What's new

India [272/9] beat Pakistan [69] by 203 runs in the ICC Under-19 World Cup semi-final

Emotions aside, Pak U19 just had a bad day on the wrong day. They are not as bad as the score suggests. They did beat a good South African side just a couple of days ago. There will be a few good players from this side that you'll see in the senior team in the years to come.
Often people react and make judgment based on a given day's performance, but reaching the semi final in a highly competitive space is not something to sneer at.
While the Indian team was the better one on the day, I can visualize some of these Pakistani youngsters maturing more in the years to come and represent their country with pride.
Cheers and Peace!

Our head coach and selectors needs to be awarded heavily for this great achievement . Well done PCB!!!

Relax boys it's only u19 world cup. I think some people getting to sentimental about this. U19 is about introducing youngsters in to world stage west it indies won the lost world cup where is there senior team at right now?

Congratulations to Indian U19s on a stupendous performance. This is beyond doubt a thumping win and annihilation. Well done.

As for Pakistani friends, always remember you beat us in the most dramatic world cup final in U19 history in early 2000s but its the Indian players from that team that ultimately had better international careers than the winning team. The journey for these boys has just begun, way to go. The race is still on. India seems to be harvesting rewards from their investment in the set up, getting guys like Dravid on board really helped.

Always yours,
Bhaijaan.

Miya geere .... magar taang ooper !!!!!

Time will tell. It is good to not over react in a bad loss or good victory. Generally Pakistani cricketers mature a little late in time, so miya taang oopar kiyay gire hon par uthenge bhi unhi taango per.

I remember 10-15 years ago U-19 never used to get that much coverage as of now. U-19 is just an academy to graduate for bigger things to come.

India has produce some great cricketers from under 19 system. Kohli, Yuvraj, Dhawan, Pujara, Rohit. Hope that trend continues.

The context was U19 WC, not IND, PAK or BD. I know these countries better than others, so it comes. Afif scored a matching winning 70 just day before yesterday against ENG team, while chasing. Rest part or your post only time will tell.

i said it before and again now...BD players have all fundamental covered ..on the other hand we have fundamentals to be covered by Basit ALI>>>>>

Gone were the days when "Pakistan meh bohot talent hai" :uakmal

I am actually pleased with the talent on display for this side. There are atleast 3 potential international cricketers (the 3 pacers) in this side hope they are nurtured well.

Glad that our kids took the revenge of CT Finals. Hopefully we will see less reminders about CT Finals on PP at least till next Seniors World Cup!

Good job boyss!!! Pakistan's quicks are impressive . Best I've seen. And way better than Zia,Sameen Gul etc. But this time around the batting was terrible and, surprisingly, I didn't see any good spinners.

India saw off Pakistan with ruthless efficiency to seal a massive 203-run victory in the second semi-final of the 2018 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup. Shubman Gill set things up with an unbeaten 102 that helped India post a mammoth 272/9 after opting to bat, before Ishan Porel’s 4/17 dismantled Pakistan – they were bundled out for 69, their lowest total in ICC U19 CWC history.

Pakistan had a few moments in the first innings, especially with Muhammad Musa (4/67) and Arshad Iqbal (3/51) running through India’s middle order to cause the batsmen a few jitters. However, Gill’s mesmeric century – he posted his sixth consecutive fifty-plus total in U19 ODIs – was ultimately telling.

The Pakistan batsmen needed something special to seal victory thereafter – their best-ever chase in U19 World Cups, in fact – but appeared daunted by the task that awaited them. Eventually, India sealed a date with Australia in the final in Tauranga on Saturday.

India opted to bat, giving a sizable chunk of fans at the Hagley Oval an early look at the possible future of this India-Pakistan rivalry – Prithvi Shaw facing up to Shaheen Afridi. Prithvi was typically superior with his technique, barely giving the bowlers a sniff, but Manjot Kalra used up many of his lives at the other end – he was dropped twice by Zaid Alam, off Shaheen on 24 and on 29 off Hassan Khan. He carried on to score a 59-ball 47, but the first to fall was Prithvi, run out unfortunately after attempting a quick single. Three overs later, Manjot’s dismissal by Musa reduced India to 94/2.

Gill came in and took charge after that, virtually ensuring Pakistan were better off just focusing on the other end. It yielded some success, with Arshad Iqbal running through the middle order, dismissing all of Harvik Desai (20), Riyan Parag (2) and Abhishek Sharma (5).

Shubman did most of the scoring though, putting on 54 with Desai to revive the innings after the openers’ dismissal, and a crucial 67 with Anukul Roy (33 off 45), who himself plundered the Pakistan bowlers in the final stretch.

