India and New Zealand confirmed as finalist for the World Test Championship 2019-2021 [Post#552]

Who will win the World Test Championship?

Seems like a race between the Big 3 as of now

Monty Panesar, England's greatest spinner since world war 2, reckons it will be Aussies.

India will definitely be in the final. It's just a question who will be there with them. South Africa, Australia, England, and New Zealand look to be the main contenders after that.

Would be shocked if Pakistan, WI, or Sri Lanka get into the top 2.

NZ and SL just have one win in Tests and above England and Australia!

Virat Kohli wants World Test Championships points doubled for away Test wins

Indian skipper Virat Kohli weighed in on the points system in the inaugural World Test Championships and shared his opinion on the points awarded for an away win.

Currently, India are sitting pretty with 160 points to their name on the points table. Kohli feels that the World Test Championship has helped in raising the standard of red-ball cricket.

“If you would have asked me to make the points table, I would give double the points for an away Test win. That is something I would definitely like to see may be after first edition,” Kohli replied when asked about the prevailing points system of the World Championship. The Indian skipper was addressing the media in the pre-match press conference in Pune on Wednesday.

According to the current points distribution, a team gets 120 points for a series sweep whether it’s a two-match, three-match or a five-match series.

The 30-year-old is also happy that teams are looking to win the matches rather than trying to play a draw.

“Look, the importance of every game has become that much more. In earlier situations, in a three-match series, you probably would have played out a draw, but teams are going to go for wins and get those extra points. So, I think it’s great for Test cricket,” he said.

Kohli also feels that the championship led to players being more professional and doing more in every session.

“The matches are going to be that much more exciting is what we all feel and already experienced that. We have to be professional in every session that we play.

“It will be much more demanding on the players now, which is a good thing as it will keep the standard of Test cricket high. These are the only things that we have experienced so far in terms of changes,” he said.

Kohli also lauded Rohit Sharma for his record-breaking twin centuries in the Vizag Test and feels it is “time to let Rohit Sharma enjoy his batting in red-ball cricket”.

Double the points for away wins: Kohli

Kohli in a press conference recently stated that teams should be awarded double points for away Test wins.

I think this is a brilliant idea. What does everyone think?

Good point from Kohli

40 more points in the bag.

The juggernaut rolls on

4 in 4 for India so far

:kohli

It'll be close between Nz, Aus and India for the top 3 spots. NZ avoids playing any SENA teams at home so will do pretty well, and they'll also get to play Bangladesh away..Aus will also play Bangladesh away and also SA(where they are usually competetive) and they already did well in England..SA and England are struggling too much to compete

India have strengthened their position in the ICC World Test Championship with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over South Africa in the three-match home series that ended today.
India gained the maximum of 120 points with each Test worth 40 points since points are evenly distributed over the number of matches in a series. The points range from 60 points for each match of a two-Test series to 24 for each match of a five-Test series.

India have continued from their early success of a 2-0 win in the West Indies and are now on 240 points after wresting the maximum of 120 points in both their series. They get a chance to build further in an upcoming two-Test home series against Bangladesh from 14 November.

Sri Lanka and New Zealand are on 60 points each in the points table after drawing their two-match series 1-1 while England and Australia are on 56 each after their five-match Ashes series ended 2-2.

The top two teams at the end of the league will play the final in the UK in June 2021 with the winners crowned the World Test Champions.

The format is flawed.

A 2-0 win against Afghanistan will give you 120 points but so would against the too teams.

How is that fair?

Answer your Bhaijaan?

Firstly Afg is not part of the competition. Secondly it's a risk and reward system, in 2 match series 2 wins in 2 leave you with 120 points sure but a win is never guaranteed. You could draw or lose then a smaller series means lot more points lost. Its risk and return, india risked it with 2 games vs WI, we won.

You could complain that both Aussies and England won as many games as India did before SA series but had less points but also remember that SL and NZ both have lost less games than both Aus and Eng and still it cost them more points than it did for the later 2.

It is the 1st edition. They will tinker the next one!

Believe me, only the best 2 teams will advance to the finals (unless it's Pakistan; that would be fluke, obviously :yk)

This format makes no sense I’m not saying this because India is winning. It’s simple test cricket at home and away is totally different. In India ashwin and jadeja will wreck havoc upon any touring side and in foreign territory they won’t even make it into the 15. Same with all the other oppositions Australia will get man handled by Yasir shah in uae and pat Cummins will bounce out Pakistan in Australia. The only way this championship makes sense is if it’s held at neutral venues for all oppositions. Otherwise the only main point of watching this would be the final in the UK if England are not a part of it. It will be a fair square final with no home advantage.

Thats a valid point all test matches should be held in neutral venues.

Thats a valid point all test matches should be held in neutral venues.

However valid it may sound but it’s not financially feasible. Most test nations outside Big 3 makes loss from hosting a test series at home, and asking them to host in neutral venue would possibly bring them on the verge of Bankruptcy.

