Indian Farmers Protests

SC stays agriculture laws, big win for farmers!

Probably first real defeat for feku ever since he took over! Will be interesting to see how he bounces back from this setback!

Farmers don't want the committee which SC wants. Farmers don't want stay, they want a repeal.

What will happen to those farmers who had started contract farming under the new laws? Hope the stay doesn't affect them. SC judges are quite dumb, so you never know.

Farmers don't want the committee which SC wants. Farmers don't want stay, they want a repeal.
Which is fair enough. All 4 members of the committee are the ones who backed farm laws so farmers naturally don't expect any fair dealing from them. Ideally 2 of them should have been from farmers' side.

Looks like it is drama to prevent farmers from doing anything on the republic day. SC doesn't have power to overrule the act, which they haven't done and don't intend to do.

Correct. This so called committee is just a hogwash to prevent for doing something drastic on republic day. Legislative, executive, judiciary, media, you name it and he has them in his pocket.

Good on farmers to totally reject SC decision to keep these laws in abeyance. They should settle at nothing less than total repeal of these draconian laws.

SC stays implementation of new farm laws, forms committee; farmers say won't appear before ‘impartial’ panel

In an attempt aimed to end the deadlock between the central government and thousands of farmers, the Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the implementation of the three controversial farm laws and formed a committee to resolve the impasse between the Centre and the farmers' unions protesting at Delhi's borders over the legislations.

Making an observation that the negotiations between the farmers' bodies and the government have not yielded any result so far, a bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde and comprising Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian ordered formation of a committee to end the deadlock

The court-appointed Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) president Bhupinder Singh Mann, Shetkeri Sangathana (Maharashtra) president Anil Ghanwat, South Asia Director for International Food Policy Research Institute Pramod Kumar Joshi, and agriculture economist Ashok Gulati, as the members of the committee.

While forming the committee, the top court said that the panel would hear both the sides and get back to it within two months.

Protesting farmers have decided to reject the Centre's new proposal of putting the three new farm laws on hold for 18 months while negotiations continue with a fresh committee.

On Wednesday, the government had put forward the proposal at the 10th round of negotiations with the farmers' unions.

“We have rejected the government proposal to put the bills on hold for 18 months. We will go ahead with the tractor rally on the Outer Ring Road,” said Sukhwinder Kaur, state committee member Bhartiya Kisan Union Krantikari.

The next round of meetings between the government and the farmer unions has been scheduled for Friday. Kaur told Outlook that the farmer unions are on the same page on the issue. “The Unions will convey their decision in tomorrow’s meeting with the government,” she said.

Speaking to Outlook, P Krishna Prasad, leader of All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) said that the unions have been demanding for repealing the bills from the beginning. He said that the main demand of making Minimum Support Price (MSP) legal was a long-sought demand of the farmer's unions and there is no going back on it.

Earlier in the day, during the talks between the Delhi Police and the protesting farmers’ union, the unions refused to accept the alternative route for January 26 tractor rally on Delhi’s Outer Ring Road. The police have suggested using the KMP Expressway for the rally.

In a full general body meeting of Samyukt Kisan Morcha, the umbrella body of 40 protesting farmer unions, the members reiterated a full repeal of three laws and enacting legislation for remunerative MSP as the pending demands of the peasants’ movement.

Supreme Court has already ordered to put a stay on the three laws till further notice and a committee of experts has been formed to resolve the deadlock. The committee has been asked by the apex court to submit its report within two months after consulting all stakeholders.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha paid homage to the 143 farmers who have been martyred in ongoing protest so far. "These companions are separated from us while fighting this mass movement. Their sacrifice will not go in vain and we will not go back without the repealing of these farm laws," Dr Darshan Pal said.

What is happening in other states?

Not only Delhi, but the protests are taking place all over India. Farmers are uniting for Republic Day through vehicle rallies in many places in Karnataka. Farmers’ tractor marches are taking place in Kerala.

Farmers of Bilaspur and Rampur in Uttarakhand are preparing for the farmers' parade in Delhi by organising tractor march. Farmers in Chhattisgarh will march towards the Raj Bhavan on January 23 and a group of farmers will also leave for Delhi.

The Kisan Delhi Chalo Yatra of Navnirman Kisan Sangathan, which was started from Odisha, is being disturbed repeatedly by the Uttar Pradesh Police. Instructions are being given to change their route.

A three-day big protest in Kolkata will take place from January 20 to January 22. Thousands of people are participating in this huge event. It is also expected to intensify the protest in the coming days.

