WASHINGTON: India has asked the United States for Predator Avenger drones, which would allow it to remotely drop a bomb on any square inch of Pakistan, the US media reported on Tuesday.

Bloomberg news service has acquired a copy of a formal request the Indian Air Force sent directly to the manufacturers, the General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, in September.

If the transaction goes through, India will become one of the first countries to buy the casually called ‘killing machines’, Predator Avenger drones.

“The unmanned aircraft … are sleek, fast, killing machines. From New Delhi they could hunt militants across Pakistan, and become a strategic consideration in border standoffs with China,” the report pointed out.

The report pointed out that growing defence ties between the military establishments of the two countries increases the possibility of this sale.

India was the second-largest buyer of US arms in 2014, up from virtually nothing five years ago.

“The Avengers also represent a small but significant tilt in the strategic dynamics of a region with three nuclear powers and about 40 per cent of the world’s population,” the report observes.

The reported notes that on Sept 22, the US backed India’s membership in the Missile Technology Control Regime, a prerequisite for buying the drones. Two days later, India’s Air Force sent a letter to San Diego-based General Atomics saying it wanted to purchase the Avenger.

The Avengers can fly for 18 hours, carry 3,500 pounds of munitions and reach an altitude of 50,000 feet.

Inda buying drones from US to hunt militants in Pakistan? Well now this going to be fun :yk

We will give you a fleet of pigeons instead for a special price if you guys ask nicely, will even throw in Admiral Parinda for free :liam

Things must really be bad if world's most peaceful nation has become the biggest importer of weapons.

Shouldn't India be focusing on millions of its poor people?

India wont get any drone from USA. They dont have the sufficent technology and USA never really shares its drones with anyone except Israel.

Wrong move.....India should ideally ask for drones from Israel. Israel will also do knowledge transfer which US won't do. US will just sell the drones.

Will be a pointless buy. The only country that has bought rights to drone Pakistani land is USA. Any such adventure from India won't be tolerated by the nuclear Pakistan.

India just want to compete with the numbers here because Pakistan and China both have built their own armed drone technology that can fire missiles and i guess India is not ready yet for building these at a home so they want to buy from Israel and USA to compete with numbers.

The drone built by Pakistan is named Buraq and the laser-guided missile is named Burq (was successfully tested on TTP butcher in on going operation)

India in talks with US to buy about 100 latest drones

India is in talks with the US for possible procurement of about 100 latest drones - both armed and surveillance versions - worth USD 2 billion to bolster its arsenal keeping China and Pakistan in mind.

The issue is likely to figure in the talks between the two sides as US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter visits India next week.

Ahead of his visit, Carter this week said the US is keen to forge a "closer and stronger" military relationship with India and "a whole bunch of things" will be announced during his India trip to boost Indo-US strategic ties.

Industry sources familiar with India's interest and ongoing talks between the two governments, said India had requested for the latest Avenger drones, an unmanned combat air vehicle, and is mainly being sought with an eye on China.

It has also sought Predator XP category which is a surveillance version for internal security issues and terrorist threats.

According to industry sources, India is looking for about 100 drones worth USD 2 billion.

"Yes, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc (GA-ASI) is aware of India's interest in Predator-series Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA)," Vivek Lall, chief executive of the US and International Strategic Development of General Atomics, had said.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems produces Predator series of remotely piloted aircraft.

Due to American export laws, the US government has to approve the export of a Predator-series RPA to India.

Predator-series RPA could provide a world-class Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capability for India which would include both high-definition radar and Electro-optical/Infrared (EO/IR) coverage along India's borders.

Additionally, the RPA can perform humanitarian aid/disaster relief surveillance over both land and sea.

Lol India needs to realize that these predator drones will be easily shot down as soon as they enter Pakistani airspace.

These drones are neither fast nor stealth.

i think pakistan need not worry about Indias weaponary, obviously its a wealthier nation so one would expect more weapons and more contacts around the world.

Pakistan has the nuclear weapons which is an big enough deterrent, we need to invest in education not just in punjab but all over Pakistan.

Showing testosterone by both nations is silly, we can continue building without the threat of India attacking. Educations and infrastructure is key.

Yep, this is just posturing by India. Right now India wants an enemy and it just has to be Pakistan, since we can't really bully China (lol). Meanwhile, few Indians realize Pakistan face issues of their own against terrorism spreading in from the West.

Yes, but we also need to be more Islamic than what we are now. Deeni education is key.

India, as a country still begs arms from USA. They lack the technology and bravery to fight the war on their own.

That is something everybody knows.... However, the point of the post is....????

