What's new

Imagine a bowling attack of Wasim, Waqar, Aaqib and Zahid playing in the same match!

I don't know if these quartet played against each other, however, what an attack these 4 would be?

It would be attack bower, after attack bowler. Terrifying the oppositions batsman with their pace and skill.

From what I can remember, M Zahid did not play for Pakistan in many matches.

We once had an attack of Wasim, Waqar, Shoaib, Sami, Razzaq and Saqlain all playing together. Can't think of a better bowling attack than that. Wasim and Waqar had lost their pace but none of their skill. Shoaib and Sami were bowling at 150kph at that time. Razzaq was super delightful to watch and Saqlain was a magician. But we won absolutely zilch!!!!

No matter how good players/bowlers you have until you don't have stable leadership results wont follow.
Hence the reason why we won more in the 1980s than in 1990s.

Aqib just averaged 30+ in ODIs
He is overrated.

It's a travesty we didn't utterly dominate cricket in the 90's with the talent we had. Too much infighting, politics and definitely a little match fixing ruined the golden generation. Ultimately you could have put out any fantasy bowling attack you wanted during that time but it makes no difference if the boys constantly had their attention elsewhere.

It's always the batting that was an issue. That was the case even with Anwar, Aamir, Inzi, MoYo. Man...even then they were inconsistent. Mind boggling

We also could have had an in form Amir, Asif, Ajmal and Yasir as our current test attack quite easily.

Not always good to have so many fast bowlers. Get a bat on it and the ball will fly to the boundary. Often happened when Waqar, Shoaib and Waz bowled together in the 1999 WC.

Aqib Javed was at his peak in 1991-92, he had developed a yard of pace in his bowling but an injury for which he needed operation in 1993 slowed him down considerably and he was never that effective again.

Reminds me of the batting attack of
SRT
Sehwag
Gambhir
Kohli
Yuvraj
Raina
Dhoni

7 top class ODI batsmen. This is what we had at the 2011 world cup. Barring Kohli and SRT all were at their peaks too!

At least 3 of them were in the squad for the Carlton/United Series in Australia in 1996/97 but don't know if they played together in the same match.

Wasnt the Carlton Unites Series played in 99/2000? In any event, Pakistan did have Wasim, Waqar, Shoaib, Razaq, Mahmood, Saqlain playing together for a long time. Apart from beating India, and 99 WC, they didnt do much.

Also, I think Wasim, Waqar, Zahid and Shoaib played together in 97/98 Aussie tour to Pakistan. But they lost the series at home. Didnt do much there either!

The reason we didn't win much in the 90s wasn't due to infighting - when our players went on the field, everyone tried to perform. The fighting was always off the field. However the reason we didn't fare well in the 90s despite having an all time great XI was because we never had a captain who could bring everyone together and play as a unit. Plus all our players from number 1 to 11 had massive egos and always felt undermined by whoever was the captain at that time. In a playing XI, we had 11 players who had remained captains so there was always going to be egos trumping unity. As a nation we always have had trouble accepting leadership which aptly reflected in our cricket too.

Only two captains in the history of our game commanded genuine respect - Imran and Misbah. No wonder they have been the most successful as well.
