The men's international cricket circus doesn't often roll into Ranchi. With India boasting 54 grounds that have seen action at that level, it isn't difficult to understand why the city has hosted only two Tests, five ODIs and three T20Is since making its debut in January 2013.

So Sunday's second ODI is a bigger deal there than it might have been in other cities. Or perhaps not. The good cricket people of Ranchi - as represented by the press - are, it seems, more interested in other matters. "Are you missing Dhoni?" Keshav Maharaj was asked at a press conference on Saturday (October 8). Maharaj is among the most polite players anywhere in world sport, so he didn't snap: "Dhoni who?"

He also didn't point out that his Test career started almost two years after MS Dhoni played his last match in the format. Neither did Maharaj say he had featured in only four ODIs and no T20Is when Dhoni called time on a career that comprised 538 matches for India.

The good people of Ranchi, cricketminded and not, do have reason to miss Dhoni. But that didn't mean a left-arm spinner from the other side of the world should care a hoot that the undisputed favourite son of the "City of Waterfalls" no longer graced the international stage.

Maharaj has too many manners to say anything of that sort. Instead he said: "I never got the opportunity to play against him but I would love to have a chat to him. He has been a world-class performer, especially from a leadership point of view. There's a lot of things people can learn from him; just his calmness on the field."

There was more insular navel-gazing where that came from, as evidenced in an exchange with a reporter that began with: "Since your name is Keshav Maharaj, why are you not giving your replies in Hindi?" Maharaj would have been within his rights to say his country already has 11 official languages. But he gave a shy laugh, and said, "I wish I could reply in Hindi ..." He was interrupted by the same reporter with: "But your name is Keshav Maharaj." Maharaj took a breath before resuming his answer: "Yes, sir, I know my name is Keshav Maharaj, but I'm too far down the family tree to speak Hindi."

The South African's immaculate diplomacy was given another workout when he was asked what he thought of the home side's slow bowlers. "The Indian spinners are world class," he said. "They get exposed to the best batters in the world and you can see their skill levels. I am still learning my trade when it comes to spin bowling and I think I can take a leaf out of most of the Indian spinners' books." Maharaj is four months away from his 33rd birthday. He made his international debut almost six years ago, and has played 45 Tests, 25 ODIs and 21 T20Is, along with 148 first-class matches. If Maharaj is "still learning" Dhoni still wears his hair long.

Maharaj seemed more bemused than amused by the stranger questions he fielded. If nothing else, they served as a distraction from the more pressing business of South Africa needing to put in a more convincing performance, particularly with the ball, than they did in Lucknow on Thursday. They won, by nine runs, but almost came unstuck against a side depleted by the absence of all except the reserves in India's T20 World Cup squad.

A shaky victory would be excused if South Africa didn't need to keep winning to qualify directly for next year's ODI World Cup in India. They are currently in 11th place in the Super League standings with only seven matches left to play, and if they finish outside the top eight they will have to earn their spot in the qualifier in Zimbabwe. The pressure is properly on not only to win the rubber but to claim every point on offer.

Even though the series is as close to irrelevant as international cricket can get in India, the home side will rue having come so close in Lucknow only to fall short. Mohammad Siraj was all but unplayable with the seaming new ball, and Sanju Samson's career-best 86 not out, and the partnerships of 67 and 93 he shared with Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur, kept the Indians in the game long after they should have started going through the motions of defeat.

If a similar scenario unfolds in Ranchi on Sunday, might Samson give the city's good people a reason to stop missing Dhoni? No, but it would be good to see him try.

South Africa have won the toss and have opted to bat

Every team in the world is preparing for upcoming T20 world cup but India already started preparing for 2023 ODI world cup it seems

Avesh has a bowling average of over 50 in List A cricket. Why is India playing him in international cricket?

That is a big mystery...awful bowler. Also, and I don't want to derail but it breaks the notion that India is not welcoming to its minorities. Show me another cricket nation who gives a rope as long as India gave to Avesh Khan?

Next time when twitter propaganda happens, hope people remembers this that India never distinguish between its players due to their faith - be it Shami or Arshdeep or Avesh. Whether they are deserving to be in the playing XI or not, that is a different story.