New Delhi: Over 300 Twitter handles have been traced to Pakistan that have been created to disrupt and hijack the tractor rally on Republic Day by farmers protesting the central government's new agricultural laws, the Delhi Police claimed on Sunday.

Detailing the plan for the tractor parade, Deependra Pathak, Special Commissioner of Police (Intelligence) said the rally on Tuesday will be conducted amid tight security after the Republic Day celebrations conclude.

"Over 300 Twitter handles have been generated from Pakistan during January 13 to 18 to disrupt the tractor rally by farmers only by misleading people. There are inputs about the same from different agencies too. It will be a challenging task for us, but the rally will be conducted amid tight security after the Republic Day parade is over," Mr Pathak said at a news conference.

The police said Pakistani Twitter handles were pushing hashtags linked to disrupt the farmers' protest.

Asked to elaborate, he said, "There is a threat perception that Pakistan-based terrorist groups can create some trouble. Mischievous elements can create a law-and-order situation. The 308 Twitter handles originating from Pakistan have been pushing hashtags linked to the farmers' protest and the tractor rally."

Since November last year, farmers, mostly from Punjab and Haryana, have been protesting the centre's three new agriculture laws at several Delhi border points, including Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur, demanding that the legislations be repealed.

While the police tried to convince farmer leaders to hold their tractor parade outside the national capital, they were adamant on holding the proposed rally on Delhi's busy Outer Ring Road.

Earlier, there have been three rounds of meetings between the unions and police officers from Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, but it was during the fourth round of talks over the tractor parade on Friday where both sides reached an agreement.

As I see Khalistani trending ,it's obvious that the anti-Sikh propaganda continues unabated . Sikhs should be aware and beware as I think Hindus have decided that all non Hindus in India should live as second class citizens.

Not only Khalistani, the entire so called farmer movement has been exposed today. Well, there was never any doubt that this farmer movement was a propaganda like Shaheen Bagh movement was last year. But some naive and innocent people who actually started to believe that these are well wisher of farmers also found the harsh reality today. Just check all the trending topics in twitter.

Even Congressis are unable to defend and as usual Modi/Shah is having the last laugh

Yeah all Sikhs are Khalistanis .

Now I really hope that this comes true.

Yeah all Sikhs are Khalistanis .

Now I really hope that this comes true.

All Sikhs are not Khalistanis just like all Sikh's are not causing riot in red fort. Its only Khalistani propagandist who is causing mayhem and in the process exposing themselves. Had they continued with peaceful protests...this farmer bill drama would have continued for few more days. But after today's event....army will take care. They are already on their way to Delhi.

Thousands of Indian farmers battled police across New Delhi on Tuesday as they took protests against agriculture reform into the capital during a giant Republic Day military parade.

Police laid on one of their biggest security operations in years in a bid to keep protesters away from Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he oversaw a parade full of pomp.

Police manned barricades at intersections around the centre of the city, while soldiers with machine guns patrolled metro trains.

But after barging through barricades on the city's main arteries, convoys of farmers on tractors sped wildly around city roads, forcing police and bystanders to leap for safety.

Protesters waved farm union flags from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort, where prime ministers annually hoist the national flag to mark the country's independence.

Across the city, security forces fired tear gas and staged baton charges, but the protesters laid into police with their own weapons — and hijacked buses that had been used to block their convoys.

Two months of protests against agricultural laws that deregulated produce markets have turned into the biggest challenge faced by Modi's Hindu nationalist government since it came to power six years ago.

The government had opposed the rally saying it would be a “national embarrassment” at a time when it should be celebrating Republic Day.

Barricades breached
Police, however, said they would allow the demonstration if farmers waited until after the military parade, and kept to a route away from central Delhi.

But barricades were breached while Modi and other ministers were watching tanks and troops pass along the Rajpath boulevard as newly acquired Rafale fighter jets flew overhead.

Some protesters reached a major intersection just three kilometres (1.8 miles) from the parade.

Modi was driven back to his residence barely 30 minutes before the farmers took over the city centre.

Tens of thousands of farmers have camped on the outskirts of the capital since November, protesting against the new laws which the government says will boost rural incomes.

Union leaders say they will allow private Indian conglomerates to take over the agriculture industry — the rockbed of the economy — and end guaranteed prices for most of their produce.

Popular support
Farmers' leaders say they have enough supplies to keep their protest camps going for at least a year. The leaders blamed the authorities for the violence saying police had provoked the farmers.

“When you attack a peaceful protest, then difficulties for the government will surely increase,” union leader Kawalpreet Singh Pannu told AFP.

