What's new

India tour of South Africa 2018

Part and parcel of game. Benching and injury happens. Rarely we see best teams from both sides. There is always issues with injury or management not playing some one.

Only for ODI WC and CT will get full strength teams. JAMODI's are just JAMODI's !

He is new player. Hardly any found out situation here.

Agreed, but it is too early to give him captaincy. He may be captaincy material, but hammering from Ind may lose his confidence and career for good !

Dean Elgar is the guy who will be leading the SA test side after 2 years.

For once thought, Qdk would get the captaincy role in Odi side.Surprises there.

Amla said no. Qdk's poor form doesn't deserve captaincy.

Maybe Markham has shown some good captaincy skills in his past games somewhere so he was given an opportunity immediately. The management must have seen something. Let's see how he does.

Later don't cry when people disregard Kohli's and Sachins stats in Jamodi whatever's :D

Buddy I joined PP yesterday...Please don't be judgmental and generalise opinion. I care only WC and CT. Pak win in CT is really good and more valuable than even if Ind wins this series 6-0 with or without AB. I always prefer WC, CT and Test wins more than any JAMODI's.

Look Qdk won't be getting this role for an year. He is a replacement for Faf and once Faf is back, he will take the captaincy role himself. He isnt getting a permanent role. So, he can take that.

How was he found out? Did the Indian bowlers expose some weaknesses or does 'found out' mean he had a poor series? He's only just made his debut and looks a pretty good player to me.

He played vs Zim & BD and filed up runs and Pommi and other SA commies hyped him like anything. when faced against good bowlers his average was around 20's. Now he will be ODI captain :facepalm

Aiden Markram has been appointed as the stand-in captain of the Standard Bank Proteas for the remainder of the Momentum One-Day International (ODI) series against India. Markram replaces Faf du Plessis, who has been ruled out of the series due to a fractured finger.

The 23-year-old captained South Africa ‘A’ and the Multiply Titans teams this season, and also led the South Africa U19 squad to ICC U19 World Cup glory in 2014. Cricket South Africa convenor of selectors, Linda Zondi, says the appointment is in line with their plans to grow a new group of leaders within the squad.

“Part of our plans is to make sure we continue to look forward to our vision of 2019 and thereafter,” he said at SuperSport Park on Saturday. “ Part of that plan is to develop those young leaders we have identified. It is unfortunate that we have to do this because of an injury to Faf but this is an opportunity to give Aiden a run, he fits into the goals that we are trying to achieve.

“ We have identified Aiden since SA U19, and he has gone on to captain South Africa A and the Multiply Titans,” Zondi continued. “We are aware that he is new to the ODI setup, and there will be pressure, but that comes with the territory of captaining an international side. We are however confident that he has the right set of skills and temperament to lead this side successfully.”

Markram says he is honoured to be given an opportunity to captain, an area of the game he thrives on. He says he will seek advice and support from other seniors players within the squad, along with Du Plessis, who has taken him under his wing in recent months.

“It’s a big honour,” he said. “ As a little boy growing up, captaining your country is always the big dream. It’s unfortunate that Faf is missing out, it is a big loss to the side, but for the selectors to show this type of confidence in me means a lot. It is a humbling experience and we will need to go out there and do it for Faf.

“I really enjoy captaining,” he enthused. “ It’s going to be additional pressure that I have to deal with, but it is good pressure. You get good and bad types of pressures and this is a good one, hopefully I will thrive under it.

“ It can be an intimidating thing,” he said of being a young captain. “ Our culture within the team is so good that it allows a young player like myself to engage with a Hashim Amla, who is a legend of the game. This makes it a lot easier for me, I will keep the seniors players close to my side on the field. It’s going to be a positive challenge to look forward to.

“Faf has taken me under his wing since I have been involved in this environment, we have spoken a lot and this morning at practice he was next to me chatting about plans and passing on worthy advice ahead of the match tomorrow.”

The Proteas trail India 1-0 in the six-match series following the six-wicket loss in Durban on Thursday. Markram says it will be important to bounce back with an all-round improved performance in the second ODI at SuperSport Park on Sunday.

I think it is a good move. Management sees potential, now they try to groom him.

How was he found out? Did the Indian bowlers expose some weaknesses or does 'found out' mean he had a poor series? He's only just made his debut and looks a pretty good player to me.

Front leg moves too far across when he leaves or drives the ball which usually means that on a ball that comes in off the seam (which he will get a lot given he is an opener for SA) his legs get locked and he becomes suspect to lbw (because he brings his bat from the slips to front). Happened vs Zim and India in Cape Town. Worked on this but it also meant he was now unsure of his off-stump and was playing away from his body in Johannesburg. So that is the weakness. Fully expect Hazlewood and Cummins to exploit it unless he makes a drastic change to his technique.

