New Delhi: Opener KL Rahul, who is currently missing the ongoing home T20I series against South Africa because of right groin strain, is also a doubtful starter for the Edgbaston Test against England, scheduled to be played from July 1-5.

Rahul was named the skipper of the Indian side for the T20 series in absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma. However, the opener pulled out of the Indian squad on the eve of the first match in Delhi and since then Rishabh Pant has been the skipper.

The stylish batter was also named deputy to Rohit for the tour of England, where India are to play three T20Is and three ODIs apart from the lone Test, which will be the fifth and final Test of the extended series that started last year but had to be stopped after four games because of Covid cases in the Indian squad.

According to the Cricbuzz report, there is no clarity on the time duration of Rahul missing action. He is believed to have reported at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru a few days back, but the diagnosis of his complaint is not complete yet.

The report added that Rahul’s participation in the England series is doubtful but there is no confirmation if he will have to skip the white ball games as well. The first batch of the Indian team will fly to England on Friday (June 16) and another one, including coach Rahul Dravid, Pant and Shreyas Iyer, on June 20.

There is also no guarantee that the selection committee will name a replacement for Rahul as it had already announced a 17-member squad that includes three openers. Without Rahul, the team for the Test will have Rohit and Shubman Gill as the openers and Mayank Agarwal will be named in the squad if there will be a demand from the team management.

India’s Test squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain) Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Mohd Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Prasidh Krishna

Looking at the way England is playing now, it really was a bad decision by Indian players to leave before the last test just to play in IPL. What could have been a series win will most likely be a drawn series now. :inti

KL Rahul Set To Miss England Series, Hardik Pandya Could Captain vs Ireland: Report

Senior opener KL Rahul is all set to miss the 'fifth' Test against England in Birmingham next month as he is unlikely to recover from a groin injury that forced him out of the ongoing T20I series against South Africa. In another development, Hardik Pandya is likely to captain the white-ball squad in England as Rishabh Pant, who is currently leading the T20 side, will join the Indian Test squad in UK only after the South Africa series.

Rahul is a major blow because he is an all conditions bat and generally starts a series well, scored hundreds in Eng and SA both at the start of the series ( in Eng he scored 80 in bowling friendly conditions in 1st test and then 100 in 2nd test).

So, him missing out is a bit of concern for us. I hope they give Gill a chance and not throw in Pujara in the mix which would lead us to another torture.

Tripathi finally gets a look in and so does Samson. Will be interesting to see if they get a game though.

Let's see how Kohli performs,if he does this will be his second great run.Mark my words!

Who do you think should be in the Squad?

Although it is the “5th Test”, this will essentially play out like a one-off match in many respects.

I would say with England playing themselves into scintillating form and having home advantage then they start as favourites.

But India is a quality Test team, and their bowlers in English conditions are particularly good.

This one could go either way.

Rahul batted beautifully in England last time. Not sure if any replacement opener can handle English conditions

Though Rahul will be missed, I think Shubman Gill will be a good replacement for him. I do feel that India will be crushed in the Test match as they are fresh out of IPL and the likes of Kohli and Rohit are in pathetic form.

What happened to Prithvi Shaw? Looks like his career is over Bhaag Viru Bhaag?? Not even picked for Ireland T20s where two more slots are vacated from the top 4.

Rohit, Rahul, Gill, Mayank, Eswaran ahead in reckoning among test openers.

Only in the first test, or may be in the 2nd test too, moderately only though.

IIRC, his irresponsible shot in the 2nd test triggered huge collapse.

Who do you think should be in the Squad?
He has flattered to deceive too many times in his career for me to get concerned about his absence. So not at all bothered by his absence.

i feel there's only one way the test will be going.

