What a ridiculous and shameful statement to make.

Chandigarh : Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday blamed colonial and foreign rule in India for the lack of respect towards women which was leading to crimes against them.

Without mentioning the barbaric rape of an eight-year-old girl child in Kathua recently or the rape controversy involving a BJP lawmaker in Uttar Pradesh, Mr Naidu said that the Indian tradition had always given a lot of respect to women.

Addressing the 31st Convocation of the Kurukshetra University, in the historical town of Kurukshetra, around 100 km from Chandigarh, he said that as per the Indian tradition, the country is called 'Bharat Mata' (Mother India) while major rivers were given female names and worshipped.

The vice president said that it was shameful that despite such traditions, women were not getting the respect they deserved and that foreign rule, over the centuries, was responsible for this.

Urging the youth and students to shun violence, he said that issues could be resolved peacefully and without damaging public property.

"Democracy allows meaningful debates on all pertaining problems and only constructive debate can provide answers. Protest should be peaceful and no one has the right to destruct public property. Violence cannot be a solution," Mr Naidu said.

He asked students to be disciplined and have an outlook for the development of the country.

Pointing out to a direct linkage between education and employment, he asked students to acquire knowledge and skill to take up new opportunities.

"Education is not just for employment. It is also for enhancement of knowledge and enlightenment," he added.

Lol,every other day there is a gem from Indian leaders.

Pakistani politicians also make some stupid statements but less frequently.

But honestly, what a shameful statement from such a high ranking official.

Clearly seems to have missed his own advice.

Feels like Saudi leaders speaking without the benefit of oil.

Lot of truth there. In foreign culture your wife is just your wife..but in our Indian culture, she has a higher status as dharmpatni..elevated to higher virtues and righteousness instead of just conjugal relationship.

Everything is whiteman’s fault. Nothing to do with our sex starved perverted youth.

If India was a robot, nuts and bolts would be falling out over the last few weeks.

At the very least, the guys up top should hire a PR person - they just don't cut it by themselves, and in this age of social media their statements are like a lamb awaiting slaughter.

It was the victorian era degraded values which defined modesty and shame for women, something we are still suffering from. From a civilization where sex was just another physical act like breathing and eating, it became taboo thanks to the foreign cultures. Being gay was not an identity, but the backward victorian era laws declared it taboo..and our penal code still has it as defined by those backward people.

There is a lot of truth in what our learned VP is saying, but obviously the convent educated indian youth feel offended when the deeds of their cultural masters are pointed out.

One thing I never understood was why Indians have clung on to Victorian values when the British themselves moved on a century ago. If they thought those values were past their sell by date, what made Indians think otherwise?

If anything Bollywood is to be blamed far more for this lack of respect he is on about. When you glorify rape in your movies and all sorts of illicit relations then don't expect ladies to be respected. The audience especially youngsters are greatly influence by their so called hero's. Of course India will never attack Bollywood coz it makes them money and is one of India's major exports. Anyone who dare questions Bollywood on Indian TV is quickly attacked and told to shut up.

He attacks colonial rule for corrupting India yet his people mock and imitate the west more then any other foreign country. They've killed their own culture but hold the west responsible for it such is the stinking hypocrisy of these people. The west is not forcing their ladies to dress in micro mini's or low cut tops are they?. The west is not telling them to glorify rape, lust and sleaze in their movies. The culture of the subcontinent is such that ladies who dress in such a manner are easy targets for so called road side Romeo's who are often illiterate. The owner of a store must take responsibility to lock up at closing time. It is stupid to leave it open hoping that no burglar will break in.
