When Moeen Ali was taken aside by Joe Root in Christchurch last month and told he would sit out the final instalment of England’s troubled Test winter, the overriding emotion that followed was not one of frustration.

Having never before been dropped during a 50-cap run in the side – one that was interrupted only once by injury – Moeen actually thanked Root for his honesty and sticking by him for so long. But by his own admission, this hook from the stage should have come sooner.

England suspected ball tampering by Australia at Perth, says Alastair Cook

“When I didn’t play the last Test in New Zealand it was a relief,” says Moeen at the Taj hotel in Mumbai during what is a hectic Indian Premier League schedule with his new team, Royal Challengers Bangalore.

“I could have been dropped three Tests earlier – I probably should have been – but Joe said he sees me as a match-winner and, with 50 matches of experience, they wanted to give me a longer run. It was almost like: ‘Right, now I can actually work on my game and mentally have a break from the pressure of playing.’ When it’s my time again, I will be ready.”

But how did it come to this? Only last year Moeen was the toast of the England team, with the beaming smile that sits above a luxuriant beard dominating the sports pages during a man-of-the-series performance against South Africa. His 252 runs and 25 wickets – the latter including a hat-trick at The Oval – was an English record for an all-rounder over four Tests.

The Ashes, however, was a different story. Injured in the buildup, Moeen went on to average 19 with the bat and 115 with the ball over the course of the 4-0 defeat. His own appraisal reveals something of an identity crisis for a player whose selfless, team-first approach had seen his role forever in flux.

“I have been up and down the batting order and it’s difficult. People don’t always realise that. If you look at my last 18 months, I went to from batting four and five in India – scoring two hundreds – then to No 7 as second spinner at home before dropping to No 8. When we got to Australia I was down to bat six, then went to seven when the series started. You don’t really know your role.

“You do your best but I think I’m going to try and get back in as a batsman first, spinner second. The problem is, because I have played more than others – say if Jack Leach is in the same team, or Liam Dawson or Adil Rashid before – I’ll still get seen as the senior spinner because I’m more experienced.”

Has he been too nice for his own good? “I have been told in the past that’s my downfall but I’d rather be too nice to be honest. I set out in cricket to make friends. I’d rather people say they enjoyed playing with him and he’s a good guy, not he’s a good player but a bit of a so and so.”

Moeen has always viewed himself as a batsman first and only Root, 11, and Alastair Cook, seven, can boast more than his five Test centuries since his debut in 2014. However the 30-year-old talks of his game “missing something” – perhaps a ruthlessness – and he cannot yet put his finger on it.

Gary Kirsten, the former South African left-hander who heads up the RCB batsmen, is being tapped up for insight but whatever follows, we all hope it does not come at the expense of those buttery drives.

The above could paint Moeen as a cricketer licking his wounds but it could not be further from the truth. Just as he did not get carried away last year, he is not down now either. He is loving his time in the IPL even if a lack of game time hampers his Test ambitions in the short-term.

“If you asked me to play in the IPL for free, I would have done,” says Moeen, whose auction price of £187,000 was around a seventh of that of Ben Stokes. “I literally would have come for the experience, especially with the players at RCB like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Brendon McCullum and Quinton de Kock.

“And I’m wanting to train all of the time. Even today we’re not down to but I have asked to do some extra time. Sometimes in the same environment, you maybe lose a bit of that. So I think the IPL has come at a great time, getting different ideas from new voices.”

Such as? “For example I have never worked on power-hitting. I’ve just always batted and when days have gone my way, it’s been nice. But with Trent Woodhill, one of the coaches, I’m learning different ways to hit the ball.

“In Twenty20 it’s not always about straight drives and high elbows. It’s amazing how far you can hit the ball. I’ve always been able to hit the ball far but not consistently like I have in practice over here. I’m enjoying it so much.”

With that Moeen heads off to his extra training session. Doubtless Worcestershire, two defeats from two upon their return to Division One this year, could do with his services and when it is put to him that this first-class absence means the Pakistan Test series at the end of May will likely come too soon, he replies: “It will be tough. But I know my time will come again.”

Lmao. I hope People who are giving sitara e imitiaz and citizenship to Darren Sammy when he is doing all for money, now reads this.

No cricket player would ever like to miss out on this opportunity.

