in ODIs as well.

Test is a best format for cricket lovers who want to see unlimited days of Cricket. However it is not the best format in terms of prestige. The best trophy in cricket belongs to ODI. The thing is during Misbah’s tenure as captain our ODI team suffered while our Test team succeeded. By looking at his history it could very well be a possibility that we begin to slump further down in ODI cricket while improving our Test cricket. If he was to take over. So this side of me fears for the worse.

Mmmm...he was invilved in Mickey's sacking...how can he now apply for coaches role.
Only in Pak...

This coach search has been a shambles.

It was always going to be: international coaches can see the shelf life of the Pakistani. I could be wrong but I don’t see many folks breaking down the door to apply.
Most while probably sympathize with Mickey so would it objectively find difficult to do anything better or different.

"Hasnain was a part of our plans and we spoke to him, he was coming on the 22nd but he pulled out because he has a contract at the CPL"

So thats why Hasnain was not in the camp. But that is strange that PCB would give approval to him to play in CPL, when he should be getting ready for the first class season. He is not going to learn anything playing in CPL.

Legend! Pakistan is cursed with the worst fans. Misbah will do justice to any role he gets.

Too late.

This absurd proposal raises enormous questions about Misbah’s ethical standards and integrity.

You cannot be a member of a committee which dismissed a set of people and then resign and think that you can ethically apply for the vacancy you created.

He has a Conflict of Interest and should be formally banned from applying for any of the vacated positions for a minimum period of Five Years.

It is appalling that such a senior figure is incapable of grasping a disqualifying Conflict of Interest.

Misbah ul Haq should be forced into resigning from all positions from Pakistan Cricket for eternity

Developing healthy dietary and training habits are among the key areas of focus for former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, as he takes charge of a 17-day training camp that begins in Lahore on Thursday, 22 August.

Misbah, who captained Pakistan into his early forties, knows a thing or two about staying fit. He now wants to pass on his experiences to the next generation of players, with an emphasis on long-term habit formation and healthy routines.

"My aim is to get the players to inculcate habits on a routine basis, as part of their lifestyle, to minimise chances of fitness issues in the future," Misbah said on the eve of the camp.

"During this camp, we will focus not only on [physical] training, but also sleeping habits, dietary habits, calorie intake, body-weight level, and maintaining fat level. I will try to focus on those aspects and work towards an ideal level of fitness for a sportsperson.

"You can't compromise on discipline as a player, and that is my target for the next few days. The players have to follow the goals and parameters set for themselves. Once you fall into a habit, you don't even have to think about it – it becomes a part of your life. That is my approach and that is what I will try to inculcate in the players."

In recent times, Pakistan have shown visible improvement in overall fitness standards, as reflected in their fielding these days. Players such as Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq are regarded as high-quality fielders. Misbah acknowledged the improvements, but said deficiencies remained.

"There's scope for improvement in our team. We want to get up to the mark with internationally-required fitness standards. There has been noticeable improvement in our standards of late. That improvement can be seen during the fitness sessions, but there are some deficiencies and we're trying to get the boys ready for the upcoming season with suitable fitness standards."

Misbah's training camp stint is a stopgap arrangement, as the Pakistan Cricket Board hunts for a new head coach after opting against renewing Mickey Arthur's contract, following the team's sub-par performance in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019. Misbah clarified that he isn't in the running for the full-time position at the moment.

"I haven't applied for a coaching role, and any media reports to the contrary are rumours," he said. "I've taken level two coaching training from here and from the ECB, but there's nothing final as to whether I'm actually applying for the role."