Roy was caught behind down the leg side off Musa, but Gill carried on to complete his century in dramatic circumstances. He was on 99 when he got on strike with one ball remaining. He got to three figures after he was dropped by Hassan in the deep. It further turned out that that was a no-ball, although they could yield just one run from the free-hit that followed.

By the end of the innings, the frustration for Pakistan was evident, their players barely concealing their feelings when teammates didn’t capitalise on an opening or were too lax in the field. There were plenty of fielding lapses, a couple of no-balls and all in all, it wasn’t a session these players will particularly want to remember. It would only get worse.

The Indian pacemen proved incredibly hard to handle, zipping and shaping the ball around. Pakistan’s batsmen’s temperament has been suspect all tournament, and today, it was laid bare for all to see. With Shivam Mavi building pressure from one end with three consecutive maidens, Ishan Porel capitalised at the other – he had all of Zaid Alam (7), Imran Shah (2) and Ali Zaryab (1) dismissed in consecutive overs. Pakistan were 20/3.

Pakistan soon reached a state of desperation. Ammad Alam (4) became Porel’s fourth wicket, holing out after slicing an attempted drive. It was then the turn of the spinners – Mohammad Taha holed out as well to become Shiva Singh’s first of two victims, and when Rohail Nazir then charged Riyan Parag and holed out as well, you could sense his frustration. He had until then batted with restraint, but abandoned the plan when he realised it was a lost cause.

A similar fate awaited Hassan and Afridi, and it was telling that Pakistan’s only positive in the innings was a 20-run ninth-wicket partnership between Saad Khan and Musa. Both found the fence, with Musa even lifting Shiva over long-off for a six. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to avoid that unwanted record – their lowest total in U19 World Cup history.

Ruthless from India, but that’s what champion sides do.

Not sure to be honest - it's not about how good you are, rather there has to be an spot open. Shaw might get a call in Test side, because opening slot is loose, but Gill is a middle order and behind Iyer, but he'll be in squad for sure. 6/7 years back, there was another fantastic kid (Manpreet I believe, 2010 WC), still couldn't make the team & his time is gone I guess. On contrary, Dhawan & Pujara were top scorers of 2004 & 2006 - it took Dhawan long, long time because of Sehwag, Gambhir, T'kar, but Pujara & Rohit made the team quickly. Three pacers, I am not sure actually they are better than what already is there. Remeber, IK Pathan was a sensation at U19 level, so was Ishant and they were physically much gifted than all 3 here. Normally, I have seen Indian pacers starts with a bang, then couple of years time decides to prolong career rather than going for pace. Not sure any of them will have long career for IND though - Agarkar was similar to Nagarkoti, but he could bat and had lot less competition. I think, 2 batsmen has the best chance here.

For Musa, it's almost about luck - whose who, so can't tell. Besides, kid looks much older than his official age, hence what we are watching might be his peak speed - if so, he won't go much further. Jamshed Ahmed was more skilled than any pacer on display today and he was 6'3"+, bowling at least 135K - couldn't find even a FC career after winning U19 WC.
Irfan Pathan and Ishant were physically gifted than Nagarkoti and Mavi? See the way these two are moving in the field and taking catches. We never had any fast bowlers as athletic and fit as these two ever in our history. And Indian pacers losing pace is an old story. Find me one pacer who debuted after 2012 and slowed down.In fact there are examples like Bhuvi, Bumrah and even Sangwan who increased their pace. Look at Khalil Ahmed himself.Dude was trundling at 120s last world cup and is now a 140 + bowler. The support system and mentality in Indian cricket has completely changed and you will see more such kids in coming days.

Glad that our kids took the revenge of CT Finals. Hopefully we will see less reminders about CT Finals on PP at least till next Seniors World Cup!

You are comparing an U-19 match with a ICC champions trophy final which was seen live by 1.5 billion people across the globe ?

What is good here is the fact that despite people telling us that India doesnt care about playing against Pakistan, the fact is that the general Indian public wants matches to be played

A Test Series home and Away in UAE/India will be interesting to watch.

