Indian authorities have prevented an award-winning photographer from flying to the United States to collect her Pulitzer Prize, the latest of several Kashmiri journalists barred from leaving the country.

Sanna Irshad Mattoo was one of four journalists working for Reuters news agency that took home the prestigious award for feature photography this year.

The 28-year-old has won plaudits for documenting life in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu Kashmir (IIOJK).

Mattoo was stopped by immigration authorities at New Delhi airport late on Tuesday and prevented from boarding while two of her colleagues were permitted to leave the country.

She later tweeted a picture of her ticket that was stamped “cancelled without prejudice”.

“I don’t know what to say … this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me,” Mattoo, who is also a fellow of the prestigious Magnum Foundation, told AFP.

“Only I was stopped without any reason and the others were allowed to go. Maybe it has something to do with me being a Kashmiri.”

Tuesday was the second time this year that Mattoo was prevented from leaving India.

In July, she was stopped in a similar manner at the same airport while on her way to Paris for a book launch and photography exhibition.

Thousands have been killed in IIOJK since the start of a rebellion against Indian rule in 1989, and more than half a million troops are permanently stationed in the region.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government stripped the territory of its limited autonomy in 2019, severing internet connections for months and detaining political leaders to forestall an anticipated backlash.

Foreign journalists have been barred from IIOJK and local reporters based in the territory say they have come under pressure to tone down their work.

‘Arbitrary and excessive’
Several other Kashmiri journalists have also been prevented by authorities from travelling abroad in the past three years.

Independent journalist Aakash Hassan, a regular contributor to the Guardian newspaper, was not allowed to board a flight from New Delhi to Sri Lanka for work in July.

He told AFP that months later, he has still received no information from authorities as to why he was denied permission to travel.

“Given the pattern, it looks like it only happens to Kashmiri journalists,” Hassan told AFP.

The decision to prevent Mattoo from leaving was “arbitrary and excessive”, Beh Lih Yi of the Committee to Protect Journalists said in a statement.

She called on India to cease “all forms of harassment and intimidation” against journalists working in occupied Kashmir.

India is a larger and more stupid version of Israel.

When you hide or stop journalism, you have a lot to hide but we know of the crimes of India in Kashmir.

It's a combo of Chinese and Israeli strategy. BJP got the motivation after seeing what the Chinese did in XianJiang with the Uighurs. The implementation during and after Aug 5th was Israeli strategy. Cause economic consequences and round up the fringe elements.

China owns the land acc to Int law.

Israel and India are occupiers acc to Int law.

Lets stick to India. Stopping journalists from travelling shows India is hiding its crimes or attempting to do so.

They don't stop everyone. Read about Rana Ayyub. She posts anti India stuff on Wash post every week. They only stop the stooges that are being taken advantage by Foreign countries through awards etc. Every body knows Pulitzer, booker etc prizes are highly politicized. A kashmiri Muslim woman is an ideal person to be paraded in front of the world by the liberal west and Islamic entities there. It has the potential to cause massive embarrassment to GOI. One shouldn't expect the bar to be the same for liberal west and India. India is a lot conservative and not everything should be looked through the lens of the west. Let's say India is somewhere between China and USA when it comes to press freedom. Closer to US than China.

Major Crackdown On Jamaat In Kashmir, Properties Worth Crores To Be Seized

Srinagar: In a major crackdown on banned outfit Jamaat e Islami (JEI) in Jammu and Kashmir, the State Investigation Agency (SIA) has initiated measures to seize assets of JEI worth hundreds of crores of rupees.

The agency has identified 188 properties of Jamaat and the first seizure of assets started today. Nine properties, including two school buildings belonging to JEI, were seized by the SIA in Shopian today.

SIA said that Shopian is highly significant for Jamaat and they chose to launch the crackdown on party assets in the same district.

"Shopian properties of JEI are the first to be notified in a series of properties belonging to the group in other districts of J&K. Shopian has a lot of significance vis a vis Jamaat," said an SIA statement.

Since morning, SIA sleuths, accompanied by heavy police contingents, raided the properties and formally seized them after obtaining an order from the District Magistrate of Shopian.

The agency put up banners at the seized properties, restricting entry and use of those premises.

Jamaat e Islami is the largest politico-religious organisation in Jammu and Kashmir with a massive network of schools and other social infrastructure before it was banned in 2019.

Jamaat is accused of supporting terrorism. It was the ideological mentor of Hizbul Mujahideen, the largest indigenous terrorist group in Kashmir in the 1990s.

"Seizure of these assets will choke the availability of funds for secessionist activities and dismantle the ecosystem of anti-national elements and terror networks hostile to India's sovereignty" said the SIA, adding that the properties have been taken over under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act or UAPA.

According to SIA, the seizure of assets will help "uproot the menace of terror funding to a great extent in J&K, besides being a stepping stone towards ensuring rule of law and a society without fear".
