India arrived in England as the number 1 Test side in the world and were expected to provide the hosts a tough series.

However, they also arrived in the Old Dart with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ishant Sharma having played county cricket, but the rest of the team having failed to play any longer format cricket since the Afghanistan Test.

As such, captaincy and team selection were talking points.

Virat Kohli sometimes makes perplexing selection calls. The selection of Kuldeep Yadav seemed viable when the weather was dry, a week before the second Test at Lord’s, but on Day 1 the conditions had changed completely, the rain and clouds meaning India needed an additional seamer.

The embarrassing loss at Lord’s also showed that some of players aren’t cut out for this level anymore.

The India A team, under Rahul Dravid, has been doing extremely well over the last year or so. Their English tour ended on a bad note, losing to a strong Lions side, but the youngsters displayed lots of talent and ability overall.

As such, Rishabh Pant, Hanuma Vihari, Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill need to be fast-tracked into the Test team, which would mean the end of the road for Cheteshwar Pujara, Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan.

Management should also have some tough conversations with Ajinkya Rahane and KL Rahul – especially the former, who was India’s best batsman behind Virat Kohli on India’s last overseas leg.

If India want to be competitive overseas in the coming years, the captain and coach should actually start planning for the future.

Pujara has been provided with enough rope, but a batting average of 26.32 over 37 innings outside the subcontinent does not inspire any confidence. Vijay was great for India during the last round of tours, but he has regressed and his inability to even blunt out the new ball is a cause for concern.

Dinesh Karthik has played his last game in whites and should immediately be replaced by Rishabh Pant. There also needs to be a discussion regarding the role of Hardik Pandya – he is neither a third seamer nor a number six batsman. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, if fit, is a better all-rounder.

Kohli needs to make some tough calls before the third Test, at Trent Bridge.

Rishabh Pant and Karun Nair should take the spots of Dinesh Karthik and Cheteshwar Pujara. KL Rahul probably will get another go and Murali Vijay possibly will lose out to Dhawan.

India also need to think about the bowling options – hopefully Jasprit Bumrah is fit – while they also need to pick Mohammad Siraj in the future, as he is a fantastic long-format bowler, with a first-class average of under 20 and a strike rate of 40.

The talent is certainly there, but over the last few years the Test team has hardly seen any changes, with KL Rahul and Karun Nair the only new blood in the mix – and even they haven’t received consistent chances.

The team travel to Australia later this year and selecting a young team might not get winning results immediately, but at least will give some hope for the future.

India will be fine in Australia where tracks are flat. I expect Kohli, Rahul, and Dhawan to score plenty of runs there.

But with tracks being fast and bounce, lazy elegance of sharma, murali and rahane wouldnt work either

There are lots of options, but not sure it'll be effective - new addition not necessarily improves what already is there. Most of Indian batsmen has FC average well over 50, some even in 60s (excluding Tests stats).

I think, one opener slot is open and M Agarwal should get a call. He is IND A team and has scored over 1100 runs this Ranji season at 100+ average (& 70 SR!!), may be a hack (haven't seen him since U19 WC), but a hack in tremendous form. P Shaw is too raw yet, while F Fazal & W Zafar are too old to invest now.

For middle order, I am sure Hanuma Vihari will make the squad - his FC average is touching 60, has scored 750+ Ranji runs at almost 100, and he'll be 25 by AUS tour - if not now, it won't happen in future. Iyer's FC stats are frightening (54/80), and he is in radar for a year, but didn't have a great Ranji season this time - still might find a place in squad, he is latest IND A Captain. Among youngsters, Gill has a FC average of 62 from 2 games, but the most outstanding player by stats is Anmolpreet (Singh) - his 5 game FC career stats are 750+ runs at 126/82 stats, and kid is just 20!!!! But, both are too raw for AUS tour and none was called for IND A. RSharma is still in the loop for a Test recall as well - for AUS, I actually'll pick him ahead of Pujara, who often is counter productive for Australian wickets.

For WK, DK might have played his last Test for IND - his Denmark, followed by batting and keeping might be last nail on his coffin for a IND Test career. Pant's FC stats are 54/96 for almost 2000 runs, but his keeping isn't that great. KBharat is IND A WK and quite good on either side of wicket - if they don't recall Saha (who is still best WK by some distance and has a Test average of 30, FC average of 42, but he'll be 34 by AUS tour), I think Pant & Bharat will make the squad.

For AUS, I am sure IND'll pick one genuine leggi - Kuldeep is one, may be they'll pick Chahal as well, or one last chance for Chawla. Hirwani's son is too raw, while Mishra is done. There is no point taking 4 spinners, therefore I don't think Jadeja will make the tour this time, being a finger spinner.

Fast bowling picks are good & bad - both ways. Good in that sense if fit Bumrah, Shami, Ishant, BK & Umesh are assured picks; bad is that after them next batch is like Dinda, Gurbani, Thakur ...

If IND sticks with Pandeya, then all-rounder's spot is also booked; but I am not sure how he'll bowl in AUS :(

Openers: Dhawan, Agarwal, KL, Vijay
Middle Order: Kohli, Rahne, RSharma, Vihari, Iyer/Pujara/Nair
WK: Pant, Saha/Bharat
All-rounder: Pandeya
Spinners: Ashwin, Kuldeep, Chahal
Pacer: Shami, Bumrah, BK, Ishant, UYadav

That's 23 players (actually 20 - don't think we need to consider Vijay, Saha & Nair), and I am almost certain final 16 will be from these bunch.

Good Analysis of the domestic players.

Fast bowling picks after BK, Shami, Umesh and Bumrah are not Gurbani & Dinda. Guys like Navdeep Saini, Siraj, Ankit Rajpoot and even Avesh Khan are ahead of them. You can check the list of domestic bowlers called to bowl in the India nets during the recent SA tour.

Mayank Agarwal is not exactly a hack, but his performance depends a lot on his mindset and form at a particular time. He has top notch purple patches followed by a long string of low scores. But nevertheless, his bucket load of runs at domestic & India A level over the last 2-3 years need to be rewarded.

Haven't been impressed with Siraj or Avesh, haven't seen Saini - I just picked random names from last Ranji stats. I don't think pace bowling is an issue, at least 3 of the 5 will always be fit, therefore no new face in AUS expected.

Kick out Shastri and bring back Kumble. His pathetic laid back attitude is what harming the indian cricket Team the most atm. Kohli should also not be allowed to enjoy this amount of power. He's just a captain, nothing more than that. He acts like a Don both on and off the field.

A lot will depend on the final scoreline of this series. even a 3-2 loss will mean that no change is really needed.

No matter what team they play India is not doing anything in Australia. We can see they are totally dependent on Kohli which the Aussies would have taken a note off. The ball bounces a lot more in Aus making it tougher for batsmen although it probably does not swing as much as it does in England. It is just a question of what the Aussie margin of victory will be.