Our IPL stars will rock up at the first test playing a battle hardened home side in their conditions who have had 3 tests to test their strengths and get their combo's ready.
On the other hand, one of our openers is not available, the captain is still a hit and miss in red ball cricket. for the other guys auditioning for the 2nd openers role, both Gill & Mayank have glaring gaps in their techniques and the moving ball eventually finds them out.
Our one drop batsman if selected will be on the back of grinding county attacks - May still be a blessing in disguise- mind you.
Our two drop batsmen is not in his hottest of streaks and is in a bit of a slump - again by his own lofty standards,
We donot know who our three drop would be- Shreyas is untested in Eng conditions.
Our keeper is a another hit and miss player who has the single handed potential to turn the match in our favor - lets see.
no idea about spinners- one or two or who will play. this is where i wish we had landed up at least 20 days earlier.
our quicks - i can only see shami and jazz boom as certainities and i am all for throwing Umraan malik into the mix, would be good if his searing pace can make them eng bats hop around and unsettle them.
All in all i'd say if not for covid and rain we would have taken the last series 4-1 as eng was ripe for the picking esp the last test.
I see this ending as 2-2.

Cant believe 120 kmph all time legend Sir Bhuvi Sobers is our VC. Generally you'd make a young guy who is the next incumbent into the captaincy role as the VC. Bhuvi bradman steyn has never shown any leadership streaks, is not the hottest explosion of talent and is not going to set the ground on fire. This dude has singlehandedly blocked the progress of a young india pacemen consistently since 2018 when his last good day in an India shirt was and we won. He'd struggle to make the first XI of 10 of the 15 odd odi playing nations. What a collosal waste of a position , hoping this is his last appearance in a blue India shirt- thank him for his services and move on, long due.

I think England may win the final Test. They have the momentum.

India, on the other hand, have declined.

India should have stayed the course last September and not let down the fans in England.

Last year India would have won the meet 3-1.

They now risk blowing the series win.

Prioritising IPL could have messed it up for them.

Senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has not travelled to the United Kingdom along with his team mates for the one-off 'fifth Test' after testing positive for COVID-19, a BCCI source told PTI on Monday. Ashwin is currently in quarantine and will only join the squad after meeting all protocols requirements. The Indian team had left for UK on June 16.

"Ashwin hasn't travelled with the squad to UK as he has tested positive for Covid 19 before departure. But we are hopeful that he will recover well in time before the Test match starts on July 1," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"However he might miss the practice game against Leicestershire," the source added.

The rest of the squad is already in Leicester and started training under supervision of bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and batting coach Vikram Rathour.

Rahul Dravid, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer have reached London after finishing the T20 assignment against South Africa and will travel to Leicester on Tuesday.

The Ireland-bound squad under VVS Laxman will leave for Dublin on either June 23 or 24 as the team members have been given a three-day rest.

Who would've thought that both the test teams would have such drastic changes.

England look in much better shape than India. If Rahul misses out, our batting becomes even more fragile.

Ironically a lot will now depend on Pujara who was dropped prior to this series. Not sure what to expect of Kohli, but it seems to be a given that Anderson will once again have an opportunity to win this battle.

Cant believe 120 kmph all time legend Sir Bhuvi Sobers is our VC. Generally you'd make a young guy who is the next incumbent into the captaincy role as the VC.

Honestly under RD I don't see any clear roadmap with regards to our T20I team.

I have given up hopes of the WT20 later this year. With this team, return of Rohit/Kohli and Bumrah will not change much. We're still not a side that can tear a bowling side apart, nor do we have an attack that threatens to pick wickets.

RD likes line+length bowlers, much like his captaincy days, and those guys won't win you T20s. Such conservative thinking is just a recipe for disaster.

Team India’s preparations ahead of the rescheduled Birmingham Test against England, starting July 1, have taken a massive hit as some of the team members have contracted Covid-19.

On Tuesday, several media reports claimed that ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin missed out on the flight to England after returning a positive test. And now, a report carried in the Times of India stated that former India captain Virat Kohli was also struck by the virus after arriving in London a few days ago.

“Yes, Virat too was hit by Covid after returning from holidaying in the Maldives, but he’s recovered now,” a source was quoted as saying.

“This now means that India’s tour game against Leicestershire from June 24 won’t be as intense as coach Rahul Dravid wanted it to be, since the medical advice is to not overload the players after they’ve suffered Covid-19. There could be more Covid cases in the team,” the source further stated.

Kohli recovering from Covid is surely a good sign for the visitors who are already leading the five-match Test series 2-1. On Wednesday, Kohli also shared his pictures from India’s training session ahead of the rescheduled Test.