So the reason captaincy was given to him is because he captained his side to U-19 WC win in 2014. Interesting! We dont know how this decision will move ahead but if Markaram succeeds, this will be a masterstroke by SA management.

Will he also captain the test side after Faf? Ahead of Elgar and de Kock? That is there to be seen IMO.

Elgar is 32 as well, no? This is a good decision by CSA. He'll either flourish and become another legend for them or he'll wilt, in which case, they'll be saved from making a bad investment.

Then it's good for you.You guys have done way better than Pakistan in ODI's, You have won
2 World Cups,
2 champions trophies,
1 World Championship in 1985,
6 Asia Cups.

Pakistan have upper hand only in Jamodis...

Not to forget the unbeaten streak in World Cup ODI's. Using your logic, India has done incredibly well inspite of having 'poorer team'. Wow!

Mate I just gave my preference, Pak is good in JAMODI's or WC I don't care. I love cricket, if time permits I even watch Canada vs UAE match !

He is 30. Faf will remain the captain for further two years and then maybe retire. At that point, Elgar will be 32 and de Kock will also be an experienced player. It will be interesting how things will go if the leadership is given to Markaram ahead of Elgar and de Kock who are obviously far more established players in the team.

Media Advisory: De Kock out for 2-4 weeks with wrist injury

Monday, 05 February 2018

Standard Bank Proteas wicket-keeper batsman, Quinton de Kock, has been ruled out of the remainder of the Momentum One-Day International (ODI) series and upcoming T20 International series against India due to a left wrist injury. De Kock sustained the injury during the second ODI against India at SuperSport Park on Sunday, and will require 2-4 weeks to make a recovery.

Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee explained the injury: “ Quinton suffered an extreme blow to the left wrist while batting in the second ODI on Sunday and felt severe pain and discomfort. Further investigation revealed severe bony bruising to the area, with associated swelling around the tendon in the wrist. This type of injury will require between 2-4 weeks to heal, which subsequently rules him out of the remainder of the ODI and T20 series against India. The Cricket South Africa medical team will aim to have him ready for the Test series against Australia starting next month.”

The selectors will not name a replacement for De Kock in the squad.

Better to be away for sometime from firing line, Blessing in disguise; Hope he recovers fast and also gets back his form next time around !

Looks like Bumrah took out De Kock. Maybe a blessing in disguise to the beleaguered South African Team. Good opportunity for Henrich Klaasen to shine. He is a clean hitter. This guy can bat, bowl and keep. He normally bats @ No. 6, so I think Markram has to open with Amla.

De Kock out of the remaining ODIs and T20s

The South Africans are falling like flies.

He was out of form anyway so it's a loss to India :(
Now some posters will wake up to say that Indias victory is because of injury luck.

This is what happens when you battle the GOAT.

Next match- who is next on line? The mighty Hash?

Not good for India

They need opposition team to be competitive and full strength for World Cup preparation.

On a lighter note, looks like Indian bowlers are taking revenge for all our batsman struggles till date from SA quicks :ashwin

Only correct response from all the replies.
We need all the available practice , and weak batting line up of Africa will cause false sense of security in Indian bowlers.

Doomed!! So many injuries !! India will win the series! Damn it!!

Gotta love it when the merciless Claptrap comes back to bite your own team ... arent you loving it how Indian fast bowlers are giving it back and breaking fingers ... On the other hand did you see Kohli spank Rabada for six .... horrible memories ehh ?

Isn't it a good thing then that de Kock is gone now, rather play against someone who isn't in worst form of his life.

That SIX of KG bouncer was awesome in 2nd ODI : kohli2

Standard Bank Proteas fast bowler, Kagiso Rabada, says the squad will need to maintain a positive mindset as they prepare for a series-defining performance in the third Momentum One-Day International (ODI) against India at PPC Newlands on Wednesday. The Proteas trail India 2-0 in the six-match series, and need nothing less than a perfect four out of four wins to lift the series trophy next week.

The marathon winning streak will need to start at a happy hunting ground in PPC Newlands, a venue where they have only lost five out of 33 matches played. Rabada says that, although the squad has put in two below-par performances, the mood and attitude in the camp remains positive and upbeat.

“ It’s important that we keep speaking the right language in the team environment,” he said to the media at Newlands on Tuesday. “ We have to stay positive, we have to get as much momentum as we can from this match, we are definitely not out of it.

“ I wouldn’t say that there are a lot problems,” he said. “ Sometimes when you do badly it seems like a lot more is going wrong than what is really happening. Failure is going to happen, hopefully in the next match we bounce back and get some momentum.

