A Muslim man who was attacked by cow vigilantes last week died of his injuries on Monday night in Alwar, Rajasthan, The Hindustan Times reported today.

Pehlu Khan was among the 15 Muslims from Haryana's Nuh district who were attacked by cow vigilantes over suspicion that they were smuggling cows in Rajasthan. While some of the injured men are in hospital, others are in judicial custody.

In Rajasthan, the slaughter of bovine animals is punishable with imprisonment for a minimum of one year and a maximum of ten years. To possess, sell or transport any beef or beef products in the state is punishable with a minimum of six months in prison and a maximum of five years.

No one has been arrested for the attack, so far. "We have registered a case of murder against six persons and 200 unknown people," Ramesh Sinsinwar, the station house officer of Bahror, told HT.

200 unknown people. Says it all about the state of civilisation in modern India yet these guys still want to be seen as Incredible or Shining in their tourism PR blurbs.

They surely are not unknown people. I bet these are the people who have the backing of the sitting Yogis and Babas in the Assembly and Parliament.

So 200 people were able to commit a murder and even managed to remain anonymous.

The Law and Order situation in India seems to be as bad as rest of the SC.

Now a day every story of two gangs fighting is somehow spun into a fight over cow meat.

I don't see reputed sources confirming this incident.

India has ways to go before it can be called civilized.

Just 2 days ago, I saw news where a person affiliated to one political party beat the living bulbs out of a person from rival party with a stick. It was as though he was beating a dog. All of this captured on a camera by News Channel. The assailant knows nothing will happen to him as his party is in power. This is in Andhra (South).

Surely we belong to Allah and to Allah shall we return

May Allah grant Pehlu Khan heaven on the judgement day directly. Ameen.

I will rephrase my post again..

This vigilante assaults are rising due to the extremist nature of the government and the growing right wing extremists in India. Muslims in India are weak politically and need to stand up to these radicals, it's beef today and will be something else tomorrow in this glowing secular democracy.

Does he or any human deserve to die?? And what is the use of this government, police and court when mob justice is taking place everywhere??

RIP, terrible state of affairs, ticking time bomb, its time for law and order to be upheld with such strict norms.
Our judiciary has failed us.

Yah it reminds me of the bullied kid in the school who takes it all up and in turn gets more bullied for not giving it back.

Muslims in India need to form a united joint and fight this oppression, Otherwise it all be too late for them.

Probably hundreds of such incidents happen in India every day with almost all going unreported. Modi has opened a can of worms here with his Muslim bashing not realising the consequences. Most sane Indian's can't wait for the next national elections so that this mad man is ousted as PM.

the rss must be stopped.as for my fellow non hindi belts residing hindus' don't think for a moment you are safe. rss's hindutwa is actually hindiwavad.in bengal their latest slogan has been "no durga,no kali, only jai shriam, vajrangvaii,"i don't know how a self-respecting bengali hindu can not hate rss after this

What makes you say that he will be ousted? Hasnt he still been sweeping recent state elections?
Most Indian dont care about this as an issue.

the various communist parties of india must unite togetrher. that's the only way to stop the cow-belt's cultural aggression

Coz most Indian's don't like his Hindutva views. I think Congress has more then a few thousand voters. Similarly, how do you know that most Indian's don't consider killing innocent Muslim's for their eating habits to be an issue?

No one deserves to die like this. Not even a hardcore criminal. Can't believe it happened in Rajasthan of all places.

The recent state election result show his popularity rising not decreasing!

Modi appears to be delivering on the financial and anti corruption agenda which much more important to the majority of Indians that cow agendas.

Hindus and Muslims have been living peacefully in Rajasthan for centuries and incidents like these are exceptions rather than norm.Rajasthani muslims are our brothers and feeling is mutually shared.
To give you guys an example, whenever the elder Muslim ladies(60 or more) visit our house in village, my mother or other younger females of the house always sit at their feet and never alongside them on chair. They will touch their feet for ashirwad.Have seen this countless times with my own eyes.Such is the harmony between both the religions here . But that might also be due to the fact that Rajputs are majority in my area and being true Kshatriyas we rarely indulge in such disgusting incidents as mentioned in op.

Modi opened that can of worms 15 yrs ago when he was widely considered to be complicit in the anti-Muslim riots of Gujarat where a Muslim MP was hacked to death by a mob wielding swords and axes. On the back of that he became leader of the whole nation and India's PM.

I get that you are trying to deflect this onto Pakistan, possibly through shame at accepting what goes on in India, but Modi and his Hindutva support base really have nothing to do with Pakistan.