USA refused to Pakistan so they would not give to India.
India will use these drones in IOK.
plus, I feel India is good enough to develop their own drone program.

America will be interested in monitoring chinese activities especially in pakistan administrated Kashmir so this a mutually benefitial deal.

Yeah true, China is slow but steadily on its way of owning Pakistani Kashmir, Myanmar muslims fate may await the POK muslims..

against whom?

USA or China?

India will lose.... That's an understatement.... India will be annihilated.
Annihilation is a overstatement.India may lose to China but it will severely cripple china as well.Infact if India had kept its timeline correct it would have had air superiority over China.

USA is a different cup of tea altogether.

You mentioned usa and China. No other countries.

So I do have no idea if it is any other country than above mentioned.

I didn't mention either of usa and china either. What post were you reading?

Based on latest statement of North Korea we can outsource annihilation of US to them.

Agree we will cripple China permanently even if we go down.

All 3 possess nuclear weapons, if any country is at the last stage they will not hesitate to use, so holding the superior weapons is useless..

No country will attack the other, they are not stupid.

But how much Pakistan will remain if there is an attack?

Backward nation, Pakistan has advanced into sending Pigeons and balloons while India is still messing around with drone technology. :afridi

Billion industry nation cannot assemble its own drone? Where the billion dollars are going? Eradicating poverty or toilet technology?

I hope India don't even dream about making surgical strike in Pakistsn as this would escalate situation and make things worse for both countries.

Don't flatter yourself. Only in your dreams.

Nuclear weapons are there for deterrent and good enough reason.

Even if nuclear warfare happen some portion of India will still remain, are you confident of anything remaining in Pakistan?

This is just hypothetical question no need to start nationalistic jingoism.

Who ever remains in India probably will wish they had died.

Many will die a slow painful death from radiation poisoning.

People who survive will have children which will be deformed from the radiation.

Water will be contaminated, food won't grow, India will go from a developing nation to an impoverished African like country.

So don't act proud about a hypothetical nuclear war thinking India will win, there is no winner in a war like that.

But there is still history like Hiroshima for a opportunity to rebuild. There is even a article regarding Chernobil recently published which shows how people coping around, there is even tourism started around.

It's possible for some portions to survive without too many difficulties.

The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were between 15 to 20 kilotons each.

That is peanuts compared to the nukes of today.

I am not sure if Pak releases that sort of information, but I know estimates are that their highest yield of nukes are in the range of 300-500 kilotons.

My information may be old they may have increased by now.

That is a massive amount of initial damage followed by nuclear fallout that would probably be even worse than the initial damage.

That's why I said there is still chances of salvaging some area for India while Pakistan have no chance. Rest is for people who left.

Like I said, glad I would be dead.

You will be walking around in severe pain, hair coming out, with a 8 legged baby in your hands, no food to eat or water to drink.

The some what untouched parts of India would be overcrowded within days of the war with fighting for the little food and water available.

Good luck salvaging that.

May be what you saying will happen, but still fittest will survive and redevelopment will happen eventually.

PS : I already said multiple times this hypothetical question and I don't want this to happen. Even if there is nuclear war India will not strike first.

I like your optimism :farhat

What's life without hope. However improbable it seems still it's not impossible.

What would be ironic in this scenario would be Bangladesh having to cope with millions of Indian refugees haha and Afghanistan having to cope with millions of Pak refugees.

The world would truly be reversed that day.

When Pakistan completely wiped out where will be refugees??

India will aim at strategic locations. The plan will be to do maximum damage to military installations, and then to urban centers. Not every square inch of Pak will be blown up.

Obviously there will be survivors.

But my initial question was total damage to either countries. If there is a nuclear war how much complete devastation of one country leave with other country have some region left?

Maybe they want to use it to spy on Naxal rebels

India 'clears final hurdle to join Missile Technology Control Regime'

After MTCR's announcement, India and the US are expected to fast-track their discussion on sale of predator series of unmanned aircraft for the Indian military.

The Predator drone, which recently eliminated the Taliban leader in Afghanistan, is the preferred tool of the CIA.

Membership into MTCR is a huge boost for India's ability to procure this capability.

I was amazing at using predator drones. Used to get multi kills galore

The collateral damage will only further fuel the separatist movement there.

The United States government has approved the sale of a naval variant of the Predator drone made by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc to India, the U.S.-based company said on Friday.

Reuters reported earlier on Friday that the U.S. government was expected to authorize the sale of drones ahead of a visit next week by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India has been looking to buy 22 of the unarmed surveillance aircraft, MQ-9B Guardian, worth more than $2 billion to keep watch over the Indian Ocean.