It's weird actually. On the one hand I don't see (around me) and personally feel too bad that we are not playing Pakistan, but when a match comes along, there is nothing that grips your day as much as an Ind-Pak clash. So it's like - if it's not happening, OK. But if it is, boy we must win (except personally for me when Afridi was around - didn't mind losing if he was the reason :)

Not really. But a gentle yet firm reminder that it's business as usual at the World Cup :)

PS: Apologies for the multiple posts

This has not been a terrible world cup for Pakistan.Just had a poor outing today against a strong Indian unit. What we want to see in U-19 WC's is 3-4 really good players who have the potential to go on and play for the senior team in a year or two and well this year we have found 3 really good pacers.Batting didn't click and some of the players really disappointed. This year we had really good pacers in our team, they were way better than what we had send in the previous editions of U-19 WC.I hope PCB keeps an eye on Musa,Shaheen and Arshad. We probably would have loved to have the batsmen that were playing for us in previous edition along with the pacers of this edition. That would have been some team.

Battered.

Impressed with the bowling on both sides though. Pak did very well to restrict this Ind side under 300. S Gill is the real deal.

Shubman Gill produced a classy century in the face of some fine fast bowling as India marched into their sixth final at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup with a facile 203 runs victory over Pakistan at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

In front of broadcast cameras, Gill’s innings of 102 not out in the second Super League semi-final helped India post a challenging 272 for nine even as Pakistan bowlers Muhammad Musa and Arshad Iqbal bowled their hearts out to share seven scalps.

In reply, Pakistan were bundled out for 69 in 29.3 overs, their lowest total to date in the tournament.

In the final in Tauranga on 3 February, India play Australia, whom they had defeated by 100 runs in the preliminary league. Both the sides have won the title three times each, which means Saturday’s winners will become the most successful nation in the history of the tournament.

In the third-fourth position play-off, Pakistan will take on Afghanistan on 1 February and will aim to avenge their five-wicket defeat in their tournament opener.

Meanwhile, in the match to decide the seventh place, England defeated New Zealand by 32 runs at the John Davies Oval in Queenstown with Tom Banton’s fine knock of 112 helping score 261 for seven and Evan Woods and Will Jacks grabbing three wickets each to stifle the chase.

India v Pakistan Super League semi-final:

Shubman Gill capitalized on his fine form to produce a timely century. Indian batsmen were made to wage it out in the face of inspired spells from Musa and Arshad and the three-time champions needed that one big innings to set a challenging target.

Gill, who was later declared player of the match, said he was only looking to score maximum runs rather than get to a century.

“I think there was not too much going in my mind. I was just playing the balls on merit. I was just thinking that not too many batsmen are left, so was just thinking one ball at a time. At 99, I was only looking to run as fast as I could.

"This was a special innings in a big match against Pakistan and their bowlers were bowling very well. I thought 250-260 would be a good-enough total for the pacers to defend. I’m now looking forward to playing Australia in the final.”

Gill took charge after openers Manjot Kalra (47, 59b, 7x4) and Prithvi Shaw (41, 42b, 3x4, 1x6) had added 89. Captain Shaw’s run out gave Pakistan a window of opportunity and there was a keen battle in the mid overs as Anukul Roy (33) and Harvik Desai (20) contributed useful knocks but Musa (4-67) and Arshad (3-51) chipped away to ensure things were not easy for India.

Gill, who has played first-class cricket for Punjab and was recently picked by Kolkata Knight Riders to play in the Indian Premier League, took the mantle on himself with an authoritative century. Gill played along the ground for the first part of his 94-ball innings but was not afraid to loft the ball later, even though all his seven boundary hits were fours.

This was Gill’s sixth consecutive score of 50 or more. He had struck two fifties on a tour of England in August and three earlier in this tournament – 63 against Australia, 90 not out versus Zimbabwe and 86 versus Bangladesh in the quarter-finals. He did not get to bat in a 10-wicket win over Papua New Guinea in the preliminary league.

Gill got to his century off what was to be the last ball of the innings. He lofted Musa to long-off, where captain Hassan Khan dropped an easy catch. Gill ran two to move from 99 to 101 but was to learn later that it was a no-ball. He then got a single off the resultant free-hit to complete the innings.

Pakistan were never in the chase as fast bowler Ishan Porel removed openers Zaid Alam (7) and Imran Shah (2) in successive overs and grabbed the prized wicket of Ali Zaryab to reduce Pakistan to 20 for three. Rohail Nazir’s score of 18 was the highest score in the innings while Porel finished with impressive figures of 6-2-17-4.

Pakistan captain Hassan Khan said his team had not buckled under pressure but was outplayed: “I don’t think the team was feeling any pressure. A lot of the boys were high on morale and were enjoying themselves. But Shubnam started well, and we misfielded a few as well.

“I think we did well (in India’s innings), given how the pitch was, our fast bowlers and spinners did well. If we had put in more effort in the field, we might have been able to keep them to a lesser total and it would have been a different story.”

