After winning the opening match of the T20I series, India will look to seal the series with a victory at Dharamsala.

Overview

India vs Sri Lanka, second T20I

Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala

February 25, 7:00 PM local

The three-match T20I series between India and Sri Lanka kicked off with the home team taking a 1-0 lead after a comfortable 62-run triumph in the first game in Lucknow.

Ishan Kishan’s 89 off 56 balls along with a 57 from Shreyas Iyer helped India set a big target of 200 for the Sri Lankan batters.

India had a brilliant opening partnership of 111 runs between Kishan and captain Rohit Sharma (44) before Iyer took the reins ensuring his team had a commanding total on the board.

The Sri Lanka batters never seemed like they were in control of the chase after losing opener Pathum Nissanka (0) off the first ball of the innings. They continued to lose wickets at regular intervals throughout the innings, thanks to some disciplined bowling display by the Indian bowlers.

The hosts will look to maintain their all-round performance heading into the second T20I, with several players looking to stake a claim for a playing XI spot with the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2022 just a few months away.

The visitors on the other hand would be hoping for a complete reset with both the bat and ball in their quest to keep the series alive.

One bright spot for Sri Lanka was the gritty inning by Charith Asalanka who scored an unbeaten 53 off 47 deliveries helping his team cross the third-digit mark. Dushmantha Chameera also had a late cameo with the quick 24* (14) to finish the innings.

Remember the last time

After winning the toss in the first ODI at Lucknow, the visitors chose to bowl first. India made 199 runs in their allotted 20 overs with Ishan Kishan top-scoring much to the delight of the home fans, before Shreyas Iyer adding the finishing touches with a wonderful innings.

Chasing the total, Sri Lanka were restricted to 36/3 at the end of the seventh over and kept losing wickets regularly to derail their innings.

India On The Verge Of Joining Pakistan In Elite List And Equalling New Zealand's Big Record

India are on the verge of joining arch-rivals Pakistan in an elite list of teams to have achieved a special feat in T20I cricket.

India are on the verge of joining arch-rivals Pakistan in an elite list of teams in T20I cricket. With 99 wins in T20I cricket so far, India are behind only Pakistan in the list of international teams with most victories in the format. Pakistan, who have played 189 T20I matches so far, have won 117 matches in T20Is. This does not include wins in super overs or other forms of tie breakers. India, on the other hand, have won 99 matches from a total of 157 matches played so far. India, thus, have a higher success rate in terms of win percentage, as compared to Pakistan. With the 2nd T20I of a three-match series against Sri Lanka in Dharamshala on Saturday, India have the chance to join Pakistan to become only the second team with 100 or more T20I wins. Both Pakistan and India are some distance ahead of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, who are placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the list.

On the other hand, one more win in home conditions for India will equal the record for joint most wins by a team at their respective home conditions alongside New Zealand.

Moreover, if India manage to win the 2nd T20I against Sri Lanka, it will be India's 16th win against them. It will see India have the joint most wins by a team against any opposition in T20Is alongside Pakistan with 16 wins vs Zimbabwe.

In the opening T20I of the series against Sri Lanka on Thursday, India sealed a comfortable win by 62 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Why Jadeja play T20s? He has got worst stats by any all rounder in this format.

I've been saying this for ages. Jadeja is a such a baggage for T20s, ODIs and overseas tests. Wastes one crucial slot.

Only games he should play are home tests. However, he is on sick bed more often than not even for home tests.

I wonder how and why he gets injured so often.

SL scored 72 runs in last 4 overs, that's huge!

Samson getting into his zone now. Looked like a deer in headlight before tha last couple of hits.

I know SL bowling isn't great but where was this batting in WT20?

Kohli should not be automatic selection in this team any longer! His strike rate is too low for this format.

India - 153/3 15/20 ov CRR: 10.20
Sri Lanka - 183/5 20/20 ov RR: 9.15
IND require 31 runs with 30 balls remaining | Req RR: 6.20

You know things are bad when Ravi Jadeja is hitting boundaries for fun against you.
Atrocious fielding effort as well.

