The Government of India on Monday banned 59 applications, most of them popular Chinese applications such as TikTok, Shareit, Mi Video Call, Club Factory and Cam Scanner, citing threat to national security and sovereignty.

The ban comes amid continuing tensions on the border between India and China and covers a variety of applications from e-commerce to gaming, social media, browsers, instant messaging and file sharing.

Order to Google, Apple
“Upon receiving recent credible inputs that such apps pose threat to sovereignty and integrity of India, the Government of India has decided to disallow the usage ... both [on] mobile and non-mobile Internet-enabled devices,” the Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity) said in statement.

According to sources, Meity has issued instructions to Google and Apple to remove the banned applications from their respective application stores. Additionally, telecom operators and Internet service providers will be asked to block access and use of these applications on their networks.

Data | Is an economic boycott of China feasible for India?

The Ministry said it was invoking its power under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules, 2009.

“... in view of the emergent nature of threats, [the government] has decided to block 59 apps ... in view of information available [that] they are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order,” the government said.
Pointing out that there has been “a strong chorus” in the public space to take strict action against such applications, Meity said that besides citizens, it received exhaustive recommendation for blocking these malicious apps from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The IT Ministry said it received many complaints, including misuse of mobile apps for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India. “The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures,” it said.

Sanchit Vir Gogia, chief analyst and CEO at Greyhound Research, said the ban was easy to implement. “The government just needs to send clear instructions to operators, Internet service providers and the application stores i.e Google’s Play store and Apple’s App Store,” he said, adding that of the entire list, TikTok, Mi Video Call and Cam Scanner were the three most critical apps that people use in India.

The move, he added, effectively gave China a taste of its own medicine as the country had permanently banned applications such as Facebook and Google.

Some of the well-known applications in the banned list include TikTok, Shareit, Mi Video Call, Club Factory, UC Browser, Shein, Clash of Kings, Helo, Mi Community, WeChat, Cam Scanner, Clean Master – Cheetah Mobile, Baidu Translate, Mobile Legends.

-what is your view on this step taken by indian govt?
-does it hurt chinese digital economy?
-Pros and cons for india(android/iphone users) after the ban?
-is the step really taken because of security issues or???

It only hurts Tiktok considering we were their second biggest market, don't know if anyone else was even using other apps as such.
Also lol@ DU privacy app just noticed..amusing to see a Chinese app have that kind of feature :p

Finally, a sane decision taken by GoI. TikTok is menace to society.

But some people are already coming up with an alternative to Tik Tok. App is not the problem because it will be replaced by another app. Real problem is the youth of today who is doing cringy stuff on such apps. I doubt that will stop so a ban hardly matters in the long run. :inti

That is also true. But app was apparently owned/controlled by CCP that was used to spy on India. Overall, good measure to ban it.

As far as alternatives app coming up, that will also have limited shelf life.

Null route Indian subnets. It will mean more bandwidth for the rest of the world. Time to isolate the terrorist goverment of India.

Given your definition of a terrorist, I guess that’s high praise that you consider Indian government a terrorist lol

Seems like this is the latest edition of the surgical strikes. Modi punishes China indeed.

Godi Media at its best. :inti

Let's see if Modi finally can name China in his address to Nation tomorrow.

Godi Media at its best. :inti

Honestly this media is like cancer for the indian society. Instead of talking about peace and talks they are spreading hatred. All countries in Asia should sit together and solve their problems diplomatically.

How can Indians on PP defend this.

I would vomit if our media did this. Embarrassing.

So?

They raise money from Indians, how much money they have made from India? This donation nonsense is cringeworthy.

Lastly, there is a article circulating that some guy reverse engineered TikTok to find serious privacy related concerns(if true than every country should ban it)

You seem to be trying hard in this thread to find usual “Facist Modi” rhetoric by posting random tweets but ignoring the fact that TikTok was needed to be ban one way or the other.

Thank God for the TikTok ban. Was sick of seeing my feed filled with cringe Indian videos

This was on cards because Tiktok has data privacy issues and also having affinity to CCP regime.
Anything spoken against HongKong security law and Xi Jinping gets moderated by platform, which means it’s not a open platform. This was observed in HongKong and USA.
They can take advantage of moderating India based content to their needs.
Anyway this is nothing new this was in talks from last year itself.

Excellent step by GOI as usual.

Nothing.

I would be more than happy if Pakistan banned Tiktok too :inti

Lol.. is it cringeworthy there too? Good thing about youtube is if a person is interested in learning something you can always learn on youtube esp IT, not heard of any such usage of tik tok, so the argument between tiktok vs youtube which had spread across Indian social media last month didn't make much sense to me tbh.