Play-off match for seventh place:

England overcame their early struggles through a fourth-wicket partnership between Tom Banton (112, 122b, 10x4, 3x6) and left-hander Jack Davies (63, 76b 5x4 1x6) after electing to bat.

The pair added 139 runs in 26 overs to resurrect the side from a precarious 48 for three after pace bowler Luke Georgeson bowled Liam Banks (10) to trigger a mini collapse. Georgeson also bowled Davies later in the day and finished with impressive figures of 10-1-29-3. All-rounder Rachin Ravindra took two for 80 with his left-arm spin bowling.

For New Zealand, Finn Allen (87) and Katene Clark (60) batted well but the side lost the way with some run outs and due to some tight bowling. Will Jacks (3-41) and Evan Woods (3-44) were the main wreckers while Dillon Pennington took two wickets for England.

Revenge for the CT eh? So what exactly was Pakistan avenging when they beat India in the CT final? All the defeats before that, I suppose,

Please refrain from making brainless and idiotic posts like this. Exhibiting one's immaturity on the internet is never a good idea.

I am talking my sy about height - fitness you can develop through training & diet, but can’t grow height.

For the rest part, opposite example is VRB Singh, Shami; but may be its changing.

Shami is not losing pace, him and Yadav are unfit.

I am certain about one thing now - Afghan’s showed better off field intelligence than their on field cricket. They deliberately lost a close game to IRL so that, they end up 2nd on NRR and avoid that half of SF, which cuts path with IND.

India has produce some great cricketers from under 19 system. Kohli, Yuvraj, Dhawan, Pujara, Rohit. Hope that trend continues.

Dhawan and Rohit being billed as 'great'?!?

They are lucky to be tagged as good.

Height doesn't mean physically more gifted.Just Youtube Vince Carter's Dunk of Death over 7 2" French center, you will get to know that.Ishant or Pathan are not even half physically good as Nagarkoti neither they bowled this fast at this young age.And VRV Singh is history and that is why I said pacers debuting after 2012.And Shami losing pace? Did you even watch his fiery spell in the third test? He was easily clocking 145 kph there.

Why dragging? If it has changed, better for Indian cricket. Ishant is 6’5” and at debut (Bangalore), he looked faster than Nagorkoti; Nagorkoti I read 5’8”- if you think it doesn’t matter for a fast bowler, so it be.

Island clocked 130-138 during his debut against Pakistan, it was against Australia did he clocked 152.6 kph also, no Nagarkotti is way more athletic than Ishant and pathan, hell even mavi looks plus over both at under 19 level.

Most PPers think that way (1 CT win > all Indian World Cup wins because of the margin of defeat. Hence I thought today's victory is similar and hence revenge)

When he says physically "gifted" he means something that they have not developed - gift as in gift from god, not developed. Small men if they work out can become stronger; if they run and run and run, they become faster and get more stamina; if they practice a lot, they become better at what they do. Despite all of that, whatever they do, they will not become taller.

BCCI to announce cash award for U-19 World Cup cricketers

NEW DELHI: The BCCI will announce cash award for the Indian players for reaching the final of the U-19 World Cup and also felicitate them, acting president CK Khanna said on Tuesday.

Congratulating the team for beating Pakistan in the semi-finals in Christchurch in New Zealand, Khanna said, "I would like to congratulate the entire team and coach Rahul Dravid for this performance. Rahul's contribution in guiding the Gen Next cricketers has been immense. Because of him we now have a talented pool of U-19 cricketers."

"The BCCI will announce cash awards and also felicitate the team," he said.

But being tall doesn't guarantee u of success, ishant himself is an example of that, its the work ethics.

So Pakistan vs Afghanistan on Thursday for the 3rd spot playoff.

We lost to them twice in the Asia Cup and once here so it'd be nice to bring that trend to an end...

Man just thinking about the margin of defeat in a final gives me goosebumps. 158 runs is a massacre in a normal match, it becomes ten-fold in a final. Much more accomplished teams than Pakistan haven't done that to anyone over the years. Even then we have a clown on PP who thinks that was a fluke. Unbelievable.

The growth stops at 19-21 years. If these kids are seriously 19 there is a possibility that they can grow taller.

Looks as if, other than the fans of course, people upstairs did not care if our guys were put through some conditioning and training !!!! Losing a match is one thing, but getting totally blown away is totally shameful !! What will happen next time ??? Will there be few new Coaches ??? New Players ??? The Indians are very well organised for such events .... they have lots of money and players to pick from. In the past though, we Have Won .... so no despair .... really.

Cheers and Peace!

That's more applicable to CT final. Both Indian teams are comfortably better their Pak counterparts
