Indian Filmmaker slammed For Poster as Kali with LGBT background, Says "I've Nothing To Lose"

A poster for a documentary by filmmaker Leena Manimekalai has sparked strong reactions on social media over the way it shows Goddess Kali. The filmmaker has been accused in a police complaint of hurting religious sentiments.

Leena Manimekalai, who was born in Tamil Nadu's Madurai and is based in Toronto, had shared the poster of her film on Saturday. The poster shows a woman dressed like Goddess Kali and smoking. A flag of the LGBT community is seen in the background.

In a complaint to the Delhi Police and the Home Ministry, Ajay Gautam, who heads the "Gau Mahasabha", has called for an FIR against the filmmaker and a ban on the film.

"I have nothing to lose. I want to be with a voice that speaks without fear of anything until it is. If the price is my life, I will give it," Leena Manimekalai tweeted in response to attacks on social media.

The film was part of the "Rhythms of Cananda" segment at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, according to a tweet by the filmmaker.

"Super thrilled to share the launch of my recent film - today at @AgaKhanMuseum as part of its 'Rhythms of Canada'. Feeling pumped with my CREW," Leena tweeted.

As users slammed the poster, the hashtag #ArrestLeenaManimekal trended on Twitter. Many demanded strict action against the filmmaker and called for the poster to be dropped.

"This must not be tolerated on the name of freedom of expression," said one post.

"Please take action, this is demeaning Hindu gods," another post said.

"Now why is the Supreme Court not seeing anything, why this double standard?," a Twitter user asked.

In the backlash, Leena Manimekalai restricted comments on her Instagram account.

"The film revolves around the events that take place one evening when Kali appears and strolls the streets of Toronto. If you see the picture, don't put the hashtag 'arrest Leena manimekalai' but put the hashtag 'love you Leena manimekalai'," she wrote in Tamil on Twitter.

LGBTQ crowd should leave religions alone.

They want to do their thing, that's their business. But, don't try to associate it with other religions.

These Urban Naxals have made it a habbit of mocking Hinduism almost everyday and are quiet unapologetic about it. Sometimes I wonder how these people sleeps well at night with so much hatred inside.

After her arrest was trending in twitter whole day yesterday, she put some garbage tweet in tamil which roughly translate how Kaali was roaming around the streets of Toronto etc. She was the same lady who was crying a river for Zoobear's arrest, praises Rahul Gandhi, calls everyone that disagree's with her a Sanghi and how of idea of India has failed. Basically same ideology - minority appeasement, hate hinduism, promote urban naxalism.

Just go back to my post where I said the fault lies only and only on liberal hindus. If they themselves mock hindusim, why would people from other religion wont? How right was I.

Oh and by liberals, I meant the fake ones. In reality they are basically bigots wearing the mask of liberalism.

Good thing is - people like her and people that belong to that qabal (urban naxal group) are few handful ones. 99% of Indians have rejected likes of her...its the remaining 1% cleanup is needed (with bulldozer).

LGBTQ is a cult movement.

I have said it before, I will say it again, and continue saying this : Liberalism is a disease and it is destroying humanity as we know it.

Old tweets from the same lady. Secularism in modern India :14:

These so-called liberals are a cancer to society.

What is the need to bring in religions in your crap ?

The LGBT community can do whatever they want for all I care, just don't involve religious figures in your nonsense.

People like you keep getting outraged because you think your gods need defending and mediocre people like her keep getting the attention they don't deserve.

She obviously doesn't believe in anything holy about these figures and is just using them. Because, at the end of the day, despite all those filters used in the poster, the quality of this 'performance' seems as random and artistic as the cultural events held in every other street corner in India.

Interesting though to note that, nothing like the gay community to provoke and bring Hindus and Muslims together :)

I was told Hindus can be LGBT, nothing in the religion says otherwise?

LGBT is on the rise in India.

You have a Delhi Queer Pride Parade this year?

What is the term Urban Naxal. Just because you heard something fancy on a news channel by a loud-mouthed idiot, you keep harping on it. People who stand for fos don't necessarily agree with what's being said, rather just want words to be replied with words.

This lady is a troll. Trying to rile up hindus, no doubt about that. But let her be, the only reason she keeps riling up hindus is the attention she gets after that.

The ironic thing is religious hindus (or in Nupur case, religious muslims) think god needs their saving. All so powerful gods can't even protect themselves that they need a Raju sitting in Bihar expressing his outrange on internet and giving fake death threats on twitter to such trolls. Idiocy at it's finest.

Hindu lady mocking her own religion. There would only be greater uproar if a non Hindu had done it particularly a Muslim.

