"If the domestic structure isn't good, national team can't give consistent performances": Wasim Khan
Revamped Domestic Structure To Be Result-oriented: MD PCB
LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - APP - 29th Jul, 2019 ): Managing Director, Pakistan Cricket board, Wasim Khan has said that Pakistan's domestic cricket is not catering the needs of modern day quality cricket and it is being revamped to make it challenging and result-oriented.
"Our international cricket level is mediocre despite the fact that we had a good cricketing history. Any country's cricket bases upon its domestic cricket and if its domestic structure is not good, its national team can't give consistent performance," he said here on Monday.
"Although there is a possibility that the team may play some exceptional cricket and register victories, but even then its performances will not be consistent. We need to revamp the existing domestic structure so that it may start producing better and consistent performances," he added.
"In new domestic structure, we have made teams of six provinces, where although the quality has been preferred over quantity.
We need quality cricket and quality players as only it can help in improving Pakistan cricket. Around 30 to 32 contracted players and 190 plus young players will be part of the first class cricket," he asserted.
Wasim said, "Total 90 cities will hold the inter-city and intra-city cricket, which will provide chances to a number of young cricketers to showcase their talent. They will be paid well through their provinces and the best lot will also be given chance at first class level. The purpose of all these is to make domestic cricket highly challenging and quality-oriented." To a query, he replied: "We will hold this first class season under the new domestic structure and in case, we don't get approval its approval as we are awaiting its approval from the Prime Minister, we also have plan B, and the season will then be played as it was played earlier."

PSL a gateway to bringing back international cricket: PCB MD
LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Managing Director (MD) Wasim Khan on Monday said that Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020 would serve as a gateway to bringing back international cricket to the country.
“The matches of the next edition of the PSL, to be played at Lahore, Karachi, Multan and Rawalpindi, will restore the confidence of the foreign players and the teams in Pakistan and will portray an enhanced image of the country with security and other aspects suitable for staging international cricket in Pakistan,” he told the media at Gaddafi Stadium.
The PCB official said that prior to holding the PSL, Pakistan would be hosting two test series of the ICC Test Championship against Sri Lanka in September this year.
“I think this event will be a big step forward for persuading the foreign teams to visit Pakistan in near future,” he added.
Wasim disclosed that he was pleading Pakistan’s cricket case at the highest forums and cricket committees by using his expertise and personal relations with former cricket captains, players, notables attached with the game in various capacities.
“I will be travelling to England on August 9 to attend the MCC World Cricket Committee meeting to present Pakistan’s case,” he said, adding, “I have been specially invited by the committee to give a detailed presentation on security arrangements/measures, stadium and allied facilities of cricket in Pakistan and I am confident that the World Cricket Committee, which is a strong voice in world’s cricket will join hands with Pakistan for bringing back international cricket to the country.”
He disclosed that a proposal is under discussion with the MCC to send its team to Pakistan on a short visit to play matches.
“These are the confidence-building measures which will supplement our ongoing efforts for ensuring the return of international cricket to our country,” he asserted.
Wasim Khan said all the members of the committee who are former stalwarts of the game are eager to lend support to Pakistan so that it should come out of isolation as no foreign teams are visiting Pakistan for quite a long time.
He said that a high power delegation of cricket from Australia will be visiting Pakistan in September to assess security situation and arrangements being made for the safety of the foreign players and teams.
“This visit will be followed by visit of another such delegation from English and Wales Cricket Board in October and for us these two visits are very significant for narrating the ground realities of resumption of international cricket in Pakistan,” said the PCB official.
“We are confident that with such important visits, we will be able to plead our case in a positive manner and the foreign delegates will be reviewing all the security arrangements and allied matters by themselves than making up their mind and finally sharing their positive input with their respective governments and the ICC for taking into consideration of sending their teams to Pakistan in due course of time,” said Wasim.
To a question, he said that the entire edition of the PSL 5 being staged in different venues in Pakistan will take the charm of the event to the maximum and add festivity and extraordinary interest of the fans in every match.
“I think it will be a profit-earning aspect for the franchisers as well as for the PCB because holding of matches at a foreign soil always proved an expensive venture with major share of income spending on holding of matches and on logistics,” he asserted.
“Our main objective is to focus on ending Pakistan’s isolation in international cricket at home and we are making all-out efforts to see our cricket arenas full with audience with top-notch foreign teams playing in near future,” he added.