Scary thought. But I have no doubts that if things continue like this, then we could end up like that in a matter of decades. India has worked well to preserve it's secularism so far, and I really hope it stays the case.

Cow agenda is important for 200 million Muslim's in your country. He may be doing well in certain aspects but state elections are different to national ones. If his attitude towards Muslim's does not change it will not hold him in good standing come the next general elections. They are different to state elections.

Gujarat will always hang over him. His current attitude is not helping him either, the sword is still hanging over his head.

Height of stupidity it's a disgrace really.. Cowards go in a group and attack the weak, there is a growing sense of intolerance when you read such news however unless you face such an incident yourself you won't be able to relate.. People need to realise that we are humans first and Hindu Muslim second..

Modi's antics are not new. Indians new about them before his party swept the election(him being the PM).

These incidents are not a revelations - they were expected.

Well if they were expected and you consider them to be normal then it will only encourage Hindu fascists to tighten the screw on your Muslim's even more. Today they are banning beef, tomorrow they will outlaw Ramadan and Eid as well.

By voting in Hindu revivalist parties to lead the nation? How's that working out so far?

Errr but this happened when Congress was in charge too also........... You asked me a question and I answered it

Exactly. India is anything but a secular nation, to win votes the two main political parties have to prove their Hindutva credentials to gain favour with the public. The same public which beats a man to death for transporting holy cows across the country.

My friend yours and my views of secularism differs, India has a 180 Mill strong muslim population unlike your country which will have no minorities in the coming decades. Dont throw stones from a glass house......

There's plenty of minorities in my country, too many according to some, hence the vote for Brexit. The houses here are made of bricks and mortar so I guess it's okay to throw a few well meaning stones. Take it as constructive criticism.

This sets a dangerous precedent.

People can't take law into their hands.

RIP.

This has been happening or a long time. Happens in rural Tamil Nadu village all the time. Murders of many lower castes people go unsolved as the upper castes have links with political party. It is almost always the party with the old guy that hasn't died yet, the party with 2 leaves aren't any different either. Watch the movie Maveeran Kittu, the reality isn't any different than it is shown on movies. Things have only gotten little better with lower castes producing educated graduates.

India is a secular country, it only takes a quick google search to find out. You will find out if you try not to be biased. You seem to want India to look inferior to make up for the detrimental of Pakistan. The action of Pro-Hindu ruling government in few parts of India doesn't represent the rest of India. Obviously these are BJP goons. Congress is not religious but they are far more corrupt than BJP. Like I said before, if you go to Chennai you can have a nice steak at few steakhouse. My friend's uncle owns one.

Saw the video of this it is totally embarrassing. They purchased these cows from jaipur fair, they even tried to show the documents but these bunch of illiterate thugs beat them and let the driver who was hindu run. They even snatched their money. Just goes to show what was the real intention behind this.

A video of violence leading to murder is just embarrassing? to each their own I guess.

These were no thugs, but murderers.

The way India govern has nothing to do with religion. Caste has nothing to do with religion for most part in the South. Caste has become more of a clan. Often these people that people that promote caste-ism isn't even religious but they find a way to spread hatred for "lower castes". Did I tell you these people are not Brahmins either ? They are the "middle castes".

You are just repeating my observation of Romalli Roti's defensiveness ( post #33) and aiming them at me. That suggests my view that:

"I get that you are trying to deflect this onto Pakistan, possibly through shame at accepting what goes on in India, but Modi and his Hindutva support base really have nothing to do with Pakistan."

must have struck a deep chord and burned into your psyche. But the intention wasn't to hurt your sentiments, it was constructive criticism. Deflecting from incidents like these onto Pakistan isn't going to make India more secular no matter how many google searches you do. Only those who doubt it would need to find the answer from a search engine to begin with. Be in peace bro, we learn from our errors.

'You may as well kill us': Human cost of India's meat 'ban'
30 March 2017
India
Shakeel Ahmad has been selling meat since 1970s
Image caption Shakeel Ahmad has been selling meat since the 1970s and knows no other way of making a living
The government's crackdown on meat shops in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has left many traders and butchers without much work and money. The BBC's Vikas Pandey meets them in Allahabad city.

"I have no money since my shop shut two weeks ago. I don't know how to feed my children and aging parents. Is it because I am a Muslim, or a meat trader?" Shakeel Ahmad, 52, asks.

He is angry with the state's new chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, who opposes the slaughter and consumption of cows, considered sacred by India's Hindu majority.

Authorities have closed many slaughterhouses since Mr Adityanath's BJP party won the state elections earlier in the month. Small shops selling goat and chicken have also been forced to shut, despite the slaughter of these animals being legal.

