India and New Zealand confirmed as finalist for the World Test Championship 2019-2021 [Post#552]

Shastri on ICC altering WTC points system: 'Please don't shift the goal post'

A day after India set up a World Test Championship final clash with New Zealand, India head coach Ravi Shastri has criticised the International Cricket Council’s (ICC’s) decision to make qualification for WTC final a percentage-based system.

“I cannot say how proud I am of my Indian cricket team going through this tough period and qualifying for the WTC final against all odds,” Shastri said a day after India's thumping 3-1 series win. “When you go from No. 1 to No. 3 sitting in your bedroom not playing cricket, and then you qualify with No. 1 in every department - top of the table, ICC rankings, percentage rankings... tomorrow there might be some other workings that come, I think we'll be No.1 in that also.”

Travel restrictions imposed by the pandemic meant many series had to be cancelled. As a result, the ICC last October announced that instead of cumulative points, the top two teams based on percentage points will qualify for the final.

“Please don’t shift the goalposts,” Shastri said. “We’re sitting on top of the table with 360 points. In the percentage system, you’ve to go to Australia and beat Australia. If you don’t beat Australia, you come back home and beat England 4-0, you get to 500 points, you still don't qualify.

“We have had to dig deep. We've had to go down every hole to find water. We found it and earned our stripes to be in the final of the WTC - the biggest trophy in the world - with 520 points. So don’t ask me about the next cycle, first address this cycle.”

Former Pakistan captain Rameez Raja has urged arch-rivals India and Pakistan to play one another in the next cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. In the ongoing World Test championship, the two Asian giants didn’t face each other due to tension between the two sides.

In fact, the last time India and Pakistan played Tests was in 2007 and the bilateral series came in 2012-13. India and Pakistan play each other in ICC events and the world cricket body has made sure that these two teams face off on another given the terrific TRP and revenue this clash generates.
It Made No Sense Not Having India And Pakistan Series, Says Rameez Raja

The 58-year-old former cricketer considers that there should be a separate window for WTC in order to entice more sponsorship for the longest format of the game. He also said that without India and Pakistan playing each other, the World Test Championship made no sense.

“The current format was lopsided and prolonged and it made no sense not having India and Pakistan series. Teams didn’t play the same number of matches and even the points system was weird. There should have been a 3-month window and everyone should have played against each other,” said Ramiz said

“Next time when the WTC is held no cricket should be held at that time, if you want to promote Test cricket and infuse life into it and also attract sponsors to this format. Sponsorship will only come when you will not give sponsors any other option to park their money,” he added.

The current ICC World Test Championship saw Pakistan ending up in the fifth place in the points table with 43.3% points, having 4 Tests, losing 5, and drawing 3. The final of the tournament will be played between no.1 on the WTC table, India, and no. 2 spot holders New Zealand.

The final will be played at the Rose Bowl in Southampton from June 18-22 with 23 being a rest day. India defeated England 3-1 and Australia 2-1 in the recent Test series to qualify for the ICC WTC final, while New Zealand reached the final without playing a single Test outside their country, given that the Championship was marred by the COVID-19 pandemic.

WTC Final: ICC offers the global media rights of WTC finals, Star to broadcast in the Indian subcontinent: The watch-dog of international cricket, International Cricket Council (ICC) has offered to sell the media/broadcasting rights of the World Test Championship Finals scheduled to take place from June 18-22 between India and New Zealand in Southampton, UK. Although Star India is ICC’s official media rights partner, the Indian broadcaster has curtailed its role to the Indian subcontinent only due to monetary benefits.

The decision from Star India comes in light of a stated clause in its agreement with ICC, owing to which Star India will program the WTC Final in the Indian sub-continent only, which arguably has the most ravenous appetite for the game of cricket.

“It made sense for Star not to worry about selling the rights of the one-off match in none-too major cricket markets where their team is not playing. Apart from India, Star will have the rights in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, the biggest markets in world cricket,” mentioned a person involved in the contract.

Star’s decision has thrown ICC in a predicament of selling the rights of the first-ever World Test Championship (WTC) Final-mainly England, Australia, and South Africa. The potential media buyers in these countries are- Channel Nine and Fox in Australia, Sky in the UK, and SuperSport and SABC in South Africa, which will be marked on ICC’s arrow. ICC will be keen to sell the rights for wider coverage of the game so that none of the cricket-watching nations is left out of the schemes.