“Practice well. Stay happy," he wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, several pictures have surfaced on social media in which the likes of Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma could be seen getting clicked with fans.

According to a Zee News report, the duo went shopping in London on Sunday, which was an off day for the squad.

Amid all these reports, there is no official word from the BCCI on the entire episode.

It has also been learned that Ashwin will soon join the squad in London. New travel arrangements are being made for the veteran cricketer and he should be with the rest of his teammates soon.

Jayant Yadav was kept as a standby should Ashwin fail to recover in time. The Haryana spinner was called to the NCA in Bangalore. However, that option has now been ruled out as Ashwin has fully recovered and is expected to fly out in the next 24 hours, most probably on Wednesday.

Dravid has joined the Rohit Sharma and Co as the BCCI posted a couple of photos on their Twitter handle where the head coach was seen addressing the team in huddle. The Indian players have already started training in Leicester as they posted a video and a couple of photos of their training session on Monday.

Both the batsmen look similar in style

Looks like Bharat copied his batting from Rahul.

4-day Warm-up Match • India tour of England, 2022

IND 246/8 (60.2)

LEIC

Day 1: Stumps

Bharat and Kohli lead India effort on mixed day in Leicestershire warm-up match

An unbeaten 70 from Srikar Bharat was the standout performance by an India player on the first day of the tour match against a Leicestershire XI that included Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna.

India’s tour of England and Ireland got off to a shaky start on the opening morning of the warm-up fixture against a combined Leicestershire and India XI on Thursday.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill’s opening stand of 35 ended abruptly when the younger opener was caught behind off Will Davis for 21, with Rishabh Pant, part of a rejigged opposition XI, taking the catch.

The wickets continued to tumble in Leicester, with three leading India batters departing in quick succession – Rohit Sharma (25), Hanuma Vihari (3) and Shreyas Iyer (0) joining Gill back in the hutch early.

And Ravindra Jadeja (13) was the fifth batter to fall in the morning session, leaving India 90/5 at lunch.

It was a concerning morning for India’s top-order, who particularly struggled against Leicestershire seamers Will Davis and Roman Walker.

Two players with vastly contrasting profiles set about repairing the damage after lunch, with Virat Kohli and Srikar Bharat putting on a partnership of 57 in the afternoon.

Kohli’s 33 came off 69 balls and featured five boundaries, including one big six off Prasidh Krishna, with the former skipper looking in reasonable touch before he was trapped in-front by Walker.

And Bharat strengthened his case for a first India cap with a timely half-century, top-scoring on the day for India.

The 28-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has been in and around the India set-up in both white-ball and red-ball cricket for three years, appearing in a number of squads as injury cover but yet to feature as a starting player.

Yet his chances of making his debut at Edgbaston against England will only have been strengthened by his outstanding 70 not out from 111 deliveries, with Bharat still there at stumps alongside Mohammed Shami, with India up to 246/8.

While it was the English seamers who did the damage with the ball, Leicestershire’s attack also feature some of India’s bowlers in order to get the whole squad some game time ahead of the upcoming T20Is against Ireland and rescheduled fifth Test against England.

Jasprit Bumrah bowled nine rusty but useful overs, while Prasidh Krishna got through a good set of overs himself, picking up the wicket of Shreyas Iyer along the way.

India declared on their overnight score of 246/8 and now the focus would be on the likes of Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj to see if they can make the ball talk against Leicestershire on Day 2 of the ongoing tour game.

This kid, Rishab Pant from Leicester, looks like a good batsman. Atleast good enough for Indian trundlers

:inti

Thakur needs to up his batting a bit. Can't play like a slogger who sometimes click.

Is umraan playing in this game? I seriously think he should be selected in the first XI for test as he has the pace to put eng on back foot. else we are goners.

Rohit Gill Vihari Kohli Shreyas Pant will start
Jadeja, Bumrah, Shami and Siraj as well

Question is only if final player will be 6th batter or else seam allrounder Shardul

Lol what Umran is coming nowhere near the Test side

I feel he should have played this game against leics. someone with true pace is an asset. If he did well would be the stepping stone for entry into test team. If we get someone with genuine pace, will be so useful to soften the batsmen and push them onto the back foot. a total new dimension to the attack.
Just like shane bond was to NZ team in early 2000's.

