New Zealand vs India: Tried Spacing It Out: BCCI Official On Virat Kohli's Comments On Busy Schedule

The Indian players are mostly on the road these days thanks to the hectic calendar and no sooner did they play their last ODI game against Australia in Bengaluru on Sunday, they flew off to New Zealand for the next series the very next day. The planning hasn't gone down well with skipper Virat Kohli and he wants the BCCI to rethink their travel plans in the future. But BCCI officials feel he should have communicated the same to them rather than speaking about it in the media.

Speaking to IANS, a BCCI functionary said that while Kohli does have the right to make his views known, the board does try to make the best possible travel plans keeping the interest of the players in mind.

"He has every right to raise a point, but to be fair, all travel plans are made keeping in mind the interest of the players. If you see, we tried to space it out as much as we could post the World Cup when we played at home and the boys were also given a break during Diwali.

"It honestly made more sense to be flying to Auckland from Bengaluru than the team regrouping after a break," the functionary said.

When contacted, a BCCI official said that the planning was done during the tenure of the Committee of Administrators and if Kohli or anyone in the team had an issue, they could have easily spoken to the Secretary rather than in the media.

"The schedule was tight, but I don't see what the problem is when it is a schedule made under the Committee of Administrators and supervised by the CEO. Should this issue not have been raised with them considering the fact that they seemed to be on each other's speed dial?

"Even if he would have raised the issue with the BCCI Secretary, it could have been addressed. While Kohli is free to express himself the way he wishes to, there's a system that needs to be followed for resolution of issues and the core of the system is communication," the official told IANS.

Addressing the media ahead of the opening T20I at Eden Park, Kohli said that it was coming to a scenario where players were landing at the stadium from one series to the other.

"It's getting closer and closer to landing at the stadium straight. That's how compressed the gap has become. This kind of travelling to a place that is seven and a half hours ahead of IST is difficult to adjust immediately. Hopefully, this will be taken into consideration in the future," he pointed. "But this is the year of the World Cup and every T20 is important. So we can't lose our focus."

Kane williamson is a great T20 captain. Proved in both seasons in the IPL. Very good at working with limited resources. Kohli on the other hand is very bad working with even a powerful line up.

I don't see any problem with kohli here. He is a leader to build future Indian cricket.

New Zealand v India: Black Caps on the cusp of worst losing streak in eight years

New format, new opponents, same results.

After losing the first two matches of their Twenty20 series against India, the Black Caps have now suffered five defeats in a row across all formats – their worst run since 2016.

If they lose their sixth straight match at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Wednesday, it will be their worst run since 2012, when they struggled away against the West Indies and India.

Seven losses would put them in a place they haven't been since the start of 2005, when they were beaten in a Twenty20 (the first ever), five ODIs, and a test by Australia.

After that comes their worst losing run this decade, which took place way back in 2002, when they suffered nine defeats in a row to Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the West Indies.

In playing three of world cricket's superpowers, England, Australia and India, back to back, the Black Caps gave themselves an almighty challenge this summer.

After a solid start against England, where they lost the Twenty20 series only in a super over, then won and drew the two tests, they have fallen away.

First there were the three test losses against Australia, played over a four-week span where Kiwi fans ran out of things to pick apart, and almost everyone's head was called for, justifiably or not.

Then there were Friday night and Sunday night at Eden Park, where India comprehensively outplayed the Black Caps, first in chasing down 203 with an over to spare, then in restricting them to 132 before settling in for a comfortable run chase.

The series now shifts down State Highway 1, which is devoid of roadworks for the first time in seemingly forever, but while that will make for a smooth ride, there will be plenty on the players' minds.

Tim Seifert acknowledged on Monday morning at the team hotel that it had been "hard to sleep" the night before, with the match, which finished just after 11pm, still fresh in his mind.

But even though the Black Caps' backs are against the wall, he said they were still full of confidence with regard to the bigger picture.

"We're not playing our best at the moment, but there's still 20-odd games until the World Cup [in Australia in October], so that's the huge thing that we're looking for, that buildup to the World Cup, but we also want to do well in this series as well."

To post 203 in the opening match, the Black Caps needed career-best efforts (in terms of strike rate) from Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor, who both failed to score at anywhere near a run a ball in the second contest, where India only conceded 12 boundaries, nine of which came in the first nine overs.

