The high-octane rivalry between India and Pakistan is all set to take center stage once again in the upcoming Asia Cup 2022. The two neighbouring nations don’t face each other in bilateral series which increases the intensity, even more, when they clash in multi-nation tournaments.

The arch-rivals will start their Asia Cup campaign this year on August 28 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Both teams will miss their key bowlers in the tournament as India’s Jasprit Bumrah and Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi are ruled out due to injuries.

However, the spotlight will be on Virat Kohli who will be making his comeback to the squad after a short break from competitive cricket. The batting maverick has been going through a lean patch with the bat and he will be under pressure to cement a place in the T20 World Cup squad through his performance in Asia Cup.

India have a dominant record in the tournament over their arch-rivals with 8 wins out of 14 matches they faced each other while one of it ended in no result.

Riding high on confidence after winning the 1983 World Cup, India started their domination in Asian cricket as they beat Pakistan by 54 runs and clinched the tournament played between three teams as Sri Lanka ended up as runner-up. Surinder Khanna was Player of the Match for his 56-run knock.

While Ajay Jadeja was the lone warrior with the bat and hit 93 runs but Abdul Razzaq with 4 scalps bundled out the Men in Blue for 251.

In reply, India had a poor start with opener Gautam Gambhir getting out for a duck. However, two of the greatest batters of all time - Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli changed the script with a 133-run stand. It was an easy task for India as they won the match by 8 wickets after a solid start by Rohit Sharma (52) and Shikhar Dhawan (46).

Personally I don’t think they were overconfident. They were just too soft and friendly on the day, and this allowed Pakistan to take the early advantage due to a surprise factor (Shaheen Afridi)

Pakistan has a very decent T20 team right now. Our biggest weakness is our non-existent middle-order. Babar and Rizwan have scored 46.4% of Pakistan's runs in T20Is since 2020. Normally you'd think that the team getting good starts consistently would do wonders for our middle-order because they get to bat without any pressure but that doesn't seem to be the case. No one has made a case for themselves in our middle-order.

Khushdil has failed to score a single half-century in his career so far. Iftikhar is extremely unreliable as a finisher or as a middle-order batsman. Asif Ali is as likely to play a good innings as Afridi, which means he isn't very likely to play a good innings. Haider Ali can't stop himself from throwing his wicket away for no reason. Fakhar Zaman had a good start to his T20 career but he's been extremely disappointing recently.

These guys are our main options and it's up to team Pakistan's management to make something out of them. One can only hope Haider Ail lives up to the hype in a few years. Right now Fakhar is going to be our main middle-order batsman.

Anything can happen ina T20 match, we saw tht last time. India does have an unsettled look to them, too many chopping and changing, too many players coming in off the cold -ie KL or out of form players- vk, rishab or some who are indiferent. Add this with our recent penchant for pickking pop gun medium pace trundlers in bhuvi, arshdeep , avesh and co, no one with real fire to push the opposition on backfoot, its going to be get the pacers out of the way and hopefully ash, yuzi and jads will strike. Else it will be a pounding.

I think after 2011 WC, this is the first time I am unsure of our chances. All other times, even in 2017 CT final when Pak won, our side was far superior man to man.

Shaheen's absence does put it in our favour as he can easily wreck our top 3 but with him not around, it does give us the edge.

Defending champions India will begin their campaign with the marquee clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai, about a year after they lost to them at the same venue in the T20 World Cup.

Ganguly said the T20 World Cup loss would have little bearing on the outcome of the coming games.

"Since 1992 I've been following Indo-Pak matches closely. In these 30 years we have lost only once. It's not magic that you will always win. You lose once or twice, it's not a big deal," Ganguly said.

Asked about the pressure that comes with playing Pakistan, he said: "The ones who play regular cricket like in my playing days, it's just another game where you have had to perform. I never played thinking 'Pakistan, Pakistan' only. Maybe during a World Cup semifinal, qualifier match, that sort of emotions were there.

"If you take all that into consideration, I know the likes of Rohit (Sharma), KL Rahul, Virat, (Rishabh) Pant know how to handle the pressure."

When asked whether Pakistan would miss their star pacer Shaheen Afridi, Ganguly said: "I don't think one player makes a difference in any team. We also don't have (Jasprit) Bumrah."
