India 245 all out! England need 378 to win - can they do it?

==

Miracle of Edgbaston or and humiliation for England?

It was a great chase if Eng can cross it.

Key will be not losing too many wickets in the first 30 overs. Balls are faulty and it gets easier to score runs later. This rain and poor ball quality have taken some fun out of this test.

Yes they can. India's batting today was horrendous. No intent to score or bat time. Some really pathetic cricket today. Deserve to lose for this.

Great 50 runs without losing wickets. Just double it and it will go a long way in winning this. Eng has nothing to lose here. 1-2 or 1-3 is same, so just play freely.

England's approach is perfect. Play till 80 overs and get to the total of 378. Just take the second new ball out of equation. Second new ball is a chance and a motivation factor for pacers to come back and turn things around.

50 up.

BazBall wiggling its tail :srt

C'mon, entertain us. Let's see you burn up like a stack of dry hay

England can chase this target, this is absolutely doable.

There is more than enough time; Dukes ball is getting softer quicker than usual, just need to right temperament from England top order. In particular, Crawley, this seems like his last chance to prove his worth.

Would be some collapse now from england to mess this run chase up. India have lacked ideas with ball in these 20 overs so far.

I don’t think that England will quite get over the line in the end because India have quality bowlers and it’s such a huge target.

But to even set themselves a target under 400 was a really good comeback effort from Stokes and his bowlers.

And this has been a highly admirable start from the English openers & the team. They are being bold and really going for it.

England have got to India today and had the best of the two sessions so far. It’s something for England fans to enjoy and be proud of.

Yeah, today England fans can't really complain. They were decent with the ball and pretty great with the bat so far. Have to avoid a collapse now.

Yes .. because of their red hot form..

Not happening

WICKET! Lees run out (Shami) 56 – England 109-3
INDIA STRIKE AGAIN! And it’s an awful mix-up between Root and Lees.

Bairstow-root-Stokes till they are there it’s possible..

India are favorites because target is close to 400.

But, England also have a reasonably good chance.

204 to win with 7 wickets remaining

Still don’t think it will happen

I am preempting a humble pie thread. ;)

Obviously I hope England will win! :)

Thought it was one in a thousand longshot this morning, but there is a realistic chance of it happening now.

India favourites though.

England will walk this. In fact they are already.

Only one real wicket left after these two at the crease. Billings is a rookie. If they put on another hundred I might start to believe.

This is England's game to lose.

Unless a huge collapse happen, India are not winning this.

England will have to bottle it up from here to lose it.

If YJB and Root66 can bring this to within 50, I think we might be ok then. Unless and until that happens, we are in a vulnerable position.

Not getting 150 runs from here will be a really poor result from Eng.

Eng is favorite to win from here.

Easier said than done.

Bumrah and co arent there to make the numbers.

Not really. Teams have sometimes defended 150 in the fourth innings and taken all 10 wickets. Still a long way to go.

I’m guessing English fans are posting safe lol, there is no way to lose from here, it’s a straightforward chase no demons..

Anything can happen on the 5th day.

But boy oh boy! England play tremendous cricket.

Credit to the skipper and the coach.

Babar Azam & co better be watching this game! Seekho kuch England se!

Stokes probably has to play another knock keeping nerves of steel for it to happen.

When Root and Bairstow walked off hugging each other, that's when my sagging spirits lifted.

India got this boys :bumrah

This is Test cricket and one wicket can change the dynamic of the game very quickly.

And 378 is still a massive target to chase. Test history shows us that more than 9 times out of 10 this ends in failure.

However England seem a totally rejuvenated side under McCullum and have lately played some unbelievable cricket.

So putting those factors into the equation England are 60/40 favourites. But India by now means out of it. However they definitely they will be panicking at this stage as they need to break this partnership quickly tomorrow morning.

It’s been a great season for England, top class effort from them.

Lees: England in unbelievable position

Alex Lees is confident England can finish the job tomorrow morning.

"We’re obviously in an unbelievable position within this game," Lees said.

"Obviously, Jonny’s in the form of his life and Rooty doesn’t stop churning runs.

"I think that first hour will be really important, but I’m backing everybody from 1-11 that we should get over the line."