But the monetary aspect of the game will possess a big stymie in front of ICC as selling the rights for only a single Test match in the age of T20 cricket, is in itself a huge challenge. Moreover, the broadcasters also have their own sets of problems. In a T20 match, where a 10-second slot for an advertisement for Rs 5 lakh, the cost in a Test for the 10 seconds slots plummets drastically to about Rs 50,000. With this keeping in mind, ICC has a task on its head before the WTC Finals.

The ICC is confident the inaugural World Test Championship final, to be contested between India and New Zealand in Southampton in June, will go ahead as planned.

The final of the marquee event will be played from 18-22 June at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

India is experiencing a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, prompting the United Kingdom, on Monday (April 19), to add India to its 'red list' and banning all arrivals from the country.

However, the ICC is confident of staging the event as planned. “We are currently discussing with the UK Government the impact of countries being on the ‘red list’,” an ICC spokesperson said.

“The ECB and other Members have demonstrated how we can stage international cricket safely in the middle of a pandemic, and we are confident that we can continue to do that and that the World Test Championship Final will go ahead as planned in June in the UK.”

India and New Zealand will go head-to-head in the final after finishing in the top two positions of the league table of the tournament.

Problem is that the Indian touring party (and NZ players at the IPL) will almost certainly now have to undergo 10 days quarantine in a government provided hotel with no access to training facilities or much/any opportunity for physical activity.

(Reuters) - New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said on Tuesday all of its home-based players heading to England for a two-match test series and the World Test Championship final have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The New Zealand government said last month it would allow athletes to jump the queue in the country’s vaccine rollout to allow them to participate in events of “national significance”.

The country has also started administering vaccinations to its athletes ahead of their departure for the July 23-Aug. 8 Tokyo Olympics.

The cricket team will travel to England for a two-test series starting on June 2 before facing India in the ICC World Test Championship final on June 18 at Southampton.

NZC posted a photo on Twitter of paceman Neil Wagner getting his injection on Tuesday.

“He’s the last of our New Zealand-based players to receive the first of two doses ahead of departure to England in May,” NZC tweeted.

Dan Christian revealed that Virat Kohli is trying to get some help from his teammate New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson before the India-New Zealand faceoff in the World Test Championship final, but has been unsuccessful so far.
:))

Originally Boult, Jamieson, Santner and Williamson were going to miss the First warm-up Test v England, and then both of them when mandatory quarantine was introduced for arrivals from India into the UK.

The suspension of the IPL should now mean that they can play both warm-up Tests.

ICC World Test Championship Final: Indian Team May Leave Early Due to UK Travel Restrictions

The BCCI may be asked by the UK government to send a list of players and support staff who would be travelling to the UK.

Taking the travel restrictions into account during the pandemic, the Virat Kohli-led Indian side is expected to prepone their travel to the UK for the ICC World Test Championship final versus New Zealand. The summit clash is scheduled to take place in Southampton starting June 18.

As per a report on Sports Tak, with the IPL suspended – the Indian players would leave for the UK as early as the last week of May, instead of the first week of June.

The same report claims that the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) is in talks with the UK government in this regard. In the wake of the Covid-19 surge, the UK government put India on a travel ‘red list’ – which means banning the entry of Indian nationals – from April 23.

It is believed that the BCCI may be asked to send a list of players and support staff who would be travelling to the UK.

Cannot wait for this. It is one of the most important and historic events in history of cricket.

The greatest Asian Test team of all time vs the greatest New Zealand Test team of all time to contest the inaugural WTC Final.

It is an event that will be remembered in history. The only shame is that it is not being held at Lord’s and of course there will be no crowd.

Expecting a great start to World Test Championship with an epic test final.

On paper, India is a better team but New Zealand pace bowling quartet may love the swing friendly conditions a bit more, especially when bowling against Indian batting that has failed to prove in these conditions.

None of our openers are renowned for dealing with swing and seam as they are against pace and bounce.

Exactly.

This is the most important cricket match since the 1977 Centenary Test.

Oh bhai..Please don't hype this match up.

