What's new

"I'm fitter, stronger and improving fast" : Usama Mir

He's very talented and very unlucky.

He has married a British girl it seems.. could he be in line to do an Archer and play for England?

Looked pretty impressive in PSL and always thought he would be a good tool to have in T20I setup. He needs to work on his accuracy and work on his batting.

I still believe he is the most exciting prospect in Pakistan

6 ft leg-spinning all-rounder

Has the sharpest leg-break I've seen. Hit's the ball a mile. World class fielder.
Junaids would love him.

But he's not getting a chance. Hardly any domestic games given to him.

He also was the highest wicket taker for Pakistan in the only Pakistan A series he's played. He's since never been selected 3 years later.

He has married a British girl, so will probably qualify to play for England within 3 years.
MMHS what are your thoughts on Usama. What advice would you give to him?
Junaids have you seen him?
Mamoon your thoughts please?

Haven’t seen him bowl for a long time, but I am sure he cannot be a worse bowler than Shadab.

This guy had everything. He could bowl a great legbreak, ripping googly as well as a flipper. He was also very tall and got good bounce. But has been mistreated in Pakistani domestic cricket. He is apparently now going to try his luck in England. Could be a good replacement for Adil Rashid.

Baffling non-selection of Umer Khan and Usama Mir despite getting high profile wickets in PSL. Meanwhile nobodies from ISLU like Asif Ali, Hussain Talat, Rumman Raees etc kept getting selected. And people thought Mickey had a conflict of interest lol.

Coming back to the topic, Umer Khan and Usama Mir are proper spinners and should regularly feature in domestics.

A lot of U-19 stars like Hasan Mohsin and Hassan Khan have also disappeared from the radar. Wonder what happened to them.

I was convinced Usama was going to have a great career for Pakistan and it hasn't happened. Hope he cam turn it around.

Umer Khan and Usama Mir need to be in future squads.

It’s absolutely mental to think we haven’t selected them yet...

Leg-spinners are risky proposition to be judged on the looks - I had HIGH hopes on two leggis - Shahzaib & Pyus Chawla ......

Apparently, Usama has height to extract bounce, can turn the ball sharp - should be a great prospect. However, height is not always an advantage for leggi, because it doesn't allow them to drop the ball from high trajectory (above eye line) - most of the tall leggis were unconventional - more top spinners than classical tuners - Kumble, Chandra, Tiger O'Reilley, even Afridi was like 5'11"; only Danish was probably a tall leggi with classical turners - Gupte was like 5'4", Qadir 5'5", Grimmet 5'3", Warne 5'9", AP Freeman 5'2", Mushi 5'4" ..... Probably 5'9"-10" max is the suitable height for a conventional leggi. The key to the tall leggis was their accuracy, otherwise they'll become slow medium pacer - I am not sure how accurate Usama is; without that - he won't do any jack outside T20s. His batting has potential, can't be worse fielder than most PAK fielders.

BUT, any given day, I would have invested more in Usama than Shadab - for sure.

Shadab Khan v. Usama Mir in PSL 2017

Shadab (13th overall) : 8 matches| 9 wickets | 19.11 ave | 6.61 econ | 17.3 SR

Usama Mir (5th overall) : 8 matches | 12 wickets | 19.00 ave | 8.19 econ | 13.9 SR

It's close but I honestly believe Usama Mir should have been picked instead of Shadab Khan after that PSL. Shadab has the slight edge in economy rate but Usama had the superior strike rate which is crucial in T20s when every ball counts.

Economy is far superior. In T20s I would rather have the opposition at 66-2 after 10 overs rather than 82-3. Not to mention Shadab’s batting talent, and the extra wicket he picks up every 2 games from an excellent superman runout.

Lmao judging talent from PSL performance 😂😂 this is what is wrong with Pakistan cricket these days.

Is he a gone case for certain i.e. future ENG player or is there still a shot? Doubt the wise sages of PCB will try and retain him but still.....

Shadab:

Test 6 14 3.22 36.6
ODI 43 59 5.02 29.7
FC 16 68 3.42 25.8

Usama:

FC 12 16 4.14 42.7

Here you go.

Shadab 68 wickets in 16 FC games.
Usama Mir 16 wickets in 12 FC Games.

I am only posting here because it seems some Pakistani fans are overvaluing Usama Mir as a legspinner simply because he might leave us for England. He should definitely be kept around in domestic and developed, and he can be quite potent in a few years time.

But it is simply incorrect to say he has been underutilized, wasted, or unfairly not picked. He just never made his case that strongly for the national team.

Shadab has better stats as a legspinner, is a fantastic batsman (his timing when hitting the ball this English summer has been better than both Ollie Pope and Joe Root according to CricViz — maybe doesn’t have the technique but the potential is there to be very, very handy).

And most importantly, which I rate the most, is his fitness. He energizes the team with his runouts, puts pressure on opposition by stopping easy singles, and runs brilliantly between the wickets. He performs under pressure and shows a rare ability to absorb it for his team as seen in both Test and T20 matches previously.

Maybe he’ll squander his talent and become another Malik or Hafeez. But Shadab is infinitely better than Mir on pure merit. A case might be made for Umer Khan, but he has only 8 FC games under his belt.

Yes thanks for stats, I know. I am saying it's ridiculous people rate this Mir guy or Shadab. Both are mediocre players being over hyped due to PSL. Shadab is less mediocre, but he is also a bang a stage player. Can bat somewhat and can't bowl at all.

We need to focus on genuine spinners. Invest in Zafar Gohar and Sajid Khan. Yasir is also good for a few years. I'd keep Shadab out of tests. Make Zafar the number 8, with Yasir coming in at 9 if the conditions are good.

Neither of the 3 from ISLU you stated played for Pakistan under Misbah. They all played under Mickey; and Misbah wasn't the coach of ISLU when they played for Pakistan, Dean Jones was. Also Usama Mir sat on the bench for KK the whole time Mickey was coach too. So the 'conflict of interest' you alluded to doesn't seem to exist.

The Pakistani fetish with belittling Shadab Khan is ludicrous.

His bowling record with a red ball is vastly superior to Usama Mir's, and he is closer to being a Test class batsman than Azhar Ali or Asad Shafiq will ever be again.

The whole idea is ludicrous. A 6'3 man like Usama Mir can't flight the ball and so he can never be a genuine attacking spinner.

Pakistan needs to accept that for the next decade, Shadab Khan is their leg-spinner, batting at Number 7. And if they need a more accurate spinner too they can play either Zafar Gohar or Sajid Khan at Number 8 as well.

And that's it. Yasir Shah is 34 and they can't qualify for the 2021 World Test Championship Final, so it's time to say goodbye to Yasir Shah and move on to the next generation.

Bechara was at the match today too. I told him that he's a much better bowler than Shadab and that he should have been in Pakistan set up long time ago and all he did was shrug and it was sad to see him like this.

Andy Flower on Usama Mir:

I'm really looking forward to working with Usama Mir. I know Mushtaq Ahmed, our spin bowling and assistant coach, really likes him, and so I am really looking forward to what he can do for us this season. If you have good local players, that gives you the best chance in the tournament. It is not all about the overseas players at all. It's about having good, strong, talented local player.

If he follow up his good show from the odis he will be in the mix for the world cup squad.
