India v Pakistan : “Yuvraj Singh's game is not conducive to England" : Mohammad Azharuddin

Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin on Thursday minced no words as he described the role of star batsman Yuvraj Singh ahead of the team's opening Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan. Speaking at a cricket conclave, Azhar said the Yuvraj and Mahendra Singh Dhoni were no longer the same finishers they were a few years back.

"They can't be (the same finishers). They have been playing cricket for 14-15 years and playing consistently is not possible,” Azharuddin said.

“Yuvraj Singh's game is not conducive to England. He hasn't done so well since that hundred against England earlier this year," he added, while addressing a cricket conclave.

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke, however, backed Yuvraj and Dhoni ahead of India's blockbuster opening clash against Pakistan.

"I'd go with the two most experienced players in Yuvraj and Dhoni. This is their time to really stand up. You do need the mix of youth and experience in the team.

“But if I have to pick between Yuvraj and Rahane, I would go with the experienced player,” Clarke said.

Yuvraj, who made his ODI debut in the Champions Trophy (then ICC Knockout Trophy) against Kenya in 2000 in Nairobi, has been in good form. He scored 252 runs in 12 matches in the recently-concluded IPL 2017.

He was the part of India’s victorious Champions Trophy campaign in 2002. He also played the 2004 and 2006 editions of the tournament.

Considering Yuvraj’s current form and vast experience, Virat Kohli may prefer the all-rounder over Rahane in the high-octane clash against Pakistan.

Yuvraj always done well against us!

Well atleast he will be trying his best instead of trying to make a quick buck out of it Azhar. :)

Azhar is right. But Yuvraj can be absolutely lethal on flatter tracks, so we still have some hope.

Yuvi isn't fit enough to play school lvl cricket and here he's representing India in a prestigious tournament like CT.

India should've picked pant or iyer

Yuvraj is a man who rises to the occasion. Would have done wonders with the work ethic of Kohli but if he gets going goodbye Pakistan.

.........and in reply Yuvi gets MOM in cruical match against PK to silence Azhar :)))

Well predicted and true he has underachieved.

underachieved in tests. Not in ODIs. I wouldn't call a player who took us to the finals of the only WT20 we have won and the the Man of the series of one WC as underachieved. His stats aren't bad either - 8500 runs averaging 37 at 87 SR is not too bad for someone who played most of his cricket in the 2000s decade at no.5/6. Its only since 2012 that scoring has become that easy in ODIs.

Not saying Yuvi is better than Sanga, but if you compare Yuvi's stats to Sanga from the start of their careers (both started in 2000) to early 2012, you'll find that they had similar averages, but Yuvi had much higher SR.

Yuvi was great in ICC,not a doubt about it,but on statistics terms he was not great in billaterals a reason why many won't consider him a great in overall situation of the game.

Yuvi is much better and a greater odi player than sanga

There are some players who achieved greatness by doing well mainly in bilateral matches, without doing all that well in ICC tournaments.

Yuvraj on the other hand has done well in ICC tournaments. Winning man of the tournaments in two ICC championships that his side won makes him an all time great of ICC tournaments.