NZ are a better team than India in English conditions and us Indian fans will be left to face the wrath of the Pakistani fans after India invariably get skittled for 200 by Boult, Jamieson & co:))

One good thing about the IPL getting suspended is that we didn't lose any Test players to injury in the IPL and we would field close to what would be a full strength team for the WTC and the tour of England. Another issue is that they would have more time to acclimatise before the event, I was afraid the team would turn up jaded and worn out after a long IPL tournament.

Hopefully a positive result in at least one of the two events, i.e, WTC final and the series against England would be great.

Exactly.

This is the most important cricket match since the 1977 Centenary Test.

Without a doubt. It is bigger than 2019 World Cup final for Kiwi fans and as big as GABBA 2021 test for Indian fans.

That Test series in England for NZ right before this final gives them a big acclimatisation advantage surely? Seems a little unfair.

IPL suspension does work in India's favour however, and after that performance in Australia, they would probably be favourites.

It won't beat the hype. I'd be extremely surprised if these live up to the expectations. GABBA 2021 was fuelled by the crazy sledging and very high intensity in the previous 2 matches plus there was always that rivalry there between Aus and Ind.
For Kiwi fans, it wouldn't be bigger but probably on par to the final of CWC 19. They need this victory seeing that they haven't had any major tournament win in ages/ever and they're still hurting from 2019's unlucky debacle.

I think it gives them a HUGE advantage. Boult, Jamieson will be rearing to go at the subcontinent batsmen in swinging conditions.

Jamieson for the man of the match <---heard it here first.

Although I really want to see Pant pull off a miracle. New favourite in the lineup.

India are favorites to win this final but they were also favorites for reaching the WC19 final but NZ bowlers had other ideas that day.
Should be the perfect opportunity for the Indians to get revenge & finally get their hand on the ICC trophy after a break of 8 years (which is a massive time for a team like India)

Playing XI should be:

Rohit
Gill
Pujara
Virat
Rahane
Pant
Jadeja/Sundar
Ashwin
Ishant
Siraj
Bumrah

Why do people think India would be favourites against New Zealand in the WTC final?

India would be favourites to win against New Zealand everywhere but two places - New Zealand and England. New Zealand seamers would feel right at home in conditions aiding swing and seam bowling. Probably the only thing that would help India is the fact that the match happens in Southampton, a venue that generally tends to be slightly on the drier side.

We are not favorites in England.

I doubt anyone thinks that India is going in as favourites. NZ should win this. Strongest fast bowling line up by far. The difference makers will be Pant and Pujara. Get these 2 and it's easy pickings

Nah, the kiwi fast bowlers are condition specific. But in English and NZ conditions, they certainly have a great bowling line up.

BOY! Am I glad that the IPL is over one way or another ? You bet!!

The other thing that makes me happy is that we have almost nil injuries (Rahul excepted) and the team has some decent hit/net practice under the belt albeit only at a white ball level.

Hope they reach England early, rest well, practice well and turn up fresh to give their best..good luck boys!

Team India shall prevail.

I can already picture Kohli lifting the title and further cementing his status as the GOAT Asian Test captain.

NZ winning. They've paid their dues.Too many heartbreaks and shortcomings. Finally an ICC trophy their way.
I will come back to this after Kohli and co. collapse yet again to the brilliance of Boult, Southee and Jamieson. Calling it right here.

Predictions
Gill out to Boult early
Rohit out to Jamieson on a low score
Kohli out to Jamieson on a low scor
Pujara remain not out and carry the bat
Rahane out to Southee low score
Pant out to Santner after a flourish
Tail cleaned up by Boult.

Just like they did in NZ last year where not a single batsman even crossed 50 😂
Kohli scores:
3, 14, 2, 17

Did none of you watch Pakistan's two Bubble Tests at Southampton last summer.

Yea, no great batsman has ever had a bad series in their career.

What if the match gets tied or drawn? How is the winner decided? Surely it's not gonna be based on who hit more boundaries I believe :))?