And no matter if a Muslim or non Muslim had mocked Islam they would have been beheaded by now.

No they wouldn't! There are many Muslim's like me who indulge in things Islam does not allow yet my head is still intact! Hindu hypocrites constantly mock Islam then go and look for jobs in the Gulf coz there own country is a mess.

So I was in Dubai discussing Islam with this devout black African and some scholars. We had strong disagreements over certain issues yet i walked away comfortably without even a threat being issued to me. Last people to lecture others on religious tolerance are the Indian's....i assure you had a Muslim mocked Kaali the RSS would not have been so quiet about it. Ha! See how RSS fundo's regularly threaten Muslim's every day with beheading and forced conversations. Now with Eid-Ul-Adha coming up they are certain to make more fuss about it just looking for fights.

Not sure what's the issue is with the poster. Goddess Kali is offered alcohol in many places in Bengal, so smoking should be a non issue, and supporting LGBTQ movement is great...

Most likely because Hindu's don't have a problem with the poster but Hindutva does. It is the same difference that Islamist's have with Muslim's.

It is crude to identify Kaali with alcohol. Kaali puja happens in midnight and sometimes the bamacharis, the Tantrik worshippers used to consumed it in old days during Shamsaan Kaali puja. The goddess herself was not given alcohol.

Wine is consumed in church. Why don't this filmmaker shows Jesus with a glass of wine in Canada film festival? Lets see if she has the guts and how brave is she.

Also, alcohol is different from smoking. What was the purpose of showing a hindu deity with a ciggerrate other than looking for some cheap attention.

This lady is a periodic hater of the ruling govt, a supporter of clown like Rahul Gandhi and a hater of hindusim. One just have to look at her previous posts:

I would like you to tell us about them please.

I thought what she did was in line with Hindu values of today (tolerance, flexibility, etc) and I thought most hindus wont find it offensive.

Hindu Gods are pro-LGBT. Lord Krishna is always shown as a very feminine man. Lord Shiva has his wife as Ardha Naareshwar (Half of Shiva is his wife). There are LGBT characters even in Mahabharata.

I don't understand the outrage there. Kaali is the angry female form of Shiva & Shakti. People who do not know about their own religion getting outraged over nothing.

I am glad I was not imagining things. I have known Hinduism to be very pro-modern values and accommodating, and I really admire these traits.

It seems to me Hindus are picking up on the rigidity inherent to Abrahamic faiths now. This might be a reaction to how Muslims have defended their beliefs in recent years and Hindus are, for some reason, feeling obligated to do the same now, whether warranted or not.

Modern Hindus are snow flakes. They emulate Abrahamic faiths as they feel embarrassed about their own scriptures. Anyone who has seen the depiction of Gods and demi-Gods (Avatars) of Shiva or Vishnu can easily see that there is nothing straight in Hinduism.

Hinduism is just a collection of Ideas from various parts of Subcontinent. It was given a religious form after British took over.

Interesting. A Hindu friend told me there is no such thing as you cant eat meat in the scriptures either and that ancient hindus used to eat meat all the time. Is that true?

Indian Culture is thousands of years old. The Vedic people from North-West(Pakistan/Afghanistan) part of subcontinent probably consumed meat. The people from Modern day India followed several philosophies like Shaivism (Worship of Shiva), Buddhism (Buddha's way), Jainism, Shaktism (Kali/Durga) and so on. Buddhism and Jainism stressed on Ahimsa and Vegetarianism. All of these cultures existed from Afghanistan to Burma).
Hinduism is the marriage of Vedic and the afore mentioned philosophies. I believe modern Hinduism we see today is less than 1000 years old. Even the evil Caste system is less than 1000 years old.

What is Ardhnareeshwar? Do you know?

Krishna is shown as feminine? Where?

Please mention the LGBT character in Mahabharata. Then we can discuss the context.

That is most astounding. Makes me really wonder what original or pre 1000 AD ca "Hinduism" was like. Very interesting.

Shakti is half of Shiva.

I can post pictures of Krishna. He is always depicted with no facial hair and his mannerisms are quite feminine.

Shikandi.

Not to forget Mohini. Lord Vishnu becomes a women to have a child with Lord Shiva.

Also Arjuna following a curse, who spent some time living as a transgender person.

Always thought people in the middle east and Europe were uptight and in far east and the Asian subcontinent a lot more relaxed, and this shows in their approach to religion too. Buddhism and Hinduism are a lot more relaxed and accommodating than the rest. I dont know if most people would label that as a good quality or not, but I certainly appreciate it. Christians, Jews and Muslims are still busy trying to convince themselves that homosexuality is a lifestyle choice and you cannot be born gay. Transgender question is still taboo, etc.