“In an ideal world and an ideal game a lot of players will score the runs and take the wickets and sometimes you will get individual brilliance, we will take either or,” Rabada said when asked what is needed to win. “We are experienced enough to know that sports is a game of ups and downs, anything can happen on the day. We need to go back, see where we are going wrong, calm down and then do the business on the field. We are looking to turn the momentum over.”

The Proteas have been setback by the injuries to AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock, but will have an earlier than expected look at the potential of the next tier of batsmen in their absence. Multiply Titans wicket-keeper batsman, Heinrich Klaasen, is set to debut behind the stumps, and comes in with confidence and form after finishing as the third highest runs-scorer – 522 runs at an average of 52.20- in the recently concluded Momentum One-Day Cup.

“ Injuries give other players a chance,” Rabada explained. “ We have some players who have been doing well at franchise cricket for a while. Those three names who have dropped out of the team, they are irreplaceable at the moment, but this will be an opportunity to widen the pool and for other players to experience international cricket.”

The Indians should demolish SAs as throughly as they can !!!!! Since, if the situation was reversed, SAs would do the same to the Indians !!!!!!!

ABD, Faf & DKock have all been ruled out of the remaining matches on this Indian tour.

We haven’t picked their wrong ’uns: JP Duminy

You are always going to be a little tentative when you are not picking a wrist-spinner’s “wrong ’un”.

That was the view of Proteas left-hander JP Duminy on Wednesday night after the South Africans were once again bamboozled by the Indian spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in a 124-run defeat in the third ODI at Newlands.

After making a promising start in chasing a sizable 304 for victory – set up by Virat Kohli’s marvellous 160 not out – the hosts went from 79/2 to 179 all out, largely due to the brilliance of the Indian spin twins.

Left-arm wrist-spinner Yadav started spinning the web with just his second ball on a warm evening in Cape Town when he left stand-in captain Aiden Markram stranded with a terrific delivery that went away from the right-hander.

Markram, on 32, tried to work it through the leg-side, but was totally flummoxed by the sharp turn, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni completed the stumping.

Right-arm leg-spinner Chahal then got in on the act, ripping the ball past Heinrich Klaasen’s outside edge to trap the debutant Proteas wicket-keeper – who strangely came in at No 4 – lbw for six as the Titans man appeared to play for the googly instead.

But the big wicket was that of Duminy, who stroked his way to a classy 51 – his 25th ODI half-century.

Chahal tossed it up and extracted slow turn from the pitch, but instead of coming forward in positive fashion, Duminy went back on to his stumps to try to flick it off his pads for a single and missed it.

Umpire Adrian Holdstock raised his finger, and even though Duminy’s body language suggested that he knew he was right in front, it looked like he was encouraged to review the decision by David Miller – which he reluctantly did, but to no avail.

Chahal and Yadav ended with four wickets apiece, and left the Proteas batting unit with sleepless nights ahead of Saturday’s Pink ODI at the Wanderers.

Of the 27 South African wickets claimed by bowlers in this series, 21 have been taken by the spinners.

“I think the key is definitely to try and be positive. But unfortunately on a few occasions, we haven’t picked their wrong ’uns,” Duminy said at the post-match press conference on Wednesday night.

“And when you are not picking their wrong ’un, you are not necessarily comfortable at the crease – so you are always going to be a little tentative.

“I think once you become comfortable with picking their deliveries, that’s when you can play with confidence, play with freedom. So, we need to find a way to get that right.”

Duminy felt that the major difference between the Proteas and Indian tweakers was the variety in the speed of their deliveries.

“They have probably assessed the conditions better than us from a bowling perspective. We’ve noticed that they’ve probably bowled a touch slower than our spinners, and I think that’s where they’ve been quite effective,” the 33-year-old said.

“They haven’t bowled the ball full enough for us to get the ball down the ground – that’s where we’ve been successful in South African conditions.

“So, we’ve got to make sure that we have different strategies for that – find a way of not only scoring boundaries, but finding the ones square of the wicket as well.

“I think that’s going to have to be our game plan going forward.”

This is where Indian bowling looks potent. Their wrong uns make their conventional delivery much more dangerous. Between the two they have like 4 different types of basic deliveries. Then in addition to that they bowl a straighter one, slower one, faster one as well. They bowl accurately on a length where you can neither go forward nor back. Good players against spin go back and across and use depth of the crease effectively. You will see that in the IPL against the same spinners

Best thing is this spin duo will play until 2023 wc together, lots of pain coming for opposition teams.