Quality is unmatched, world's best players, all coming together in a single tournament.

Of course, if you're blinded by hate and do not think in terms of pure cricket, you'll still hate the tournament.

And some people argue about quality of ths league

Lmao. I hope People who are giving sitara e imitiaz and citizenship to Darren Sammy when he is doing all for money, now reads this.

But but IPL is all about money according to some PP posters.

Obviously he is saying it to please the Indians. To secure future gigs at IPL. He might or might not mean it, but he surely is saying it to be nice and get into good books.

Do you think it's fair on your part to imply that Moeen would stoop to lie for a few bucks?

isnt it obvious in case of Sammy as well? Sammy nd his antics, statements...etc are all to please pakistanis nd thereby securing psl gigs..isnt it? Psl is important to him as he is an IPL reject nd doesn’t command high demand in any of other high paying leagues...soo obviously he has to please psl/pcb/Pakistani audience but he might or might not mean it..isn’t it?

If this assumption helps you sleep better, We would have to agree with you as a good neighbour.

I said he may or may not believe in it but he is obviously trying to be nice to get into good books by using some exaggerations.

or do you actually believe he would play IPL for free?

When did i say he is lying? He might believe in quality of IPL. I just said he wants to get into good books and secure future gigs by saying good things like he can play in it for free. Do u actually believe he will play IPL for free? Its a nice thing to say but obviously an exaggeration to sound nice.

True i agree he too is saying good things to act nice to Pakistanis. However his seems to be a more genuine case because he travels to Pakistan when most foreign players dont.

Secondly, i wonder why PSL reject gayle doesnt praise IPL so much? Or does he? He should be thankful to Indian trundlers and pitches in IPL. Got badly exposed in PSL.

Yes, that's exactly what you implied that Moeen lied. Your specific phrase was 'he might or might not mean it". Saying something that one oneself does not believe is the copybook definition of lying. You also gave a motive for Moeen lie - to please the Indians and earn a few more bucks.

I don't know if Moeen who doesn't shy from displaying his belief in public would do such a thing?

On the other hand, I do like that he hasn't allowed his religious belief to stop him from playing for a team that's named after a popular whiskey brand in India.

How it seems his is genuine case when he is not the only foreigner travelled to Paskistan and Paksitan paid good money for him to travel.

PSL reject Gayle don’t have to do any drama as he got genuine respect from cricket fans in IPL unlike people who had to sweet talk gullible people to create fake love.

Which season Gayle played for PSL and how was his performance in corresponding season IPL?

Easy to say that when you’re earning 1/4 million dollars for a few weeks in the sun where you get to train with some of the best players on the planet.

If he doesn’t care about money then why did he give himself a base price of $235,000 at the auction? He could have gone in lower.

Lol what? You have tried very miserably to scientifically analyse what i said and failed at it badly. When i said he might or might not believe it, i was casting my doubts on his statement that he will play for free. Only a deluded (patriotic) person will believe it with eyes closed. I ask you, do you think he will play for free? And When i said he is trying to please Indians by saying such exaggerated things, i believe he is doing it trying to secure a gig in future IPL.

Dont care.

Maybe the other foreigners share his views too? :yk Look i did say he too is trying to please the Pakistanis. And he shares a very close relationship with Javed Afrdid and the whole Peshawar Zalmi franchise.

Genuine respect lol. Should pull out posts by Indians from last IPL when he was dropped.

Which season Gayle played for PSL and how was his performance in corresponding season IPL?
Dont know. Dont care.

The whole world admits IPL is the biggest cricket league in the world, so why so insecure? Why do some iPL fans feel the need to get validation from Pakistani fans? I mean it's flattering but why work so hard for Pakistan's approval?

Wonder why he put up a base price at all, should've went in for free. Has he been picked at all this tournament? Could be getting itchy bench warming

Dont know. Dont care.

So any foreign players who got extra money to tour Pakistan have genuine opinion about Pakistan..:)))

Chris Gayle is bonafide hero in Bangalore...during 2008/9 Ross Taylor was the biggest star in Bangalore as well.

Some sour Grapes type of comments from pak fans.

Why should not any player talk anything good about IPL. Why these guys get so worked up? Don’t understand.

Lol, do some Indians really do this?

