India tour of England (2022)

Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant,Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja's half-centuries were the highlights as the tour match between India and Leicestershire ended in a draw.

India had declared for 246/8 in their first innings before bowling Leicestershire out for 244. The visitors then went on to score 364/9 before declaring in their second essay.

Leicestershire were 219/4 when both teams decided to shake hands. Notably, several Indian players featured for Leicestershire in the match, while some, like Cheteshwar Pujara, appeared for both teams.

In a blow for India, though, their captain Rohit Sharma tested positive for COVID-19 on the penultimate day of the tour match. The match was practice for India ahead of the rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston.

Mayank Agarwal added to India’s Test squad

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has added Mayank Agarwal to India’s Test squad for the rescheduled fifth Test as cover for captain Rohit Sharma, who tested positive for COVID-19. Mayank has left for the UK and will link up with the squad in Birmingham.

India’s Test squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Mohd Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Mayank Agarwal

We all know that India won the series last year - Kohli further cemented his legacy as the GOAT Asian Test captain and India extended the gap between themselves and the second greatest Asian Test team ever.

This is a meaningless exhibition match and should be viewed in isolation. Both teams have different captains, coaches and personnel - the outcome of the match should have no bearing on the 2021 series.

This match should not be taking place in the first place. There is no context to it.

Agreed. India were clear winners. Iirc first test could have easily been an india win. They only needed to chase 200 odd. India were 50 something for 1.

This is a completely different team now for india. Lots of changes in coaching stuff for England too obviously.

Potts, leach, ollie Robinson and perhaps either Anderson or wood would be England's main attack. Stokes to offer support. India haven't played vs potts. I don't think Jamie will get picked.

England with Pope stokes root and bairstow look well settled. India have played against all of them barring stokes last time. But stokes is an ATG. So yes a single stokes alone can make a difference. That's how good of a player he is.

India have a new look side with Gill coming back in now I believe. Bowling looks good with the usual. Bumrah shami siraj and thakur who has been nothing short of exceptional.

With Rohit Sharma seemingly a doubt for the high-stakes upcoming Test between India and England, India have a captaincy conundrum.

Rohit tested positive for Covid-19 during the warm-up game against Leicestershire, missing the second innings of the match.

There is hope in the Indian team management that he will recover in time for the Test on July 1, but should he fail to do so, India will have a captaincy conundrum, with vice-captain KL Rahul also ruled out of the clash.

On Monday, India called up Mayank Agarwal, the opener, to join the squad in Birmingham as cover for Rohit.

The series is vital for both sides, with the series on the line as well as crucial ICC World Test Championship points up for grabs.

The Indian squad still has a few members in their ranks who can step up to fill the void. Here, we take a look at a few of those candidates:

Jasprit Bumrah

If Bumrah is indeed tasked with leading the side, it will be a historic moment for Indian cricket. Bumrah will become the first pacer since Kapil Dev to captain an Indian unit in the longest format. That's a gap of three decades.

Bumrah has risen through the ranks in Indian cricket and is now a member of the leadership group. He was earlier named vice-captain during India's tour of South Africa during the ODI series, with KL Rahul leading the side in Rohit Sharma's absence. He was also the vice-captain during the Test and T20I series against Sri Lanka, serving as Rohit's deputy.

Captaining the side though will still be a big task nonetheless for Bumrah, who has so far played 29 Tests at the international level. He is yet to don the leadership hat for India in any format, and has also not captained a side in the IPL.

Rishabh Pant

The rising star is being groomed as a future captain by the Indian team management. He has also had plenty of leadership experience in the IPL, leading the Delhi Capitals for two seasons.

Pant recently had his first taste of captaincy in international cricket during the five-match T20I series at home against South Africa. It wasn't the most auspicious of starts for Pant, as India lost the first two contests of the series. The team regrouped though, winning the next two matches before rain led to a no-result in the fifth match in Bengaluru.

Pant's natural aggressive instincts could come in handy as a leader, with India going for the hunt in the fifth match in a series they are already leading 2-1. It now remains to be seen whether the team management tasks him with the responsibility in a high-stakes Test.

Virat Kohli

An outside bet, but what a story it would be if India were to clinch a historic series victory under the leadership of the man who started it all. Kohli gave up the captaincy in the longest format after a 2-1 series defeat in South Africa. But there is no questioning the pedigree of his leadership.

Under his guidance, India scaled new heights in Test cricket, becoming the No.1 ranked side in the world and reaching the final of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship. Kohli is India's most successful captain in the longest format, with India winning 40 out of the 68 matches under his leadership – a win percentage of 58.82.

Whether Kohli remains keen on donning the captaincy hat again remains to be seen. But India could do much worse than tasking the responsibility to a man under whose guidance they took a 2-1 lead in the series.