Good line up.
but i think management will go for che pu instead of vihari. I also think u need 5 bowlers to win a test - i'd go for shardul instead of shreyas. Cant ignore Lord Thakur - :)

Day 2: 3rd Session - Leicestershire trail by 19 runs

So good going by Leics but a few positives for India too I suppose.

India vs Leicestershire: Pant, Bharat, bowlers have fine outing on Day 2 of warm-ups

KS Bharat top-scored with an unbeaten 70 for India as big guns Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli fell after showing signs of promise on day one in Leicester.

Rishabh Pant decided to rise in the west after his woes in the sub-continent, batting in his signature attacking manner to hog the limelight on the second day of the warm-up match between India and Leicestershire.

One among four India players to turn out for the English county side in the practice match meant to help the visitors acclimatise with the conditions, Pant knocked his way to an entertaining 76 off 87 balls at Grace Road.

During his 154-minute stay in the middle, Pant entertained the crowd with 14 boundaries and a six.

Responding to India's 246 for eight declared after a day of multiple rain interruptions, Leicestershire was primed to take a sizable lead over the tourist when Pant was in his element.

But the possibility died down with the swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter's dismissal, thanks to a good catch by Shreyas Iyer off the bowling of left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja.

This was after they were reeling at 138 for six at one stage of the innings.

Leicestershire's first innings ended at 244, two less than India's total.

Meanwhile, seamer Mohammad Shami was seen jumping on Cheteshwar Pujara's back to celebrate his wicket, even as the batter walked back to the dressing room smiling. Pujara, who was out for a duck, is part of the Leicestershire XI in the match.

The 24-year-old Pant, who oversaw the Indian team's excellent comeback in the T20I series against South Africa at home but struggled to score runs and got out in identical fashion, played some fine shots on Friday.

There was a lovely cover drive against Mohammed Shami while he was engaged in some sort of a battle with the world-class India seamer. Then, Pant used the pace of Umesh Yadav and played a scoop for a six to bring up his half-century.

Besides Pant, Rishi Patel and Roman Walker contributed 34 each for the hosts.

Among the Indian bowlers, Shami and Jadeja were the most successful with figures of 3/42 and 3/28 respectively.

There were two wickets apiece for Shardul Thakur, who was taken to the task by Pant and Co, and Mohammed Siraj.

Thakur's lack of pace helped the batters play him without any difficulty.

Opening the batting a day after his unbeaten 70 in the first essay, Srikar Bharat (31 not out) and Shubman Gill (38) added 62 runs for the first wicket when India batted the second time in the four-day match.

Gill was bowled by Will Davis after his 34-ball knock, during which he hit eight fours.

Hanuma Vihari (9) was giving Bharat company when the stumps were drawn with India ahead by 82 runs.

India was 84 for one at the close of play.

It was interesting to see Saini bowl and Sai Kishore field late in the day. Anyone know who else they've brought along as net bowlers?

All eyes would be on how the India batting order performs on Day 3 of the ongoing tour game against Leicestershire. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma who failed to get going in the first innings, will look to stay at the crease for a long haul and spend some valuable time in the middle.

India were 80 for one at stumps on Day 2, leading the hosts by 82 runs. KS Bharat was batting unbeaten on 31 while Hanuma Vihari was also unbeaten on 9. Shubman Gill had earlier given India a brisk start before he was dismissed on 38.Earlier,Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami took three wickets each as India bowled out Leicestershire for 244.

As a result, India took a two-run lead heading into their second innings. Rishabh Pant top-scored for the hosts with a brilliant fifty before being dismissed on 76. Earlier, India declared on their overnight score of 246/8. It was KS Bharat who helped India go past the 200-run mark after the top-order fell cheaply.

Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Virat Kohli on 67 as India lost their eighth wicket against Leicestershire. Virat Kohli was looking solid at the middle but Bumrah eventually helped his side get rid of him.

The match is very important from India's perspective as it will prepare them for the rescheduled fifth Test match. Earlier, India declared on 246/8 before bundling out Leicestershire for 244.