ICC too can’t afford to finance every test match played in neutral venue as broadcaster don’t really pay too much for test series as they do for ICC LOI events.

economics and sporting sense not always go hand in hand.

Next cycle the home and away teams will switch for the most part so it evens out between cycles.

Teams get 3 series at home and 3 series away. It's not perfect because everyone doesn't play everyone home and away but that's probably never going to happen

India stays at #1 with 300 points

At #2 is NZ with 60 points :23:

This may sound far fetched but I think Pakistan will beat Australia 1-0
Let's see how well this ages

India stays at #1 with 300 points

India is playing its 3rd series while NZ has just played 1 series. Each consists of 120 points irrespective of the number of matches.

Its a three year cycle, a lot more matches including the away tours are gonna come in.

Replace with Pakistan or Bangladesh then and just imagine.

Test rankings dont influence the points in Test championship. If teams are gonna get less points by beating a lower ranked team than a lower ranked team will get more points beating a higher ranked team than there is more chance of a lower ranked team if it wins few series to get insane amount of points which wont be possible for a no 1 test side as every team is below them and they will only get standard points in each series.

India have already won one of the 3 away series (WI). Other 2 are NZ in feb and Aus later in Dec 2020.

But India have done well to win everything so far.

Home advantage is one thing, but India's domination is something to be proud about, especially since it hasn't come on the back of the usual spinning pitches and Ash-Jaddu running riot. Its been good cricket wickets, with Indian pacers just destroying the opposition.

And this performance (in home season 2019) is without Bumrah in this mix. Amazing

Bowling.jpg

Its too early to celebrate, India performance will be different at away for sure

india is pretty much in the final, they might lose a few tests away but they ain't getting whitewashed.

As usual there is a lot of criticism of this initiative. I think it is a great idea and will make test matches more meaningful. Whatever guidelines are put in place I am sure there will be some flaws. Maybe over time some changes will be made to improve the process. In the meantime I am sure that deserving teams will rise to the top. Credit goes to Kohli for coming up with the suggestion that away wins should count for more. Given that India are so strong at home this is not something that would benefit their team.

India are almost certain to make the Final as they're unbeatable at home and will take the full points there while taking odd wins away from home.

Aus probably similar, most likely a India vs Aus Final.

If india just don't screw it up completely we should be in the finals, but the other spot will be a close fight,

Aus are good at home but they aren't going to whitewash india or nz at home as good as they are. BD away isn't a walk in park when most of their batsmen can't play spin.

Eng have similar issues as away to india and SL will be difficult and Pak always put up their best fight against eng in eng.

You have India and Pak at home and i don't think it will 4-0, so you too aren't getting full points at home and your away tours are tough.

If anything i think Pak have a great chance if they can just take care of business at home given they aren't facing great opponents and put a fight in NZ and Eng.

India have consolidated their position at the top of the ICC World Test Championship, reaching 360 points after completing a 2-0 series victory over Bangladesh.

India have yet to drop a point in the nine-team championship. They won 2-0 in the West Indies and beat South Africa 3-0 in a home series before completing their third series win in the day-night Kolkata Test.

Each series is worth 120 points with the points distributed evenly over the number of matches in a series.

The points range from 60 points for each match of a two-Test series to 24 for each match of a five-Test series.

Australia are on 116 points after winning the first match of their ongoing Test series against Pakistan. Australia and England had earlier settled for 56 points each from their five-match Ashes series, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Sri Lanka and New Zealand are on 60 points each after drawing their two-match series 1-1. Pakistan are playing their first WTC series Down Under, while Bangladesh, West Indies and South Africa failed to get any points in their opening series.

The top two teams at the end of the league will play the final in the UK in June 2021 with the winners crowned the World Test Champions.

Only in the International Cricket Council's eyes could a single Test win over Pakistan at the Gabba be worth more than retaining the Ashes away from home.

Not that Australian captain Tim Paine is worried.

Australia picked up 60 World Test Championship points for Sunday's big win over Pakistan, in the newly-formed competition.

In comparison, they collected 56 points for drawing an Ashes series against England, albeit on foreign soil.

The explanation is not as confusing as it sounds.

Not every Test is equal, but every series is.

The ICC puts 120 points up for grabs in every series. Given Australia's contest with Pakistan is only over two Tests, each match is worth 60.

The Ashes meanwhile was a five-Test series, meaning a win in any of those was worth 24 points - or eight for a draw.

"I'm okay with it, the main thing is that now every Test match counts," Paine said.

"There's a few things, it's not perfect but I think the players are rapt there's a Test World Cup that's up for grabs. A final that's there to be played if you're good enough.

"I think over the years the points system will improve and the consistency of it ... There are some small tweaks that can be made."

Under the competition, the world's top-nine teams each play for points in six series over a two-year period. Three of those are at home and three away.

But there are other quirks too though.