If the Black Caps bat first again on Wednesday, they will likely need to score in excess of 180 to give their bowlers a chance, against a team that has made clear its desire to chase, and if they bat second, they are likely to be chasing plenty.

With their bowling attack set to receive a massive boost once Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson return, the long-term questions in this format surround their batting lineup, which can't afford to fail again.

Seifert made a useful 26-ball 33 on Sunday, but he said it could sometimes be a case of batsmen trying to do too much out in the middle.

"Especially when they're bowling well. You try to get them off their line and you do start overthinking it and then they miss and you're out of position to execute when they miss because they were bowling so well and you were trying to hit their good ball.

"That's T20 cricket as well. Sometimes it's going at 100 per cent, but sometimes you've got to step away and take a breath and reassess."

Black Caps' worst losing streaks this century

New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill was caught letting out a swear word in Hindi on live television after the second T20I between hosts New Zealand and India at Eden Park in Auckland on Sunday. India beat New Zealand by seven wickets to secure a 2-0 lead in the five-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series between the two teams. After the game, India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal took the microphone from Star Sports anchor Jatin Sapru and with it walked towards Guptill, who was chatting with India opener Rohit Sharma.

Chahal greeted the pair by saying "what's up boys" but not in his wildest dreams would he have expected the response that he got from the New Zealand opener.

Guptill responded to Chahal by saying, "Kya hai G****?". Rohit Sharma, standing next to him, was left in splits while a shell-shocked Chahal told the New Zealander that they were live on television.

India won both the T20Is that were played at Eden Park in Auckland. In the first match, India chased down the 204-run target with an over to spare. India overhauled New Zealand's challenging total with ease as KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer scored fine half-centuries to give India a 1-0 lead.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli anchored the innings in the middle overs with a 32-ball 45, allowing the other batsmen to flourish from the other end.

In the second match, Indian bowlers took centrestage as some fine bowling helped them restrict the hosts to 132 for five. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer again got the job done for India in the chase after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had been dismissed early.

While Rahul (57 not out off 50 balls) scored his second consecutive fifty of the series, and 11th overall of his T20I career, Iyer fell six runs short of his half-century.New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill was caught letting out a swear word in Hindi on live television after the second T20I between hosts New Zealand and India at Eden Park in Auckland on Sunday. Seems like Martin Guptill knows Desi Slungs due to IPL

After losing the 3rd T20I against India (6 in a row), this is NZ's worst run since 2012, when they struggled away against the West Indies and India.

Virat Kohli: "I thought at one stage, we were gone. The way Kane was batting, on 95. Feel bad for him, I know what it's like to play those knocks when things don't go your way. Last ball we had a discussion, we had to hit the stumps because if you don't, it's a single anyway. Rohit was outstanding, both in our innings, and the last two balls as well. We knew if he got one hit, the bowler was under pressure immediately. We'll try to [win 5-0] but it's important to give a couple of the others some game time as well. We want to see how they do in these conditions, someone like Washington Sundar, or Saini."

So he thinks Saini is the backup of Shardul? :9:

Saini is backup of Shami

Shardul is backup of Bhuvi and Chahar

Virat Kohli: "Feel bad for him, I know what it's like to play those knocks when things don't go your way.

Reminds me of Kohli's innings against Windies in the 2016 wc, he did everything one could possibly do, hell he was even the best bowler from our side in that match, we still lost.

rest shami as well. I think in the test matches shami will terrorize n.z. just as much as bumrah will.

But Thakur is not good enough to be backup of anybody ahead of Saini.
Shardul can bat a lil bit. And Saini I don't think has any better T20 skills than him. So they are looking him against the role Bhuvi was playing earlier. We can’t have too many bowlers who can’t hold a bat in T20.

Thakur is not fit to play international cricket neither is Chahar. They are lobby selections like Mohit Sharma

Why Chahar? In the last 2 years he is the second most economical fast bowler behind Bumrah in T20. Good new ball bowler in the absence of Bhuvi.

When you bat first , opposition will definitely target Thakur.

New look ODI pace attack | Latham fit, Nicholls to continue opening

The BLACKCAPS pace-bowling depth will be tested against India in the upcoming ODI series with three fresh call-ups for the three-game series, starting February 5 in Hamilton.