He said a new protest would be held on February 1 outside parliament when the government announces its budget.

Earlier, on one main road leading into the city, people on rooftops threw petals on the tractor convoys. Elsewhere people cheered and applauded as the farmers went past waving Indian flags and blowing horns.

The parade was cut back this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, with the number of spectators reduced from 125,000 to 25,000.

Mass rally
The government says the farmers have been manipulated by opposition parties, which have largely backed the rural campaign.

Ten rounds of talks between farm unions and ministers have failed to break the deadlock.

Smaller demonstrations were also held on Tuesday in Mumbai and Bangalore, and in the rural state of Haryana.

Police told petrol stations in the region around Bangalore not to sell fuel for tractors to farmers so they could not get to the protest, union leaders said.

#Breaking | UP Police climbs stage at the #Ghazipur site. The farmer leader Rakesh Tikait, who was on the stage, has refused arrest. "I will hang from the stage but I will not leave the stage," Tikait said.

BJP seems really keen to force a confrontation- lets see how far the Gujurati version of General Dyer will go.

The fact that there wasn’t security around Red Fort on the Republic Day is indicative of the government’s effort to paint the movement in its own communal color.

Watching live scenes from Ghazipur border and UP police came to the stage to arrest Tikait and then left without doing anything:91:

Now Tikait saying 'goli chalegi" and those who are scared should leave. No one leaves.

It means you are conceding that the protest had communal colour, and blaming the govt that it didnt do anything to prevent it from exposing itself. Which is a fair point, but the bigger point is that it was communal.

Watching live coverage of Singhu border on Punjabi channel and the place looks like a tinder box, everyone is appealing for peace.

BJP supporters have shown up and they are not being stopped by police.

BJP supporters finally escorted out by police but how were they allowed to come so close to where the farmers are being barricaded.

Everyone has the right to protest, even the ones who are against the mandate of a constitutionally elected govt passing bills constitutionally.

This is not going to end well.

I wonder how Sikhs will take to being treated like Muslims.

People appealing for peace and calm saying we will not take the first step but if push comes to shove, we will stay and fight.

BJP trying it's best using its cadre and the administration to provoke a fight.

Modi and his co -kanjars can do anything for money and power.

Yeah, everyone has the right to protest except the farmers who are being barricaded into a corner.

Very tense atmosphere at this border with Nihangs trying to maintain peace.

This is reminding me of Jallianwala Bagh where the protestors were also cornered and then shot.

People puzzled as to why they are being barricaded and the roads around them are being blocked.

all talk. what happened after the golden temple massacres? At some point this will petre out. They are lock stock and barrel in the state. The govt will eventually come up with some deal that will seems as if it satisfies them but they wont realise until its too late that it wont give them anything and by then they wont be able to do anything..Happens all the time..

There are only 58% Sikhs in Punjab.. reduced as well due to them migrating the most..Hindus , Jains are rest.. not really sure what you are expecting ?

Even with 58% they (I’m 1/4 Sikh) dominate all aspects of Punjab, also lets not forget the holy sites of Sikhs are spread from Bihar -Maharashtra -Himachal..

What are you expecting Sikhs to do?

Low key I feel like posters are wishing that sikhs/punjab becomes ISI next proxy after Kashmir

Coming up in subtle ways sometimes not so subtle way to share thier wishes in the midst of these protests...

Seems that way.. no one has seen more blood shed than Punjab in SC (maybe Bengal) and people keep wishing that again and again..

I‘m sure many Indians wish similarly for Pakistan, guess it will take 100 more years to be like Europe.

Reminds you of Jallianwala Bagh? Have you lost your mind?

No I haven't, should I now respond by asking if you have lost yours?

It's my perception of what I am seeing and my perception will be coloured by the history of previous atrocities against my people. I don't expect you to understand because these are not your people.

People of your religion are only your people?, coz Punjabis would also be your people irrespective of religion.

Well neither do I expect you to understand issues related to Punjabi Hindus and mixed religions as well in that logic.

Yeah, everyone has the right to protest except the farmers who are being barricaded into a corner.

What more do they want? Tractors are not even allowed on city roads according to traffic laws, so they were given more than it is their right. Of course, they are not the only ones. Others also deserve same rights.

Anyway, it is going to get interesting and some interesting things are going to happen.

Its a fashion. Everyone is a victim while they continue to break every rule.

This is like, my community does not like what the Government did. So let me and my people run to Delhi and shut down the city, attack law enforcement and raise my favorite flag on Red Fort on republic day. If you do not like what I am doing, then you are a bhakt and BJP supporter.

