"If Misbah-ul-Haq can play until 43, I am sure Virat Kohli can play until he is 44" : Shoaib Akhtar

Shoaib Akhtar left an imprint on every Indian mind with those two yorkers that broke through the defences of Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar in that unforgettable 1999 Eden Gardens Test.

Akhtar could not have announced his arrival as a fast bowler in a more emphatic fashion. He may have never hit the heights of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, but he became arguably the most feared bowler in cricket history, thanks to his frightening speed.

"You know when I first came to international cricket, it wasn't easy even for someone like Sachin to play me because I was bowling so quick. When I first played international cricket, Sachin was in his 10th year in international cricket and he had to face me, Glenn McGrath, Wasim, Waqar. But he still went on to score many more hundreds to become the only player to score 100 international centuries. That showed the ability of the man," Akhtar, who retired from the game in 2011 with 178 Test wickets and 247 ODI scalps, told Khaleej Times during a free-wheeling chat in Dubai on Tuesday.

The man who grew up idolising Waqar Younis then predicted that Virat Kohli has what it takes to break his idol Tendulkar's record of 100 international centuries.

On Monday, the 29-year-old Kohli scored his 50th international hundred in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, a stadium where Akhtar became part of the fast bowling folklore all those years ago.

"Virat Kohli is a modern-day great. When it comes to run chases, no one has ever shown better understanding of pacing an innings. Yes he has 50 international centuries now. I think he is the only player who can break Tendulkar's record. But there is no pressure on him. He should just go out there and enjoy the game. He should just look after himself.

"If Misbah-ul-Haq can play until 43, I am sure Virat can play until he is 44. If he plays that long and if he continues to score the way he is doing now, I have no doubt that he is the only one who can do it. In fact, he can hit 120 centuries," he added.

"But comparing him to Sachin is not justified. Sachin was an all-time great. In today's era, Virat Kohli is the greatest batsman.

"It would have been great if I had played against him a bit more. Unfortunately he was too young towards the end of my career. He only faced one ball from me in Sri Lanka.

"I was struggling with my knee. Then I remember this young kid with a lot of tattoos in his arm who was shuffling around the crease. But he had a spark and we all discussed about it in the Pakistan dressing room."

It was that India series in 1999 that made Shoaib Akhtar. The Rawalpindi Express admitted that he is very fond of India. "You know I have utmost respect for India and its people. They have launched me as a brand ambassador for their news channels. You know I am probably the only one who probably had a live show in Shivaji Park when the Navratri was going on. But there were thousands of people standing there and listening to me. That's the kind of love I have got from India," he said.

"Even in matches, we must always show respect. It's fine to lose a game. Hats off to Kohli who went to the Pakistan dressing room after the Champions Trophy final and congratulated our players. He spoke very highly of the Pakistan team. You know he is not only a great cricketer, he is a great ambassador for India as well."

Not everyone is as stubborn and clings onto the side as if it is their personal property.

Don't see it. Not every player can play till 44. Virat started play in international cricket at a much younger age than Misbah did so it's a bit difficult to keep the motivation till your 44. Furthmore there is a lot of cricket that is played now.

Don't see Kohli playing till 40.

Kohli will have much more self respect and will leave on a good note rather than prolonging his career pointlessly.

Kohli will retire in the 30s. For him it’s all about hunger. Once it dies down he will retire.

Plus the guy will retire comfortably with his millions in tact. He will have no desperation or need to play so long.

Kholi should retire after 2019 world cup and takes a two year break from cricket.... Makes a comeback to play for another 5-7 years.

I'm certain he's already mapped out his retirement with the WC 2023 in India being his last tournament.

That would mean Kohli retires at 35.

India plays far too much cricket for someone to keep playing until 40+. It's absurd especially with the IPL.

Won't it be lovely if in Kohli's last match he suffers a heartbreaking defeat from us.... :ashwin

Misbah is a Pakistani star.

Not a legend but just what our Test team and country needed after the 2010 fixing fiasco.

