What's new

India [265/3] beat Sri Lanka [264/7] by 7 wickets in their final group stage match of 2019 World Cup

They were desperate to fill that position and a lot of players were tried because of that. Not to mention Rahul's reluctance to bat in the middle order. Remember Kohli giving his no.3 spot to Rahul in the England series and after the flops there he was duly dumped. He go into the WC luckily on the back of his IPL performances. I think after the WC, they will try him at 3 and Kohli at 4. That should solidify the middle order with Dhoni retiring

That will be the best thing to do! Kohli at No.4 is ideal for his style of game (picking gaps & running) + the solidity needed for Indian Middle order! He will avoid those aerial shots which got him out this world cup! No.4 in all formats is the best thing for him (also he has some issues with new ball... But in SC conditions he can come down at No.3 if the first wicket falls too late!)

50 for Hitman. Needs to go after Tendulkars 673 this WC

If Rohit can keep this level till the 2023 World Cup, he will have a realistic chance of overtaking Tendulkar in terms of number of ODI hundreds.

He has scored 19 hundreds since the last World Cup, another 19 between now and 2023 World Cup would take him to 45, just 4 shy of Tendulkar.

He is 32, so there is a big possibility that he will start to lose his touch in 3-4 years, which is why he needs to make his peak count.

All we hope is rohit scores match winning knocks in the semis and hopefully finals of this world cup . Hopefully even dhoni performs a match winning role in semis and finals.

I would have been 100% confident of winning this world cup with Dhawan in the team!

Indian openers playing slowly and not trying to up the Ňrr. Total lack of intent.

Only intent is to try get to individual 100s

Can still Indian team do favor to Pakistan in any terms? (Points table, ICC Ranking, etc?)

They have already qualified to the semis. NRR not going to make difference at this point. Australia is one point ahead. Whatever the result of the respective last games of AUS and INDIA, the final points of Australia and India will mostly be different.

The only way NRR would come into play is if India wins this match and AUS gets one point (if AUS-SA match is washed off, which is unlikely to happen).

So NRR does NOT matter for India.

If SA can keep this up and score 350, Ind doesn't have to go through Eng, AUS to win the WC. Go SA!!!

It is also sad to see South Africa in this mess! They should have at least qualified for the Semis... Such an elite team since 90s...

Rahul scored 22 runs in his last 41 balls against SLs second string bowlers. He just sucks the momentum out of the game. Needs to rotate atleast

Rohit Sharma is on 65 to take his WC 2019 tally to 609 in his 8th innings to overtake Shakib's tally of 606 in 8 innings.

It might still matter for Pakistan though :)

As Faf said they had tough games upfront and they couldn't come out of it. Also Amla's poor form and loss to BD destroyed their campaign

The problem is we are used to Dhawan (a better accelerator than even Rohit) So we are expecting the same from Rahul and even Rahul might be feeling that pressure (to match Dhawan & people's expectation!) I think for one moment we can think Rahul is doing alright in this role and in this crisis (we don't have any tested alternate opener at the moment! We can groom them after this world cup!)

On the other hand Rohit has taken the full responsibility and thankfully he is punching above (This is the best consistent run we have seen in his career, that too at a big pressure stage of World Cup, that too overseas!) Rohit is the monster, Dhawan is the aggressor, Kohli is the accumulator! Its not easy to match any of these guys, these three are the BESTS in history!

Rahul is a class player. He has been mishandled by the management. Instead of wasting time with Rayudu, DK, Rahane, Karthik and Shankar at #4, they should have kept faith Rahul and given him a long rope.

He has only been given 5 ODIs at #4 and that is precisely the reason why it is considered a weak position in their lineup. Had they kept faith with him he would have delivered. Too good a player not to. He is quite close to India’s top 3 in terms of ability.

He should have been the first-choice #4 and backup opener at least after the Champions Trophy.

Mayank is an elite player. top class player. direct replacement for dhawan. check his domestic record. check his performance vs australia. dude is a phenomenal player.
Mayank should be opening in semis vs england or new zealand. Rahul should be at 4. their batting is sorted then. They would chase totals down comfortably with Mayank there.

It is absurd how superior India are to the rest of the Asian teams. The Asia Cup should be disbanded for good - the next 5-6 editions, if not more, are threatening to be as one sided as the previous two.

That is too harsh! How will the other teams improve if they don't play each other and especially against a Top team like India? That is one way of growing/improving...

Man i hate having matches against Lanka , can never judge our players performance against them coz its always OTT.

It's amazing how many mistakes Ganguly can make in a single statement

"Malings let the ball go through when fielding because his mind is buy managing teams fielding as the captain, and thinking about bowling changes and field placements, and what to do about these two set batsmen"

Then corrects himself that Malinga is the former captain, not current captain :)

Dude pakistan will be a force in the next world cup.
shaheen

great bowling attack. would be on par with the Indians and Aussies.

R Sharma 15 away from his 5th century in this WC.

What a player.

Face it SL is India's bunny always have been.
SL perform superbly against pretty much everyone else especially Pak but consistently lose to India.

Nice to see Pakistan fans recognize him for the amazing talent that he is. Big change from the days that he was called NO-HIT by Pakistan fans on this forum

SL are India's bunny in bilateral ODIs but in tournaments they often beat India

:four 5th Century for Rohit!!

What a tremendous knock for Rohit Sharma! Cant believe that Kohli was not even required too much this WC

He is such an amazing talent who can’t be ignored.

I wish we had him instead of Fakhar Zaman or Imam...

There was a 145-150 pacer in the SL team a couple of years ago.Where has he disappeared?

Rohit Sharma is a serious threat for breaking the 700+ barrier.

If I was Indian Coach I would be worried , that so far Sharma has not failed , I would not want him to fail in knock out.

NO-HIT is given by Indian fans actually and I was one of them. It was rightly so till 2013, when Rohit in his NO-HIT avatar after showing great promise initially , continued to be inconsistent and disappointing similar to the agony that is presented by KL today. Rohit finally turned it around when he started to open. Not sure if KL can do that given his first class record is not as good as that of Rohit.

He failed against WI and Afg back to back and then scored three hundreds in a row.

Kohli has not fired so far. He is due a big one in the knock outs.

The man has five 50s in his last 6 innings. He's due a big one but he has clearly fired just fine in this WC. When your team is blessed with an opener that has scored 5 centuries in 8 games, all you need is to provide a supporting role, which Kohli has done aptly.

The matches in which Rohit didn't provide a significant contribution, Kohli ended up giving the team a match-winning performance.

The key is to persist with the player through the periods of inconsistency. Pakistan needs to persist with its young talent, be it Imam or Haris or Fakhar or Babar. They will eventually come good. Give them time, don't criticise them too much and make them feel insecure about their positions.

Exactly. Not to forget Dhawan hit a 100 too against Australia.

Kohli shouldn't change his number 3 position for anyone ever. :inti

It is my dream to see rahul score at a SR above 100 once in this world cup

Well yeah you are right.

That is how Sharma has evolved his game.

Absolutely 2nd this. We need to find an actual no 4 not shoe horn our best player into that position.
I don't know. Kohli would make just as good a No. 4 as he would a No. 3. Don't think it would affect him. If Rahul does well at the top of the order, it might be worth it. Rahul at 3 and Kohli at 4 has worked in T20Is at least.