Main Indian opposition parties have boycotted the opening day of Parliament’s budget session in solidarity with farmers engaged in a two-month standoff over new agricultural laws the government refuses to repeal.

A statement by the Congress party on Friday said 16 opposition parties boycotted the president’s address to Parliament “in full solidarity with the agitating farmers, whom the Modi government is trying to defame”.

The address to Parliament by India’s President Ram Nath Kovind listing the government’s priorities for the budget was boycotted by several opposition parties.

The budget is to be presented on Monday.

Sanjay Singh, an Aam Aadmi Party member of parliament, told India’s ANI news agency his party “protested against the president’s address and raised slogans in support of farmers”.

“We were not allowed inside the [parliament’s] central hall, so we raised slogans at its gate. Farmers are being called traitors. So, we boycotted the address,” he said.

“Farm laws should be repealed.”

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said “it is really unfortunate that the entire opposition boycotted” the president’s address.

In his address, President Kovind also described the violence on Tuesday as “unfortunate” and said people in a democracy are expected to respect the rule of law.

Clashes break out
On Friday, clashes broke out between protesting farmers and a group of men shouting anti-farmer and pro-police slogans at Singhu border – one of the sites of the protests that started in late November. Authorities used tear gas and batons to break up the fight.

Farmers’ leaders accused local police and politicians of instigating skirmishes at the site on the outskirts of New Delhi.

In a standoff between the riot police and the farmers, authorities on Thursday night tried to clear a protest site at Ghazipur in the city’s east but most farmers refused to move and large numbers joined them.

Their leaders said any retreat would constitute surrender.

“Concerned over police high-handedness, thousands of farmers, who were not part of the protest, have now come to bolster our movement,” Rakesh Tikait, president of one of the largest farmers unions, the Bharatiya Kisan Union, told Reuters news agency on Friday.

Red Fort violence
On Tuesday, as India celebrated its Republic Day, tens of thousands of farmers riding tractors and on foot stormed the Mughal-era Red Fort in a brief but shocking takeover that played out live on news channels.

Clashes between protesters and government forces left one protester dead and nearly 400 police officers injured.

After the violence, three smaller groups among more than 40 farmers’ organisations disassociated themselves from the protest.

Police said they have arrested 19 protesters and detained 50 others for questioning under strict sedition and other laws, and top leaders of the farmers were being sought for questioning.

Traffic crawled on the outskirts of the Indian capital on Friday as authorities rushed hundreds of riot police to three of the farmers’ campsites hoping to convince the protesters to go home.

But the farmers have pledged to stay until the laws are repealed, but several rounds of talks with the government have failed.

The protests have been the biggest challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi since he came to power in 2014. He says the new laws are necessary to modernise Indian farming.

But the farmers say the new laws will turn agriculture corporate and remove a system that guarantees minimum prices for their produce.

New Delhi: A day after Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait broke down at Ghazipur, thousands of farmers participated in a mahapanchayat held in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar and extended support to the ongoing farmers’ protests at Delhi borders. While announcing to throw full weight behind Tikait-led protest at Ghazipur, the farmers of the western UP were seen heading in small groups towards the protest site. Kisans from Meerut, Baghpat, Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar, Moradabad and Bulandshahr reached the UP Gate today to join the stir.

Meanwhile, farmers protesting at the Singhu border announced to observe 'Sadbhavna Diwas' on Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary on January 30 and hold a day-long fast. The Kisan union leaders said the agitation is set to gain strength as a large number of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and other states are moving towards the national capital to join the protest against three farm laws.

Singhu border witnessed unruly scenes on Friday when hundreds of people, claiming to be ‘locals’, assembled and asked the protesting farmers to vacate the area as they were causing inconvenience to them for the last two months. However, the protests soon turned violent, as clashes broke out between the agitating Kisans and the ‘locals’. Delhi Police resorted to lathi-charge and used tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Commenting on the clashes between the 'locals' and farmers, the Kisan leaders said they "condemn tooth and nail" the violent incident and alleged that the so called "locals" protest was organised at the behest of the BJP. Swaraj Abhiyan leader Yogendra Yadav and CPI(M) accused the BJP and RSS of sending their 'goons' to foment trouble at Singhu and Tikri borders.

"The way the government has unsuccessfully tried to spoil the atmosphere on the Ghazipur border and the Singhu border for the last 3 days proves that the police and BJP-RSS are desperately plotting to kill this movement. Similar unsuccessful attempts were made on the Tikri border too," a statement issued later by Samyukta Kisan Morcha said.

