'Yeti footprints': Indian army mocked over claim

The Indian army has claimed to have found footprints of the yeti, sparking jokes and disbelief on social media.

The army tweeted to its nearly six million followers on Monday that it had discovered "mysterious footprints of mythical beast 'Yeti' at the Makalu Base Camp [in the Himalayas]".

The yeti - a giant ape-like creature - often figures in South Asian folklore.

There is no evidence proving yeti exist but the myth retains a strong appeal in the region.

And the army has now added to the legend by sharing pictures of "footprints" in the snow on an official Twitter account.

Although the footprints were discovered on 9 April, the army made the discovery public only after deciding that it matched earlier theories about the yeti, according to a report in the Times of India.

Reacting to the disbelief on social media, the army said the "evidence" about the yeti had been "photographed " and "handed over to subject matter experts".

"So, we thought it prudent [to go public] to excite scientific temper and rekindle the interest."

The yeti, also known as the Abominable Snowman, is a legendary creature that is said to inhabit the upper reaches of the Himalayas. Stories of people seeing the yeti or its footprints are common in parts of India, Nepal and Bhutan.

In 2013, research by a British scientist concluded that the legendary Himalayan yeti may in fact be a sub-species of brown bear.

Twitter users reacted with disbelief that the Indian army would make such a bold claim about the footprints of a "mythical beast".

The claim also inspired humour in good measure.

There have been numerous attempts in recent years to solve the mystery of the yeti.

In 2011, DNA tests on a "yeti finger" taken from Nepal to London half a century ago found it to be human bone.

And in 2013, DNA tests on hair samples carried out by Oxford University genetics professor Bryan Sykes found that they matched those from an ancient polar bear. He said the most likely explanation for the myth is that the animal is a hybrid of polar bears and brown bears.

Jokes aside, if this is indeed some sort of legit discovery (and not some undiscovered natural phenomenon) then it is great. If a genuine sighting of a Yeti is achieved after this, that would be a big thing for humanity.

This is probably the Indian Army's most plausible claim in recent years, such are their standards.

I love stuff like this, aliens, and other conspiracies but I dont take them as serious as most people. Judging by the pics it is hard to say much about this claim. Shouldn't their be 2 sets of foot prints? looks like only one foot, is the yeti hopping around one foot in mountains? Lots of questions arise, who knows if these are accurate claims. Still I hope that more evidence can come and we do find a real yeti, that would be cool

It is shocking to see such unprofessional behavior from an army which is supposed to be among top 5 in the world.

Could it be an ancestor of Modi? Legend has it that the man possesses a 56 inch chest, so the genes are there...

A 56-inch chest on a male is usually due to gynaecomastia.

Anyhow, jokes at the expense of the Indians aside, I must register my dismay at people skeptical of the yeti/sasquatch and other misunderstood beasts. I have a message for such naysayers from the yeti’s American cousin:

Would have been more believable if they didn’t share pictures :modi

The locals from nearby area have their own snowshoes. Pretty sure this is the case.

How can one believe what Indian Army says is the biggest question mark for me really.

Aye??????

I will wait for joshilabhai cricketjoshila before commenting, he always has the answer which will makes sense.

Good. Should stick to fantasy and make believe expeditions and adventures.

Could be a good plot line for Phantom 3.

"Mitroon..ye 'Yeti' pichle 60 saal mein dikha tha kya, main puchta hoon dikha tha kya? Nahin dikha tha na. Aaj 'Yeti' ko humlog dekh rahe hai kyunki Dilli mein majboot sarkar hai.

Congress ki sarkar jo kaam 60 saalon mein nahin kar saki, wo humne 60 mahine mein kar dikhaya"
This tweet is gold

Who told you this ? Another Indian ? LOL. We aren't in top 5 in anything other than corruption and population.

However it has piqued my curiosity.

What else could this be?

The foot looks huge in the second pic.

The locals use their own version of snow shoes, don't google "snow shoes" and assume everyone wears what North American aboriginals wear. Very likely some guy decided it would be cool to make imprints under the sole to look cool.

This makes sense.

So the Indian army has finally found Bigfoot:)):)):)) All they have to do is show the world a few pictures to prove it then they can go after the Loch Ness monster:ashwin
