Still reeling from the 3-0 loss against Bangladesh at home, West Indies do not have too much time to ponder as they welcome India for a three-match ODI series.
The change in captaincy has not brought about a change in fortunes for West Indies, with the newly-appointed skipper Nicholas Pooran struggling for form both as a batter and captain. Since taking over the reins from Keiron Pollard in May, the wicketkeeper-batter has only three wins to show from nine ODIs, all of which came against the Netherlands.
In the most recent series, West Indies were at the receiving end of a whitewash at home at the hands of Bangladesh. While West Indies will look for an all-round improvement, it is their batting that will need to remediate – in the three games against the Tigers, they failed to surpass the 180-run mark.
With the series not falling under the banner of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, West Indies have an opportunity to play without the pressure of the standings, which could bring the best out of the young team.
India, on the other hand, have been in incredible form – beating reigning World Champions England 2-1 in the recently concluded ODI series. Though they have opted to rest several key players, including captain Rohit Sharma, many of the squad that played against England have travelled to the Caribbean Islands for the ODI series.
In Rohit's absence, Shikhar Dhawan is set to lead the young Indian side eager to make an impression in the run-up to the T20 World Cup and in the long-term, the 50-over World Cup next year.
Remember the last time:
The last time India toured West Indies for an ODI series, the Men in Blue emerged 2-0 victors, with one match washed out due to rain.
Virat Kohli, who is yet another big name missing the series this time around, bagged tons in both the games as India convincingly beat the Windies in the second and third ODI in Port of Spain.
What they said:
Phil Simmons (West Indies head coach): "The main thing is how we bat our 50 overs…we have to bat 50 overs and put our innings together and partnerships together. Somebody has to be looking to score a hundred and hold the team together. Batting-wise that is it."
Squads:
West Indies: Nicholas Pooran (captain), Shamarh Brooks, Brandon King, Rovman Powell, Keacy Carty, Kyle Mayers, Jason Holder, Gudakesh Motie, Keemo Paul, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales.
India: Shikhar Dhawan (captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh.