It makes sense when you think about the environment where the ideas & religions are born. Religions born in harsher climates tend to be very rigid as every member of their society based on gender must fulfil a fixed role to survive. There is no room for deviants.
Religions and ideas born in fertile lands tend to be more relaxed. There is enough opportunity to explore more and hence more accepting.
Of course the above is just my opinion.

That's actually exactly what I was alluding to. I feel we are products of our environment. and the earlier civilizations were even more influenced by the environmental conditions around them than we are today, thanks to technology and what not.

They had to face the elements a lot more than we do. I think the biggest example I can give is that of pork being haram in Islam. It is haram because its meat rots quickly in the heat of the middle east and was the cause for a lot of health issues. The general consensus was that since its such a dirty animal, hence its prone to such infections and its meat is risky to consume, therefore, its declared haram in Islam and Judaism.

In Europe and cooler areas, the seat of Modern day Christianity, that was never the issue, so for them its all healthy and normal, and permissible to consume.

LGBTQ crowd should leave religions alone.

They want to do their thing, that's their business. But, don't try to associate it with other religions.

Many Hindutvas on this site argue that Hinduism is not a religion, it is a way of life.

That is most astounding. Makes me really wonder what original or pre 1000 AD ca "Hinduism" was like. Very interesting.

It is very debatable. I have watched a few documentaries on ancient travelers from China who visited India. In their dairies, they never mentioned caste system.

This hurting religious sentiments thing is doing my head in. What is really so offensive in that picture?

Not to forget Mohini. Lord Vishnu becomes a women to have a child with Lord Shiva.

This I'm not aware of. Mohini I thought was the avatar Vishnu took on to bedazzle the asuras when they had that immortal nectar thing. There's a pretty graceful danceform in South India (mostly Kerala) called Mohiniattam which is believed to stem from this story.

People from North India may not be aware of South Indian mythology. But Lord Ayyappa is Called HariHara Suta (Son of Vishnu & Shiva). When Vishnu takes up the form of Mohini a beautiful female, Lord Shiva gets enchanted and has a Son with Vishnu. The Son is supposed to kill an Asura as the Demon got a boon which says that only the Son of Vishnu and Shiva can slay him.

I know it is confusing as even I did not get the story completely.

It seems the story is mentioned in Buddhist Texts too. So they have their own versions. Shiva Purana has its own version too. Its mythology after all.

When different philosophies amalgamate, it will create loads of contradicting stories and adds to the confusion.

The pancha maw Kars are offered to the Goddess by the bamachari(followers of the left handed path ) tantriks. They are Madya(alcohol), Meena(fish), Mamsa(meat), Mudra(coin), and Maithuna( sexual intercourse).

What does her supporting Rahul Gandhi have to do with this. He's a clown, a pappu right? But still triggers nightmares in you lot :)) What's the real issue man.

Answer anikrc1's questions if you can. Or do you need help using Google, Mr Hindu vidwan.

There are versions of Goddess Kali. Some Hindus do offer meat after animal slaughter to Goddess Kali. I thought everyone knows this.

In Hinduism, people offer to their Ishta Devata whatever they can offer. It includes Meat, Fish, Flowers, Milk, Fruit etc.
The Brahmin version of Kali is pure vegetarian and supposed to be clean.

Is that for the preachers or for any and every person who wants to be considered a Hindu?

There is no uniformity or rules in Hinduism when it comes to worshipping Gods or Goddesses. Brahmins have their own version of Worship, Vysyas have their own version, Kshatriyas and Shudras have their own version.
Except of Brahmins and Vysyas, both Kshatriyas and Shudras tend to offer meat as an offering for their deity. Not all do it, but some indeed do it.

Is the consumption of meat permissible to them then as well? Apart from Brahmins and Vysyas, the other... I hope I am using the right term, castes can consume meat and alcohol and such?

No, they are not for all hindus. As you know there are different styles of worshipping in Hinduism. This particular way is called Bamachar( left handed path), which is usually considered very hard to properly follow, but never the less it was very popular in Bengal upto early 20th century. There are still followers of this path, but they are very less in numbers now.

Of course. They all can eat meat except for Brahmins. I do not know about alcohol. If you go to village side in India, you see all kinds of things offered to Gods. Gods that we may have never heard of. There is freedom to worship your own Kula Devata (God of Profession/trade), Ishta Devata (God of your choice).

There are no rules.

Interesting so some stuff might be offensive to some Hindus and while perfectly fine with some others. Very different from Islam.

