Imran Khan levels fresh allegations against Sharifs after 'uncovering new evidence'

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on Friday said that fresh documents that have been uncovered show that the Sharif family has 11 companies in Dubai, while also levelling more allegations against ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family.

"These new documents we have uncovered show that this family [the Sharifs] have 11 companies in Dubai and out of those, their company HDS Securities Pvt Ltd owns 52 villas in Dubai," Khan said while addressing a press conference in Islamabad.

"Imagine how many villas the other companies must own," he said, adding that another "discovery" made by his people says that the companies in Dubai have money pouring into them from Switzerland, Turkey, Oman and the United Kingdom.

"From Switzerland, there is an inflow of 60 million dirhams, and another 11 million dirhams. There's more money flowing in from other parts of the world which shows that they also have businesses in those parts of the world," Khan said while reading figures from a piece of paper.

Moving on to Ishaq Dar, he said that the former finance minister has only been sent on leave and not sacked because he is involved in laundering money along with Nawaz Sharif and his family.

"Why do you think Shahid Khaqan Abbasi gave Dar his own plane to leave the country, it was because they were all afraid he was going to end up telling the truth in court like he did before," Khan said.

"My other question is, why has Abbasi not told the country about the LNG deal he has made with Qatar. He said he will disclose the terms of the contract on the Parliament floor and then later said that the deal is confidential," Khan said, asking how a deal made with the country's money could be confidential.

"When these people say they are trying to save democracy, they mean they are trying to save their own thievery — that's what unites them," Khan remarked, adding that when people say Nawaz Sharif is the name of an ideology, they mean its an ideology based on corruption.

"I would like to ask the judiciary why it is taking pressure from this one powerful family. They should either get rid of the contempt of court law or apply it on everyone equally. This father and daughter duo say things against the Supreme Court and the judiciary and get away with it while the common man is reprimanded for even the smallest comment," Khan said.

"The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which is not even a part of the judiciary, sent out my warrants for a remark I had made, while the SC has not said anything to Nawaz for his tirade against the highest judicial office in the country," he added.

"The people are behind the SC; it should not take pressure from this family," Khan said.

LAHORE: Saudi Arabia is likely to become the hub of Pakistani politics as ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif is set to leave for the kingdom on Saturday (today) while his brother Shahbaz Sharif and Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique are already there.

Although the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is reluctant to officially state anything about the party chief’s departure, a seat has been booked in Nawaz Sharif’s name for a Jeddah-bound flight for Saturday.

A public meeting he was to address in Sargodha on Sunday (Dec 31) has been rescheduled for Jan 6 because of his unavailability.

The Punjab chief minister is already in Saudi Arabia on an “official” visit. The Saudi government had sent a special plane for his travel to the kingdom on Wednesday. He is believed to have prepared the ground for the visit of his elder brother.

Nawaz Sharif will meet the top Saudi leadership, including King Salman and Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, and “discuss with them various aspects of friendly relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia”, a family friend said, but did not elaborate further.

For lack of a clear agenda of the visit, the opposition interprets it as a step towards winning the NRO (National Reconciliation Ordinance) for the embattled Sharifs who are facing multiple cases in courts and challenges in the political field.

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah of the Pakistan Peoples Party objected to the Sharifs’ Saudi visit, saying it was tantamount to humiliating a nuclear power by inviting foreigners to interfere in its internal affairs.

“It looks like the matter is towards [seeking] forgiveness and that an NRO may be on the horizon,” he said in Lahore, adding: “If such a situation arises, I think we’ll have to shut our courts and go home.”

Mr Shah said he felt sorry to see that foreigners were being involved in local matters, adding that “if Saudi Arabia intervenes [for reconciliation between the Sharifs and the establishment] it will be shameful that Pakistan — a nuclear power — cannot make its own decisions”.

He saw a big difference between the NRO signed by the PPP with former military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf and the one the N-League was trying to strike now.

In Islamabad, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan vowed to resist the Sharifs’ move for winning another NRO.

Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif rejected the opposition’s objections, arguing that the Sharifs had spent eight long years in exile in Saudi Arabia and enjoyed good relations with the royal family for decades.