PCB MD hopes for progress towards resumption of bilateral cricket ties with India
Pakistan Cricket Board Managing Director Wasim Khan is optimistic that there could be progress in the coming months towards resumption of full bilateral cricket ties between Pakistan and India which remain suspended since 2007.
Talking to local media in Lahore on Monday on completion of six months in the PCB, Wasim said relations between the Pakistan and Indian cricket boards have been very good.
"Unfortunately bilateral cricket ties between the two countries is governed and influenced by political and diplomatic ties. But we are hopeful that things are moving in the right direction now," Wasim said.
"I think we will see ice melt in coming months and progress being made now. It is important for both countries to have regular bilateral cricket ties," he said.
Wasim said indications of this had come when the ICC President Shashank Manohar supported the appointment of PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani to head the ICC's Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee.
"Another indicator came at the last Asian Cricket Council meeting when India delegates supported giving hosting rights to Pakistan for next year's Asia Cup T20 event," he added.
Wasim said the Indian Board had also asked its government for clearance to host the Pakistan women's team in October for the ICC Women's Cricket Championship matches.
Pakistan and India are not scheduled to play in the ICC World Test Championship. Bilateral cricket ties have been suspended since 2007 although Pakistan did tour India for a short limited over series.
The two teams, however, meet in ICC and Asian Cricket Council events.
A major indicator of ice melting in sporting relations between Pakistan and India has also come on the tennis court when the Indian Tennis Federation confirmed it would be sending its squad to Islamabad for the Davis Cup tie next month.
This will be the first time both countries will meet on a tennis court after 13 years.

Imam ul Haq apologises for online scandal involving multiple women
Controversial Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq, nephew of legendary Inzamam ul Haq, has tendered unconditional apology for being involved in an online scandal with multiple women and the cricket board has let him off with a reprimand.
The Pakistan opener, whose place in the side has always been under scanner for allegedly being a product of nepotism, found himself in trouble when a few women posted screen shots of his objectionable whatsapp conversations with them and accused him of misleading them.
"Imam was remorseful and has apologised for what all has happened. But we have told him in clear terms although this is his personal and private matter but we expect our players to adhere to the highest standards of ethics and discipline," PCB MD Wasim Khan said on Monday.
Wasim said the board had viewed the matter seriously and spoken to Imam about it.
"We don't like to comment on personal affairs of a player but we expect that our centrally contracted players will also show more responsibility being ambassadors of Pakistan cricket and Pakistan. Hopefully we will not see such incidents again.

Pakistan to host Australia, England cricket teams soon: Wasim Khan
Lahore - Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Managing Director Wasim Khan has said that Pakistan is gradually moving towards revival of full-fledged international cricket as it is going to host cricketing nations like Australia and England soon.
“After a long time, the Chief Executive Officers of Australia and England cricket boards are visiting Pakistan in September and October respectively to assess the security situation and arrangements being made by us for the safety of foreign players and teams,” Wasim Khan told the journalists here at the PCB headquarters on Monday.
“In September, a delegation led by Chief Executive Officer of the Cricket Australia (CA) Kevin Roberts will visit Pakistan followed by the visit of England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) delegation led by its CEO Tom Harrison in October,” he said.
“Both these visits are very important for us as the foreign delegates will themselves visit the venues and inspect the security measures and overall situation in the country, and they will find it surely in contrast to what is being portrayed by the foreign media. Hopefully, they will share very positive input with their respective governments and the ICC for taking into consideration of sending their teams to Pakistan in due course of time,” the MD added. We will also hire qualified young coaches to infuse a new life in the coaching system of NCA at a later stage.”
Wasim also clarified that he preferred to take up responsibility in the PCB on less salary to serve Pakistan cricket. “The salary and perks, I had been enjoying in England were far better than I am now earning at the PCB, but I decided so just because of serving Pakistan cricket and taking it to new heights.”
He said positive criticism is always welcome but negative campaign by a certain media against him presenting a wrong perception and picture about his salary and benefits. “It is not going to serve any purpose nor will discourage me in any manner. But this undue criticism is creating confusion and sending a wrong message to international community.”