Good list
Why not Shami? I guess he is fit now-and I think he played in IPL games.

and I'd go Jads for Sundar - more experienced, definitely a superior fielder, better bowler...and in batting hes' not that much behind.
but the prob I have is our openers. Both are similar in a sense.
In Gill I see someone perfectly suited to hitting thru the line on true Aus and SAF pitches.
He is yet to be tested against quality spin bowling.
He grips the bat high on the handle and almost does not not have a front foot defensive technique or movement....but then neither did greats like Greg chappell, Zaheer Abbas , mohd azhar etc...
Am still not sold on Hitman as opener in tests....he is bit like the Chinese batteries - chala to chand tak nahi to sham tak...:)
I rate our chances against boult and co as very less - at least in the first innings...am happy to be proven wrong.
The cancellation of IPL is good ina sense-these guys will get some rest, less scope for injuries and hopefully will get to England quickly and accumatise.
NZ play two tests and will be battle hardened before the WTC final starts.
Hope our guys are up to it
GO INDIAAAA!

I believe the match is at Rosebowl Southampton.
If any surface assists reverse in Eng, its that place.
More reasons to have Shami in the starting XI.

India won't win. They are just not good enough to win in England. This is gonna be fun.

The game should be shifted to Delhi or Maldives. Cant risk the Indian variant floating around in the UK.

Would be embarassing if it's finished within 3 days.
Just like this whole test championship is nothing but farce without proper scheduling.
i want the likes of pujara and ishant to do well .
But honestly newzealand deserve it much more.

Enjoy the moment my friend. We don't know the next time we'll be lucky enough to see the BCCI's cash cow taking a backseat to actual international cricket.

Unfortunately India's going to win and this going be the continuation of a dark period in world cricket

KW will one day explode out of anger with all that pent up rage. I'm just waiting on that.

Why would that be?
India was leading the points table by a huge margin before the CV situation in early 2020.
The rules were changed in approx nov 2020. India still stuck on to their guns, and defeated all in front of them home and away, except foe the NZ away series.
Did NZ win away series against aus? eng?
If India was denied a place due to the rule change in Nov 2020 and were denied a place in finals, and complained, the internet servers would melt with the traffic calling us sore losers.
Now that India has reached the finals and deservedly so - why would NZ deserve it more?

It's probably better for the long-term future of the World Test Championship if India wins this match, so I'm rooting for them. The new ICC administration has been lukewarm about the idea of a test championship, and an Indian win will potentially reduce the risk of the event being removed from the calendar to make way for more useless white ball tournaments.

India’s Probable Squad For ICC World Test Championship Final vs New Zealand: Will Hardik Pandya, Prithvi Shaw, Prasidh Krishna Make Virat Kohli-Led Side?

WTC Final: So, what will be the Indian team, and more importantly - who would be the new faces?

With the IPL 2021 now suspended amid the Covid-19 crisis in India, the focus automatically shifts to the next big cricketing event – the inaugural ICC World Test Championship final. With the game set to take place in Southampton, England – both India and New Zealand – the finalists – would be mentally building up for the event in difficult times. The summit clash between the top two Test sides in the world will start on June 18. Also Read - Selectors to Take a Call on Hardik Pandya, Prithvi Shaw, Prasidh Krishna For WTC Final - Report

The BCCI is set to announce the Virat Kohli-led Indian team on Friday. As per reports, the selection panel is going to pick a jumbo squad for the event as the five-match Tests versus England follow next. With the UK travel restrictions making things tricky with each passing day, the BCCI opted not to take a risk and have hence decided to send a massive contingent. Reports had earlier stated that the side would leave in the first week of June – but that has been preponed due to the travel restrictions in some countries for Indians. Also Read - Sourav Ganguly Opens on IPL 2021 Resumption - We'll See if a Window Can be Available Before T20 World Cup

BCCI is in constant touch with their English counterpart to find a way to make things happen and get the permits from the UK government on time.

A secure bio-security bubble has to be created, the SOP’s will have to be in place for the marquee event.

So, what will be the Indian team, and more importantly – who would be the new faces?

It is expected that the selectors will pick four openers, about four to five middle-order batsmen, eight to nine pacers, four to five spinners, and two to three wicketkeepers. If a 25-member squad is selected, it is likely that Harshal Patel, who has been in top form in the seven IPL matches, could be rewarded with a maiden national cap.

Also, Prasidh Krishna – who has been picked in the limited-overs format – could get his maiden Test call. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Prithvi Shaw, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mayank Agarwal, and Ravindra Jadeja would be making a comeback in the side.