India finally have nailed the t20

4 openers who go all out - Rohit rahul kishan and Samson. Kishan is a little bit concerned against extreme pace though . But aiming to score in power plays

Kohli , sky , shreyas Ayer as highly capable middle order players with high strike rates and different attributes ( Kohli is v good against extreme pace )

Pant , jadeja and Venkatesh Ayer as no 5 -6 finishers with hooda being added due to bowling skills

Thakur , sundar , chahar and Pandya at no 7-8 ( bowling allrounders . B kumar too

Chahar , bishnoi , yadav - slot for single wrists spinner at no 9

Bumrah , Shami , avesh and siraj as rotating squad members

Players at playing out of their comfort zones . Rohit comes at 4 , 3 and sometimes opens . Jadeja at 4 or 5 . Dravid is surely doing what chapel wanted to do .
Even before the World Cup , india was trying to be a good t20 side . Chasing teams loosing the World Cup was a sort of bad luck for india . But india has been consistent in top 3 t20 sides .

I wouldn't get my hopes high after few win. T20 is an unpredictable format. We may win 15-20 continuous match but if luck doesn't favour and 1-2 loss at crucial stage of WC will continue our disappointment.

Let us not read much into Samson, Kishan and Jadeja.

Jadeja was very lucky that he was helped by some sorry fielding, no balls and poor bowling at the start( bowling in slot mostly). Same for Samson, a couple of singles went for boundaries and a number of shots played by him were hit in the air with no timing and nervy body language.

Kishan's batting today also showed that on wickets where there is assistance, he struggles to get going. He is your Fakhar Zaman type hitter, good on pitches where ball is coming on bat very well but struggles aside. No disrespect to Fakhar but that is what I have mostly read from my fellow Pakistani fans.

V Iyer seems a fine package as long as format is T20s as I have said it earlier. It is in ODIs where he might not be all that good. Shardul is also poor in limited overs.

SKY and Shreyas are the only shine.

True . But I am liking the approach . This is same approach india adapted prior to England t20 series . World Cup was a bit of bad luck but also Afridi was brilliant .

But india is on path to correct our weakness - middle order . The two Ayer’s , pant , jadeja , Samson and rahul are all doing a good job . India will be a title contender again . Not just top heavy .

Jadeja has proven time and again that he is a reliable bat . Samson is bit like Rohit . He has more time to play his shots than anyone else I see other than Rohit . Think he will surprise a few - the three sixes he hit were Rohit like .

Indian approach to World Cup prep is a nice one . They have replacements ready for each slot , tremendous competition for places and nobody is playing for a spot but more for the team .

India skipper Rohit Sharma on Saturday heaped praise on the team's batters, saying it was pleasing to see the middle-order shouldering the responsibility after the early dismissals of openers. "I think it was pleasing to see for us the middle order coming out and performing. It is good to see those guys taking the responsibility and finishing off games. To finish the way they did was really good," Rohit said at the post-match presentation after India defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the second T20 in Dharamsala. After the early dismissals of Rohit and Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer hit a whirlwind unbeaten 74 as India registered the comfortable win to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Besides Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja blasted 45 off 18 balls as India chased down the target of 184 with 17 deliveries to spare and register their 11th straight win in the format. Sanju Samson also contributed 39 off 25 balls.

The Indian bowlers leaked runs in the last five overs but Rohit refused to put the blame on his bowling unit.

"I don't want to be too harsh on the bowlers. It can happen these days, but we restricted them (Sri Lanka) in the first 15 overs. It was a good pitch to bat on as well," he said.

Rohit also praised Jadeja and man-of-the-match Iyer for their batting performances. "Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) came and looked positive from ball one and Shreyas as well," he added.

Losing skipper Dasun Shanaka said that his team started well but rued their under-performance in the powerplay overs -- both with bat and ball.

"We started really well, but we should've done more in the powerplay. If we got another wicket in powerplay, it could've been better for us.

"Lahiru must bowl at the first six overs. The game was set for me, the wicket was good and the ball was there for me. See another series lost, but if we get a win out of here it will be a positive," he said.

By his own admission, Iyer was mighty impressed with his own batting performance.

"That (back and across) is my go-to movement and I feel my body releases and I sight the ball well. It was really important for me to time the ball because it was swinging and seaming," he said.