So I am assuming you are contending the same thing that the flexibility means Hinduism is open and accepting of the LGBTQ++ and the picture might not be offensive to all Hindus?

Because, quite clearly, it does seem it is offensive to some for sure!

What percentage of India's population are Brahmins? Dont you think the cow slaughter ban in some states then, is a bit of a kowtowing to a certain section of Hindus who have always claimed caste superiority?

Actually that's not true for all Brahmins. Bengali Brahmins have always eaten meat and fish. Chicken was prohibited for a long time though.

May be 1 or 2%. They are more concentrated in states like UP I believe. In South India, they are a very very small minority.

So with so much divergence across India as to what constitutes religion, why the need for a national identity based on hinduism? Is it a religion in the first place? If not, why is it important to convey across areas where it is barely even seen as relevant in the modern age?

They are getting trapped by BJP.. the entire narrative of Right wing is currently based on victimhood and constant comparison.

Instead should focus on links of BJP with Udaipur,Kashmir violence- as usual a missed opportunity, BJP is again able to change thr narrative.

Legends and epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata are common among all Hindus. Details may slightly vary. All local stories and deities are incorporated. None are rejected.
There is a story for every caste, tribe that can be traced to the Epics of Ramayana or Mahabharata. This binds all Hindus in India.
Freedom of Worship has been the strongest pillar of Hinduism. No rule is enforced on any one. Hence you see a lot of weird stuff too in Hinduism in certain pockets of the country. They have their own myths and stories for those weird rituals.

I am not talking about weird rituals, I am talking about beef bans in entire states of India. Why would you need to enforce a weird ritual with an actual written statute?

Wow.. seriously?
Seems like they run the whole show. Why would a whole state pass law and ban cow slaughter for just 1 or 2% of the population?

It’s so funny that for Muslims, the courts decide whether hijab is necessary but for Hindus, cow slaughter is a big sin when only too 1-2% find it offensive?

I apologize, I didn’t want to derail this thread but I definitely learnt a lot about Hinduism and helped clarify some negative perceptions I have had about it.

Chalo ji...all of this falling apart very quickly. Mahua Moitra's days (aka Paap ka ghara) is coming to an end abruptly.

Now this is surely changa si (if there was ever one). :))

What does her supporting Rahul Gandhi have to do with this. He's a clown, a pappu right? But still triggers nightmares in you lot :)) What's the real issue man.

Answer anikrc1's questions if you can. Or do you need help using Google, Mr Hindu vidwan.

It has to do with everything. There are certain common traits among these urban naxals - 1) Hates BJP 2) Hates hinduism 3)Support Rahul Gandhi 4)Minority appeasement.

I have not heard about this lady before this incident and then looked up into her twitter feed. Same ideologies as I mentioned above.

Didnt Rahul himself said once that most people goes to temple for eve teasing? Then he turned janeyudhari brahmin and was visiting temples before Karnataka election? Would you not call that type of person clown? Jaisa leader pappu...waise unke followers.

Check BJP...one thing they never compromised on in their ideology. Now whether you like that ideology or not is different story but they had same ideology in 1989 when they had 2 seats and now even with 340 seats its still the same. If you like that ideology, vote for us or choose someone else as ours is not for sale. That is the mantra for BJP and the reason why it is the biggest political party in the world. Parties like congress, shiv sena, TMC, AAP are turncoats and hence people also turning away from them.

As far as brother anikrc1's question is concerned...I already answered what I knew. I have never seen the goddess herself was offered alcohol. The issue is...the intention of the filmmaker here (whom you obviously wont criticize). What was the puroose of that poster showing the deity smoking? She was not looking to become artistic like Satyajit Ray but was simply taking a dig at hindu's in Agha Khan film festival in toronto to gain cheap publicity. If you peep into her tweeter...you will see many anti hindu tweets in the past as well. She knows she can only take dig at hindus and get away it with it bcoz our community is divided and has people like yourself, anikrc or champ pal etc. She wont even dare to try it with other religion bcoz they have unity. Wine is offered in church...will she have the guts to show Jesus with a glass of wine in Toronto film festival? No. She will be deported back to Tamil Nadu next day.

Shakti is half of Shiva.

I can post pictures of Krishna. He is always depicted with no facial hair and his mannerisms are quite feminine.

Shikandi.

No facial hair doesn't means someone is feminine. Lord Krishna is nowhere shown as feminine.

Shikhandi was given a boon to be born as a eunuch so that he can help kill Bhishma, else killing Bhishma was impossible.

