In a first, liquor company from China to establish manufacturing plant in Pakistan

Pakistan needs to legalise alcohol for the same reason the West has slowly started to legalise recreational marijuana – there is no point in brushing the matter under the carpet.

Anyone who lives in Pakistan (and don't live under a rock) would know that alcohol has become increasingly become prevalent in Pakistan. Contrary to what some would like to believe, this practice is not limited to the elite or the upper middle-class. In fact, even people from the middle class and lower-working class have started to drink routinely.

I'm not going to comment on whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. However, we need to accept that it is a 'thing' because only then can we make laws around it to ensure that people indulge in the use of alcohol in a more safe manner. At the moment, we have no legislation that regulates the production of alcohol - this only leads to people producing and drinking dangerous moonshine. I don't know if these stories make the news but I have personally heard of scores of people dying in weddings because they had a dangerous composition of alcohol.

why should it be banned in Pakistan? Again, why overseas Pakistanis should be dictating how the country of their forefathers should operate?

Why should peoples dirnking habits and clothing habits be regulated? Leave the awaam alone let them decide. Moral policing is in the blood of every Pakistani it seems

Why do we get so upset if some advises us?

Please less of this and more of a proper discussion

You mentioned the factory will be at risk......that isn;t from overseas Pakistanis.

We overseas Pakistanis are merely posting on forums, it's Pakistanis that have enforced a ban and will be so angry at the brewery that they will be willing to attack it.

I am giving my opinion based on what we do here in England, it is an opinion not a fatwa. You are asking why it should be banned but I told you in the post you quoted. In the UK sale of alcohol is strictly regulated. You yourself are one of the biggest critics of Pakistan's corruption and lack of law enforcement, so following that logic, unless you can regulate potentially harmful substances properly, then it is better not to allow them for sale at all.

In the UK shopkeepers are often caught selling alcohol to minors, do you imagine that greedy Pakistanis would turn down the chance of a profit? Who would enforce restrictions? The same police you usually complain turn a blind eye?

No my friend, no alcohol for you until you can convince me you Pakistanis are ready to be responsible.

Folks who are bringing Islam in everything, are you really that religious and follows Islam's teaching in every step of the daily life or its just your habit to drag the religion every time we talk.

What I find interesting in that article is that everyone buying alcohol acts in such an orderly manner which is probably not true in other retail environments. One of the possible reasons for that is that because it is considered comparatively taboo in Pakistan, no one wants to draw attention to themselves.

If that was England or Scotland you would have people hanging around drink establishments drinking openly and getting into fist fights as they got more and more drunk. This shows that it's a good thing not to romanticise alcohol consumption, something we in the UK are coming to terms with, and that is why you see much stricter licensing laws in recent times as compared to 20 years ago.

Well same thing happens in wine shops in India as well. The sharabis line up in a proper queue, to buy the bottles, and they carry it with them taking care of it all the way, like it is their baby. Reminds me of a scene of a bollywood movie of Amitabh, where some guy, i think Keshto falls down with a bottle in his pocked and blood coming out. First thing he checks is if the bottle is fine..

The best scenes I have seen in my life were in Bangalore, where 85 year old Grandmas in their Saris are taking wine shots in the road side Wine shops, and abusing the Auto Wallahs..

I am not sure about legalisation and all in Pakistan, up to local people what they want.
But if people are drinking it and it is a well known secret, then regulate it. No need to bury head in sands in that case.

Folks bringing Gujarat here, well you can still buy and drink inside a hotel there. It is not sold in shops.
But, this side of Punjab there is a big drinking culture.
The motto is :

Chicken tey meat, sare babay dancing on the angrezi beat...
