Could we have a dramatic nailbiter in the offing?

A quick collapse by Australia, India then take the bull by the horns and win the game?

Is an Australia win out of the question?

More important than this draw is the rain in Christchurch. It will ensure India are in WTC finals.
Great achievement if that happens.

AUS 480 & 13/0 (9.3)
IND 571

Day 5: 1st Session - Australia trail by 78 runs

There is turn from the rough 2 feet outside off stump. But when the ball pitches in-line, there is slow to no turn.

This should be a draw unless Australia decides to hand the match to India.

Not much crowds in stadium. very quiet not much noise.
Give a good perspective of the Shri Narendra Modi stadium, what a wonderful spectacle.
Better sight at night with the 'ring of fire' - thats spectacular.
as no crowd noise - can pick up chit chat around the wicket, think just heard Bharat in tamil slang tell ash 'jal pokkam vehum varum' or similar loosely translated - 'it will come like a flood' :)

yes.
If India concedes a 2-2 or 2-1 finish to Australia, it can finish with a maximum of 127 points and a PCT of 58.79 (draw in the last match). In such a scenario, Sri Lanka can pip India and join Australia in the final if it beats New Zealand 2-0 and finish with a 61.11 PCT.

Thanks M8. Match at hagley oval hotting up with NZ needing 117 in about 17 ov, this is ODI stuff and if NZ go for it, will be xciting.

India is not attacking enough, batsmen should be surrounded with close-in fielders.. runs didn't matter here, wicket is.. India is not gonna lose this unless there's a horrible collapse.. poor captaincy from Rohit..

Looks like its an Australia vs India final for the 2021 - 2023 World Test Championship!

Hope 'neutrals' are happy with this pitch.

It's very difficult to prepare a balanced wicket that favours India. Which is why we produce those unplayable pitches and hope to outskill opponents . It's not like it's it's to consistently win on those pitches either.

Horrible, boring pitch. These are the types of pitches that kill test cricket

Vast majority of Indians have absolutely zero interest in pitches like this. Shameful

Yeah, pitch preparation is not an exact science which is why you can't replicate one kind of pitch to anywhere else. There are so many factors at play in preparing a pitch, soil quality & type, atmospheric conditions, technical know how of curators etc.

India deserve to get destroyed at the Oval for their ridiculous pitch tampering. This is the same track that gifted Axar two ten-fers in a row a few months back. Now, it's magically become a road after India lost the third test.

Regardless, it was a good series and Usman Khawaja beasting it throughout was great to watch.

We can still get interesting/balanced pitches in Eden Gardens & Chennai (Last two test matches played at Chennai had result with England & India each winning 1 each, though toss played a slight factor! But teams applying themselves completely can always win matches on these pitches regardless of toss).

I have been repeating saying that if we restrict number of test venues in India we can come up with balanced pitches (not too flat, not too spin)

Part of the blame should also go to Australian media who cried at these pitches! Even they don't deserve to win WTC.

No, most of the blame goes to India and I'm not being biased here. Turning pitches are fine but this sort of tampering on a match to match basis is cringeworthy.

They can clearly create any sort of pitch they want in so why not use that talent to elevate the game and make it interesting? Yes, they want to win but what does it say about them if they are afraid to face Australia on a turning pitch?

So, India will go up to 120 points in the rankings. Even this declining Indian team without Pant or Bumrah will have more points than any other Asian side in history.

Shows how overrated Asian Test cricket was until India started consistently doing well around 2007 onwards .

A wicketkeeper who can't bat is straight away assumed to be great behind the stumps.
Sriker Bharat fails on both counts.

It will be better to have KL Rahul as a keeper bat instead of Bharat.
Will definitely score more in the middle order.

Pujara & Gill bowling in tandem. Means the end of this test is nigh!

If KL Rahul keeps wicket in tests, then he will permanently lose whatever little batting skill left out in him! People were busy criticizing Pant's wicket-keeping (in his early days till lately) and even his consistency in batting. Expected a heck lot out of him (though he was young and shaping up). Now I guess they understand his value!

So when should they have laid flat pitch then? If they did it for 3rd test, then people would have accused saying that team is already 2-0 up, so they wanted to play safe (same would have happened even if it were for 2nd test). Probably they should have done it for 1st test and moved to spin pitches for all the remaining matches! Again the criticism would be same (but in different tone). Then people would have said India wants to desperately win series (get results in matches) and hence went for turning pitches again!

Hence I think they went for flat pitch for last match - yes I agree partly to make sure of series win, but also to avoid "poor" rating of pitch from ICC & Australian media! I think technically/politically BCCI took the best decisions about pitches for their own sake & for others!

The only other option was making totally flat pitches for all the matches! But this would also lead to loss of interest in test cricket among India fans and also reduction of number of matches in the series (We have 4 or 5 match series between India & Aus/Eng - one reason is because of the market in these 3 countries + the kind of pitches we are playing now - result oriented. This is true even when we tour them, and we have never complained about pitches unlike them!)

Draw in Ahmedabad Test gives India 16th successive series win at home

The last day of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 saw India win the series 2-1 after Australia batters held out for a draw at Ahmedabad.

The final day of the fourth Test of the series began with the tourists 88 runs behind the India total. Rohit Sharma tossed the ball to his trusted bowlers, Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammad Shami.

And soon enough, Ashwin provided a breakthrough by trapping the makeshift opener Matthew Kuhnemann lbw. This however proved to be a false dawn, as Travis Head (90) and Marnus Labuschagne (63*) ensured that the India attack laboured on a true batting surface.

The duo pretty much ended chances of an India victory by batting out almost 50 overs, before Head fell to a beauty from Axar Patel.

This was Patel’s 50th Test wicket. He became the fastest Indian player to reach the landmark (in terms of balls bowled).

Post-tea, a draw seemed to be the only result possible. With the game meandering nowhere, the sides shook hands in the 79th over of Australia's innings.

Virat Kohli won the Player of the Match award for his stunning 186 at Ahmedabad. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were the joint-winners of the Player of the Series award. Both made crucial all-round contributions: Ashwin picked 25 wickets and scored 86 runs, while Jadeja picked 22 wickets and scored 135 runs.

With this draw, India took the series 2-1. This is India’s fourth successive Test series win over Australia.

Overall, India have won 10 out of 16 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

They have now won their last 16 Test series at home.

India qualify for the WTC final

As India and Australia walked out to play the second session, New Zealand’s thrilling two-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Christchurch had ensured that the two sides would feature in the ICC World Test Championship final to be played from 7 June.

After this result, Sri Lanka will finish below India in the WTC standings, irrespective of the result in the second Test at Wellington.

16 consecutive wins at home… fantastic. Arguably the best test team currently. Not as dominant as peak SA, Aus or WI when it comes to home and away, but still #1 in this day and age.

Last time Aussies toured India, it was also 2-1 to India.

Aussies did well overall. They should've won the 2nd Test; that was decisive.