Good progress by SA

When we have Shuuuper Staarr aka to be ATG in the future, like Avesh Khan playing, why do we even need to ever give Umran Malik a chance ever again ?

IMO Umran Malik should try out for the Pak team...

In T20 we have Shuuper Fast Trunder Arshadeep Singh

in ODI's we have to be ATG Avesh Khan

Finest exhibition of death bowling by india today. What a contrast. Siraj, Sundar, Kuldeep, Thakur all 4 did very well.

Umran and one more good bowler Kuldeep are bowling to Indian superstar batters in nets in Australia while Avesh keeps earning caps.

South Africa can defend this. They have a good bowling attack.

Should be a good 2nd innings.

Dhawan has become an ultra selfish cricketer in the last year or so. Strike rate dipped to low 70s. Purposely occupying the crease without really doing anything. He should retire not captain the side.

Yeah. He has declined quite a lot.

Age is catching up perhaps.

Dhawan should pick a day and announce his retirement. India certainly doesn't want a 37 year old opening in the next world cup.

Dhawan has been such an embarrassment for such a long period of time. Don't know when we'll get rid of him!

He is done clearly. Some of the knocks that he has played recently have been against either Zimbabwe or Windies and that too at low strike rate.

At peak, he may have been averaging 50 at 90 strike rate.

But the current version is at best a 37-38 averaging batsman who can keep up a strike rate of around 81-82 only.

He knows that he is opening for us in next year's ODI WC. That's why he said before this series started that this series will be good practice for him for next year's WC.

England has such a dynamic opening pair in ODIs and we are stuck with this laggard for so long now.

No wonder, they are World Champs.

Also the reason why he is consuming too many balls leaving very little for others.

Meanwhile flawed talent Gill is putting on a show. Always good to watch when on song.

We need to go with :-

Rohit
Gill
Kohli
Pant
KLR
Pandya
Jadeja

Backup - S Iyer, Samson

I think our batting is pedestrian in all formats of the game. Kohli and Rohit are way past it in all formats.

India need 226 runs

RR is fine - just wickets an issue

Rabada has 134 ODI wickets and 257 Test wickets at the age of 27.

Remarkable.

Dhawan needs to go. He is not even quarter of the player he was 3-4 years ago. Him opening with another over the hill player Rohit in next year's World Cup is going to be disastrous..

It will be disheartening as a cricket fan if a bowler of KG Rabada pedigree doesn't get to participate in 2023 World Cup.

Absolute shame for the game of cricket.

Run scoring will get harder and harder as the match goes on. Whatever they can score they should score upfront.

Astute captaincy by Maharaj.

He used the spinner on Dhawan and Gill and now bringing in his fast bowlers, Rabada and now Nortje to Iyer and Kishan with India two down cheaply.

Yup.

Maharaj has been great.

Ishan has been so slow. Don't think he is cut out for this level of bowling.

Worst case scenario they won't have direct qualification. They will have to play qualifying rounds. Who would want to do that amidst hectic schedules.
Yeah, that would be a headache! How did they get to this situation despite having a great bowling attack and just recently whitewashed India?

Ishan Kishan was never suited to ODI cricket. Play someone else at 3.

Brilliant fielding by Rabad, saved e runs there.

Sundar should come in next and not Samson. He is a better accumulator with not much of a stroke play.

Ishan is a failure even in IPL, at least this season. On what basis is he being played in any form of international cricket is beyond me!

Better from Ishan.

2 6s off last Maharaj over.

Iyer playing too many dots, hardly any singles.

Simply sensational batting by Ishan. Hope Dhawan learns something from this kid now that it's certain that he is going to be part of our ODI XI till ODI WC at least.

Dhawan can never attack the bowlers like Kishan can after getting set. He is eyeing for a maiden ton now. Brute knock.

Ishan dropped by Rabada off his own bowling.

Samson, Kishan, KS Bharath and many other talented WK Batsmen in India have been sidelined to accommodate the good-for-nothing Pant in LOIs. I feel bad for them.

Atleast I am not a hypocrite or betrayer like you, FYI! Calling spade a spade. :inti

Then why are you calling it a brutal knock now? Call it a stat padding knock too. Be consistent and don't be a hypocrite. :ab :inti
