With no yasir shah or zafar gohar or any other spinner, we will be heavily be relying on babar. Till now all the talk has been about yasir shah and no one is talking about babar.

Back in 2012 it was the same case, but it was the efforts of abdur rehman that we won last time.

He has taken about 40 wickets in short number of test, hoping to see him rise here

Yasir is not out yet, he will most likely play, considering they don't have Zafar as an option anymore.

Don't forget me!! I am a Torontonian. I got a group presentation tomorrow but I am gonna probably watch half a session to a session depending how things pan out.

It's quite funny really. A certain # of posters here were calling for Babar's head saying he was/is too old and and a liability to the team. Well, we now find ourselves relying on him.

Ayeee! I'll remember from now on :narine Seems we got quite a community of Canadians on here :hafeez2

I'm one of those people; but guess we don't have a better choice, do we? :))

But honestly, I have a gut feeling that Yasir might play. We'll see anyway in a short while.

From Cricinfo:

Meanwhile, this from Samiullah: "Looks like Yasir's out - getting some consolatory pats from team-mates"

Yasir is ruled out due to injury, Imran Khan is set to play in his stead.

InshAllah, Zulfiqar Babar will perform superbly as the lone spinner.

Yeah it sucks.Odi's are at a brilliant time because I can sneakly watch in school:P. Don't worry we'll laugh at all the Pakistanis when we tour the Windies:yk

I don't really trust him but let's hope for best

England have to be really awful against spinnersand have some mental block (not spin because he bowls straight ones a lot) to be rolled over by him and Malik

Rubbish bowler. But even a rubbish bowler may be enough for England.

Very very short term option.

I find it interesting that people are normally quick to quote stats at the speed of light, but have nothing to say about that fact Babar averages almost 40 in Test cricket; that is part-timer stuff.

You don't have to look at stats to see that he is a spent force - there is no bite in his bowling; too slow through the air, and doesn't get the ball to turn and grip much. Simply goes through the motions and gently loops the ball. Zero intensity in his bowling. So uninspiring and dull to watch.

He was quality in his prime, but got selected too late. He was impressive in 2013 but since then, he has been on a downward spiral.

He took wickets against Australia, but they were extremely poor against spin especially Haddin. His bowling wasn't earth-shattering.

He can still take a 5-fer or a 6-fer but not the impact ones. Instead, those typically useless spinners' 5 wicket hauls in subcontinent/UAE which they accomplish by virtue of bowling nearly 50 overs, and conceded 150+ runs while the batting team piles up a massive total, giving him cheap wickets in the end.

At the moment, he is a poor quality support spinner, and we would be better off investing in Zafar in his stead.

Been really disappointing

He looked well past it in Sri Lanka too. And tbh I was sure his time was up and was hoping that we will not play but even then I did not think he would be this ineffective.

Really poor.

I was particularly surprised by Bell's control over him considering Bell is a dud against most kinds of spin at the best of times.

He has Bowled well in this game. WIth an economy rate of 1.75 and no spinner to support him or put pressure from the other end, this has been a good effort by him

WHat have Rashid and Moeen done? Instead get beaten for 4+ per over..

The guy doesnt have any support from other end, and as for Zafar, hes just a kid, no experience at his hand at all. A Spinners success comes from experience............

You have a habit of trusting mediocre players.

I will always trust an experience person, over some kids who have barely played any first class games.

Guys like Yasir Shah or Ajmal were successful in world cricket because of Experience, after spending 10 years in domestic they tasted success in International cricket.

Zafar Gohar reminds me of the Raza Hasan hype back in 2010, even back then Afridi din't play him because he knew the bowler was just a kid and din't have that much experience.

This is my assessment too. Yasir would love to have been bowling from the other end.

Moeen is deeply mediocre and Rashid is rubbish. Outperforming them is not a big deal.

Yes experience is important but there is not point in persisting with over the hill players. Why not bring the chucker back so that we can utilize his experience in darting?

Babar, Ajmal and Rehman all three are finished articles and we have to move on from them. Find a capable partner for Yasir and Zafar isn't the next Ashwin but he seems like a good prospect nonetheless.

Sometimes you have to blood in a young spinner when you don't have options. India put their faith in a 23 year old Ashwin rather than persisting with Dartbhajan, and he's now best in the world across all three formats. Again, not saying that Zafar will be as good as Ashwin, but experience means little when you are not good enough.

This is my assessment too. Yasir would love to have been bowling from the other end.

Even if Zafar Gohar was playing, still some pressure would had been generated, poor guy just doesnt have anyone to help him from the other end

Zulfiqar bowled well, he was unlucky though. He troubled Bell, who dead-batted everything to him (5 runs in 51 balls against him initially) and few LBWs went against him and Shan Masood missed a chance.

Cook is one of the better players of spin from both teams, and him being a left-hander also helped. Still Babar got a very close review against Cook not going in his favour, and a drop by Fawad.

The only bowler who was bowling good lines and lengths consistently, but Misbah kept replacing him with lifeless Rahat/Asad Shafiq for strange reasons.

Shan Masood and fawad dropped catches off his bowling. With no other spinner and Malik bowling rubbish, I think he did a fantastic job.

Could've taken two+ wickets.

Mamoon, don't hate on Zulfiqar because of some of his poor past performances. He was very good today, read above post.

Yeah, hardly his fault. An ideal bowling partnership is developed when one bowler stops the flow of runs and another one attacks. Abdur and Ajmal did this phenomenally against England in 2012, Shah and Babar have replicated it over the last year or so.

In this match, apart from Riaz to an extent, the other bowlers were not able to take advantage of Babar's miserly economy rate.

Puzzling how no mention has been made of Shoaib "good enough to be the second spinner" Malik in all of this.

Regarding the Raza example - he was quality in 2012, but a serious spinal injury and drugs got the better of him, so it isn't really a relevant example.

Looks like people are satisfied with this useless baba. Good good, you deserve it.

Good evening. :zulfiqarb

I watched the day's play - he was impotent.

People are not considering the fact that Bell played him very poorly. Zulfi was serving up a pie followed by a dart. England actually missed a trick by not taking him on and let him bowl at them.

Tell me one poster who said Malik was good enough to be second spinner ?
Anyway; Babar is done. A good bowler in his prime but he is finished now.

That is all Baba does these days. Bell was crapping his pants earlier on and his confidence was shattered due to the dropped catches, yet he failed to dismiss him. That summed up his performance today.
