After Tuesday's third and final ODI, several members of the India squad will pack their bags and head to six different Indian venues to play in the domestic T20 tournament. For South Africa's full-strength squad, the journey is set to be much longer and the upcoming stakes, a lot higher. In less than a week's time, Temba Bavuma's side will face New Zealand in a T20 World Cup warm-up fixture in Brisbane.

While India could send their T20I regulars for the World Cup even before the ODI series against South Africa began, the visitors haven't been able to afford such luxuries. The aim for South Africa would've been to pick a 3-0 win over an India team sans their marquee stars in a bid to move up on the World Cup Super League (WCSL) table. Languishing at 11th, every win mattered and the points dropped in Ranchi is all but likely to send them to Zimbabwe for the 2023 ODI world cup qualifiers. Yet, the aim for now will be to cap off the series with a win in the national capital and shift focus to the shorter format with a victory behind them.

For India, this series is another reminder of the depth in quality that the home side possesses in white-ball cricket. For the players, a win on Tuesday could serve as a starting point to make their case for next year's 50-overs World Cup at home.

When: India vs South Africa, 3rd ODI, October 11, 1.30pm Local Time

Where: Arun Jaitley stadium, New Delhi

What to expect: A warm, humid day with afternoon shower spells. The venue has an average first-innings score of 230, with the 300-mark breached just twice in 26 ODIs.

Team news:

India

The hosts are likely to retain their winning combination from two days ago.

Probable XI: Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Avesh Khan, Mohammed Siraj

South Africa:

Temba Bavuma missed the second ODI with a 'mild infection'. If he is fit for the last game, he should walk back in, in place of Reeza Hendricks. Same goes for Tabraiz Shamsi, who, if fit, should replace Bjorn Fortuin.

Probable XI: Janneman Malan, Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma/Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Keshav Maharaj, Bjorn Fortuin/Tabraiz Shamsi, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje

What they said:

"Obviously, you feel bad when you're not part of the team for a big tournament where you could get good exposure. If you win a World Cup for your country, it's an entirely different, proud feeling. But I feel the selectors and coaches must have seen some shortcomings [in my game], and even I feel there's a need for improvement. I know I haven't given my best performance yet." - Ishan Kishan on missing out on a T20 World Cup spot.

Squads:

India Squad: Shikhar Dhawan(c), Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson(w), Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Avesh Khan, Rahul Tripathi, Rajat Patidar, Mukesh Kumar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravi Bishnoi

South Africa Squad: Quinton de Kock(w), Janneman Malan, Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Keshav Maharaj(c), Bjorn Fortuin, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Temba Bavuma, Andile Phehlukwayo, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Marco Jansen

India have won the toss and have opted to field

South Africa (Playing XI): Quinton de Kock(w), Janneman Malan, Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller(c), Marco Jansen, Andile Phehlukwayo, Bjorn Fortuin, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje

India (Playing XI): Shikhar Dhawan(c), Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson(w), Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Avesh Khan

David Miller: It is always a privilege to be the skipper. We would have bowled first. We have three changes. Few guys have fallen sick. Maharaj fell sick. Shamsi and Bavuma are down as well.

Shikhar Dhawan: We will bowl first. I feel there is some moisture on the wicket and we would want to explore that. The boys played well under pressure. We are going with the same team.

Very very excited to see the most exciting young bastman in the world who has been pulverizing the bowling attacks all over the world. He will be the MOS in 2023 WC. Should have been in the T20 WC squad. Big fan of Shikhar "Gabbar" Dhawan 😎

:91: Youngster beauty and Gabru Jawaan Shikhar Dhawan. :inti

Don't want to jinx it but we are just too good an ODI team and perhaps our best format. No one is beating us in this format, especially at home irrespective of the side we put in. Considering 2023 World cup is in India, it will be considered a massive upset if we don't win.

Our weakness is T20 cricket as it is a hit & giggle format.

SA blanked us 3-0 this year

Mohammad Siraj 2 wickets, Avesh Khan 2 catches, Ma sha Allah.

In SA. We also blanked Eng in Eng few months ago

I am talking about ODIs in home. This is India's D team, and most players won't play in WC 2023. But we are still doing well against full strength SA side.

Is this pitch a minefield or SA simply incompetent or our bowlers being actually good?