Auckland Aces opening bowler Kyle Jamieson has been included in the one-day squad for the first time and could make his BLACKCAPS debut, while Northern Districts quick Scott Kuggeleijn and Hamish Bennett from the Wellington Firebirds return after last playing ODIs in Ireland in 2017.

Trent Boult (broken left-hand), Lockie Ferguson (right-calf strain) and Matt Henry (broken left-thumb) are unavailable because of injury, however Tom Latham has recovered from his broken left finger and has been included in the 13-player squad.

Colin de Grandhomme, Jimmy Neesham and spinner Mitchell Santner are the all-rounders, while Henry Nicholls will continue opening the batting with Martin Guptill.

Northern Districts leg-spinner Ish Sodhi has been included for the first ODI at Seddon Park, before being released to play for New Zealand A in the second First Class match against India A in Christchurch, starting February 7.

The series will be the first for the BLACKCAPS one-day team since the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and coach Gary Stead said his side are under no illusions about the task ahead.

“It’s always a tremendous occasion taking on India and we’ve seen from the T20 series they’re clearly as strong as ever,” he said.

“Tim Southee has an important job leading our new look pace attack, which has a huge opportunity against some of the very best batsmen in the world.

“While the bowling line-up has a fresh look, the batting is very settled and we’ll likely have the same top eight batsmen from the World Cup finals.

“Jimmy and Colin continue as the pace-bowling all-rounders after strong campaigns in England and they will offer us plenty of firepower and versatility.

“Henry will remain at the top of the order after impressing in the opportunities he’s had. He’s been in good form opening for Canterbury in the latest rounds of the Ford Trophy with a hundred and a half-century to his name.

“It’s great to have Tom fit so we can call on his experience behind the stumps and in the middle order.”

BLACKCAPS ODI squad

Kane Williamson (Northern Districts) (c)

Hamish Bennett (Wellington Firebirds)

Tom Blundell (Wellington Firebirds)

Colin de Grandhomme (Northern Districts)

Martin Guptill (Auckland Aces)

Kyle Jamieson (Auckland Aces)

Scott Kuggeleijn (Northern Districts)

Tom Latham (Canterbury) (wk)

Jimmy Neesham (Wellington Firebirds)

Henry Nicholls (Canterbury)

Mitchell Santner (Northern Districts)

Ish Sodhi (Northern Districts) (1st ODI)

Tim Southee (Northern Districts)

Ross Taylor (Central Stags)

Stead also provided an update on the injured BLACKCAPS.

“The three players have been rehabbing well but unfortunately weren’t close enough to be considered for this squad.

“Trent Boult is progressing nicely and we are confident he will be ready for the two Test matches against India.

“Matt Henry is back bowling at training however isn’t at the point of being able to bat or field fully, while Lockie Ferguson is on track to play in the Ford Trophy for the Auckland Aces in the near future.”

The BLACKCAPS ODI squad assembles in Hamilton on Monday February 3 ahead of the opening game of the series at Seddon Park on the Wednesday.

The three-match series then moves to Auckland for a Saturday encounter at Eden Park before finishing at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

Hardik Pandya, the India all-rounder, has been ruled out of the entirety of India's tour of New Zealand.

The 26-year-old, who underwent back surgery in October, had hoped to recover in time for the two-Test series in New Zealand. However, his rehabilitation has taken longer than expected, and the all-rounder has not been cleared to make a comeback this month.

"Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against New Zealand. He will be under rehab at the National Cricket Academy until he regains full match fitness," BCCI said in a release on Saturday, 1 February.

Pandya was initially drafted into India A's squad for the tour of New Zealand, but was later withdrawn for precautionary measures. He was hopeful of making his international comeback mid-way through the senior team's tour, but those hopes have been dashed.

"We thought this was the right time because even if I take four months, I will be coming back before the New Zealand series, mid-way actually. That was the plan that I play some international games, the IPL and then the World T20. The biggest concern was the World T20 which, touch wood, is now in place," Pandya had told the IANS earlier this year.

India play a three-match ODI series against South Africa at home after the New Zealand tour.

What is mediocre Pant doing between legends?