The Standard Bank Proteas will be hoping for some Pink Day inspiration in the fourth Momentum One-Day International (ODI) against India at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium on Saturday. The Proteas have yet to lose an ODI in pink – they have won seven out of seven – which should serve as extra inspiration with the series on the line.

The Pink ODI has become a standout feature on the cricketing calendar, with the players, stakeholders and fans playing their part in raising funds towards fighting breast cancer. This year, the Breast Care Clinic at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg is the new beneficiary, with all funds raised on the day going towards the facility.

Proteas all-rounder, Chris Morris, says the day is special for all the players involved, and has given them extra motivation to preserve their unbeaten record.

“It is a special day for South Africa,” Morris said of the occasion. “We play for a special cause and it is always a great event playing in front of a pink and packed Wanderers. It has been a great tradition playing in pink, it is for a good cause and we are lucky as cricketers to do what we do and be healthy. There are a lot of people in our country suffering with cancer, particularly breast cancer, this day has an emotional side to it and we are glad we can do our bit."

“There is natural pressure but our unbeaten run in pink will obviously add more pressure to it,” he said. “It is do or die, if we lose one more that is the series gone. We will be fighting for every ball and every single run out there. There is pressure but what is cricket without pressure, it would be boring.

AB de Villiers has recovered from a finger injury and returns to inject experience and temperament to the middle order. Morris says De Villiers’ experience on and off the field will be invaluable ahead of the match, along with sharing important tips on how to counter India’s spin threat.

“ AB is AB, apart from what he brings on the field it’s what he also brings off it,” Morris said. “ He brings that calmness and experience. To have a world-class player come back into the side is a special occasion. I enjoy sharing the field with AB, he is one of the best players in the world and one of the best to play for South Africa. For the team he brings so much more than just runs, he brings the AB de Villiers factor.”

India lead the six-match series 3-0.

ABD averages 100.85 from 11 matches at Johannesburg and has scored two of his three hundreds there when playing in pink, including the fastest century in ODI history.

Cape Town - The Proteas have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate in Saturday's fourth ODI against India at the Wanderers, which they won by five wickets to keep the series alive.

Match referee Andy Pycroft imposed the fine after Aiden Markram's side was ruled to be one over short of their target when time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.5.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and players support personnel, which relates to minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 percent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.

As such, Markram, who is standing in as skipper for the injured Faf du Plessis, has been fined 20 percent of his match fee, while his players have received 10 percent fines.

If the Proteas commit another minor over-rate breach in an ODI within 12 months of this offence with Markram as captain, it will be deemed a second offence by Markram and he will face a suspension.

Markram pleaded guilty to the offence after the end of the match and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charge was levied by on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Bongani Jele, third umpire Ian Gould, and fourth umpire Shaun George.

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) today named Warriors batsman Christiaan Jonker and the Multiply Titans duo of fast bowler Junior Dala and wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen as new caps in the Standard Bank Proteas squad for the three-match KFC T20 International Series against India later this month.

JP Duminy has been named as captain in the continued absence through injury of Faf du Plessis.

“With the Sunfoil Test Series against Australia starting only 5 days after the completion of the T20 Series it is necessary for us to rest some of the players who have featured in virtually all our international matches so far this summer,” commented CSA National Selection Panel Convener Linda Zondi.

“These include Hashim Amla and Aiden Markram among the batsmen as well as most of our frontline fast bowlers. AB de Villiers has missed quite a lot of cricket this summer so he will play in the T20 Series.

“We have also decided to give Imran Tahir a break. He remains our first-choice spin bowler in both white ball formats,” explained Zondi, “but we need to give more game time to Tabraiz Shamsi and Aaron Phangiso. The next ICC World Twenty20 is not all that far away in 2020 so it is important that we develop and examine our resources for that tournament.

“Christiaan Jonker has been one of the most explosive finishers in domestic T20 cricket in recent seasons and his selection, together with that of Junior Dala, gives players who have performed well at franchise level the opportunity to show that they can compete at the highest level. Heinrich Klaasen’s recent performance speaks for itself.

“Reeza Hendricks gets another opportunity for the same reason, having been the highest runs scorer in this season’s RAM SLAM Challenge.”

The selectors have also named the South Africa A squad for the tour match against Australia to be played at Sahara Park Willowmoore from February 22 to 24.

Khaya Zondo will captain the squad while the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras duo of Pieter Malan and Zubayr Hamza and Hollywoodbets Dolphins all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy have been chosen at this level for the first time.

“With no franchise cricket scheduled for that weekend it gives another group of fringe players an ideal opportunity to show what they have to offer against top quality opposition,” concluded Zondo.