The protesting Kisans had taken out a tractor rally in the national capital on Republic Day. The Delhi Police had given them permission to hold the parade on some selected routes, however, hundreds of protesters deviated from the designated routes and resorted to violence in many parts of the national capital, especially in the Red Fort area. Not only this, the agitators hoisted flags on the domes and placed the flagstaff at the ramparts of the national monument, where the tricolour is unfurled on Independence Day. Delhi Police have asked nine farmer leaders to join the investigation in connection with the violence at Red Fort.

Thousands of farmers have been protesting on the different borders of the national capital since last week of November 2020 against the three newly enacted farm laws -- Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today that his government's proposal to pause implementation of the controversial agriculture laws for 18 months - while negotiations to resolve a weeks-long deadlock with irate farmers continue - remains on the table.
The proposal - presented earlier this month after nine rounds of talks failed to provide a breakthrough - had been rejected by farmer leaders who insist on the scrapping of all three laws.

"During the All-Party meet PM Narendra Modi assured that GoI (Government of India) is approaching the farmers' issue with an open mind. The PM said GoI's stand is same as it was on January 22 - the proposal by the Agriculture Minister still stands," Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said.

"He (the Prime Minister) reiterated what (Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh) Tomarji said - that he (the Agriculture Minister) is a phone call away for talks," Mr Joshi added.

After the first rejection the proposal was refused once more last week - at the eleventh round of talks - leading Mr Tomar to declare "the ball is your (the farmers') court now".

Today the Prime Minister repeated that offer - at an all-party meeting before the presentation of the Union Budget on Monday.

The meeting took place a day after 20 opposition parties underlined their support of the protesting farmers - by boycotting the President's address to a joint sitting of parliament - and included a discussion on the Republic Day violence and, in particular, the incident at the Red Fort.

Opposition parties condemned the violence but also demanded an investigation into how "outside elements" had infiltrated the farmers' movement.

The farmers made similar allegations this week - blaming Punjabi actor and activist Deep Sidhu of instigating the clashes and planting a Sikh religious flag at the Red Fort.

Lakhs of farmers across India have spent the last several weeks demanding the centre repeal laws they say will leave them at the mercy of large corporate firms.

The tense situation exploded on Republic Day when groups of farmers and others clashed with police during a tractor rally that turned violent. Police had to resort to firing tear gas and lathi charges to control the situation. One farmer died and hundreds of cops were injured.

Referring to the violence at the iconic Red Fort, PM Modi said "the law will take its own course".

Delhi Police, tasked with investigating the violence, has issued notices to over two dozen farmer leaders, who called it a ploy to end their movement by blaming them for the chaos.

Earlier today the Home Ministry suspended internet services in the Delhi border areas of Singhu, Ghazipur and Tikri - epicentres of the farmers' protest - from 11 pm for a period of 24 hours.

"... it is necessary and expedient to order the temporary suspension of internet services in the areas of Singhu, Ghazipur and Tikri, and their adjoining areas in the NCT of Delhi from 11 pm on January 29 to 11 pm on January 31," the ministry notification said.

India cuts Internet near Delhi as hundreds of farmers begin hunger strike

SINGHU, India (Reuters) - India blocked mobile internet services in several areas around New Delhi on Saturday as protesting farmers began a one-day hunger strike after a week of clashes with authorities that left one dead and hundreds injured.

Angry at new agricultural laws that they say benefit large private food buyers at the expense of producers, tens of thousands of farmers have been camped at protest sites on the outskirts of the capital for more than two months.

At the main protest site near the village of Singhu on the northern outskirts of the city, there was a heightened police presence on Saturday as hundreds of tractors arrived from Haryana, one of two states at the centre of the protests.

“Many farmers’ groups have joined the protest site since last night,” said Mahesh Singh, a 65-year-old farmer from Haryana. “They have come to show their support and more farmers are expected to come in the next two days.”

India’s interior ministry said on Saturday internet services at three locations on the outskirts of New Delhi where protests are occurring had been suspended until 11 p.m. (1730 GMT) on Sunday to “maintain public safety”.

Indian authorities often block local internet services when they believe there will be unrest, although the move is unusual in the capital.

Farm leaders said the hunger strike by hundreds of protesters, primarily at Singhu and two other protest sites and designed to coincide with the anniversary of the death of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, would show Indians that the demonstrations were non-violent.

“The farmers’ movement was peaceful and will be peaceful,” said Darshan Pal, a leader of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha group of farm unions organising the protests. “The events on January 30 will be organised to spread the values of truth and non-violence.”