Most butchers are Muslims and many suspect that they are being targeted unfairly. They allege that their businesses are being shut on technicalities. One meat traders association went on strike, alleging harassment by state authorities.

Image caption The crackdown on "illegal" slaughterhouses is causing heartache in the state.
Mr Ahmad says he understands the crackdown on slaughterhouses which sell beef "because it was one of the BJP's campaign promises".

India meat traders strike over closures
Who's the Hindu hardliner running India's most populous state?
Why beef ban in Indian state undermines secularism
"But why punish small shop owners who sell goat and sheep meat? Most butchers like me earn daily, and don't have any other skill after being in the business for decades," he says.

His family of 10 members lives in a small two-room house
Image caption Shakeel Ahmad's family of 10 members lives in a small two-room house
He adds that municipal authorities recently rejected his application to renew his licence.

"They want me to set up a waste disposal unit, but I don't have the money needed for it."

Mr Ahmad lives in a small house with nine other family members in a densely populated area, mostly inhabited by the Muslim Qureshi community.

Fatima Begum says she running out of money to buy medicines
Image caption Fatima Begum says she is running out of the medicine she needs, and has no money to buy any more
His mother, Fatima Begum, says that the community in this area has traditionally earned its livelihood through the meat trade.

"Men in this community don't have any other skill. We are already poor, and now we are not sure where the next meal is going to come from. They may as well kill us," she says.

Ms Begum says she needs regular medication because of her old age.

"I am running out of my medicines, but I haven't told this to my son because I don't want to add to his troubles," she says.

Husna Begum says she fears that her children's education may get affected
Image caption Husna Begum says she fears that her children's education may get affected
Mr Ahmad's wife, Husna Begum, is worried about her children's education.

"I want my children to get a good education and come out of poverty. If the government thinks meat shops are bad, then give us something else to do.

"Is it a crime to dream about a good future for your children?" she asks.

'I am scared'

A few blocks away, I meet Mohamed Shariq who has also shut his shop.

"I have the licence needed to run my shop, but I fear attacks from right-wing groups," he says.

Mr Shariq's fear is not unfounded.

Media reports suggest that several meat shops have been attacked in the state in the past two weeks.

Mohamed Shariq says he can't even sell chicken these days
Image caption Mohamed Shariq says he can't even sell chicken these days
Mr Shariq invites me to his house, and asks a question.

"Just look around. My house is already breaking apart. I have to feed 10 people. Is it fair to ban our only source of livelihood?"

His brother P Qureshi and other members of the family also join the conversation.

A family of 10 members depends on P Qureshi's earnings
Image caption A family of 10 members depends on P Qureshi's earnings
They are all worried about their future.

"I hope and pray that the chief minister understands our problems and stops people who are misusing his name. We know there is no official ban on slaughtering sheep and goats, but we are still scared," Mr Qureshi says.

Every house in this community has similar stories.

Abdul Qureshi, who ferries animals in his cycle rickshaw, says the crackdown seems so unreasonable because Hindus too eat meat.

Abdul Qureshi hasn't gone out to work for 10 days
Image caption Abdul Qureshi hasn't gone out to work for 10 days
"Most of the customers in this market are Hindus. Even the Indian Army people buy from our shops. I don't understand how banning a food item proves anybody is more or less religious," he says.

'Not just Muslims'

Gulzar Qureshi is the community leader here, and he explains that "people don't understand that this is not just Muslims' problem".

"Most people who rear sheep and goats are Hindus. I know so many Hindus who have come here from their villages to sell their animals and are now stuck," he says.

Chunni Lal is one of them.

Chunni Lal says he has been selling goats and sheep to Muslims for decades
Image caption Chunni Lal says he has been selling goats and sheep to Muslims for decades
"I am running out of money to feed the five goats I have brought with me. Nobody is willing to buy them," Mr Lal says.

Gulzar Qureshi says people who believe that the meat trade ban has only affected butchers and slaughterhouse owners are wrong.

"That's just over simplification. Cattle farmers, middlemen who buy animals and butchers are all affected," he says.

He adds that even rickshaw pullers who ferry these animals, and tannery workers who need leather don't have much work these days.

"We are not asking for fancy roads and schools. Just let us earn whatever little amount we make for our children. I think that's the least a citizen can expect from his government," he says.

Really?

That is pathetic.

Our leaders need to do more than pay lip service saying "hey we have to sort this out" blah blah.....

This is very very very dangerous situation where people take law into their own hands.

What's happening in this nation in this regard is making me deeply uncomfortable.

Has any action been taken against these people?

Anti Cow Slaughter Laws exist since 1958. Guess why they came into existence.

