RANCHI: As a group of ministers examines ways of preventing mob killings that have caused nationwide anger and concern, RSS leader Indresh Kumar has offered his own antidote. "If the sin of cow-killing ends, then this problem will be solved," he suggested on Monday.

In the latest incident on Friday, a man attacked by a mob on suspicion of cow smuggling in Rajasthan's Alwar bled out as policemen took him to hospital three hours after they found him. The policemen first made arrangements for Rakbar Khan's cows before taking him to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Indresh Kumar, a senior leader of the RSS or Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh - the ideological mentor of the ruling BJP - said: "Jesus was born in a cowshed and that is why in Christianity they talk of mother cow. In Mecca and Medina killing cows is a crime. Can't we vow not to kill cows, to free humanity of this sin? If this happens then our problem of mob lynching will be solved."

Confronting outrage over the conduct of the policemen in Rajasthan, a state which is ruled by the BJP, the central government yesterday set up a group of ministers led by Home Minister Rajnath Singh to examine ways to stop such mob attacks and report to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Indresh Kumar also commented on the mob attack on social activist Swami Agnivesh in Jharkhand's Pakur last week, allegedly by activists of BJP-affiliated youth groups who accused him of speaking against Hindus.

"It is wrong and condemnable. But nobody has the right to hurt others' sentiments in the name of freedom of expression," said Mr Kumar, an executive committee member of the RSS.

He said a "strong law" was needed against those who hurt religious faith.

Asked about mob attacks in various parts of the country, Mr Kumar said, "Any mob lynching incident is condemnable."

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Indresh Kumar on Monday, 23 July, courted controversy when he claimed that lynchings across India would cease if people just stopped eating beef.

According to ANI, Kumar said cow slaughter was banned across religions like Islam and Christianity.

"Jesus was born in a cowshed. That is why they call it the ‘holy cow’. Cow slaughter is banned in Mecca and Medina. We should make it a resolution to rid humanity of this sin. If humanity gets rid of this sin, the society will get rid of this problem (lynching)."

“Mob lynchings are condemnable, but cow slaughter is a sin across religions,” he added.


Stop Cow Smuggling: Rajasthan Minister 'Appeals' to Muslims

Rajasthan minister Jaswant Yadav “appealed” to Muslims to “stop their business of smuggling cows.”

"Appeal Muslims to understand the sentiments of Hindus and stop smuggling cows. They must stop this business. As far as his death is concerned, I express condolence and I stand against those who take law in their hands."

The state’s Home Minister GC Kataria, however, said that Yadav should explain his statement. Speaking to ANI, Kataria said:

"Jaswant Yadav should answer for himself. The law does not give anyone the right to kill. Whosoever is responsible will be punished."

BJP MLA from Telengana, T Raja Singh Lodh on Sunday, 22 July, posted a video on Facebook stating that the “war for gau raksha” (cow protection) and incident of lynchings will not stop till the time cow receives the status of “Rashtra Mata” (Mother of the Nation). Singh further added, “This war of protecting cows will not stop even if the gau rakshaks are put in jails or are fired at.”

Kumar and Yadav’s statement comes days after a 32-year-old man, Akbar Khan, was lynched in Rajasthan’s Alwar. The lynchings have continued in India even as the issue is being widely debated in courts and in the ongoing monsoon session of the Parliament.

According to The Indian Express, Kumar was speaking at a press meet in a hotel in Ranchi, where he inaugurated the Jharkhand unit of Hindu Jagran Manch.

Congress leader H Dalwai said that Kumar should be arrested for his statement.

“Indresh was named in a bomb blast case. Why does the government allow him to speak like that? Why isn't he jailed? Unka lynching hoga to samjhega kya? Don't want this for anyone. They want to make India Pak or Afghanistan,” said Dalwai.


Muslims Should Stop Eating Beef: Shia Waqf Board

Supporting Indresh Kumar’s statements, Shia Waqf Board Chief Waseem Rizvi said that security can’t be deployed everywhere and a law should be made to punish the ones indulging in cow slaughter.

“Muslims should stop eating beef. Killing of cows should stop. Meat of cows is 'haram' in Islam as well. You can't stop mob lynching, security can't be deployed everywhere. So a law should be made awarding strict punishment to those killing cows,” he said.

“I think Indresh Ji's statement has a point. Religious sentiments should not be hurt. If law is made to stop killing of cows, lynching will stop. You can't kill someone who is given the status of mother by a community,” he added.

The RSS / BJP are happy to use this cow thing as a tool to subjugate Muslims. They won't do squat against Hindus eating beef in Telangana or elsewhere.

A certain chunk of Muslims should buy into it and vote for them in one election or the other, then try to change this enmity from the inside. Being a votebank means the BJP will have to pander to them in some way, shape or form.

No! "Qurbani" is not leaving behind bad habits!! The song simply means that Allah loves a sacrifice. Fighting bad habits like giving up smoking would be doing "jihad". People however do generally use the word "Qurbani" inaccurately, to some it does have a broader meaning. Traditionally "Qurbani" has always meant sacrificing an animal according to Islamic belief.

I have to say although most Hindu's I know eat some form of meat the quantity is far less then Muslim's. Even as a Muslim I am not hooked on meat at all. Sikh's mostly eat meat as well but of a different kind.

This defense is quite ridiculous. You're telling me that there are so many buffaloes slaughtered in India that it is enough to account for 20% of global beef export? I think it's only in 2017 that the government discussed a national ban on cattle being sold for slaughter. So what was happening pre-2017 when India was consistently one of the top 3 or so beef exporters? There was no national law banning the sale of cattle for slaughter.