U know that psl/pcb pay extra perks for traveling to Pakistan right?mayb other foreigners maynot need additional money nd are happy with uae paychecks..u can say he is genuine if he travels to Pakistan even if there is no additional payment...

However, it's pretty obvious that every cricketer would love to play cricket with the likes of ABD, Kohli, Starc, etc and get paid big money to do so. If I was a cricketer, I'd definitely go there for a vacation, put in a little bit of effort and earn big bucks for doing so. Same goes for the other T20 leagues but of course, the most money and star power is in the IPL.

Does this in any way show that cricketers hold the IPL in higher regard than test cricket? No. Does this help the game beyond making the cricketers richer than ever before? No. Would cricketers actually go play in the IPL for free? Lol, no.

No IPL/PSL player is going to talk crap about the respective country and will only have good things to say about the league. Have none of you been extra polite when speaking about your boss and/or company before?

Well! Mr. Moeen Ali said he would go play in IPL for free. When a renowned cricketer is saying it himself, who are you to say no? A keyboard warrior ain't you?

No, I'm just someone who understands how humans communicate. Moeen did not literally mean what he said, he was being nice.

That smell of burning though. Someone call fire brigade.

Just look at this thread, so many want Pakistani fans to admit that IPL is the best. I don't get the obsession , why the need of approval from PakistanI fans?

Because it is not the best T20 league in the world, as it doesn't have the best T20I batsman featuring in it.

Damn , whats up with Indians seeking validation for IPL from Pakistanis. Just be confident in you league man , you don't need us Pakistani's to agree with everything you say.

He is not even in playing eleven. He doesn't have variations like samit patel

He is a bad buy by RCB like Mccullum & Corey, who knows by some fluke he gets a chance and get some scores..

Another blunder by Vettori is not selecting Mitchel Mecleagan when NCN injured

That’s 10% of the T20 international matches he played.Guy have an SR of 128,that’s pretty poor for a top order batsman in T20

Accept it, brother, that he is the best T20I batsman in the world, officially :D

Hence, PSL > IPL, because of the number 1 T20I batsman playing in PSL. Even BPL is better than IPL :D

That’s a strange logic,I doubt even Pakistanis agree with this claim.

I don't think he meant the statement literally because no way would he play without pay but said that in terms of gaining experience playing in foreign conditions and rubbing shoulders with some of the top names in the sport

Samit Patel , Luke Ranchi, Bopara and Darren Sammy all played ipl for a season most were star waterboys for their respective teams most of time with a chance to play occasional game . PsL made them super stars by realising their potential ..no one can deny that fact

Still the number one T20I batsman in the world. Wins Pakistan games. Played a blinder against NZ in the recently concluded T20I series.

Ali should apply for the PSL draft. Forget IPL. I bet he’d rather play with Afridi, Amir, and Malik rather than Dinda, Binda, Pandia. Also PSL is short so no stress and he’d be guaranteed get a lot of chances

Indian and Pakistani fans are fighting a Cold War: because they don't compete directly, they are having to use the performances and statements of third party players in these Tontee-Tontee leagues to drive home their points.

If I was playing in the IPL, I had better be paid well anyway. The heat this time of the year is unbearable, there are only 2,563 games to be played in 45 days, and not a day goes by when I'm not playing, practicing or travelling.

Just googled, apparently Sammy was vice captain of one of the IPL teams in the past. It's impressive how a waterboy was made vice captain. IPL really is innovative.

Just shows how big the IPL is. Moen is enjoying his time even though he isn't a regular.

Good idea. Pick Afridi, Amir and Malik from PSL and Dinda, Pandya, Binda from IPL to compare. Why not pick Kohli, Dhoni, Rohit, ABD, Boult, Raina, Bravo, Williamson from IPL?

Because that doesn't suit his agenda

People are taking this statement too seriously. Of course he wouldn't actually play for free and he's obviously happy to be earning this money but listen to the message he's saying, that's more important!

Even though I'm a Pakistan fan I find it hilarious how many PPers are burning over this. I'm happy for Moeen Ali and the reality is whether you like it or not IPL is way ahead of all other T20 leagues simply because all the best players play in this competition (barring Pakistan).

Hope to see Pakistan players back in IPL like in 2008 because it will help them take their game forward. Standard of the domestic T20 tournaments in Pak and UAE are just a joke really.