Indian playing XI for 1st ODI:-

Rohit
Shaw
Kohli
Iyer
Rahul (wkt)
R Pant/M Pandey
Jaddu
Thakur/Saini
Kuldeep
Shami
Bumrah

They may go with a sixth bowling option so maybe Jadhav plays in place of Pant or Manish Pandey.

Rohit Sharma to miss New Zealand ODIs and Tests

In a blow to India, limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma was on Monday ruled out of the upcoming ODI and Test series against New Zealand after sustaining a calf injury during the fifth T20 International (T20I) in Mount Maunganui. Rohit retired hurt after scoring 60 off 41 balls after he pulled his calf muscle while going for a quick single during the match that India won on Sunday. "He is out of the tour. Right now, it's not looking good. The physio is assessing him. We will get to know how bad it is but he is not taking any further part in the series," a top BCCI source told PTI on conditions on anonymity.

Not a tour for the Sharmas, this one.

Will Prithwi Shaw and Shubham Gill get a chance or Kohli bring back Rahul in tests?

BLACKCAPS captain Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the first two ODIs against India as he continues to battle an inflamed AC joint in his left-shoulder.

The injury occurred while fielding in the third T20 International in Hamilton last Wednesday and prevented him playing the final two matches of the series.

Team physio Vijay Vallabh said they would continue to cautiously manage Williamson’s return to play.

“Kane has had an X-ray scan which cleared him of anything serious, but it’s best for his recovery that he avoids aggravating the joint for the next few days,” Vallabh said.

“He will continue his fitness training sessions throughout the week and will start batting again on Friday with the prospect of being available for game three next Tuesday.”

Selector Gavin Larsen confirmed in-form Auckland Aces left-hander Mark Chapman would join the squad in Hamilton today.

“It’s disappointing for Kane, but with so much important cricket still ahead this summer we must take a safety first approach,” Larsen said.

“It’s great to welcome Mark back into the one-day unit off the back of consecutive centuries for New Zealand A against a strong India A side.

“Mark’s a versatile player who can cover multiple batting positions and his fielding is a real upshot to have in the squad.”

With Williamson ruled out, Tom Latham will captain the side after last leading the ODI team against Bangladesh in Dunedin a year ago.

Shaw, Gill selected. KL Rahul dropped.
Kl should've been given one test at least. The form that he is in could be useful. Agreed, Shaw & Gill deserve chances too. But they can wait for 1 test, as only 2 tests are being played. And no test matches coming up in the near future till November.

Indian cricket team will be playing too many money-spinning/less important ODI series till November this year.

Good to see saha. Still remember parthiv Patel in NZ & Aus 2003/4 not being good behind the stumps. As for 5th bowler, hope hanuma vihari does better and even pujara/Kohli could roll 4-5 overs for change over/ rest to bowlders. Overall 10-12 overs of workload could be taken off the regular bowlers.

India opener Prithvi Shaw has been recalled to their Test squad ahead of the two-match series against New Zealand. He comes in as a like-for-like replacement for Rohit Sharma, who has been ruled out of the tour with a calf injury.

Shaw, who has played just two Tests so far, has already impressed in his nascent international career. The 20-year-old has two fifty-plus scores in three Test innings, including a hundred on debut against West Indies in 2018. He averages 118.50 in the format, having scored 237 runs across two Tests.

Shaw registered impressive performances in India A's recent tour of New Zealand, smashing a 150 against New Zealand XI before notching up two 40-plus scores in the List A games against New Zealand A. He returns to the Test squad after more than 15 months: he first picked up an ankle injury ahead of India's tour of Australia in 2018-19 and was then handed a doping ban.

Shubman Gill, Shaw's India U19 teammate, retains his place in the side. The 20-year-old was excellent in India A's first-class game against New Zealand A in Christchurch, scoring of 83 and 204* across two innings. He has not made his Test debut so far, but has an average of 71.32 in first-class cricket.

Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has been left out of the squad, while right-arm pacer Navdeep Saini has been called up. He was a part of India's Test squad on their tour of West Indies last year, but could not break into the playing XI.

The visitors have decided to go with two frontline spinners in the experienced R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, with Hanuma Vihari coming in as the part-time spin option. The rest of the squad have retained their spot, with Virat Kohli at the helm and Ajinkya Rahane as his deputy.