“None, including Khursheed Shah, has the right to object to the Sharifs’ visit to the kingdom,” he said in a statement.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan also rejected the opposition’s claims about the NRO and said the Sharifs were visiting the kingdom for the sake of forging unity among the ummah on certain international matters and nothing was going to be discussed about Pakistan’s internal affairs there.

He said that since the former prime minister had developed a good reputation among the ummah after he took the bold decision of conducting nuclear tests in 1998, he was in a position to play a positive role in bringing together various Muslim states on certain issues.

Brother i know your issue is not Dar's innocence or PTI's performance because Dar's son has since appeared on Shahzaib Khanzada's show and admitted everything Imran Khan said and only defence was all this money was "Halal" and have all the proofs just like Hussain Sharif had all proof so please don't hide behind establishment excuse.

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad on Tuesday accepted Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran's bail appeal in all four cases regarding an attack on Pakistan Television (PTV) headquarters in 2014.

ATC judge Shahrukh Arjumand, hearing Khan's appeal, granted him bail.

"The decision proves that I am sadiq (truthful) and ameen (righteous), not a terrorist," Imran Khan told the media outside the court after the ruling.

"I am the ladla [darling] of judiciary because I abide by the law," said the PTI chief, taking another opportunity to aim at Nawaz Sharif and his "lack of transparency". "Nawaz Sharif could not have withstood half of the scrutiny that I went through," Khan added, referring to the trial against him in the Supreme Court in which he was acquitted last year.

The PTI leader is one of the accused in the four cases related to the 2014 attack that took place during the party's dharna in the capital. Khan, in December 2017, had moved the court for the case to be transferred to a civil court, but his request had been turned down.

During Tuesday's hearing, Khan's lawyer Babar Awan had tried to convince the court that PTI chief should not be named in the case, arguing that he was not named in the statements by the police officials that were attacked by the protesters back in 2014.

Awan told the court that 11 witnesses had recorded their statements regarding the attack on Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Asmatullah Junejo and Constable Sajjad Ahmed, arguing that the officials had not specifically named Imran Khan. He also read out the first information report and the statements of the SSP and constable in court.

The state prosecutor rejected Awan's arguments, saying that Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Tahirul Qadri had incited violence during the protests, that ultimately led to the attack on PTV, SSP Junejo and Constable Ahmed. He was rebuked by Khan, who spoke up during the prosecutor's arguments, saying that the claim was a lie.

The prosecutor, however, said that he had recordings of the speeches given by Khan during the protests as well as pictures of the PTV attack. He then showed the pictures to the courtroom.

Awan responded that Khan's protest was not to spread violence but to provide awareness to the public.

When the judge asked whether any of the PTV attackers, who had been identified from CCTV footage obtained from the state television headquarters, were arrested, police officials responded in the negative.

The state lawyer added that Imran Khan only surrendered and appeared in court after the ATC ordered authorities to seize his assets and issued arrest warrants against him.

In 2014, Khan and PAT Chairman Tahirul Qadri staged a major rally in Islamabad against alleged rigging in the 2013 election and the Model Town tragedy, which had seen as many as 14 people killed and 100 others injured when police attacked Qadri's residence during an 'anti-encroachment' operation.

Khan had threatened to shut down the entire country in what was perceived as a bid to topple the government. The protest had continued for a record 104 days.

On Sept 1, 2014, while the sit-in was still ongoing, SSP Junejo and five other police officers had been beaten up by protesters on Constitution Avenue as they stormed the PTV headquarters and the precincts of the Parliament.

Hundreds of PTI and PAT supporters led by their leaders had briefly seized the state broadcaster on Sept 1, 2014, at a time when the country was under intense political crisis.

The protesters had disrupted transmission of PTV news channel and PTV World for a short period of time. The buildings were later cleared by personnel of the Pakistan Army.

A case had been registered against Khan, Qadri, and others for torturing SSP Junejo and the other police officers. Both leaders had been declared proclaimed offenders and arrest warrants were issued against them.

The ATC had declared Khan a proclaimed offender and issued non-bailable warrants for his arrest in November 2015.

In November 2017, the PTI chief had finally surrendered before the ATC in four cases regarding the 2014 sit-ins after the court ordered confiscation of his movable and immovable assets.

After the surrender, the court had withdrawn his arrest warrants and granted pre-arrest interim bail to the PTI chief.