Is this pitch a minefield or SA simply incompetent or our bowlers being actually good?

Pretty tough pitch by our recent standards I guess. But ots a bit of everything . Ideal bowling attack for this surface + poor batting + pitch etc.

Our 'second ring' spinners are so much better.

Don't know what that loser Chahal is doing in Australia!

So if SA lose this series, how are they placed for World Cup qualification?

This is what T20s and leagues do. Lots of players will have difficulty to sustain 50 overs.

Please scrap this T20 format.

Life was good when the formats were only tests and ODIs, and apple and blackberry were just fruits.

T20 makes mediocre players look good as they just have to be good for 3 or 4 overs.

pathetic pitch. Stadium is a concrete monstority. the politics of the DDCA has to be the absolute pits in our cricketing circles.
when you throw in the air pollution, no body wants to be here

Gill is probably the greatest pull-shot player among young batsmen. Absolute command over that shot. Rohit, KL Rahul, and Kohli in that line Gill is a very good addition.

Ishan Kishan, Iyer, Kuldeep, Siraj and Samson are the positives from this series especially Kishan and Samaon. :ab :inti

Looks like India took the wrong set of bowlers to the world cup. Siraj should be in that WC team

There was a good post about his weight transfer issues. He can play all the shots but needs to resolve that.

What kind of score is this?

Kuldeep being the positive is the negative for me. He still depends on batsman not reading him and even Jansen was reading him easily . Nothing to offer beyond that.

That's the miracle of India that can produce two world class teams at any point. However, none of those teams will win a world championship.

yes.
B team or not, we are always beast in bilaterals.
but bow out in ICC tourneys with too much regularity

i feel he does not have a decent forward defensive. But then many gr8's also did not , for eg mohd azhar, zaheer abbas, Greg chappell , damien martyn.
Dont think he is that flash when it is swinging, eg in eng or nz swing and seam conditions. am yet to see him tested against quality spin.
Where he is good is on bouncy wickets where it comes on. Which is why i dont know why he was nt selected against Saf in the tests there.
but time is onhis side.
has a quick eye hand co-ord.

Although this series was conducted in the interest of SA, India has some takeaways. Dhawan is done. Biggest takeaway. india has far too many youngsters coming through. So Dhawan can easily be dispensed with.

Samson also a good pull player.. he easily hit six with his pull-shot :kohli..

Gill is a level above even Kohli. He can even pull just short of a length not just proper short ball. He keeps it on the ground with absolute control. It is one of the most natural shot for him.

SA are a scary side - for their own supporters!

Shreyas Iyer, player of series!

Iyer and Pant are must for ODI World Cup next year for me. Pant being a great puller of short ball and spin basher will compliment Iyer well.

Rest of the youngsters still have some way to go. :inti

What is with this "even Kohli"? Considering all the best players across all generations, he is an average player of short ball. Started out as mediocre, then got a lot better.

Kohli was a great pull shot player always. He and Rahane put on an exhibition in Australia right after the "Johnson" series against England. First Kohli got hit by Mitch. Then he absolutely dominated the series against short ball with 4 centuries made close to 700 series. Channel 9 commies said this is one of the greatest batting against short ball down under in a long time.

India's 2023 ODI World Cup squad :-

Rohit
Gill
Kohli
Pant(wkt)
KL Rahul(wkt)
Shreyas Iyer

Pandya
Jadeja
Axar

D Chahar/Shardul

Bumrah
Shami
Siraj

Yuzi
Kuldeep

15 man sorted. :inti

Siraj should be on the plane for world T20 not Shami who hasn't had a game in a while. Besides he is a predictable hittable T20 bowler.

You're wrong about Delhi's pollution especially these days.

Air quality is actually good, very good in fact due to persistent rain.

As for stadium, don't get me started. sanghis thought renaming the stadium will change the character of the stadium too.

Dhawan is done for years now, just that our blind selectors don't have eyes to see that obvious thing.

His strike rate this year is 74 inspite of playing Zimbabwe also which not all got to face. I would drop Dhawan and go with Gill and Iyer in my 15 man ODI squad.

All thanks to Kejriwal and intelligent population of Delhi who always vote for the right candidate. :inti

Incredible by Indian reserve players.