So India hasn't been secular since 1958.

You don't become secular overnight by adding a few words in the constitution. It may signify that the state aims to become a secular state, but it is the execution which matters. While execution was far from desired earlier, now the progress is being reversed, and India is moving towards a communally divided society. Whether it will be a short term problem or will define the new direction of the country, remains to be seen.

Anti Cow Slaughter Laws exist since 1958. Guess why they came into existence.

As per the1958 judgement, the state could only ban the slaughter of unproductive bovines not capable of functioning as milch or draught animals but nowadays each state has their own Anti-cow slaughter laws which the BJP under PM Modi is planning to make as a nationwide ban on all cattles. I thought you were more updated than me in these matters.

Cow slaughter laws in various states of India
Status_of_cow_slaughter_in_India.jpg

It's not only Nehru who does the wrong always..In 2005, the Supreme Court*upheld*a law passed by the Gujarat government of Chief Minister Narendra Modi, which banned the slaughter of all cows in Gujarat.

The Ban on Cow Slaughter Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on 1999 by Shri Adityanath which provided for complete prohibition on slaughter of cows for all purposes....And we know how influencial is this Yogi among these states where this deaths have occured....

Leave the north, even the weak Kerala bjp fraction has also called for a state wide ban on beef here despite knowing that nobody will pay a heed to what they say in this part of the world..

This beef BS is getting out of hand by the day. India turning to the far-right will probably lead to a religious civil war.

Why is Modi silent and not making a speech against these bullies? Is he silently in agreement with the goons?

Sad that a man had to die for outrage on this stupidity. We need a Liberal opposition collectively, these issues cannot be put under the carpet it will come to haunt us later.

I'm a vegetarian and all for upholding the cow slaughter laws, but this mob methods have to be stopped, its time for police reforms this is getting really terrible.

UPA-1 atleast passed the RTI bill, don't feel any good bill with a far consequence impact has been passed by NDA.

what about the Indian civil society? why they are not saying something? should held demonstrations, hunger strike etc. to curb this evil or India will break

Right wing nutters at it again. I don't eat beef either but don't force your draconian laws on people who wish to do so and tacitly support mob violence in the name of beef. The right wing need a serious reality check and should be voted out of power in all states. Even UPA was better than this. We need to aggressively promote "secularism" as it is truly understood in the West and not this hotch-potch version which was bound to fail from the beginning.

So where was i wrong?I said that cow slaughter ban came in 1958.Rather it was upheld by the SC.Since then the SC has upheld a total ban on cow slaughter.Article 48 of constitution mandates that state ban cow slaughter.Every state except a few had anti cow slaughter laws long before BJP came to power.

The demand for cow slaughter ban came on the back of Nehru allowing Muslim personal laws to be part of the constitution.Neither should have been allowed. No personal laws,no cow slaughter ban nothing. This is a secular country. The mistake was made in 1950 and we are paying for it today.

Most anti cow slaughter laws were passed in various states by 1970s.

I know its fashionable to blame Modi, but he didnot pass the acts. The original Gujarat Animal Preservation Act was passed in 1954.

GST Bill.

Oh yeah...BJP and it's allies can't do nothing wrong. It's always the "Nehru" responsible for every mess in this country.

I was totally wrong to quote you...will never do that mistake again..

Why is it difficult to accept that this mess is creation of Nehru? BJP is only taking advantage of it.Reverse polarisation.

Please tell me how BJP is responsible for passing anti cow slaughter laws in 1950s 60s 70s?

How is BJP responsible for allowing these stupid no good religion specific laws to even exist?

BJP didnt make the constitution,Congress did. So the inherent faults of them are to be blamed on them only.

They are the reason of this reverse polarisation and rise of right wing in India.

I am sorry if i didnt quite fulfill your expectations, but i will call a spade a spade.Just like what happened in the OP is a murder, what Nehru did about this religious laws is also a blunder.

BJP is not responsible for the creation of these laws, but BJP is fully responsible for taking political advantage out of these laws, and acting as enablers for the violence against minorities.

Nice attempt at deflecting the blood on BJP. You are justifying the new consolidation of hindu vote bank by calling it reverse polarization. So around 80% hindus developed fear from 15% muslims and polarized against them to send in a government which safeguards hindus' interests, while at the same time cutting the muslims to size?

What are the fears from Muslims? They are anti national because they don't sing the vande mataram, and those who sing are patriots? That they get haj subsidy they get comes from hindu taxpayers, and the money spent on hindu festivals comes from trees? That they can marry more than one woman and hindus cannot? Their love jihad seducing hindu women? What exactly is the reason that hindus have reverse polarized, in your opinion?