But from what I have come to know tiktok serves(or entertains) middleclass and below , due to ease of use and passive viewing , this would hurt the app entertainment option of those people.

It made much more sense for US to ban Chinese apps considering they don't allow services of USA which are huge earners for American economy.

I am sure many people find it entertaining. I personally find most of the stuff pretty cringy.

You make a good point about the entertainment. Would be interesting to see the demographics of Tiktok users.

I wish same in Canada but Trudeau don’t have courage to upset his masters in China. Chinese apps have serious privacy issues which everyday users shouldn’t ignore it.

If Indian media’s celebration is anything to go by then it seems like India sees banning tik tok as a fitting retaliation for losing 20 soldiers as well as losing territory. I guess this way it works for both. China can keep moving through the LAC and India can keep banning apps.

It is high time that Pakistan also does the same on tik tok as many lives are being lost due to people's stupidity in making a 10-20 sec clip.

Sure but what’s the end game for Pakistan here than a few twitter posts. Twitter is an American company, I am sure they can use that activity from Pakistanis and their leadership while President Trump’s personal opinion on Pakistan and Islam might not sit well with majority if not all of Pakistan

This is such a cheap shot from the Hindutva mob; banning an app?

India network traffic must be banned, blocked, rerouted, and isolated. Black hole the lot into one DMZ sink hole.

The amount of filth and terrorism that's spewed from India make racism in the USA look like a summer picnic.

We've had to outright ban Indian routes and AS numbers. The world should follow suit; lets see if India can survive without the world.

You seem to be more concerned about Indian soldiers who were martyred more than a week ago than the innocent lives lost in Pakistan yesterday-today depending on your time zone. Not that I have an issue with your humane gesture but shouldn’t you be concerned about that and may be Pakistan’s response?

Nearly three times the revenge..... 3 apps blocked for each Bharti sanek killed.... That'll show them Chinese. Next time they will think 10 times before messing with India.

You seem to be more concerned about defending the clown Modi who has butchered innocent lives all throughout his life and then embarrasses his armed forces with hilarious dialogues

Some pathetic responses here but was expected. Some people are just obsessed with anything India.

Good on them banning TikTok.

Wish if they would ban all the other social media apps as well. Imagine a www free of indian trolls.

India should create its own social networking platforms and apps. Surely all those IT experts will be capable of making something indigenous rather than just being off-shore support monkeys.

Good step, but i dont think india did it because of security and privacy but border issues.Where were they when china used india to promote tiktok. UC Browser was used in india decades ago but nobody cared about privacy.
I think india should came up with alternate apps(made in india) to cover these losses.

yes, correct. How can indians compare 20 lives with tiktok apps. If they consider this as reply to 20 lives then shame on them(those who are thinking that). I think Banning PUBG will cost 35 lives...

India has alway choosen coward ways to get revenge from rival countries.for example
-terrorist group created 26/11 and india banned pakistanis in IPL(Aatank ki koi dharm ni hoti)...
-Pakistan trapped mig-21 and Abhinandan and india banned pakistani artiste...
-China killed indian soldiers and india banned Chinese Apps..

Now nepal is creating threat in border and killing soldiers and interesting there is no Nepali apps in india.it would be interesting to see how india will reply to nepal.

This is such a silly thought, india is comparing humans with Mobile apps.

How about dig deep and try to find out the actual reason rather than just blowing hot air.

Chinese apps have tendency of spying on users and supplying crucial data to China. It pose security risk which was recently(pre-Chinese tussle) brought up to media. It was also promoting domestic violence, animal cruelty, rape, and mocking acid attack victims. This app initially was good for fun videos but turn into platform for promoting hate and violence. Good riddance. Lastly, these apps(Chinese apps) are monetarily benefiting from Indian market. TikTok have 1/3 of user based in India. In 2019, users in India spent about 5+billion of hours using TikTok app. We are talking about billions of dollars( simple google reason will help you understand) from Indian market going to China. It’s a small step towards promoting domestic apps(creating jobs for locals) that wouldn’t have security threat attach to it. It’s one way of hurting Chinese firms(even if hurt their 1% off profit) that are flooding Indian market.

Finally. David Warner might stop making those cancerous TikToks of him dancing to Indian songs.

But from what I have come to know tiktok serves(or entertains) middleclass and below , due to ease of use and passive viewing , this would hurt the app entertainment option of those people.
Yeah, apparently the majority of Indian tiktok users are poor. The last app I saw really poor, miserable Indians on, was Facebook, but nowhere to this extent.