Agriculture employs about half of India’s population of 1.3 billion, and unrest among an estimated 150 million landowning farmers is one of the biggest challenges to the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since coming to power in 2014.

Eleven rounds of talks between farm unions and the government have failed to break the deadlock. The government has offered to put the laws on hold for 18 months, but farmers say they will not end their protests for anything less than full repeal.

In the past week, a planned tractor parade on Tuesday’s Republic Day anniversary turned violent when some protesters deviated from pre-agreed routes, tore down barricades and clashed with police, who used tear gas to try and restrain them.

Sporadic clashes between protesters, police and groups shouting anti-farmer slogans have broken out on multiple occasions since then.

Indian journalists accused of sedition for farmer protest reports

Several senior Indian journalists have been charged with sedition over their reporting and online posts about a farmers’ protest last week, sparking criticism from media associations.

The cases have been filed with police in at least five states against the journalists, who include Rajdeep Sardesai, a prominent anchor on the India Today television channel, and Vinod Jose, executive editor of the English-language Caravan magazine.

Filed by residents of the states, the cases allege that the journalists provoked violence during protests by farmers at New Delhi’s Red Fort on January 26 through inaccurate posts on Twitter and reports that police had killed a protester.

Tens of thousands of farmers have camped out on the outskirts of the capital for more than two months, demanding the withdrawal of new agricultural laws that they say benefit private buyers at the expense of farmers.

The government of Prime Minster Narendra Modi says reform of the agriculture sector will bring opportunities for farmers.

The protests turned violent on January 26 when farmers broke into the historic Red Fort complex, with one protester killed and hundreds injured.

Protesters allege the man died by police fire but the police denied shooting him.

“The accused tried to provoke the protesters for their political and personal gains by spreading false and misleading information online,” one complaint filed in Uttar Pradesh state said, echoing the language of the other filings.

Caravan Executive Editor Jose said his journalists on the ground heard from a witness and a relative of the dead man that he had been shot.

“This is an attack on free and independent reporting … Government wants only its official version to be published,” he said in a statement.

Journalist Mandeep Punia, who writes for Caravan, was also detained on Saturday at Singhu, one of the main protest sites. He was photographed being taken to court on Sunday, where he is expected to be charged on unknown offences, local media reported.

Indian media reports last week said television anchor Sardesai has been taken off air for two weeks by the India Today Group over his tweet in which he said a protester had been “killed allegedly in police firing at ITO”. Sardesai later retracted it.

A lawyer for Sardesai did not have any immediate comment when contacted on Monday.

The Editors Guild of India said it was disturbed that the police complaints had been filed under as many as 10 different legal provisions including sedition, promoting communal disharmony and insulting religious beliefs.

Anand Sahay, president of the Press Club of India, said it was not a coincidence that the cases had largely been registered in states ruled by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The club said “early reports” suggested the protester had been shot dead though later it appeared he was killed when his tractor turned over.

“In a moving story, things change on a regular basis. Accordingly, the reporting reflects the circumstances. It is criminal to ascribe this to motivated reporting,” the club said in a statement on Friday.

Global media watchdog the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called for Punia and another journalist who was reportedly also detained to be released immediately.

“Indian authorities should allow journalists to do their work without interference,” the CPJ tweeted late on Saturday.

Activists say press freedom has shrunk under Modi’s rule, which has been marked by attacks on and intimidation of journalists. The government denies intimidating the press.

Last year, India dropped two places to 142nd in the annual World Press Freedom rankings by Reporters Without Borders, which noted “constant press freedom violations, including police violence against journalists” and increased “pressure on the media to toe the Hindu nationalist government’s line”.

India protests: Police block roads into New Delhi to stop farmers disrupting budget day

Indian police have blocked main roads to stop protesting farmers entering New Delhi, as the finance minister prepares to deliver the government's annual budget in parliament.

It comes as several senior Indian journalists face charges of sedition over their reporting and online posts about last week's farmers' protests, sparking criticism of the legal action from media associations.

The farmers want the government to withdraw three new farm reforms introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in September, that they say will hurt their livelihoods and benefit large private produce buyers.

Internet and messaging services were blocked in several neighbourhoods on the outskirts of New Delhi where protests turned violent last week, while security was stepped up around parliament and other important government offices in the central district.

"The government has increased security to avoid any clash or violence when parliament is in session," said a senior official, who did not wish to be named in line with official policy.

"The idea is to keep everyone safe and avoid any escalation in tensions."

A farmers' procession turned violent on Tuesday when some protesters broke into the historic Red Fort complex, with one protester killed and hundreds injured.

