Imran to contest from five seats: PTI

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced on Sunday the party chairman Imran Khan will contest the general elections from five constituencies, three from Punjab and two from Khyber-Pakhtukhwa (K-P) and added that it had finalised its homework for the upcoming general elections.

The announcement was made by PTI Central Punjab President Abdul Aleem Khan, while speaking to reporters in Lahore.

Aleem said, “Names of many candidates have already been shortlisted and soon they [PTI] will be given a green signal to launch their election campaign.”

The PTI leader added that the party is also working on its membership campaign and in the coming 90 days every constituency would complete its work of registering new party members. He said during the last five years, his party has acted as the real opposition and political struggle of Imran Khan has become fruitful.

Commenting on the current political scenario, he said after deposed premier Nawaz Sharif, now Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also in hot waters. He claimed, “Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would also dismantle with the passage of time.”

Replying to a question, Aleem said that in the K-P uniform policy has been adopted to bring reforms in the religious educational institutions. He explained that this was done so that youngsters could also be brought into the mainstream and given modern education.

Aleem asserted that this time the PTI would bring an upset all over Punjab and especially in central Punjab and would deliver a decisive victory there. He was of the view that other leaders joining PTI has made the party stronger and now it is in better position to contest the election in various areas.

Unfortunately, he said, ground realities are quite different and there are certain political parameters which play important role in final victory.

“The PTI would also take its share in the Senate elections and we are in contact with other political parties which would bring good news,” claimed Aleem.

The PTI leader also assured the media that his party would maintain a close liaison in future and keep them informed about political developments on a daily basis.

MPA and Central Vice President PTI Mohammad Shoaib Siddique, Secretary Political Training Wing Jamshaid Butt also accompanied Aleem Khan in the media briefing.

There should be a ban on competing in more than two seats

Last elections, I stupidly ended up voting for him but his decision to run from multiple seats allowed me the opportunity to correct my mistake and vote for someone else in the by-election when he gave up that seat for another one he'd won from.

What changed after you had voted for him?

I was strongly opposed to him since long before the elections due to his taliban-esque tendencies but decided at the spur of the moment to go with him because it was either him or ANP in my constituency, hoping against hope that he'd prove me wrong and the cozying up to the extremist parties like JI was a populist move to tilt the right wing vote in his favor. Realized soon afterwards that it was a mistake and the right wing alliances weren't just for political expediency so the by-elections were a godsend. The guilt of voting for T.Khan would have been too much otherwise.

Better late than never I guess.

From political point of view, it is usually done to mobilize voters in different cities and also backup in case of loss on one seat. In Karachi for example, there is fair bit of excitement due to Imran Khan contesting which was the intention and it gives the impression that you re owning the city.

I don't agree with it though, especially when you have to leave the seat if you win multiple seats and then time and resources are wasted on re-elections.

I know many politicians contest from two places for various reasons like to generate excitement in a new areas where they are trying to break into, to ensure winning from at least one constituency when the going is really tough, or when the party can't find high profile candidates for high profile constituencies, etc. But contesting in five freaking constituency? So now Govt will have to pay for this? i don't think anyone will or should support this kind of behavior. More ever in India, candidates have to prove their residency in all the constituencies that the candidates are contesting. i can understand two locations as many politicians have both their hometown and the location they work out of which makes it a reasonable argument that they can contest in those two constituencies. now is Imran has residency in five different locations? unbelievable.. For an outside he looks very desperate. Not sure how the Pakistan public will perceive this move..

If he wins all 5 seats, how will that work in the end? Will there be re-election in 4 of them?
I normally see PM candidates of India competing from 2 seats which I think is cowardice.