Still feel there will be a few more twists and turns in this match.

I know England are closing in on the total but I feel that India are still favourites. An early wicket tomorrow and England could collapse.

I think it’s evens.

England have done pretty well to even make it this far tbh. 259/3 is a really good score in the 4th innings.

India technically need 7 wickets to win, but really they just need 3: Root, Bairstow, Stokes.

After that, it’s just the wicketkeeper and the tailenders, and they won’t get much.

This is Test cricket. Anything can happen.

Looking forward to it.

England to win by 5 wickets, i think they will lose 1 wicket early tomorrow and 1 just before the target is reached. Game will be over in 1st session, weather permitting.

Too much pessimism by Eng fans in this thread.

If England fans think England cannot score 119 with 7 wickets in a full day's session then give up on Bazball/New era of England Test Cricket mantra.

At least have faith in England winning, win or lose.

Evens is about right. If England get into double figures with these two at the wicket they will pass a psychological milestone. If a wicket goes, India will be ahead again.

Huh, Eng is firmly ahead right now. Not sure why so pessimistic. India needs to get both of them out quickly to have any chance.

I would think it's in 80-20 Eng's favor right now.

England is ahead if they don't loose more than 1 wicket in the first session then England will win.

India need two wickets in the first hour.

First session???
I highly doubt it.

It’s a matter of just one early break thru, and the game is wide open.

Bumrah is too good for lower middle order.

Perhaps Ben Stokes will be the only man standing between Indian n victory - and he too is not in a very good form with the bat.

English tail is way too long,

Potts/Leach/Broad/Anderson are walking wickets

Maybe McCullum should be called upon to cure AIDS, Russia/Ukraine and fix Modi.

He's incredible.

I think Baz is being given way more credit than he deserves. England always had the players. After all, they are the current World Cup holders having played a similar game.

They needed a captaincy change and the coach to give them a free run. If the Baz way was the true way, he'd have won the 2015 WC.

Also, England still have to win today. That shore is pretty distant even now :bumrah

Also, England still have to win today

Not really. Even if England fall short today this is clearly a transformed team. Yesterday they took 7-120 to bowl out India and then scored 259-3 of their own from a relatively hopeless match position. To even be in with a chance of victory at this stage is a remarkable turnaround. No England side since the one led by the two Andys (Strauss and Flower 10+ years ago) would have even been able to get this far. England fans know it and are feeling very optimistic for the future.

This will be a well deserved Indian loss.

After pulling out of the series when they shouldve won it for IPL, so much arrogance and pathetic treatment of the fans by doing that.

2-2 Tie Series to England coming up and ENG deserved the win and India deserved the loss.

You are right - Its about seizing the moment and India had it firmly in their grasp last year

I don't think India have the bowlers to trouble England in what seems to be an easy wicket to bat on. Could be i'll be eating humble pie later on:abbas2

Difference between "burn up like a stack of dry hay" and "burn up a stack of dry hay."

This was a scary chase because of its ease.

Stokes at the end said, Teams might be better than us sometimes, but never braver than us :bumrah

(He attributed the quote to Jack Leach. Who'd have thought he was capable of such erudition)

Now for England to try and emulate India and do this away :warner

378 to defend as a 4th innings total

India would have defended this total with their decent bowlers of the past such as RP Singh, Agarkar, Zaheer Khan (with the help of Kumble or Harbajhan)

How India got bulldozed like that even with two of their best ever fast bowlers in the side is totally UNBELIEVABLE!

Serious questions need to be asked of their management. That 4th innings performance by the bowlers+ captain is unacceptable

Eng are on another level atm.

Simply incredible!

ind should have seized their chance last year to win the series, but they ran away to play ipl. lol

I thought Ind would win, even in the position Eng were in last night. This is stunning victory for England and it shows that no target is safe against the onslaught from this England attitude. On the bigger picture, cricket is more entertaining and fans will love it

What a performance by England!!!
Very brave, very skilful and outstanding cricket. I have a feeling England May have changed test cricket for ever. It may be that things calm down after some hiccups. However, I can also see this attitude being adopted by other teams.