Senior pacer Ishant Sharma has retained his place in the squad, but his availability is subject to fitness. MRI scans had recently revealed that Sharma has incurred a grade 3 ankle tear, and he will only be picked if he regains full-match fitness before the Tests.

Squad: Virat Kohli (c), Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Wriddhiman Saha, Rishabh Pant, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Bumrah, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Navdeep Saini, Ishant Sharma (subject to fitness)

India captain Virat Kohli said that Prithvi Shaw is “definitely going to start”, on the eve of the first ODI against New Zealand, confirming that the 20-year-old Mumbai batsman is in line to become India’s 230th cricketer in the 50-over format.

Shaw is just coming off a major roadblock in his young international career. After making a century on Test debut against West Indies in October 2018, Shaw was forced to forego the tour of Australia, after he twisted his ankle during a warm-up match. He was subsequently slapped with a doping ban, which meant his international career has failed to take off after those two Tests against West Indies.

Now, with Rohit Sharma out of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, and the two Tests that follow it, the coast is clear for Shaw to make a return to the squad and Kohli said as much when he declared that Shaw, who is uncapped in white-ball cricket, will take the opener’s slot, with KL Rahul set to be groomed for the middle order.

"We are looking to stick to the same plan. KL will bat in the middle order. We want him to get accustomed to that role and keep as well," Kohli said. "We understand it's an unfortunate situation that Rohit can't be a part of this series. When you talk about one-day cricket and T20 cricket, and Test cricket now, he's one guy who's always on the list first. The impact he's had is there for everyone to see. But the thing is that we don't have any one-day tournaments to look forward to. It's, if anything, an ideal time for him to go away and rectify this as soon as he can and come back.

"He played the T20I series, so from the team's balance point of view heading into the World Cup year, it doesn't really hamper the combination as far as the T20s are concerned. And in one-day cricket, whoever steps in for him – Prithvi's definitely going to start – and whoever the replacement – Agarwal – is, we'll ask for an opener."

Kohli also dismissed any notions that India will look at the one-day series as an extension of the T20 format and approach it like they would a T20 game. "We have had five T20s already, it's not that we don't have a lot of T20 cricket,” he said. "We have IPL as well, which is going to be a month and a half of T20 cricket. So we will probably utilise that. IPL is probably the most competitive tournament you can ask for as a collective and guys will look to get into that frame of mind in that tournament and not this early in a 50-over format because you don't want to play in a different manner.

"You have to respect the format, you have to play according to the pace of the 50-over game. These things are all about creating good habits for different formats and then being able to switch between them. So no, we are not looking at this series as preparation for T20 World Cup. IPL is going to be the right platform for that."

Northern Districts leg-spinner Ish Sodhi and Central Stags pace-bowler Blair Tickner have been called into the BLACKCAPS ODI squad ahead of Tuesday’s final match against India at Bay Oval.

The pair have been withdrawn from the New Zealand A side ahead of the final day of their First-Class game against India A at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Christchurch.

Sodhi and Tickner will instead link up with the BLACKCAPS in Mount Maunganui for training this afternoon, with several players’ fitness still being monitored.

Scott Kuggeleijn (viral), Tim Southee (gastro) and Mitchell Santner (gastro) continue to recover from illness, while regular captain Kane Williamson will test his left-shoulder injury at training before a call is made.

Auckland Aces left-arm pace-bowler Ben Lister will join New Zealand A as a replacement this morning in Christchurch.

test team looks real strong. wish we added gill in though.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson on Tuesday hoped for a full-strength squad for the Test series against India after managing the limited-overs leg with injury-ravaged outfits.

Williamson was all smiles after his side completed a 3-0 sweep of India in the ODI series with a five-wicket victory in the final game, avenging its hammering in the preceding five-match T20 series.

“We are expecting all of those guys to be fit for the first Test and they’ve been tracking nicely. It’s an exciting opportunity against one of the best sides in the world,” Williamson said.

“It’s part and parcel of the game that you get guys who get injuries. We’ve obviously had a lot of that in recent times to deal with but there have not been any excuses.

“Guys have come in to try and play the roles that they’re given to the best of their ability and learnt a heap along the way,” he added.

The skipper said that the limited-overs’ leg would not have much bearing on the ensuing two Tests, though his side can still look to carry a bit of confidence from the 3-0 ODI series whitewash of the visitor.

