Still reeling from the 3-0 loss against Bangladesh at home, West Indies do not have too much time to ponder as they welcome India for a three-match ODI series.

The change in captaincy has not brought about a change in fortunes for West Indies, with the newly-appointed skipper Nicholas Pooran struggling for form both as a batter and captain. Since taking over the reins from Keiron Pollard in May, the wicketkeeper-batter has only three wins to show from nine ODIs, all of which came against the Netherlands.

In the most recent series, West Indies were at the receiving end of a whitewash at home at the hands of Bangladesh. While West Indies will look for an all-round improvement, it is their batting that will need to remediate – in the three games against the Tigers, they failed to surpass the 180-run mark.

With the series not falling under the banner of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, West Indies have an opportunity to play without the pressure of the standings, which could bring the best out of the young team.

India, on the other hand, have been in incredible form – beating reigning World Champions England 2-1 in the recently concluded ODI series. Though they have opted to rest several key players, including captain Rohit Sharma, many of the squad that played against England have travelled to the Caribbean Islands for the ODI series.

In Rohit's absence, Shikhar Dhawan is set to lead the young Indian side eager to make an impression in the run-up to the T20 World Cup and in the long-term, the 50-over World Cup next year.

Remember the last time:

The last time India toured West Indies for an ODI series, the Men in Blue emerged 2-0 victors, with one match washed out due to rain.

Virat Kohli, who is yet another big name missing the series this time around, bagged tons in both the games as India convincingly beat the Windies in the second and third ODI in Port of Spain.

What they said:

Phil Simmons (West Indies head coach): "The main thing is how we bat our 50 overs…we have to bat 50 overs and put our innings together and partnerships together. Somebody has to be looking to score a hundred and hold the team together. Batting-wise that is it."

Squads:

West Indies: Nicholas Pooran (captain), Shamarh Brooks, Brandon King, Rovman Powell, Keacy Carty, Kyle Mayers, Jason Holder, Gudakesh Motie, Keemo Paul, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales.

India: Shikhar Dhawan (captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh.

Ahead of the first ODI against West Indies on Friday, India captain Shikhar Dhawan provided a big update on the fitness of Ravindra Jadeja, saying the all-rounder has a bit of a niggle right now and he does not know whether he will be fit to take the field in the first game. For the three-match ODIs, several regulars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested.

"Right now, he has a bit of a niggle so we don't know whether he will be ready or not for the first ODI. Other than that, Siraj is there, Prasidh is there, and we have got amazing fast bowling. In spin, Axar Patel is there and Yuzvendra Chahal is there, we have a good bunch of bowling unit so it will be very impactful," said Dhawan during a pre-match press conference.

When asked whether he is excited to lead the side, Dhawan said: "I am quite excited to lead the side, whenever you get an opportunity to lead the youngsters, I share my experiences with them, I always love to share my experiences and bring impact in their games. Everyone has the skill, but it is also about the mental aspect and hence I share my experiences."

"We were not able to train because of rain but everyone is excited. There are youngsters in the team and they have done well in the UK, so not training here will not impact them much. It is a quite balanced side, we have both experience and youth. Suryakumar Yadav for example is very experienced, he is young in terms of international cricket, but the kind of maturity he has, Shreyas and Shardul are also playing for a long time," he added.

Earlier this week, Shikhar Dhawan shared a funny reel on Instagram, in which several members of the side followed the 'Hey trend'. The biggest surprise was head coach Rahul Dravid's cameo.

"I have a very good relationship with Rahul Dravid bhai, we went to the Sri Lanka tour together last year and from there, we formed a very good bond. We have an understanding, I feel my energy brings people together, and there is a light-hearted mood. Recently, I made an Instagram Reel and Rahul bhai featured in that. In today's world, there are reels and all, earlier it used to be team dinners," said Dhawan.

When asked whether he pays attention to the people who criticise him over form, the left-handed batter said: "Everyone has their own opinion, I know what I need to do and what I do not need to. I don't pay attention to what is being said. I have grown habitual of hearing what people have to say. 1-2 games can go sideways, I do not get tensed after that. International cricket comes with its pressure, but the pressure isn't that much, that it changes my personality or my playing style. I have a lot of self-belief in myself and our team will step onto the field with confidence."

Quickish start for India

IND 14/0 (1.5) CRR: 7.64

I fear for the Windies.

Dhawan knows a hundred is there for taking. Gill on other hand will get our trying to over-attack.

Shubman Gill wasn't sprinting to complete the single and Nicholas Pooran fires in a direct hit to find him short; India 120 for 1 in 18 overs

None of the big names yet on track to post 320+
India's bench strength is too good

Quality of international cricket going down day by day. In 90s, even Kenya's bowling attack was better than this West Indies team. No wonder people are more into leagues these days as international cricket is in dire situation unless Big teams is playing with each other.

Iyer has technical deficiencies but is good in building the innings. Decent ODI player.

SKY is more inventive and exciting to watch.

SKY is rated highly by pretty much everyone barring a couple of Pakistani posters for some very obvious reasons. He is a master in manipulating field.

Wat obvious reasons? The guy played a horrible shot in WC match against Pak. Like he always does

Subhman Gill is India's 2nd best all format batsman after KL Rahul. In my opinion, he should be in the team across formats.

India messed this up

IND 254/5 (43) CRR: 5.91

Samson is simply not international standard. It was an insult to Pant to get compared by Samson from some folks. There is a difference of galaxies between them.

Rohit
Gill
Kishan(wkt)
Shreyas
SKY
Hooda
Shardul
Axar

That should have been the team. Both Ruturaj and Kishan are better options than Samson in ODIs.