The likes of Gill, Kishan, Iyer, Samson are as good as the so-called best players of most other countries. They are incredibly lucky to not get regular chances because they are competing with players like Kohli, Rohit and Rahul.

Pandya was right about the fact that India has enough to talent to field two title winning teams in the same tournament.

India B is probably the second best team in Asia after India A.

Dhawan has been a terrific ODI opener for India over the last 10 years. He is part of the greatest top 3 in ODI cricked history.

Unfortunately, he seems like a spent force now. It would be sad to see him not get a proper farewell in home World Cup next year which seems like the ideal stage for him to walk off, but the time has come for Gill to take his place in the squad.

Devdutt Padikkal is another guy India has to keep an eye on. 22 years old. Yesterday made 122 in 64 balls in domestic T20. Venkatesh Iyer 62 in 31 balls.

He is such a panauti.

When you consider that Rohit and Kohli are there to complete our top-3 in ODIs, I get an eerie feeling about next year's ODI WC.

Guys like Jaiswal (who has huge hunger for big scores), Padikkal, prithvi shaw are ready as well. India's problem was always finding niche players for T20. Also finding players with multi skills. They are all good in one department. No extra skill. INdia struggles to balance a side because of that. They end up leaving some deserved players.

India completed a come-from-behind 2-1 One-Day International (ODI) series victory over the Proteas after winning the third game by a comfortable seven wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Tuesday.

In what was a forgettable performance for the tourists, they were bowled out for just 99 on a tricky two-paced pitch on which the spinners shared eight wickets. It was their lowest total ever against the India in a 50-over game and fourth lowest overall.

The hosts were never really troubled in reply and cruised to their winning target in just 19.1 overs to seal an emphatic win. It means they added the ODI series victory to the 2-1 triumph in the three-game T20 International (T20I) scoreline secured during the first part of the tour.

South Africa would have been hopeful of a much better showing in what was the final match of the tour before they depart for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia later this week. They went into the game again without rested captain Temba Bavuma after he took ill ahead of the previous game, while number one spinner Keshav Maharaj was also sidelined for the same reason.

After winning the toss and fielding, the home side had their visitors in trouble as early as the third over when off-break bowler Washington Sundar (2/15) had Quinton de Kock top edge to short third-man for six.

Seamer Mohammed Siraj (2/17) then landed a double blow in the eight and 10th overs when he dismissed Janneman Malan (15) and Reeza Hendricks (3) respectively to leave the Proteas on 26 for three.

Rookie spinner Shahbaz Ahmed (2/32) accounted for Aiden Markram and top-scorer Heinrich Klaasen (34) either side of stand-in captain David Miller (7) falling to Sundar and Andile Phehlukwayo (5) being removed by another slow bowler Kuldeep Yadav.

The latter then went on to mesmerise the tail and finish as the pick of the bowlers with four for 18 – the South Africans shot out in 27.1 overs.

It was their lowest against India in ODIs beating the 117 they scored at Nairobi in 1999. Their previous lowest scores in 50-over cricket where 83 against England at Manchester earlier this year, 83 against the same opponents in Nottingham (2008) and their all-time low of 69 versus Australia at Sydney (1993).

The 100-target proved too easy for India, who chased it down with more than 30 overs to spare. Shubman Gill (49) and Shreyas Iyer (28 not out) lead the way through most of the chase, while there was a wicket each for Lungi Ngidi (1/21) and Bjorn Fortuin (1/20).

God plz let harshal and chahal go. They r really bad. They should have picked siraj and sunder any day. Did anyone hear bangar’s comments on World Cup picks. My blood boiled. No wonder we are so pathetic

Dhawan is a beast in ICC trophies, he would be in the opening slot. He is our best leftie top-order batsman at this moment, in ODI. He was never a bi-lateral run maker.

Well played India!
Fact check: India hasn’t won a title since 2013.
I agree that India is an assembly line of technical batsmen who can score consistently from 90 to 100 SR. There are like 10 clones of what Shreyas Iyer can do in India Today. But that’s about it. And they lack in versatility in talent today.
Bowling talent is very good but not mind blowing. Apart from SKY, most Indian batsmen don’t have the same high gears as Eng/Aus/SA, and crumble under the burden of expectations.