Not to forget Mohini. Lord Vishnu becomes a women to have a child with Lord Shiva.

Again a myth.

Mohini avatar of lord Vishnu was taken to make sure that Amrit is taken by the Devtas only and not Asurs.

Its an avatar how does ot promote LGBTQ

She has said that Goddess Kali is the symbol of liberty and woman empowerment to her. I don't know how is that disrespecting. I mean you can't interpret god to your liking? And why do you want to compare Hinduism with Abrahamic religions? God in Hinduism is not a distant entity. We can get angry with them , complain to them and even mock them. Want examples? Just hear some Ramprasadi shyama sangit, or the hordes of folk songs, where Menaka is angry with Shiva and complaining that he is a beggar and can't take care of Parvati. As for sexuality, let's just say Kumarsambhabam can probably turn Freud's cheeks red. So why do you want to forget our rich traditions of Hinduism and make it a copy of the bland Abrahamic faiths ?

In reality, she was trolling and wanted cheap attention. Then when calls being made for her arrest, she found herself in a corner and said all these rubbish about women empowerment etc to fool people like you. In reality her intention was to insult hindusim. What has liberty and woman empowerment got to do with smoking? LOL. And this is not the 1st time she has done that...she also had derogatory things to say about Lord Ram...check my posts before where I posted those tweets.

Also, who are you to tell me how should I interpret Hinduism? When did I ever compared it with Abrahamic religion? But are you saying bcoz we are not Abrahamic religion, we do not have the right to feel offended or get angry?

In this thread even Pakistani posters are saying she should not have done that and insulted a faith but here we have a hindu asking fellow hindus to accept it bcoz we are not Abrahamic religion. Well done...you just proved my point :14:

LGBTQ crowd should leave religions alone.

They want to do their thing, that's their business. But, don't try to associate it with other religions.

What about religious people who are LGBT?

I guess something got lost for my way of phrasing it. The comment about interpreting God was about her and not you. As for smoking, a woman smoking in public was a symbol of woman empowerment because it hurts the popular sensibilities. And Pakistanis are thinking it's insulting because they don't have much about hinduism. You are a Bengali right? Do one thing, read krishnananda Agambagish's book about the visualisation of Goddess Kali, and you will see that this image is nothing but mild to that.

There are many stories about this. You are only talking about 1 version. Read about Lord Ayyappa.

Hinduism of old was the most accepting of all when it comes to freedom of worship or no worship at all.

Avatar or not, Men masquerading as women was accepted according to Hindu scriptures. They were not shunned or ostracized or killed for their choice of lifestyles.

Twitter removes filmmaker Leena Manimekalai’s 'Kaali' poster tweet

Social media platform Twitter has pulled down filmmaker Leena Manimekalai's tweet about her documentary "Kaali", which is currently at the centre of a controversy, in response to "a legal demand".

In the said tweet posted on July 2, the Toronto-based director had shared the poster of "Kaali", which depicted the titular goddess smoking and holding an LGBTQ flag. "This Tweet from leenaManimekali has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand," read a message in place of the original post.

It is unknown when the tweet was taken down by the microblogging site. On Tuesday, the Delhi Police and the Uttar Pradesh Police filed separate FIRs against Manimekalai over the controversial poster. Further, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa has urged the Canadian authorities to take down all "provocative material" related to the film after it received complaints from leaders of the Hindu community in Canada about the "disrespectful depiction" of Hindu gods. "Kaali" was showcased as part of the he 'Under the Tent' project at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto.

Snowflakes everywhere. Kali, the biggest symbol of woman power in India has to now follow the rules set by some of her followers.

Intention of the filmmaker was questioned who was a regular hindu hater as one can see from her previous tweets about Lord Rama. No one is questioning whether Goddess herself was symbol of power or not.

You are deliberately acting naive.

If Lord Shiva can smoke weed, so can Kali.

I don't know about Bengal politics. I was only commenting on this one specific picture.

If Right wingers start whining about every picture, you will play right into the hands of the far left.

What is this new urban naxal term online Indians keep mentioning recently
All these are the ones who don't kowtow to this despotic regime, the ones who refuse to be browbeaten by state sponsored murderous gangs.

This.

Have our gods become so weak that they need to be protected?

And lo and behold, the one who brought this term on this thread doesn't even live in India, knows nothing about us and doesn't even want to come back to face the realities of today's India.

I am talking about whats mentioned in the vishnu puran. What's your source?

Masquerading as women? Do you understand whats the concept?

Can you show any reference in a shastra that says Maa Mahakali smoked weed?

I am not interested in your opinion regarding this but what shastras say.