He praised Samson and Jadeja for giving him support during the chase.

"Sanju came in and we built a crucial partnership. Jaddu bhai came in and it was a cruise. I realised that the ball was not turning and thought stepping out would be a good option. Even if I mistime it on this ground, the ball would go to the boundary." The third and final T20 will be played here on Sunday.

Shreyas Iyer (74*) and Ravindra Jadeja (45*) helped India chase down a target of 184 in only 17.1 overs in the second T20I against Sri Lanka in Dharamsala, with the hosts now taking an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma called it right at the toss and elected to field first. India named an unchanged XI while Sri Lanka drafted in Danushka Gunathilaka and Binura Fernando in place of Janith Liyanage and Jeffrey Vandersay. It seemed to be a wise call from the skipper as the grass on the pitch meant that the Indian seamers were jagging the ball around in the opening few overs. It was a slow start for the Gunathilaka and Pathum Nissanka, who only scored 32 runs in the Powerplay as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah kept them in check.

Sri Lanka started to up the ante after the Powerplay, targeting the spin of Ravindra Jadeja. In the ninth over, Gunathilaka hit him for a 16 in the first three deliveries. But the opener got carried away and went for another big one. A mistimed slog sweep would bring an end to his knock of 38 as he found Venkatesh Iyer in the deep.

Charith Asalanka would walk back in the very next over for 2 as Yuzvendra Chahal trapped him lbw. He reviewed the call unsuccessfully as Sri Lanka lost their second wicket before the halfway mark.

Kamil Mishara could not contribute much to the scorecard either, perishing for 1 as a slower delivery from Harshal Patel completely outfoxed him, with Shreyas Iyer taking the catch at short cover.

Nissanka though again showcased why he is such a highly-rated talent in Sri Lankan cricket. He started to play some fluent shots off his blade despite losing Dinesh Chandimal from the other end, who was gone for 9 against Bumrah. Nissanka would bring up his fifty, the fifth of his young career and was proving to be the lone warrior for the visitors.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka joined Nissanka at the crease and their partnership completely changed the complexion of the game. They targeted the Indian pacers, hitting some massive sixes, clearing the boundary with ease. Shanaka, especially, was brutal with his shotmaking while Nissanka was more meticulous in terms of piercing the field.

They established a partnership of 58 in only 26 deliveries before Nissanka was trapped by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 75, in what was an innings of great substance.

Shanaka though would continue the assault in the final over against Harshal Patel, smashing 23 runs as Sri Lanka posted a competitive score of 183/5. Shanaka was unbeaten on 47 off only 19 deliveries as the visitors plundered 74 runs in the last four overs against the Indian attack.

The finish gave the Lankans a lot of confidence and they came out flying in their bowling innings. Rohit's struggles against Dushmantha Chameera continued as he played on to walk back for 1.

Ishan Kishan copped a blow from a pacy delivery from Lahiru Kumara, which clearly unsettled him. Kumara would eventually get his dismissal for 16 with Shanaka taking a simple catch at mid-on.

With India in trouble, the onus was on Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson to steady the ship. While the latter took his time to get settled in, Iyer continued on from his blistering form from the first match in Lucknow.

He was especially severe against the spin of Praveen Jayawickrama, playing some terrific shots down the ground. Iyer would bring up his half-century in the 11th over while the pair also brought up a 50-run stand. Samson was also starting to look comfortable at the crease as the hosts were timing the chase with perfection.

A pure moment of magic from Binura Fernando at slip would finally break the partnership for Sri Lanka. Samson, who was now in full flight went for a big one against Kumara and got a thick edge off the bat. Fernando then went flying and plucked a catch out of thin air bringing an end to Samson's knock of 39.

Jadeja would then walk out and unleash sheer carnage, taking the game away from the visitors. He was aided some poor fielding, while he was severe on the Lankan pacers. Jadeja would race away to a score of 45* in 18 balls while Iyer remained unbeaten on 74 as India comfortably chased down the target with 16 deliveries remaining.

With the victory, the hosts took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series with the final match to be played at the same venue on Sunday.