“Obviously, a different side and a different format. Throughout a series you’re always trying to touch on areas as a group. It’s a different format but there are some parts guys will get confidence from going into that series.

“The focus does change but I know the guys are looking forward to that series.”

The Test series starts in Wellington on February 21.

Williamson praised his side’s effort in inflicting on India its first ODI series whitewash since 1989.

“Although we were 2-0 going up into this, there were certainly those expectations coming into this game to try and implement those things and also learn from those past performances that we had against India who are obviously one of the best sides in the world.

“It was an outstanding effort and a very clinical effort from the guys and I think the way we fought back with the ball was outstanding and the partnerships throughout that chase were brilliant as well.”

New Zealand overturned a disappointing T20I series whitewash to secure a clean sweep of the three-match ODI series.

“It’s obviously disappointing when you lose. You always want to win. But there were a heap of good things in the T20I series. We all saw the fine margins that were out there in terms of the results.”

Williamson said it put the national side in a good space, despite the 2023 World Cup being quite far away.

“That’s such a long way away (the 2023 World Cup). Then you have injuries and you bring guys in. There were some brilliant opportunities for guys who grew throughout this campaign and played some major roles as well.

“Injuries aren’t ideal but there are still silver linings that guys come in and get opportunities to develop their games against one of the best teams in the world,” he said.

Williamson said New Zealand played smart cricket in the series and put pressure on the opposition. The Kiwis blunted Indian bowling attack’s threat with ease in this series, in particular Jasprit Bumrah, who went wicketless in the three ODIs.

“We know that Bumrah is a world-class bowler in all of the formats. So he’s a threat when he has a ball in his hand but I think there’s too much to look into it. He’s obviously back into his cricket after a period of time off as well. But from what I saw, he’s bowling very nicely.”

Young again, as New Zealand XI named

Will Young pushed his injury-shortened 2019 programme further into the background today when he was named in the New Zealand XI to play India in a three-day match at Seddon Park, starting tomorrow.

The Central Stags batsman was called into the BLACKCAPS squad for the eventually-abandoned third Test at Christchurch last summer and soon after injured his shoulder in a training accident, the surgery from which necessitated him taking the best part of eight months out of the game.

However, Young will further develop his comeback campaign tomorrow, having already enjoyed an outing for the Stags, and two first-class games for New Zealand A against India A – during which time he scored a half-century and spent an encouraging amount of time at the crease.

Joining Young will be three other emerging batsmen: Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra and Henry Cooper, all of whom have been amongst the runs this season in various competitions.

Allen scored a century for a New Zealand XI against the touring England team at Cobham Oval, Cooper has impressed for Northern Districts in both the Plunket Shield and Ford Trophy, and Ravindra scored his maiden list A century for the Firebirds, while also featuring for New Zealand A.

Players from the Auckland Aces, Canterbury, and Otago Volts Ford Trophy squads were not considered for selection as they are involved in the Elimination Final and Final, and both matches cut across the NZ XI match. Allen was not included in the Aces Ford Trophy side for this weekend.

Given the three-dayer is considered a warm-up match for India and not an official first-class fixture, both teams will have the option of playing more than 11 players.

NZ XI: Daryl Mitchell (Northern Knights) (c); Finn Allen (Auckland Aces); Tom Bruce (Central Stags); Dane Cleaver (Central Stags); Henry Cooper (Northern Knights); Scott Kuggeleijn (Northern Knights); James Neesham (Wellington Firebirds); Rachin Ravindra (Wellington Firebirds); Tim Seifert (Northern Knights); Ish Sodhi (Northern Knights); Blair Tickner (Central Stags); Will Young (Central Stags). 13th men: Jake Gibson (Northern Knights, Friday), and Scott Johnston (Northern Knights, Saturday and Sunday).

Hanuma Vihari’s gutsy hundred and the seasoned Cheteshwar Pujara’s 93 were the bright spots in an otherwise dreadful batting performance by India on the first day of their warm-up game against New Zealand XI here.

All the three designated openers - Mayank Agarwal (1), Prithvi Shaw (0) and Shubman Gill (0) - failed the seam and bounce test, falling cheaply.