Standard Bank Proteas T20 squad:
JP Duminy (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras, capt), Farhaan Behardien (Multiply Titans), Junior Dala (Multiply Titans), AB de Villiers (Multiply Titans), Reeza Hendricks (bizhub Highveld Lions), Christiaan Jonker (Warriors), Heinrich Klaasen (Multiply Titans), David Miller (VKB Knights), Chris Morris (Multiply Titans), Dane Paterson (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Aaron Phangiso (bizhub Highveld Lions), Andile Phehlukwayo (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Tabraiz Shamsi (Multiply Titans), Jon-Jon Smuts (Warriors).

South Africa A squad:
Khayalihle Zondo (Hollywoodbets Dolphins, capt), Theunis de Bruyn (VKB Knights), Zubayr Hamza (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Beuran Hendricks (bizhub Highveld Lions), Pieter Malan (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Wiaan Mulder (bizhub Highveld Lions), Senuran Muthusamy (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Duanne Olivier (VKB Knights), Rudi Second (VKB Knights), Malusi Siboto (Multiply Titans), Shaun von Berg (Multiply Titans).

T20 MATCHES BETWEEN INDIA AND SOUTH AFRICA IN HONOUR OF NELSON MANDELA CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS

Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA), Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the Nelson Mandela Foundation will launch the Nelson Mandela Centenary Celebrations at the upcoming International T20 Double-Header featuring the South African Women’s and the South Africa men’s Cricket teams, the Proteas, playing against their Indian counterparts.

The Centenary Celebration programme aims to honour the values and legacy of Former President Nelson Mandela. The double-header will be played at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium on 18 February 2018. The matches will also serve as a celebration of 20 years of diplomatic relations between India and South Africa.

As a further significance, the Nelson Mandela Centenary Celebrations, also coincides with the 125th anniversary of when Mahatma Gandhi was thrown off a train at the Pietmaritzburg Railway station after he refused to move from a whites’ only compartment.

In this 100th year celebration of the values and legacy in sport left by Nelson Mandela, the hosting of India during this 125th anniversary serves as a poignant reminder of Mandela’s values depicted through the unwavering style of leadership which has led many to regard him as a modern Gandhi. Attesting to this style of leadership, when Mandela was conferred with The International Gandhi Peace Prize in 1991, Former President Shri K.R. Narayanan of India once stated, "We are paying tribute to an unusual hero in the Gandhian mould, who personifies the triumph of the human spirit over forces of oppression."

India was the first country to introduce sanctions against the apartheid regime. It was also the first team to tour South Africa in 1992, after South Africa was re-admitted into international cricket after the end of the apartheid era.

The significance behind this celebration in also complimenting the Nelson Mandela centenary cannot go unnoticed. The historic relations between Nelson Mandela and India highlight the extent within which India continued to be of huge support to Nelson Mandela during apartheid as well as during his presidency. This inspiring bond was such that Mandela has often heralded India as “deserving a place among the closest allies whose contribution to the abolishment of apartheid and the making of SA was undeniable as well as immeasurable.”

The Nelson Mandela Centenary Celebrations emphatically promotes the values of Mandela by encouraging citizens to “Be the Legacy” which Nelson Mandela believed and epitomized in changing the world.

The legacy in sport left by Mandela is unequivocal as no one understood the power of sport to provide dignity and hope in the face of state-sponsored oppression better than Madiba.

Affirming the invaluable role of Nelson Mandela in unifying SA, Minister of Sport and Recreation, Thulas Nxesi, highlighted that: “Nelson Mandela became a strong advocate of sports diplomacy in raising South Africa’s reputation and transforming the perception of South Africa from an apartheid state to a democratic nation. The spirit of Madibaness - the Madiba Magic Moment personified through our sports stars’ excellent performances whilst also uniting our country along the way - is a remarkable feature in the history of our sporting achievements. It is, in fact, these Madiba Magic Moments which we regard as a legacy left to the sporting fraternity. After all the nation continues to unite patriotically when an athlete delivers this Madiba Magic Moment.”

The program for the day will see the Momentum Proteas Women team take on India in a T20 clash in the morning, followed by a short ceremonial program highlighting the Nelson Mandela Centenary Celebrations. This will be followed by the KFC T20 International match between the Standard Bank Proteas and India in the afternoon.

Standard Bank Proteas batsman, Hashim Amla, believes the Momentum One-Day International (ODI) series loss to India has exposed key learnings for the squad going forward. The Proteas face India in the sixth ODI at SuperSport Park on Friday, and although it is a dead-rubber, the squad remains motivated to finish the series on a high.

This is the Proteas’ last ODI of the summer – the next series is against Sri Lanka in July – and will be the last opportunity for fringe players to make a claim for spots going forward.