Some people have short memories or wait for opportunities to keep demonising the guy which is so unfair.

I don't care he played till 42, no one else could replace the role he played.

Except that the Akhtar himself couldn't play on until that age. Langra.

Jeez give the guy a break he played because he could - he had the passion, hunger and ability! Misbah at 43 was still fitter than Akhtar at 30

Playing till 44 years? Not going to happen with the volume of cricket Indians play.

Kohli will retire way before that. He is isn't going to play into his late 30's forget about 40's.

I don't think he had any tattoos on his arm back then.

Indians are playing lots lots lots of cricket, i don't think he will be able to continue after age of 40.

Shoaib doesn't really mean it, it was just a way to try and have a dig at Misbah. The poor guy is struggling for material since Misbah retired :))

You need fearsome fast bowlers to keep Test cricket alive, says Shoaib Akhtar

For a man who became famous for terrorising the batsmen with his lightning quick deliveries, Shoaib Akhtar pauses every now and then to give an honest opinion on a matter that is close to his heart.

It's been six years since the Rawalpindi Express quit the game he enthralled. But his eyes sparkle even now when you ask him about fast bowling.

He even feels that it's the fast bowlers who hold the key to Test cricket's future.

"The talent is diminishing when it comes to fast bowling," Akhtar told Khaleej Times during an interview in Dubai.

"You don't see many fast bowlers coming in and bowling at 95 miles per hour to terrorise the batsmen. There are not many great fast bowlers these days. You only have Dale Steyn and Mitchell Starc now. Cricket lack those fearsome characters these days. You need those sort of fast bowlers to keep Test cricket alive. I think the bigger players in ICC need to do something about it."

Test cricket, according to Shoaib, was far more exciting in his era, thanks to the thrill provided by quick bowlers like him and the fascinating battles they produced with some great batsmen.

"That was our forte back in the 1990s. We used to produce so many good fast bowlers - bowlers who could consistently bowl at 94 miles per hour. So these fast bowlers we had because of the inspiration that we had in Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and especially Imran Khan. We bowled as fast as we could and we terrorised the batsmen as much as we could."

The current Pakistan team is brimming with talented young fast bowlers, but Shoaib, who formed a deadly attack with Wasim and Waqar at the turn of the century, rues the lack of one quality in them!

"They are not quick," Shoaib quipped.

"But they are good enough fast bowlers. Hasan Ali, Mohammad Amir, Rumman Raees, (Usman Khan) Shinwari are not as quick, but they can run through opposition batting line-ups. Our bowlers put so much pressure on Indian batsmen in the Champions Trophy final and they just couldn't cope with that. They are good fast bowlers who are creating that magic."

Back in the late 1990s, it was on the dry Sharjah wickets that Shoaib Akhtar first showed his ability to bowl those magical spells.

"When I first came to play in Sharjah in 1998, they told me that they would consider me as a good fast bowler only if I could take wickets and win matches for Pakistan on dry wickets. And I went on to take lot of wickets, thanks to my reverse swing. I was named the man-of-the series and they gave me a beautiful car. I kept that car for the longest period of time," he smiled.

Finally, Shoaib opened up on the curious case of Babar Azam, the 23-year-old Pakistan batsman who has struggled in Test cricket despite making a phenomenal start in the one-day game.

"He gets an open field in one-dayers. There are not many people standing in the circle. But he struggles when the field comes in the circle in Test cricket," Shoaib said.

"He should get the art of Test cricket and play his natural game. If you are not able to find the gaps in Test cricket, then obviously there is some kind of problem in your technique. You need to score runs in Test cricket and play with people's mind. Babar Azam needs to prove himself as a Test match batsman."

Only difference is Virat didn't start his international career on the wrong sides of 30. Not really a good comparison form Shoaib...but can't expect any better

He will be an underperformer in 2019 WC which is going to be held in England.

However, I expect him to end up as one of the leading run scorer in 2023 WC and retire by winning his team the WC tournament going to be held in India in 2023.