With skipper Virat Kohli opting for an intense net session over the warm-up game, India managed only 263 all-out. Apart from Vihari (101 retired) and Pujara, no other batsman was able to score even 20 runs on a Seddon Park track that had liberal grass covering.

What would worry the Indian team management was failure of all the three openers. Shaw and Gill were undone by the extra bounce while Agarwal failed to counter to seam movement.

New Zealand pacer Scott Kuggeleijn (3/40) got the ball to rear up awkwardly from length during his first spell and Shaw’s dismissal was the ugliest one.

Kuggeleijn, who was hitting the deck hard, got one into Shaw’s rib-cage leaving the batsman in no position to duck. The eyes were not on the ball with the bat face closed. The awkward hit ballooned up and was taken by Rachin Ravindra at short leg.

Agarwal, who has been in horrible form of late, then edged an away going delivery to keeper Dane Cleaver behind the stumps.

Another classic Test match dismissal was Gill, who was given the No.4 slot in absence of skipper Kohli.

The snorter from Kuggeleijn grew big on Gill, who tried defending but the thick edge flew to gully making it 5 for 3 in no time.

Ajinkya Rahane (18) was out by the end of the first hour, edging one to the slips, before Vihari and Pujara stemmed the rot and got a 195-run stand.

Once they saw of Kuggeleijn’s first spell and the skiddy Blair Tickner, batting became easy in the second and third session.

Once the spinners were in operation, Pujara pulled Ish Sodhi over long leg for a six while Vihari also hit three down the ground off left-arm spinner Ravindra.

Pujara was finally out in the final session trying to hook Gibson even as Vihari got to the three-figure mark.

India lost the last six wickets for 30 runs but what stuck out like a sore thumb was another shot selection by Rishabh Pant when he tried an ugly hoick off Ish Sodhi’s bowling only to be caught by the man at extra cover.

Not getting a single match in the limited-overs series must have dented Pant’s confidence as he threw away his wicket when he could have scored a good 35 to 40 runs without any pressure.

Brief Scores:

India: 263 all out in 78.5 overs (Hanuma Vihari 101, Cheteshwar Pujara 93; Scott Kuggeleijn 3/40, Ish Sodhi 3/72)

India have made a big mistake by leaving KL Rahul out. Shaw and Gill failed in the tour games. Cricinfo ran an article about Vihari opening lol. Out of these 3 I would go with Shaw. But KL should have been selected.

Indian bowling attack still can't figure out how to bowl to tailenders.

Can't even get I.sodhi out. I think the same will happen what happened in England a year ago.
Matches will be very close but The tailenders will win it for NZ. 2-0 to NZ

Same happened in Australia, Australia would have won in Adelaide, tailenders bought the match so close.

No, when the score was 161-7 Shami already picked up 3 (seifert, cooper, neesham)
Saini picked his 2nd when the score was 213-9.

Ah yes, not sure how I got confused.

Shami got 3 while Saini got 2. I had double checked before commenting at that time yet I got wrong, really not sure how.

I won't worry too much about Shaw and Gill dsmissal in the first innings. Atypical dismissal in these conditions. Both are very good short ball players. very strong off the backfoot.

Senior India fast bowler Ishant Sharma on Saturday passed the fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and will now join the team in New Zealand for the two-match Test series starting February 21.

“Yes, he (Ishant) has passed the fitness test and will join the team in New Zealand,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Ishant is expected to fly out to Wellington on Sunday for the first Test.

On January 21, Ishant -- four short of becoming only the second Indian fast bowler after Kapil Dev to reach the landmark of 100 Tests -- twisted his right ankle while playing for Delhi in a Ranji Trophy match against Vidarbha at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here.

Eat, sleep, rehab, repeat: Dhawan, Ishant, Pandya spice up NCA recovery stint

The pacer, based upon an MRI scan, had suffered a Grade 3 tear in his ankle, and been advised six weeks of rest and rehabilitation. Later for rehab, Ishant went to NCA and was named in the New Zealand Test squad subject to fitness clearance.

The 31-year-old has been an integral part of India’s best-ever pace attack and will strengthen it further when he joins Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Navdeep Saini in New Zealand.

The last time India toured New Zealand in 2013-14, Sharma was the leading wicket-taker with 15 wickets from two Tests.