I would go with Bumrah or Kohli. Doubt though Kohli will be interested in the captaincy. Bumrah deserves a go. He has been brilliant in multiple tough away tours to Australia, England and South Africa.

Looks like the ECB are desperate to cater to Indian fans. The playing times are going to be made more India friendly. Abandoning the traditional 11 am start.

Not sure if I have seen such flexibility from ECB anytime in the recent past.

Team India head coach Rahul Dravid on Wednesday gave a big update on the health of Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who had tested positive for COVID-19 earlier. Speaking to the media in a virtual press conference, Dravid spoke about whether Rohit Sharma would be available for the game or not. It is important to note that Rohit had tested positive for COVID-19 during the warm-up fixture against Leicestershire.

"So the update on Rohit is that he is being monitored by our medical team, he is not yet been ruled out. Obviously, he needs to get the negative test to be available. We will keep monitoring him, we have still got close to 36 hours to go so he will have a test later tonight and one maybe tomorrow morning as well. We will see, it is really up to the medical team and sports science team to decide on that. We will keep monitoring."

India had played out a draw in their warm-up game against Leicestershire while England defeated New Zealand 3-0 in the three-match Test series.

There have been reports doing the rounds that Jasprit Bumrah will lead India in the Test match if Rohit fails to recover in time. To this Dravid said that it is better that the communication comes from the official source.

"As to the answer to your next question (whether Bumrah would be captain), I think it is probably better that the communication comes officially from the official sources. I am not sure whether Chetan (Sharma) is but you know, once we have exact clarity on Rohit then I think you will hear from official sources. It is not for me to give out official communication," Dravid said.

When asked whether the situation regarding Rohit Sharma has disrupted the team's preparations for the Test, Dravid said: "Look, it is what it is. When I took this job, even I would not have predicted that there would be so many captains in the last 6-7 months. It happens right, there have been some unfortunate injuries to people. Even here, it is quite unfortunate what has happened to Rahul and Rohit in the last three weeks. Sometimes we have had to balance out the workloads. We just have to react to that."

"It is not something that you start off thinking that this is what I want to do, but if the situation arises, you react to it. Despite the number of captains we have had, we have played some good cricket in the last 6-8 months. Yes, obviously the South Africa Test series was the one where I would have certainly liked to win that series after going 1-0 up. Even in that, we were not outplayed. We were very close in those games. Some of our players were also not available for that Test series. We are keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that we do not have to deal with these situations. We have to react, we are clear about our communication with people. If something happens, we have our plans and contingency plan," he added.

India Test Squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Mohd Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Prasidh Krishna

England have announced their playing XI for the rescheduled fifth Test against India at Edgbaston starting Friday, 1 July.

James Anderson has been declared fit for the Test against India at Edgbaston. The veteran star sustained an ankle injury that kept him out of the final Test against New Zealand but a well-rested Anderson is fit and raring to go against India.

Sam Billings will don the gloves behind the stumps for England in the absence of Ben Foakes. Foakes was in a race against time to be fit for the Test after testing positive for Covid-19 in the middle of the third Test against New Zealand in Headingley.

Billings, who came into the XI as a Covid replacement, has retained his place in the side.

Playing XI: Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Sam Billings (w), Matthew Potts, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach, James Anderson.

A change in leadership at the top – Brendon McCullum has taken over as head coach while Joe Root has handed over the captaincy to Ben Stokes – has breathed a new lease of life into the England Test team, as evidenced by their 3-0 whitewash of World Test Championship holders New Zealand.

While MRF Tyres World No.1 ICC Test batter Joe Root continues to be the backbone of the lineup, others too have started to put their hands up lately. Jonny Bairstow has brought his destructive abilities from white-ball cricket into Tests and has become a game-changer for England in a very short time.

Apart from the incentive of salvaging a draw in the series, England will also be looking to bag crucial WTC23 points. They are currently seventh in the table with a point percentage of 28.89 and will be looking to close the gap with West Indies at sixth.

The final match against India will be a true test of England's new-look red-ball team.

The rescheduled fifth Test between India and England will get underway on Friday at Edgbaston, Birmingham. It would be interesting to see whether England go in with the same approach they had for the series against New Zealand, which saw them winning 3-0. Skipper Ben Stokes on Thursday indicated that his team would not change its approach and would look to do what they know.

"Well, we just beat the best team in the world 3-0, India are obviously a completely different opposition, different dynamic of a team but we are concentrating on ourselves, we understand what we do well but we have also taken into account who we are playing against. Just because the opposition changes does not mean we change," Stokes said during a press conference.

"To be honest, I was not even watching cricket last summer, I did not watch most of it (India-England Tests last summer). But the thing with India is, the way Virat led India in Tests, was something to watch. So yeah, looking forward to the contest again," he added.