On Friday, police used tear gas and batons to break up clashes during one protest, while in the last few days, more farmers have arrived along with their tractors to join their protesting colleagues at the three major protest sites near New Delhi.

Making his first public comments since the violence broke out last week, Mr Modi said in a radio address on Sunday: "The country was saddened by the insult to the Tricolor (Indian flag) on the 26 of January in Delhi."

"The government is committed to modernising agriculture and is also taking many steps in that direction."

The government claims the new laws will create new opportunities for farmers and it has invited farmer leaders for fresh talks to end the deadlock.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the protesters that stormed New Delhi’s Red Fort last week caused “insult” to the country and that his government will push on with sweeping agriculture reform, his first public comments on a months-long farmers’ agitation.

“The country was saddened by the insult to the Tricolour [Indian flag] on the 26th of January in Delhi,” Modi said in a radio address on Sunday.

“The government is committed to modernising agriculture and is also taking many steps in that direction.”

Tens of thousands of farmers have camped on the outskirts of the capital for more than two months, protesting new agricultural laws they say benefit private buyers at the expense of growers.

A tractor parade on Tuesday’s Republic Day turned violent when some protesters deviated from predetermined routes, clashing with police and breaking into the historic Red Fort complex in the capital.

The demonstrators swarmed the 400-year-old World Heritage-listed fort, raising religious and farm union flags, though they did not remove the national flag from the top of the monument.

One protester died and hundreds, including policemen, were injured in the clashes.

Farm leaders say they were not responsible for violence, that it was caused by a minority of those on the parade, and that they will resume their talks with the government.

Modi told opposition party leaders on Saturday an offer to freeze the laws for 18 months still stands, according to a government summary of the meeting.

Agriculture employs about half of India’s labour force, and unrest among an estimated 150 million land-owning farmers is one of the biggest challenges to Modi’s rule since he first came to power in 2014.

Targeting journalists
Modi’s comments came as police arrested at least one journalist and filed complaints against others, stoking fears of a media crackdown over the reporting of the protests.

Mandeep Punia, who writes for the English-language Caravan magazine, was detained on Saturday at Singhu, one of the main protest sites.

He was photographed being taken to court on Sunday, where he is expected to be charged on unknown offences, local media reported.

Since Tuesday, at least five complaints have been registered against Indian journalists and an opposition Congress member of parliament on several allegations, including sedition and criminal conspiracy.

Global media watchdog the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called for Punia and another journalist who was reportedly also detained to be released immediately.

“Indian authorities should allow journalists to

Anumber of Twitter accounts, including those belonging to Kisan Ekta Morcha and the Caravan, are now blocked in India, apparently, after the Indian government sent a legal notice to Twitter. The accounts that have been blocked by Twitter in India include Kisan Ekta Morcha, The Caravan India, Manik Goyal, Tractor2twitr and jatt_junction. It seems Twitter has received a legal notice to block several Twitter accounts belonging to farmers' organisations, activists and media groups that were tweeting on framers protests against the farm bill.

Update: The accounts blocked in India have been unblocked. It is possible that while Twitter India blocked the accounts during the day but after the news and outrage on social about it, the decision was reviewed by the US team in Twitter HQ and the accounts were unblocked.

At the time of updating this article, The Caravan magazine, official account of Bharti Kisan Union, Tractor To Twitter, actor Sushant Singh's account and Kisan Ekta Morcha accounts were back live again.

While Twitter has not officially commented after it blocked, or unblocked, the accounts, India Today Tech has learnt that there was a rethink a few hours after the accounts were blocked.

India Today Tech learns that Twitter had blocked the accounts in the interim in response to a valid legal request from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology pending discussions with them. During the meeting with the concerned officials, Twitter has conveyed that the content is free speech and newsworthy. Protecting public conversation and Transparency is fundamental to the work we do at Twitter, the content has been unblocked, sources revealed.

Government officials said that Twitter had been asked to block over 250 accounts or tweets that were using a specific hashtag. The MEITY (IT Ministry) has blocked around 250 Tweets and Twitter accounts which were using #ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide hashtag and making fake, intimidatory and provocative Tweets on Saturday that was January 30, officials said. Of this, India Today learns, there are around 120 accounts and 230 tweets. Sources said that the government flagged these tweets and accounts o prevent escalation of law and order in view of the on-going farmer agitation.

This has been done on the request of Ministry of Home Affairs and law enforcement agencies to prevent any escalation of law and order given the on-going farmer agitation, added officials. However, it is worth noting that some were not using that specific hashtag among the blocked accounts.