India 308/7 (50 ov)

West Indies are doing well so far. India needs to get its act together.

Perfect this from Windies.

Set up to chase down this target.

West Indies need 115 runs in 84 balls now

Pooran's wicket a setback but all not lost for the Windies.

Hanging in there Windies.

Tough but not impossible.

Not quite enough from West Indies.

India scrape home by 3 runs.

Thank god we won. It was still an embarrassing performance though

Still don’t understand why Kohli isn’t playing. He needs to play low stake matches against weaker teams. Is he playing domestic cricket?

He has become a complete prima donna, missing matches at his whims and fancies. And that has coincided with him being totally miserable.

And BCCI has been totally spineless in letting him do this as and when he wishes. First they erred in letting him continue leading us in all formats for far too longer than was desired and now he is being allowed to continue playing whenever he is in mood to play.

There is no other way Kohli can get back to form (if he can) than playing at least in these kind of matches! Really embarrassing to see this... His career will be over soon!

Don't understand why India keep mixing formats.

Samson has no place in ODI cricket. His LIst A record is pretty poor to even get a chance. At best should play only T20Is.

Ishan and Hooda are simply better than him. Iyer and SKY were anyways ahead. Now Gill is also ahead.

Gill
Dhawan
Kishan
Shreyas
SKY
D Hooda

That's a perfect top 6.

We have wasted so many years of Gill just because we can't get rid of Dhawan.

And Kohli playing FC cricket? Don't make me laugh.

Shikhar Dhawan led from the front at the bat, while the India bowlers held their nerve to win the first ODI in Port of Spain.

Strong start from Dhawan, Gill

Shubman Gill was in the playing XI in ODIs for the first time since December 2020. Playing with a point to prove, Gill showed tremendous class as he creamed the West Indies pacers for boundaries inside the Powerplay. He raced to 41 off 28 in the first 10 overs and brought up his maiden ODI fifty soon off just 36 balls.

At the other end, Shikhar Dhawan was happy to play second fiddle but kept scoring at a healthy rate as the pair brought up their 100-run partnership in just 14 overs. The skipper too managed to get to his half-century, his 36th in ODI cricket.

With both the batters on song, it needed something special to break the partnership and Nicholas Pooran produced a brilliant direct-hit to dismiss Gill for 64.

Heartbreak for Dhawan

West Indies managed to slip in a few quiet overs but the pairing of Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer batted steadily to ensure the hosts didn't make any more inroads. Iyer was peppered with a few short balls but picked the spinners apart.

Dhawan looked destined for his 18th career ODI hundred but a brilliant catch by Shamarh Brooks brought his end to the innings just three runs short of a century. Iyer (54) too fell soon after his fifty.

West Indies fight back

With 14 overs to go, India were in complete control at 231/3 and looked on course to posting a mammoth total. But the West Indies bowlers fought back brilliantly to keep pegging at the wickets and pushing the visitors back.

Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel made valuable contributions to take India past 300, finishing at 308/7.

Kyle Mayers and the top order set up the chase

Despite losing Shai Hope early in the innings, the West Indies chase was off to a great start thanks to a 117-run second-wicket partnership between Kyle Mayers (75) and Shamarh Brooks (46) who set the platform for their teammates.

Brandon King (54) anchored the chase well, bringing up his third ODI fifty while constantly losing partners at the other end.

India bowlers hold their nerve to get the win

West Indies needed only 120 runs in the last 15 overs with seven wickets left in the bag. They were looking at a historic run chase but the Indian bowlers had other plans.

First Mohammed Siraj dismissed the dangerous Nicholas Pooran (25) and Rovman Powell (6) soon followed his captain back to the pavilion as Yuzvendra Chahal bagged the first of his two wickets.

Akeal Hosein (32) and Romario Shepherd (39) put a late blitz bringing their side within 38 runs off the target with the last three overs to go. Despite the late onslaught, the India pacers weathered the storm with Siraj successfully defending 15 runs in the final over.

Following his side's thrilling three-run win over West Indies in the first ODI, Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan expressed disappointment of not being able to score a centuries. Brilliant half-centuries from Kyle Mayers and Brandon King went in vain as West Indies succumbed to a painful three-run defeat to India in the first ODI of three-match series here at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad on Friday. Dhawan scored a brilliant knock of 97 in the match, which also earned him the 'Man of the Match' award.

"Disappointed not to get the 100 but it was a good effort by the team. We got a good score in the end. There were nerves in the end and did not expect it to turn that way. We kept our cool and one small change in the end where we pushed the fine leg back and that really helped us. The discussion was to use the bigger side as much as we can and we want to keep on learning and make ourselves better for the rest of the competition," said Dhawan in a post-match presentation.

With this victory, India has a 1-0 lead in the series. Fans were treated to a thrilling game of cricket.

India posted a massive 308/7 in their first innings. Half-centuries from captain Shikhar Dhawan (97), Shubman Gill (64) and Shreyas Iyer (54) were extremely instrumental in taking the Men in Blue to a huge score. Gudakesh Motie was the pick of the bowlers with 2/54 in ten overs.

In chase of 309, half-centuries from Kyle Mayers (75) and Brandon King (54) helped Windies stay alive in the game. In the end, Akeal Hosein (32*) and Romario Shepherd (39*) almost took their side across the finishing line, but Indian bowlers held their nerves to seal a thrilling three-run win. Mohammed Siraj was the best bowler for India, with 2/57 in ten overs. He held his composure and did not allow the Windies to reach the target when they were just 15 runs away from it in the final over.

India and West Indies will square off in the second ODI on Sunday.
