A young Indian soldier has shot dead a commanding officer in Indian-administered Kashmir after an altercation, the army has confirmed.

The army has not given further details. However, some junior officers told the BBC that the argument was over a mobile phone.

Media reports say the soldier was told off for using a phone while on duty, and the device was confiscated.

Officials told the BBC that police and the army were investigating further.

The incident comes amid concerns about morale in the armed forces.

Why India defended Kashmir 'human shield' officer
Is India losing Kashmir?

Earlier this year, India ordered an investigation after a soldier's video complaining about the quality of food went viral.

The army also came under fire for tying a man to the front of an army vehicle and using him as a human shield during polling in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The officer in charge at the time was later rewarded, which some analysts saw as a move to boost flagging morale among troops there.

Indian army sources have told the BBC that morale among soldiers stationed in the Kashmir valley is very low. Many soldiers are becoming increasingly uncomfortable with their role in the region, saying they fear they are effectively becoming an army of occupation.

Kashmir is disputed between India and Pakistan and Indian-administered Kashmir has seen a fresh upsurge of violence in the past few month.

It's just a reminder that soldiers are to be respected regardless of where your loyalties lie. Not all soldiers in IOK are rapists or murderers, some have a conscience and are merely pawns of their leaders. Respect to those who see the situation for what it is.

It's nice to hear some soldiers are having moral issues and seeing their role as part of an occupation.

Indian authorities have no respect for their soldiers, using them to oppress others is the worst thing an army can do.

Yes Soldiers must be doing something great to earn appreciation from the enemy camp.

Why do you feel this sentiment exists?

Shame for the Indian Union where the Soldiers are being forced to carry out an illegal occupation by the Politician's. The Soldiers are well aware about that the people in Kashmir do not consider themselves to be Indians and the Indian Army doesn't deserve to occupy Kashmir by force. Hence the growing frustration among the Soldiers and rightfully so.

Good number of soldiers are selected not on the basis of merit, Tbh some of them even runaway during training periods and rest of the them are actually jealous of their friends who are enjoying their life in their native places. Anyone capable of paying 2 to 3 lakhs of rupees can actually join army. There are still lakhs of youngsters who are genuinely interested in joining army but they are sidelined.

Illegal?

Kashmir is the heart of Hindu homeland and home to many Hindu shrines. It belongs to India.

It's also very sad so many Indian soldiers are taking their own lives each year and many of these were deployed in occupied Kashmir.

Heartwarming to see a few Pakistani brothers genuinely concerned and worried about general mental health of enemy soldiers.
Bade dilwale indeed.

It belong to the people who live there. They don't seem too happy at a butcher from Gujarat calling shots on their behalf.

Kashmiri pandits will return back one day there.... insha allah.....india is not even giving right now bhutanese land to china then forget about giving indian land and that to pakistan .....

This is what happens to an Army full of murderers, rapists, butchers and torturers. From North to South to East to West all Indians take pride in what this military full of cowardly manlets are doing in Kashmir. Even Bollywood is funding these army missions.

The country is rotten from top to bottom no wonder whole of India of their free will voted for a butcher of his state so it can be translated country wide which is in progress.

It is no surprise. Every decent human would do the same considering the guilt and shame they would face internally from such disgraceful violation of human rights and denial of freedom.

Good to know that Indian army has no policy to brush these kind of incidents under the rug. They could have easily done that.

Inshallah, they will. But do remember, they were a minority before they left and will be a minority when they return. I would personally prefer them to return because from what I've heard and what is evident from the OP article, it softens even the hardest of hearts the plight the Kashmiris are suffering. They deserve to return to their homeland and with as much army presence as there is right now, they should feel safe.

lies. thats the ganges (and its surrounding gangetic plains). last i checked the ganges isnt in kashmir. although the main river after which india is named after, which runs its entire course through Pakistan, is the Indus.

Encouraging signs, but now to address the Amnesty International revelations:

"Till now, not a single member of the security forces deployed in the state has been tried for human rights violations in a civilian court. This lack of accountability has in turn facilitated other serious abuses."

Minar Pimple, Senior Director of Global Operations at Amnesty International

In India for human rights violations and genocide against minorities you are given medals and honored by the country....

“It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool, than to talk and remove all doubt of it.”

Full sympathies with the Indian army men(barring the few idiots responsible for the tying the Kashmiri guy to the jeep).
What they are doing in Kashmir is not the job of the army and proof of the complete failure of the civilian apparatus.