For now, it is not clear which specific accounts have been blocked. Twitter users are still discovering that a number of accounts that were tweeting information related to farmers' protest are now showing a blocked in India message. Given that Twitter uses regional blocking of accounts, the message being shown is: "Account Withheld @thecaravanindia's account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand."

Similar messages are appearing on other accounts that have been withheld in India.

India Today Tech reached out to Twitter India to comment on the accounts being withheld. In an email, the Twitter spokesperson said, "Many countries have laws that may apply to Tweets and/or Twitter account content. In our continuing effort to make our services available to people everywhere, if we receive a properly scoped request from an authorized entity, it may be necessary to withhold access to certain content in a particular country from time to time. Transparency is vital to protecting freedom of expression, so we have a notice policy for withheld content. Upon receipt of requests to withhold content, we will promptly notify the affected account holders (unless we are prohibited from doing so, e.g. if we receive a court order under seal)."

Twitter has not responded or provided details of the legal notice it received for now. The blocking of Twitter accounts comes days after the MHA ordered blocking of the internet in and around the sites where farmers are protesting on Delhi border.

On its global website, Twitter explains that instead of blocking accounts, it usually withholds them in a particular country when it gets a legal notice. The company notes, "In our continuing effort to make our services available to people everywhere, if we receive a valid and properly scoped request from an authorized entity, it may be necessary to withhold access to certain content in a particular country from time to time. Such withholdings will be limited to the specific jurisdiction that has issued the valid legal demand or where the content has been found to violate local law(s)."

Let me get this straight, the world's largest democracy is blocking twitter accounts now.

Yup, democracy is an illusion, censorship is a reality.

What PR mess?

The days of leftist media controlling and setting the narrative is over.

Except a couple of media houses, most are now firmly opposed to the Farmer protests after the 26th January violence.

Certain journalists were caught red handed spreading fake news on twitter to fan more violence their and twitter's time has come to face the law. No amount of leftist outrage will save them.

Indian govt rules on the back of the support of Indians not international leftist rags who are desperate to some how set a narrative and control it.

that greta girl proves to be dumb. One of the demands of the farmers is to removing the fine for burning crops, they want to continue burning the crops causing pollution. And they are already depleting the ground water by growing paddy where it is not meant to grow. And this dumbo claiming to care about environment is supporting those who are ruining the environment.

Not just blocking Twitter accounts, the despot has also blocked Internet in these areas for over a week now.

So Kashmir isn't the only place where the despot has blocked Internet, Delhi the capital of India too has its Internet blocked in some parts.

No. She is Rihanna, Khalistani Canadian Jagmeet Singh's friend.

Bro I feel like alot of people in the sub continent dont know how much clout Riri has.

She has zero clout in India. Indian govts are chosen by Indian people, not by Riri or any other foreigner.

The Canadian PM tried to support the khalistanis, the Canadian high commissioner was demarched. Thats how much India thinks of Canadians. Let alone some singer.

Rihana is canadian? I knew her name and assumed that like all english singers, she is american too. Just improved my pop culture GK a bit.

Same old cr@p. This and that guy/gal doesn't have clout in India blah blah blah. Not sure what people like you do here since you are more interested in who and which face is behind the thought than the actual thought. You should spend more time on Facebook, look at profile pictures of people, their locations and then hit the like/dislike buttons. :inti

Joshila bhai seems to downplay everything. Rhianna is a global popstar I'm sure if she shares something people will take notice. it might not seem like it but it makes india look bad on the global scale. Joshila bhai doesn't understand that perception plays a big role...

Rihanna has great fan following in India too so I don't know what this joshila guy is talking about. He himself knows so much about Rihanna's friend(not even a boyfriend lol) which I am sure even die hard fans of her don't know. Shows how popular she is. :inti

honestly it's kinda sad that whenever india gets criticized these bhakts make connections to Pakistan, islam or khalistan.

Pakistan is BJPs go to shot when the going is tough. China, to an extent as well. I wont be surprised if the military head comes one day and randomly declares "We are warning Pakistan" just as a diversion. It works every time.

Kangana aunty's rant against Rihanna feels like dog barking at a passing Rolls Royce which is not aware of dog presence

This. I pity 56" and his bhakts who are defending atrocities on our farmers just to save the *** of their sanghi masters.

What atrocities? They brought it upon themselves. Rules were bent to allow the fascist farmers, but they showed their namakharami by indulging in violence. They live on subsidies and loan waivers and don't pay income tax. 50% of working force and hardly any contribution to GDP. They are dharti par bojh.