When asked whether his side can play a more attacking brand of cricket than what was on offer against New Zealand, Stokes said: "If there's a team that can, it's us."

Stokes also said that his side wants to reshape Test cricket and wants to ensure that the viewers come to watch them play.

"We still obviously know that we need to win this game to draw the series. But you know as I said at the end of last week that, at the moment it is bigger than results, it is bigger than you know, what happens on the field, there is more to it. We obviously want to win every game we play but it is bigger than that," said Stokes.

"I think what we managed to do over the last three weeks is just reshape Test cricket with the way we played. We want people to enjoy us watching play. I think people are enjoying watching us play because they do not know what they are going to get because they do not know how it is going to turn out but they know how we are going to play. I have sort of likened it to the ODI thing we started after 2015 World Cup, everybody wanted to watch us play," he added.

The match should be rained off or pitch should be flat (this is very unlikely). I don't think India can win this match on current form (or mindset). India deserved to win this series... A drawn series will be very unlucky reading for India (just like 2003-04 Australian drawn test series for different reasons though!)

England will try to "operate in the same way" as they have this summer in the rearranged fifth Test against India, says captain Ben Stokes.

The series was postponed last September because of a Covid-19 outbreak in the India party, with England trailing 2-1.

It was part of a run that saw England win one Test in 17, but they go into the match, which starts on Friday at Edgbaston, having beaten New Zealand 3-0 under Stokes and Brendon McCullum.

"It is a bit strange," said Stokes.

"It is different opposition but I made it very clear after the New Zealand series how we're going to do things and we're going to go out there and try to operate in the same way."

England have taken an aggressive approach under Stokes and McCullum, completing chases of 277, 299 and 296 with relative ease to clean sweep world Test champions New Zealand.

Speaking to BBC Test Match Special, Stokes added: "I know the bigger picture of it - trying to draw a series - but every game for me, so early on in my captaincy and trying to rebuild this team, is bigger than results.

"It is bigger than that - it is about Test cricket."

England have made two changes from the seven-wicket win over New Zealand at Headingley, with pace bowler James Anderson replacing Jamie Overton and wicketkeeper Sam Billings - who was a Covid replacement for Ben Foakes during the third Test - keeping the gloves.

Foakes, who was also not able to keep on day three because of a back injury, has not recovered as well as England would have liked.

"Foakes doesn't feel like he could give the best account of himself this week," said Stokes.

"We took the decision out of his hands and said, 'Get yourself better'."

Jonny Bairstow, who hit two fine centuries in the New Zealand series, took the gloves when Foakes was off on day three but Stokes said England want him to just "concentrate on batting".

"Jonny is in the form of his life - he's our best middle-order batter at the moment," he added.

The team is set to feature seven changes from the fourth Test of the original series against India, which the tourists won by 157 runs at The Oval.

India are yet to announce their team, but have confirmed that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will captain in place of opener Rohit Sharma, who tested positive for Covid last week.

"It is a massive achievement - I told my family and they are very proud of me," said Bumrah. "I am very happy that this day has come.

"Nothing changes for me. I am just looking forward to helping the team and trying to understand how the game is heading and try and contribute to the best of my ability.

"I'm always up for more responsibility. I love tough challenges and this is no different. You want to challenge yourself in deep water."

Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant will be India's vice-captain for the match.

Opener KL Rahul will miss the Test after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia.

England XI: Zak Crawley, Alex Lees, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Sam Billings (wk), Matthew Potts, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach, James Anderson.

Our 2 best batters last year were the openers - Rohit and KL. Pujara and Kohli wont do jack. With Bairstow in such murderous form, we dont have any chance of winning this.

Congrats to English fans in advance.

Rohit Sharma will return to captain the side after failing to recover from Covid-19 in time for the rescheduled fifth Test in Edgbaston.

Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant – all members of the Test squad – will be rested for the first T20I of the series, which begins on 7 July, just two days after the scheduled fifth day of the Birmingham Test.

Umran Malik, Dinesh Karthik, Ravi Bishnoi and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have all been retained in the T20I squads following the two-match series against Ireland.

The ODI squad marks the return of veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan, while Mohammed Shami, Mohammad Siraj and Prasidh Krishna are all included.

KL Rahul, currently recovering from a groin injury, misses out from the squads altogether.

It doesn't look like Sanju Samson is anywhere close to Rishabh Pant for a place in t20 team. So, that's a bad news for certain folks over here :)) :inti

Harshal Patel Hits Fifty As India Beat Northamptonshire By 10 Runs In Tour Match

India will enter the upcoming limited overs series against England on a positive note, having beaten Northamptonshire by 10 runs after an impressive display by the bowlers in their second warm-up match on Sunday. India had earlier defeated Derbyshire by seven wickets. After Harshal Patel lifted India from a precarious position to 149 for eight with a 36-ball 54, the visiting bowlers fired in unison to bowl out the county side for 139 with three balls to spare. Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Yuzvendra Chahal and Harshal picked up two wickets apiece as Northamptonshire failed to overcome India's total.