Modi continues his strikes against the middle-class and poor :rabada2

It looks silly when they are acquiring our lands and our first action is to ban their apps. Why do I feel this is the most you can expect from this con artist, seeing how bhakts are already engaging in victory laps and calling it a master stroke.

Some pathetic responses here but was expected. Some people are just obsessed with anything India.

Speak for yourself.

Do you know which forum you are on?

What did you expect?

Anyway, seems like India has conceded Galwan valley and are scraping the barrel to show their people we have retaliated.

Finishing move will be a Bollywood Movie.

Chinese must be laughing at this.

Bigot and his illiterate bhakts, a match made in hell.

Bigot and his illiterate bhakts, a match made in hell.

For Brahmins and few other privileged upper caste people, it's a match made in heaven. They couldn't ask for better illiterates than these lot.

Good move. It's already proven how dubious TikTok and a few other Chinese apps are in terms of user privacy. Better late than never.

And people saying this is a "revenge" for the loss of 20 soldiers, don't worry about that. The so called revenge was taken with interest on that very day. There's a reason why China and their mouthpieces, who leave no stone unturned to show the might of their all powerful PLA , have kept mum about that day that too in order to "not spoil the public mood". And now they're sending MMA fighters to train their almighty PLA at the LAC for hand to hand combats. I wonder why. :)

Any sane individual can put two and two together and get to an obvious conclusion. Of course it'd be very hard for few, who have pinned all their hopes on the Chinese to do what their so called "superior martial race" warriors couldn't do for the last seven decades despite trying numerous times. But it is what it is. :)

And to those saying "iNdIA hAvE sUrReNdErEd tHeIr tErRiToRy tO cHiNa :murali " , just look up how things went down last time an outsider force occupied unmanned Indian territory. May be that'll stop you from jumping the gun too early. India are not the ones to surrender territory without putting up a fight.

Hate doing this , but the fake bravado is too nauseating at times. Had to burst the bubble. Cheers !

TikTok has denied sharing information on Indian users with the Chinese government, after New Delhi banned the wildly popular app, citing national security and privacy concerns.

"TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and have not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government," said the company, which is owned by China's ByteDance.

"Further if we are requested to in the future we would not do so. We place the highest importance on user privacy and integrity," TikTok said, adding that it had been invited to a meeting with the Indian government "for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications".

On Monday, India banned 58 other Chinese apps over the same concerns as tensions between the Asian nuclear powers over a deadly clash earlier this month intensified.

In its order, the country's technology ministry said the apps were "prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order".

Among other apps that have been banned are Tencent's WeChat - downloaded more than 100 million times on Google's Android - Alibaba's UC Browser and two of Xiaomi's apps.

Biggest market
India is the biggest driver of TikTok app installations, accounting for 611 million lifetime downloads, or 30.3 percent of the total, app analytics firm Sensor Tower said in April.

Beijing-headquartered ByteDance had plans to invest $1bn in India and open a local data centre, and had recently ramped up hiring in the country.

Anti-China sentiment has long simmered in India over accusations of cheap imports flooding the country. But a deadly border clash earlier this month brought tensions to the fore with calls to boycott Chinese products.

The June 15 hand-to-hand combat in a disputed Himalayan region resulted in the death of 20 Indian soldiers and saw a heavy deployment of forces along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de facto border between the world's two most populous nations.

The deaths triggered outrage on social media with calls to boycott Chinese goods and Chinese flags set on fire at scattered street protests.

A senior minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government demanded a ban on Chinese food while a prominent trading union said it would boycott a range of commodities imported from China.

A hotel union in New Delhi last week said it would not allow Chinese guests to stay in their properties.

Millions of Indians downloaded "Remove China Apps", a mobile application that helped users detect and delete Chinese software before it was removed by Google from its Play Store.

Media reports said Chinese consignments were being held up by customs at major Indian ports.

Despite relations that have been *****ly in the past, India and China have steadily built up strong economic ties in recent years. Annual bilateral trade is worth some $90bn, with a deficit of about $50bn in China's favour.

Cheers !
You should start writing scripts for patriotic bollywood movies. This post gave me goosebumps bro. :inti

Speak for yourself.

Do you know which forum you are on?

What did you expect?

Anyway, seems like India has conceded Galwan valley and are scraping the barrel to show their people we have retaliated.

Finishing move will be a Bollywood Movie.

Chinese must be laughing at this.

Perhaps in your dreams but in reality India has not conceded anything. Its the Chinese establishment who is scared and humiliated to put up its casualty figures after widely reported they lost 43 soldiers.