“ At every stage in the series you look at the positives ahead,” he said at SuperSport Park on Thursday. “ After the first match we felt we could come back into the series. We are 4-1 down and now the positive is that we want to end the series on a good note. The coach has a long-term vision and a few ideas up his sleeve, this is the perfect opportunity to execute that. Those are the motivation factors for us, we still have pride in our performances when we represent the country.”

“ There are always positives and learnings to take from it,” he said of the losses. “ We have a few younger guys in the team who might think that one-day cricket is really tough but it can only get easier for them. We haven’t played our best cricket, we played decent cricket in patches but mostly sub-par cricket to what we are used to. Those are the type of experiences we will take, the World Cup is not far away and India is playing their best team, whatever experiences we can take from the six games we have played will be good going forward.”

The Proteas’ batting has been the let-down of the series, but the absence of some experienced batsmen has given Ottis Gibson and the selectors a glimpse of the batting resources. Amla says India’s spinners have been the different between the two sides, but admits the game plans have improved as the series has progressed.

“We have managed to have decent starts, the first 10 overs haven’t generally been dramatic,” he explained. “ Their spinners have played a big role, they are the highest wicket-takers in the series, which isn’t common. They have bowled well and it seems we took the first three games to adjust to them. We have gotten better in the last two games, we played decently against them.

“We have managed to win a lot of games with many different combinations,” he said of the batting. “ Whatever combination we use, be it six batters with two all-rounders, I don’t think it is the fault of the combination. Those of us batting in the top six have not managed to get big hundreds that are match-changing. I feel as a top six we haven’t clicked or gotten the momentum to make it easier. Totals like 270 or 280 are not out of batting reach, I think the combinations we have are fine, we just haven’t scored the runs at the top.”

Chris Morris is available for selection after recovering from a stiff lower back that side-lined him in the fifth ODI.

Standard Bank Proteas T20 captain, JP Duminy, says the squad will start the KFC T20 International Series against India on a clean sheet after the disappointing One-Day International (ODI) series loss on Friday. The injection of some new faces and fresh energy will be a welcome boost, along with a change of format and mindset.

Duminy believes it will be important for the squad to move on from the ODI ‘baggage’ and to target the series with renewed perspective and motivation. The players held a practice session at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Saturday, and given the short turnaround of formats, will have to be positive and on the front foot for the first match at Bidvest Wanderers Stadium on Sunday.

“ The new faces will definitely help,” Duminy said ahead of the match on Saturday. “ We will feed off the freshness of the new faces around. It has been a dismal one-day series for us where India has outplayed us and it is something that we have to take on the chin. It is perhaps a realisation for us that we are far from the finished article going into a World Cup in over a year. It’s a good reality check and each player has to look at how they can improve and make it into that 15-man squad in a year. I am quite excited to be able to lead. The leadership role has brought out the best in me over the last four months with the WSB Cape Cobras.”

Although a number of the regular fast bowlers and senior players have been rested, Duminy says there is a strong emphasis on winning. The squad boasts three new caps in Heinrich Klaasen, Christiaan Jonker and Junior Dala, all of whom have been rewarded for consistent performances on the domestic scene.

“ For us as players, you want to win every series that you represent your country, there is no preference,” Duminy explained. “ T20 cricket will be looked at as a format where you can give players opportunity but it is still an opportunity to represent your country, we want to win. There is no difference of importance according to Test, ODI or T20 cricket. There are a lot of guys making their debut in the squad so it is a great occasion for the squad and environment.”

The match will be played in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s centenary year ( 2018) and both teams will be playing in honour of the legacy he has built for the country and sport in particular. The Proteas will be wearing branded playing tops, and other key activations will be executed in stadia.

The Momentum Proteas will kick-start the double-header Sunday against India at 09h45, followed by the Men’s team at 14h00.

Standard Bank Proteas batsman, AB de Villiers, has been ruled out of the KFC T20 International (T20I) series against India due to a left knee injury. De Villiers suffered a blow to the knee the day before the sixth One-Day International (ODI) at SuperSport Park, and has not recovered sufficiently to take part in the current three-match T20I series.

Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee explained: “AB de Villiers will not be able to take part in the T20 International series against India due to a left knee injury. He suffered a blow to the knee while batting ahead of the sixth ODI, and although he passed a fitness test on Friday, the injury worsened significantly throughout the match. The Cricket South Africa medical team has advised he is given a period of rest and rehabilitation to make a full recovery ahead of the four-match series against Australia starting next month.”

The selectors will not name a replacement.