Earlier, asked to bat first, India were off to a disastrous start losing Sanju Samson in the very first delivery of the match, the successful bowler being skipper Joshua Cobb.

One-down bat Rahul Tripathi, too, did not last long but more trouble awaited India as pacer Brandon Glover sent back Suryakumar Yadav to leave the visitors tottering at 8/3 in the third over.

Glover two wickets in quick succession put Northamptonshire on top before a partnership of 43 runs for the fourth wicket steadied the ship. However, Ishan Kishan, having laboured to 16 off 20 balls, fell to left-arm spinner Freddie Heldreich to bring to an end the brief partnership.

That signalled the arrival of Dinesh Karthik and the seasoned campaigner straightaway got into the groove with a few boundaries and a six.

However, Karthik got out after making a brisk 34 off 26 balls as India slipped to 72 for five at the start of the 12th over.

Venkatesh Iyer scored a sedate 20 off 22 balls, but it was Harshal who did the bulk of the scoring when India needed runs to put up a challenging total. Harshal struck five fours and three sixes during his breezy knock.

For Northamptonshire, Brandon Glover was the most successful bowler with figures of 3/33, while there were two wickets apiece for medium pacer Nathan Buck and Heldreich.

Brief scores: India: 149/8 in 20 overs (Harshal Patel 54, Dinesh Karthik 34; Brandon Glover 3/33) Northamptonshire: 139 all out in 19.3 overs (Saif Zaib 33; Avesh Khan 2/16, Yuzvendra Chahal 2/25).

New white-ball captain Jos Buttler says England will continue to be "really aggressive and not afraid of failure" under his leadership.

Former vice-captain Buttler, 31, took over from Eoin Morgan last week after the 50-over World Cup-winning skipper retired from international cricket.

His first series in charge is three Twenty20 internationals against India, starting at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday.

"There's not much at the moment needs changing," Buttler told BBC Sport.

"I see the game in exactly the same way as Eoin."

Buttler will work alongside newly-appointed Australian head coach Matthew Mott, with the pair looking to build a side capable of winning this year's T20 World Cup in Australia and defending the 50-over World Cup in India in October 2023.

England were beaten by New Zealand in the semi-finals of last year's T20 World Cup, which was won by Australia.

"I want us to play in exactly the same fashion - to be really positive, really aggressive and not afraid of failure," added wicketkeeper Buttler.

"There's a clear identity that is going to outlast Eoin, to outlast me and will outlast whoever follows on from me as well.

"I don't see that ever going backwards, I see some people just trying to take that even further forwards."

After a dismal 2015 World Cup, England adopted an aggressive approach under Morgan that led them to the 2019 title and breaking the one-day international record total three times, most recently in hitting 498-6 against the Netherlands last month.

That positivity has now been taken on by the Test team under new captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, resulting in four successive victories by chasing totals over 275, including England's record pursuit of 378 to beat India on Tuesday.

Buttler, who was dropped from the Test side after a poor Ashes series in Australia, said Stokes' team have been "a hell of a lot of fun" to watch, but added he is focused on the limited-overs sides.

"It sounds like they've reminded themselves about just what an honour and privilege it is and how much fun they can have playing cricket, and not worrying too much about the results," he said.

"And actually the results have come by doing that.

"If anything it's just a reminder for the white-ball teams that that's exactly the way we want to play cricket as well."

After India, England also have series against South Africa, Pakistan and Australia to hone their starting XI for their T20 World Cup opener against Afghanistan on 22 October.

None of the Test squad will feature against India, with the schedule also meaning England will not always be able to field a first-choice side in the build-up to the tournament.

"Expectations are high for us as a group and the T20 World Cup is not far away, so we want to build towards that," said Buttler

"Through availability in the schedule and a few injuries there's going to be chances for players to put their hand up, which is exciting because that develops the strength of the squad."

India Test players Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja will be available from the second T20 onwards, while captain Rohit Sharma is set to return after Covid-19 meant he missed the Edgbaston Test.

Buttler said he is expecting a "really tough challenge" from India as there is "so much strength in depth and talent" in their squad.

He added: "They're well accustomed to playing lots of T20 cricket, they know the format very well. I expect a great series."

Rohit said he was "struggling" for a couple of days because of Covid but is "excited" for the T20 series now he is healthy again.

"We want to keep one eye on the T20 World Cup but we also want to get the job done here as well," he added.

"England are going to be a very challenging team for us."
