India vs West Indies | 1st Test | Ahmedabad | October 2-6 | Match Discussion

Sometimes players just perform better when there is less pressure

Fail as soon as it’s the big stage. India A is indeed a great set up. Good to Judge the quality but if it’s not translating to the main team when you play for your country then it’s a mental issue. Maybe he is just never going to be ready as he has been provided quite a few chances already.

There are players waiting to take his spot. He isn’t all that talented that we need to wait for him to develop.

This applies to gill as well. I don’t give a crap about his potential. If he fails then drop him. Ruthless selection is what we need.

It’s not a government job. It’s like investment banking

You perform or perish.
This is a guaranteed win match.Actually Sai did way better in IPL playoffs than Gill. This is his home ground. He is probably trying to be needlessly too cautious. No.3 is such an important spot.

India ended their proceedings at 121/2 on Day 1 of the first Test against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad

At Stumps, KL Rahul (53*) and Shubman Gill (18*) remained unbeaten at the crease as two-down India trail by 41 runs. After bowling out the visitors for a paltry total in just 44.1 overs, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (36) and Rahul (53 not out) stitched together a 68-run stand for the opening wicket before the former was dismissed. India then lost Sai Sudharsan (7) cheaply before Rahul and skipper Shubman Gill (18 not out) batted out the remaining overs. Earlier, pacers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah shared seven wickets between them.

Another useless Test series with a team that has no business playing cricket at international level.

The more WI play, the more they embarrass themselves.

Not sure why this guy Sai is rated so highly by Gambhir and Agarkar

He doesn't have great FC stats. He is mostly an IPL bully
Gill probably picked him because of his runs on flat decks in the IPL. He has an average of 35 in domestic cricket, Easwaran should have been given the opportunity but Gambhir & his selections.

Saw first few overs. Empty stands. Besides few marquee series like Ashes, BGT, or Ind/ENG, hard to give an eyeball to test cricket.

Another disappointed innings from Sai. He needs to understand that he will get only 2 chance in whole series to prove his worth at 3 .

He is wasting golden opportunity to cement his place in the team. But we have not Many options either for Number 3 position.

:kp

Even a 100 lead is more than enough for India to comfortably win this test but with best part of 4 days left & batting will be extremely hard in 4th & 5th day, hopefully the Indian batsmen are greedy and pile on the runs until tomorrow Lunch at least & improve their stats

;kp

Gill looks in such lovely form. Barely a false shot...just look at that control percentage - 95%. He better use this purple patch and the home season to get his average into the high 40s at least. No way I batter of his class should be averaging 42. To think it was below 40 before the England tour! Absurd!

Nothing absurd about Gill averaging below 40! I find him a bit of a softie. No way you should be playing a reverse sweep when you don't play it in even in T20s No way it should be done in a test match especially when you have everything at your command.

I think our batting is too light in this test.

Perhaps it will get papered over against an opposition like WI but against a quality team SA, it may come back to bite us.

Too many bowlers, who could bat a bit. We are playing with only these batsmen in this test

Rahul
Jaiswal
Gill

Are they enough?

Extremely poor stroke by Gill. What was he thinking?
Agreed. This is what comes from trying to force an all-format player. He's excellent in Tests and One-dayers and should stay in his late. It's not like he's some atrocious T20 player but by pursuing this path, we risk turning him into a Jack of all trades and Master of none.

It stuck me as well. From the days when we played 6 batters and sometimes a poor wicketkeeper to make it 7 batters and 4 bowlers to now when we're playing only 4 specialist batters.

We could've done without one of Nitesh or Sundar.

I think Sundar is must especially after his exploits in last year's series against NZ.

Nitish Reddy is totally expendable though. He is not much of a batsman, nor much of a bowler.

Sai Sudarshan should be playing in T20s (didn't play in Asia Cup, could have replaced even Gill), I am baffled at him playing in tests. Even in first class his average is just 40...
