Bollywood movies have gone downhill now adays. Ever since Animal came out and South indians became a hit, every other movie is about this hairy masculine man, dominating everyone else. Or its one man fighting the system, or an Indian spy winning the battle for his country.
But, bollywood was never like that, infact my all time favorite movie is actually a bollywood movie and not a hollywood one.
Rang De Basanti is an all time classic Indian film. Probably the best Indian film that was ever made. The story telling, the casting of Amir, Sharman Joshi and the RSS guy, the photography, and how the stories transferred from current time line to the last past and lastly the dialogues, made it a great film. On top of all that, the main role of bhagat singh wasnt even given to Amir, but to someone who was unknown called Siddhart.
A movie on Bhagat Singh was always going to be a boring snorefest, but they had to make this movie by taking contemporary Indian students, who believed all this freedom fighting is BS, until one of their own friend gets killed only due to govt corruption, and the blame of his death is placed on him and not on the politician who signs the deal.
What was really impressive was, how Amir Khan's present character in the Movie, DJ kills the Defense Minister. This would had never been allowed to be screen in todays India.
But the movie also points out at many things, that should Bhagat Singh had been made a hero? Because his group did kill innocent Indians, the wrong British guy and threw grenades in the national assembly.
