Cricket World Cup 2019, is still 2 years away. However 2 players who are at the wrong side of 35+ age bracket, they will experience significant deterioration in their reflexes, running between the wickets and over all stamina to compete at the highest level. (Shoaib and Hafeez)
Umar Akmal will be relatively still young during 2019 World Cup, he will be 29. While Shoaib Malik will be 38 and Hafeez will be 37. Given the amount of stick Umar Akmal has received recently, he has matured a lot, now he he knows that without him, Pakistan has won a Global Tournament, therefore he needs the team desperately rather than team needs him. I have a feeling this time Umar Akmal will deliver and might not be dropped again, secondly he has a competition with his own cousin Babar Azam.
Cousin rivalries always bring the best out of no-where. Imran Khan wanted to do better than Javed Burki, Jahangir Khan and Majid Khan. He did it in the end. Umar Akmal has all the tools to be successful at highest level. Under Brendon McCullum at Lahore Qalandars he will further enhance his expertise. Now the question is who goes out ? Hafeez is a bowling all-rounder. He can give you economical 6-7 overs easily with an odd wicket. Shoaib Malik who is not part of Test Cricket anymore is only playing as a pure batsman and has not delivered lately.
It will be suitable in the long run to bring Umar Akmal back into the team while replacing Shoaib Malik. Secondly Umar Akmal can hang around till 2023 world cup.
He is also a wicket keeper, if Sarfraz wants to take a mini break as a wicket keeper during an ODI match, Umar Akmal can be a stand-in wicket=keeper as well. (Just as Javed Miandad was on few occasions).
People do talk about his temperament and few off-the field issues, but i think this time it will be a different version of him (if given a chance).