Virat Kohli limped off the field before India completed another dominant performance over South Africa in the first Twenty20 international at the Wanderers Stadium on Sunday. Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were mainly responsible for India's 28-run win, just two days after the tourists completed a 5-1 thrashing of the hosts in a one-day international series. India captain Kohli left the field 13 overs into South Africa's innings after suffering a left leg strain while batting.

"I tweaked my glute a little bit. Thankfully it's not my hamstring," he said.

"The injury was early on in the innings when I went for the single. It was my glute and thankfully not my hammy. You know how I am, I had to bend bit more quickly. Then I felt a little bit more stiffness in my glute and that is why I went off. Not to be stupid and tear a muscle, I decided to go off and get it checked," added Kohli.

Earlier, South Africa captain JP Duminy won the toss and elected to bowl first on a pitch that was tailor-made for batsmen.

Rohit Sharma took India off to a flyer as Shikhar Dhawan and India captain Virat Kohli capitalised on the great start to take the visitors into a position of dominance in the first T20I played at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.

Kohli, who has been in some scintillating form in South Africa, got a reprieve with Farhan Behardien dropping him at long-on when batting on 10. However, Kohli, for a change, failed to cash in and was dismissed by Tabraiz Shamsi for 26.

Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar entered the record books with his career-best bowling figures of 5/24. With this feat, Kumar also became the second Indian after Yuzvendra Chahal to pick up a five-for in a T20I. Kumar was spot on with his bowling as he took the crucial wicket of Reeza Hendricks (70 runs) in the 18th over diminishing whatever hopes the hosts had against India. Kumar also became the first Indian paceman to claim a five-wicket haul in T20Is.

Virat Kohli limped off the field

Take rest bruh! You have done enough. Give the other blokes a chance to show their talent. =)

Standard Bank Proteas fast bowler, Junior Dala, expects better execution with the ball in the second KFC T20 International (T20I) against India at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday. India’s batsmen exploited the Proteas’ game plans in the 28-run loss in the opening match on Sunday, particularly during the six-over PowerPlay which went for 78 runs.

Dala admits the inexperienced attack struggled to adapt on the day, but believes the learnings from the loss will prompt an improved performance in the second must-win match on Wednesday.

“ I think with any game plan, if you don’t execute well it will look bad,” he said to the media on Tuesday. “ I think as bowlers we were honest with each other, and although we had a game plan, we felt we didn’t execute enough on that plan.

“The only thing that we will look to change is being more proactive than reactive,” he explained. “ We don’t want to be too predictable either. In the first three overs if there are a lot of cuts of pulls perhaps we can change it up a lot sooner. That is the only thing that I can think of, I don’t think we need to change too much but rather the execution of our plans.”

Dala became the first Zambian-born player to play for South Africa, a milestone he treasures given the spate of injuries he has overcome in the last year. He was satisfied with his first outing in the green and gold, but hopes to continue improving and learning on the international stage.

“ Considering that I was quite nervous I was glad with how it went,” he said. “ I don’t usually bowl in the PowerPlay for the Titans so for me to open the bowling was something new. I was glad that I could control the ball but maybe the adrenaline got too much for me at stages. Overall I feel it could have gone better but I was pleased that I managed to get a few wickets as well.

“ For me it means the most to me after the SA A tour and the injuries I have had,” he said. “ I always felt that I was a few performances away to cracking the nod after the SA A tour but the injuries set me back. I was glad that I could come back from that and do well in the RAM SLAM. I’m happy that I have overcome the injuries and that I can perform at the top level.”

Farhaan Behardien has urged the Standard Bank Proteas to play a ‘fearless’ brand of cricket in the third KFC T20 International against India at PPC Newlands on Saturday. The Proteas levelled the series with a commanding six-wicket win at SuperSport Park on Wednesday, a performance highlighted by brave and dominant hitting with the bat.

The bumper home series against India will come to a climax at a sold-out Newlands on Saturday, a fitting end to a competitive showing of cricket across the formats.

A win in the T20I series-decider would cap off a successful home series for the Proteas against the visitors, to go with the 2-1 Sunfoil Test series win last month.

“Tomorrow is a big game,” Behardien said ahead of the match on Friday. “The series is 1-1, hopefully the Cape Town faithful will come out and support us on Saturday night. This is another chance to play against a top side and to gain experience going forward.

One positive from the series has been the emergence of new talent. The new caps have made the transition and have stepped up to the pressures and standards of international cricket. Behardien says the performances from the youngsters have brought a refreshing element to the series, especially their flair, skill and composure.