Yeah just keep running in circles around the Bollywoods and the scripts if that makes you sleep better at night.

Thanks for the suggestion anyways "bro". :inti

Conceded? This might be a birthday gift from our large hearted PM to thankless Chinese PM. :inti

Modi ji will hit them where it hurts the most. He will definitely put a ban on eating Momos in India. :inti

yeah i know this is a good step.clap for modi govt. But the step came in time when border tension with china increased.which means it was not banned due to security and integrity but reply to china for 20 lives

That bold part in your post; so you admit India has lost it's territory and now are putting up a fight with banning the Chinese apps.

Then we all agree and everything is fine, thank you.

India has not "lost" any territory. Until they decide to de escalate with the PLA still firmly inside the Indian claimed areas (like they're now), it's not "lost".

And I meant putting up a fight militarily. Banning a few online applications is not "putting up a fight".

Looks like Congress is not too impressed with Chinese apps being banned

If political suicide is an art, Maino and co. are the Da Vinci of it.

The Italian connection is strong here. Pappu Gandhi's name is Raul Vinci too. So... :)

The companies which have major Chinese investments include Big Basket, Byju’s, Delhivery, Dream 11, Flipkart, Hike, MakeMyTrip, Ola, Oyo, Paytm, Paytm Mall, PolicyBazzar, Quikr, Rivigo, Snapdeal, Swiggy, Uddan, Zomato are some where Chinese companies hold stake.

Just because it Chinese investments doesn’t make it a Chinese company. I own some Amazon and At and T stock, does it make them my family company?

China says concerned over India banning dozens of Chinese apps

China says it is concerned about India's decision to ban Chinese mobile apps such as Bytedance's TikTok and Tencent's WeChat and was making checks to verify the situation.

Looks like China's pocket being hit hard.

This is just preparatory talk before some sort of retaljation, Chinese Govt doesn't pay its bills from TikTok's revenue or sth

*Retaliation* part if fine and we will see when it happens. But what do you mean by just preparatory talks? Have you read the whole article? You know more about China economy that Chinese govt spokeperson?

From the article.
Beijing-headquartered ByteDance had plans to invest $1bn in India and open a local data centre, and had recently ramped up hiring in the country.

Now wonder they are worried. India have hit them hard in their pockets.

So India loses out on an investment of 1B and potential jobs, and its supposed to be a loss for China :13:

Global times is mouth-piece of Chinese propaganda just like Republic TV/Times now is for India.

You can 'LOL' me all you want but please read the Al-Jazeera source I provided previously. Chinese foreign minister himself expressed concern of India banning Chinese apps.

Chinese apps ban: China is strongly concerned, verifying the situation, says Zhao Lijian

It depends on how much shares you hold of the above companies. From the article it mentions the major shareholders of these companies are chinese firms who were more like VCs. Thats a different thing altogether.

TikTok stops working for users in India after govt bans the app

The final blow to TikTok is here. The app is no longer working for users in India. TikTok is one of the 59 Chinese applications banned by the Indian government on late Monday.

Following the ban, the TikTok application had vanished from Google and Apple app stores. Users, however, who already had installed the application could still access it. As of now, we can confirm that TikTok has gone completely offline.

When you open the app, the app shows a message about the government’s order to ban 59 Chinese applications:

The official TikTok website is also no longer available to users in India. The website redirects to tiktok.com/notfound page which shows the same message. TikTok has also started alerting users in India about the ban.

The viral app is not working on major networks such as Airtel and broadband services like Spectra and Exitel as well.

TikTok along with 58 other Chinese apps have been banned in India following an order issued last night. The ban notice may have a big impact on TikTok as it has its biggest user base in India. TikTok has also been receiving the most number of downloads from India.

TikTok has been invited to meet with government stakeholders to respond and submit clarifications, Nikhil Gandhi, TikTok India's head said earlier today. He also added that TikTok has been complying with the data safety practices for users in India.

If Indian media’s celebration is anything to go by then it seems like India sees banning tik tok as a fitting retaliation for losing 20 soldiers as well as losing territory. I guess this way it works for both. China can keep moving through the LAC and India can keep banning apps.

Don't forget, a few patriotic Indians smashed their chinese made plasma tvs in retaliation as well. They sure know how to teach these Cheen a lesson!

While we are at it let's not be hypocrites and hit Vivo, Paytm etc hard in their pockets as well. :inti

Funny, it would be indian tiktokers who would be most affected by lack of immediate income, most of whom are quite poor. GOI attacked its own people more than China, lol.
