What's new

Imran Tahir, what could have been...

What a treat to watch too, apart from being very good he has the jasba janoon associated with Pakistan of old. Totally missing in the present generation team.

If he had stayed in Pakistan he would have been lost in the Wild West which is Pakistan's domestic cricket circuit.

He would have been wasted in domestic cricket due to a lack of influential supporters and therefore no chance of playing for Pakistan.

Ajmal had no influential supporters. In the end, exceptional talent rises to the surface, albeit a little later than it should have.

Tahir and Asif are Pakistan's two biggest missed opportunities ever.

The Tahir we see today is the product of the Saffer domestic structure. He never would have developed into such a fine bowler had he continued playing in our first class.

The performance in question was in Tests.

Tahir is lauded for his superlative consistency in regularly taking several wickets per match at an economical rate in LOIs.

it doesn't matter with Pk fans if performance is in Tests or ODIs.
With that kind of performance, he would have been given bad treatment till today

Ajmal was recommended by Malik and Misbah for numerous years before given a chance.

Remarkable how many times he's broken the backbone of a team just when they look to be cruising as soon as he comes on.

Are there any discarded leggies in Pakistan? I'll gladly accept a 2nd rate spinner from that country, he'll be a superstar here

Why was Kaneria ahead of Ajmal? If i'm not mistaken it was his ban that paved way for Ajmal.
Was Kaneria performing better domestically? Or were the selectors always aware of Ajmal's bowling action could potentially get him into trouble?

Tahir won't have have played more than hand ful matches for PAK - may be few Tests & might not play even 10 LO for them.

Oblate PAK's spin strategy had been darting - Tahir with his classical leg spin approach, won't have survived more than 2/3 ODI under Misbah & later Azhar. Their biggest fear is being hit for a boundary, hence they are happy to concede 125 singles between 11-40 overs - no leggi, not even Warne can be successful under a defensive & timid Captain.

Besides, PAK won't haver played 2 leggi even in a Test let alone LO (though today India played 2 classical leggi in a T20 - a testament of the quality of spin play in "modern" era - but for that you need Captain with melon size heart ... not pea size), therefore Tahir would have required to wait for Afridi to get injured, if ever he had to play a LO.

Which would have never happened - PAK players are extremely fit, I have hardly seen anyone missing selection on fitness ground. Unfit teams like AUS, SAF, NZ often had 4/5 players on fitness list (NZ is playing against Aussies with 6 players missing from squad on fitness including Guptil - such measurable status of their fitness) but we don't expect that from PAK players & Afridi is even better - he was so fit that he even didn't require testing.

Ajmal wasn't that good in his 20s.

Not Malik. You're confusing Misbah and Ajmal here. Misbah did recommend Ajmal but his recommendation was based on Ajmal bamboozling him at the domestic scene. Tahir would have gotten similar admirers had he stayed.

Ajmal has given Malik credit personally.

At what age did Tahir throw in the towel and move to Africa?

Ajmal had Misbah........who was a huge help to him.

There were question marks in domestic cricket about Ajmal's action and that's why PCB was reluctant to play him in international cricket.

I'm sure Tahir was only half the bowler he is now when he was in Pakistan. South Africa made him something Pakistan wouldn't be able to do 99 times out of 100.

But how considering SA can't even produce a half decent spinner?
I think Tahir took a detour to the UK before he came to SA's domestic circuit. Possibly that's where he learned/improved his craft.
SA's domestic set up is professional with good conditions and infrastructure. The weather is also generally very good, but that's about it. I don't see how our coaches could have thought Tahir something he already didn't know.

Ajmal has given Malik credit personally.

He solely credits Misbah for his initial selection and no one else. This is from an interview in 2012-2013 after the series against England when Malik was not the captain and Ajmal did not have to give him more respect than warranted.

Also, highly unlikely that Malik would do something like this.

IMRAN TAHIR - a very very special talent.

well thats for sure and widout any doubt that there is no better LOI bowler than tahir. Tahir is a very special talent he is 39 but as energetic as 19 year guy..... those sprints..... celebrations..... ever active in the field. He was such a pathetic fielder he started his career but now he has improved very very much at that too at a age where other people call it off..... His googly... oh my god they spun more than ashwin's and jadeja's stock deliveries on spinning heavens.....
Sometimes I wonder pak(not tahir) has been unfortunate for not having him despite tahir playing more than a decade of domestic cricket in pak..... well there might be some guys who will counter me by talking about USAMA & SHADAB (surely they are very talented) but pak cricket is reaaaaaaaalllllyyyy unfortunate that the never gave tahir a chance forget abt having him permanently in the team...... plus I think he would never hav improved in his fielding had he been in pakistan.......
TAHIR is a gem as I said a very very special talent........... KUDOS

Imran Tahir - 38 years

If Imran Tahir played for Pakistan would Pakistani fans want him to resign because of his age

your math must be weak. There is a huge difference between 43 and 38. Also one is performing other has his favorite punching bag.

Comparing apples with oranges.

Unlike Misbah, Tahir is still a top ranked ODI bowler.

In case of Younis, he his losing his impact with the bat in every successive series.

Yet he was just the top ranked Test batsmen recently despite huge competition?

its rankings. doesn't tell the whole story also the point system makes players in top position even if they haven't done anything for a while. once you get in top ten then you can stay for a while with mediocre performances as well. Saeed Ajmal was ranked no.1 bowler for a year if I'm not wrong despite being banned from bowling.

Misbah's highest ranking has been #6 (in 2013).

At present, he is not even among top 3 Pakistani batsman.

Tahir, just like Sangakkara is getting better with age. He still has enough to offer to his team. We can talk about his retirement once his form will be in terminal decline.

What a great limited overs bowler Tahir is - had things turned out differently he could have played 100s of LOIs in his career.

Imran Tahir took a fifer today in BPL with a bowling figure of 5/26 while playing for Rangpur Riders against the Khulna Tigers

At 45, Imran Tahir the oldest player in the CPL became the first overseas bowler to claim 100 wickets in the league.