“Junior (Dala) has been a consistent performer over the last few seasons so it’s nice to see him in full flight in the last few days,” he said. “Reeza (Hendricks) isn’t a newbie but he was the leading run-scorer in the RAM SLAM and he comes in with a lot of confidence into this series. I have played with Heinrich Klaasen the whole summer, he is coming off some massive form. I am impressed with the way they have taken to the international stage.

“A lot of the new faces don’t carry the baggage from the ODI series. They are fearless cricketers; you have guys bowling at 140km/h, guys smashing it out of the park, it is exciting to see.”

Play is scheduled to start at 18h00 local time.

South Africa's ODI/T20I losses against India - First time opposition has won both LOI series in SA

Proteas set unwanted white-ball landmark

By surrendering the decisive third Twenty20 international to India for a 2-1 series defeat, they also became the first Proteas outfit ever to lose both limited-overs portions of a tour here by a single bilateral foe.

Although, in fairness, the 2-1 Test series victory by SA at the outset of India’s safari will be considered achievement of the main business by many connoisseurs, it is nevertheless a stark reality that these visitors probably deserve to go down as the best Indian team to come to the country – courtesy of their 8-4 supremacy in the internationals played across the three formats.

Virat Kohli and his merry men romped to a particularly humiliating 5-1 triumph in the one-day internationals, and followed that up with their deserved 2-1 monopoly of the T20 fixtures.

In Test terms, you could argue that the current Indians were no better than five compatriot predecessors, all of whom also experienced series defeat in SA, although the exception was 2010/11 under MS Dhoni when a 1-1 stalemate was earned.

But the latest group were streets better than earlier Indian sides in the limited-overs fare, being the first, for example, to win the ODIs in SA after four unsuccessful earlier cracks on a strictly bilateral-series basis.

It didn’t end there: by putting the cherry on top of their white-ball supremacy with the T20 series triumph, that “double” made unpalatable history for South Africa.

Never before, in a single all-formats tour, has a visiting team beaten the Proteas in both one-day landscapes.

South Africa have suffered quite a few home T20 series defeats, in a format that can be notoriously lotto-like and sometimes may only involve one game, but generally compensated for that by faring a lot better in the ODI matches.

In 2016/17, unfancied Sri Lanka snatched the T20 series 2-1 but were clean-swept 5-0 in the 50-overs portion, and four other teams have previously earned bragging rights in the most condensed format while losing the ODIs on the same pilgrimage here.

The West Indies tourists of 2014/15 won the T20s 2-1 while losing the ODIs 4-1, the Pakistanis of 2012/13 won the T20 series 1-0 while being pipped 3-2 at ODI level, India won the T20 match in 2006/07 while losing the ODIs 4-0, and the 2005/06 New Zealanders also won a lone T20 international while being pulverised 4-0 in the ODIs.

So the 2017/18 Indians, apart from looking the most confident, multi-skilled and adaptable to conditions of all Indian touring sides visiting here, have achieved what no other country has before in South Africa

Standard Bank Proteas captain, Faf du Plessis, and his Indian counterpart, Virat Kohli, have donated R100 000 to the Cape Town Water Crisis on behalf of both teams.

The cheque was handed over to the Gift of the Givers at the last KFC T20 International at PPC Newlands on Sunday.

Gift of the Givers will use the donation to drill boreholes as well as supply bottled water to organizations in desperate need.

“Both teams had first-hand experience of the Water Crisis in Cape Town and, having chatted to Virat, we decided to get our teams to sign some jerseys which we auctioned off with the funds raised going to assist the Cape Town Water Crisis,” explained Du Plessis.

“We also wanted to create awareness and hope that other organizations and sports codes follow in our direction,” added Du Plessis.

Kohli stressed the importance of getting involved in this campaign.

“Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and whenever we visit and play at Newlands, we are treated extremely well by the local people. By creating awareness of the drought, we are playing our part in highlighting the drought so people can see the seriousness of what’s taking place in the Mother City,” commented Kohli.

Gift of the Givers Chairman, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, says the donation will be put to good use.

“Gift of the Givers appreciates the support from the South African and Indian cricket teams towards our Western Cape drought initiative. The generous contribution will assist us in essential borehole drilling in various areas which are virtually without water already,” said Sooliman.

“Funds would also be directed to augment homes for the mentally and physically challenged, cerebral palsy and orphanages with much needed bottled water,” he added.

Chief Ambassador for #SaveWater, Yusuf Abramjee, has thanked the Proteas for supporting the drive.

“The Proteas always lead,” said Abramjee.

“We thank the management of Cricket South Africa and the Proteas for supporting the #SaveWater and #EveryDropCounts campaign,” he concluded.

The #SaveWater and #EveryDropCounts campaign is an initiative between the Department of Water and Sanitation, Operation SA and Miss Earth SA.