India’s Probable 25-Member Squad For WTC Final: Virat Kohli (C), Ajinkya Rahane (VC), Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant (WK), Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini, Prasidh Krishna, Umesh Yadav, Harshal Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur

Stuart Broad questions allocation of points in World Test Championship

London's seasoned pacer has questioned the points allocation system in the , wondering how a five-match can be worth the same as a two-game series between India and Bangladesh.
India and will lock horns in the final of the inaugural edition in Southampton's Ageas Bowl from June 18-22. The ICC mandates that same number of points be available from each series, irrespective of its length, so that countries that play fewer Tests are not affected adversely.

"The World Test Championship is a really good concept, I just don't think it's quite right yet. It's a first-time effort. I can't quite work out how a five-match Ashes series can be worth the same as India playing Bangladesh for two Tests," said while speaking to 'Press Association'.

Under the points system, match results and not series results are taken into account. In a five-match rubber, 20 per cent of the points are available each match, while in a two-match series, 50 per cent of the points are available every game.
The 34-year-old Broad, who has taken 517 wickets in 146 Tests to stand only behind among England's highest wicket-takers in the traditional format, said his country will always find it difficult to make it to the WTC final as per the current system.

"There's something in the idea and it has given great context to the game but there needs to be work done on how it all comes together, I think," Broad added. England played the most number of Tests (21) in the World Test Championship. India were second with 17 matches, while bottom-placed Bangladesh played just seven games.

"We had an opportunity, but the amount of cricket we play as an England side in the current system makes it very difficult to get into the final," Broad said.

India dashed both England and Australia's hopes of making the final of WTC with their back-to-back series triumphs against the two teams earlier this year. England finished fourth in the WTC standings, behind Ashes rivals Australia

Broad is right. It is harder for teams who play 4-5 matches in a series to get into finals.

India cricket team can do outstanding things: Hanuma Vihari

Batsman sure great things await India in England, with World Test Championship and beyond

New Zealand, Feb 14 (ANI): India’s Hanuma Vihari plays a shot during the 3-day practice Test match between India and New Zealand XI, at Seddon Park Hamilton on Friday. (ANI Photo)

Batsman Hanuma Vihari said that India are confident going into the World Test Championship despite the fact that they will be facing difficult opponents in the shape of New Zealand.

The match will be played at the Ageas Bowl from July 18 to 22.

“I am trying to prepare in the best way possible for the WTC Final and the England series. It’s going to be interesting and exciting as well for all the Indian fans because it’s the first edition of the WTC. We are in the finals and we are playing New Zealand, which is going to be challenging in these conditions, we all know that, but the Indian team can do outstanding things,” Vihari told India Today.

Vihari will be making a comeback to the Test squad after missing out in the England series due to injury. He picked up the injury during his epic knock in the third Test against Australia in January where he fended off 161 deliveries to remain unbeaten on 26 and lead India to a draw. It helped keep the series level at 1-1 and India ended up beating Australia in the fourth and final Test to clinch the rubber.

Vihari has since played seven matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Andhra where a knock of 65 was his only double-digit score. Later, he played three County games for Warwickshire, managing scores of 0, 8, 32, 52, 8 and 0.

“I am sure that we’ll be confident going into the WTC final. I am trying to prepare as best as I can for the WTC and the Test series after that,” Vihari said.

Now that India has reached the finals and deservedly so - why would NZ deserve it more?
They just beat India, and you have disappeared longer than a cat at a dog show. :inti

Didn't C U either after the SKY catch - but then U got June 2024
You didn't see me after the Sky catch? Then who were you replying to in this thread? :kp

How about this congratulation thread? :rabada2

Next time you lie about me. Make sure to do your research properly.

Wow, I'm honoured...
and cat dog whatever -i mentioned earlier - plz check both tests that india lost -i congratulated NZ whole heartedly for their fantastic victory...but you wont mention that ...becoz such indian defeats is your moment in the sun and also the upcoming BGT where our chances are very low.

I think it is that time again where my Indian friends are going to take a very long holiday, but the exciting thing is that the IPL is around the corner and they will return for that :yk3
Dont worry Shaz bro...i think you will find a lot of your indian friends are still here, a lot of us also love the game and a lot of us also congratualted on your series win vs eng...

There won't be another India New Zealand WTC Final this time.

Kiwis have put a huge dent on India's chances for another final.