India vs Leicestershire, Tour Match, Day 3 Highlights:Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja hit fifties in the second innings as India managed to a 366-run lead over Leicestershire on Day 3 of the ongoing four-day tour game. Kohli was dismissed on 67 by Jasprit Bumrah while Jadeja remained unbeaten on 56 as managed to reach a total of 364 for nine at stumps on Day 3.

Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah had got the wicket of Virat Kohli on the latter's individual score of 67. Kohli was looking solid at the middle but Bumrah eventually helped his side get rid of him. India's preparation for this week's Test against England have hit a hurdle with news that captain Rohit Sharma has tested positive to Covid-19.

The BCCI confirmed Rohit had tested positive via a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) on Saturday, with the India skipper currently in isolation at the team hotel ahead of the rescheduled fifth Test against England that commences in Edgbaston on Friday.

Rohit had been participating in India's warm-up match against a Leicestershire XI at Uptonsteel County Ground, with the 35-year-old having made 25 in the opening innings of the match on Thursday.

However Rohit did not feature during India’s second innings on Saturday, with the BCCI confirming the right-hander will undergo further testing on Sunday to determine the extent of his ailment.

Virat Kohli shows encouraging form in Leicestershire warm-up match
The Test in Edgbaston is the fifth and final Test match of the series that commenced last year but had to be postponed following a Covid outbreak in the India camp.

India currently lead the series 2-1 and can claim their first Test series triumph on England soil since 2007 by avoiding defeat in Birmingham.

If Rohit does recover in time to lead India during the match it will be his first Test in charge away from home after he took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli earlier this year.

A Test victory for India will also provide them with valuable points on the World Test Championship standings, with Rohit's side currently occupying third place on the standings behind Australia and South Africa.

Damn, so Rohit to miss another test. Who is captain now? Kohli or Pant??

Unfortunate if Rohit misses out as he's good on English pitches. It's the only country he has an away test century in

I wonder who'll be the captain if Rohit has to miss the Test.

Don't think Rohit has much of a career left for India especially in tests. Dude seems disinterested and unfit for national duty.

May be ODI WC next year will be his swansong in India colors.

Rohit anyways had a mediocre test caree with one good series in England away from home. He has missed so many games away in last two years that he might not even get chance to perform overseas and uplift his test cricket legacy.

Kohli is the only Indian test great from the golden age of Indian cricket between 2015-2021. Maybe Bumrah and Pant in future.

Jasprit Bumrah set to become the first Indian fast bowler in 35 years to captain India in Test cricket. (Reported by Indian Express).

Won't mind. But we need to keep in mind this is a very, very important Test for us. A loss here would deny us a Test series victory in England, which most teams would die for.

Man we will get mauled in this test match. :))

First of all Eng is in tremendous form and now Indian team without its captain.

We should have finished the series last year when it was a golden opportunity.

It will be tough few days for us fans here next week..brace for impact :inti

So our two best batters this series are out.

Only rain can save India now. Unless the replacements give inspirational performances like Gabba 2021, this game is already done and dusted.

It is bound to happen ,best chance for India was complete the series last year only as England top order was struggling , stokes was not in the team ,.But again for playing IPL india thrown the England series. As kohli is not captain (need aggressive captain to win in England) bumrah no experience as captain, best batsman Rahul unavailable, now Rohit COVID positive, England are good form specially bairstow, no preparation for India. Only we can assume the result . India to get humiliated

Players earning millions in IPL is what matters the most now. Match hasn't even started yet and you are already giving up lol. Always believe in #SabChangaSi. :inti

replacements for india are always better. kohli is finished now. rohit is pretty good yes. would be a huge miss but i am sure india has some able replacements. i like the gill, shaw combo.

no one dies for a series win in england. series win in india or australia holds much higher value. thats why pakistan beating india away from home was a phenomenal achievement back in the days.

Kohli is playing. It's Rahul who's missing. Him and Rohit pretty much carried our batting last year along with lower order contributions.

3-6 of Pujara, Kohli, Rahane and Pant did squat.

It may well be 2-2, don't loose your sleep m8. We still will struggle to match 0-12 consecutive tests stuff of legends in a particular country.