Some series do not form part of the competition due to most teams playing more than six series in a two-year cycle. The current Tests between England and New Zealand are an example of that.

Regardless, the two top-ranked teams come the end of the tournament in February 2021 will face off in a final at Lord's from June 10-14.

And the Australians want to be there, having gone second on the ladder after the Gabba win.

"We're certainly tracking it," Paine said.

"Because one of our goals is to be there on June 14. It's certainly a date on the calendar we've put down as a group."

Then invite Pakistan to play 5 test series in Australia.

Then invite Pakistan to play 5 test series in Australia.

They're happy that they're getting 60 points because they know they'll easily get 120 points for playing a mere 2 matches compared to them getting only 50 odd for playing 5.

Add stats to the title as well. Too bad England/NZ series won't be counted. Watling would be in that list.

All Indian fast bowlers average in Teens or below in the Test championship

I can't even see my screenshot. Can someone share bowling/batting performances of ICC test championship in a readable format.

It is a travesty despite averaging 74. Vihari doesn't get a chance. Having said that Jaddu average 60 as well.

Australia have moved to a total of 176 points and are in second position in the ICC World Test Championship table after grabbing a full 120 points against Pakistan with a 2-0 series win.
Australia went into the two-Test series with 56 points carried over from their five-match series against England, which had ended in a 2-2 draw. The two comprehensive wins in Brisbane and Adelaide though have fortified their position in the nine-team championship.

Pakistan could not get any points in their opening series, but will get a chance to change that in home conditions against Sri Lanka when they play a two-Test series from 11 December in Rawalpindi and Karachi.

Each series of the WTC is worth 120 points, distributed evenly over the number of matches in a series. The points range from 60 points for each match of a two-Test series to 24 for each match of a five-Test series.

India are strongly placed at the top of the table with 360 points from three series – against the West Indies, South Africa and Bangladesh, who are all yet to get any points. Sri Lanka and New Zealand are on 60 points each after drawing their two-match series 1-1.

Looks like an India vs Australia final at Lords as of now.

IF Pakistan can come back from this and finish at 4th or 5th, that would be a big deal...add that a discovery and development of a series of players and the next cycle could be a lot better.

SA- Bangladesh were demolished by our pacers/ so the only reason you are saying, typing or whatever you are trying to convey. Doesn't make sense..

I see NZ making it over Australia. 6 of NZs top 7 are averaging over 40, their bowling has always been good.

India tour New Zealand will start on 24th Jan 2020 starting with 5 T20 then 3 ODIs and then two test matches.

Our Management know the importance of world t20 tournament and Test championship so they will make suitable strategies.

Worst case I feel India should draw the level series. Anyway we are mighty during new Zealand tour of India for two tests.

World Test Championship Points Table

IND - 360
AUS - 216
SL - 80
NZ - 60
ENG - 56
PAK - 20
WI - 0
SA - 0
BAN - 0

Pakistan needs to help its bowlers get 20 wickets in home tests by preparing bowling friendly pitches. Unless it does that, they will not win home tests. Can't have ridiculous pitches like Rawalpindi where there was no spin, no seam.

The only two test wins against India in Pakistan came under green pitches. You have to take that route against Asian sides. Can't think along the lines that our batting will crumble on seaming pitches.

Against non Asian sides, pitches need to be spinning cobras. Why Pakistan prepares batting paradises where balls go gun barrel straight is beyond me?

Pakistan catch up with Sri Lanka in points table

Pakistan have grabbed 60 points for their victory over Sri Lanka in the Karachi Test to move to 80 points in the ICC World Test Championship points table at the end of the two-match series.

Sri Lanka are also on 80 points, having reached the tally after the two teams drew the opening Test in Rawalpindi, which gained them 20 points each. Sri Lanka had gone into the Pakistan series with 60 points gained for a 1-1 draw with New Zealand while Pakistan had failed to win a point in their preceding two-match series against Australia that ended earlier this month.

Each series of the WTC is worth 120 points, distributed evenly over the number of matches in a series. The points range from 60 points for each match of a two-Test series to 24 for each match of a five-Test series.

India are firmly placed at the top with 360 points from three series – against the West Indies, South Africa and Bangladesh, who are all yet to get any points.

Australia are in second position with 216 points after winning the opening match of their ongoing three-Test series against New Zealand. New Zealand are on 60 points while England have 56 for their 2-2 draw against Australia.

The top two teams at the end of the league will play the final in the UK in June 2021 with the winners crowned the World Test Champions.

And considering the final will be played in England it means Aus will probably win because Ind have very bad record in England atleast recently. BTW after WTC finals how test ranking for teams will work?

What a futile Championship it is. India and Australia are alreary through to the finals, what are rest of the teams playing for? No competition at all.

Absolutely plus what kind of championship it is where all of the teams aren't playing equal number of matches & all of the tam aren't playing with all the others.

Each team will play six series. It's still early to compare with top teams as they have already finished playing 3 series.
