An Indian village has banned Muslim practice including sporting beards, praying in public or giving children Islamic names.

In the wake of the death of a female calf, allegedly at the hands of a Muslim boy, the elders council, or panchayat, in Titoli, Haryana, made the decree - while baring the youth from the village for life.

The panchayat, held in the Hindu-dominated village on Wednesday, also barred Muslim residents, numbering around 800, from offering nawaz (prayers) outside their homes.

A mob had attacked the house of a Muslim family in the village in August , accusing them of killing the calf. Two were arrested under the Prohibition of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955. But it was unclear how or why the calf had been killed.

However, lawmakers in the north Indian state said they would look into the matter - despite the Muslim community of Titoli apparently respecting the diktat.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Rohtak, Rakesh Kumar told The Hindu newspaper: “It is unconstitutional. I will speak to the village sarpanch (leader) in this connection.”

Rajbir, a local Muslim leader, said the community accepted the decisions of the tribal council to maintain harmony and that they were not austere Muslims any how.

“We have been keeping Hindu names since Partition and do not wear skull caps or keep beards. Since there is no mosque in the village, we travel around 8-10 km to Rohtak city to offer namaz on Fridays and other occasions” said Rajbir, who goes by one name.

Residents' Association president Suresh Nambardar, who was present at the meeting, said members of all castes and religious communities from the village were present.

He said apart from the decisions over the prayers and the youth, reportedly named as Yameen, it was also decided that a plot of land in the middle of the village used for Islamic burials would be taken over by the panchayat and a plot given to Muslims outside the village for burials.

However, the tribal council made no ruling on other Muslim practices such as almsgiving (Zakat) and fasting during Ramadan (Sawm).

Mr Suresh claimed Hindus and Muslims had been living in harmony in the village for several generations, and blamed "new settlers from Uttar Pradesh" for disturbing the peace.

A secular, alliance group, Ekta Manch, condemned the decisions. Its president, Shahzad Khan, said they were unconstitutional and that the Muslims were forced to accept their fate for fear of reprisals.

The district's Deputy Commissioner of Police, Yash Garg, said that there was no report of any communal tension or resentment among the members of any community residing in the village.

“Still, if any such unconstitutional diktat has been passed by the panchayat, we will look into the matter and take appropriate action,” he added.

These sound like the sort of Muslims which RSS thugs would love, yet it's never enough.

RIP Female Calf. Gone too soon.

I'm gonna guess it'll be buried where the Muslims used to bury their dead before.

Looks like even the Indians have barred offering anything to Nawaz.

This is even worse than China cause India is officially a democracy.

"Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Rohtak, Rakesh Kumar told The Hindu newspaper: “It is unconstitutional. I will speak to the village sarpanch (leader) in this connection.”

Clearly shows it is done by the village council. Not an Indian law.

First time I am hearing that Muslims carry Hindu names in any part of India. Muslims always have Arabic names. Some may still carry surnames related to their Hindu past and that's all.

Where are the police or are do they fall in line with extermist villiage leaders? Its good if the law stops this but there must be many villages where such things never make the news.

A cow is just an animal nothing more.

I feel sorry for poor guys like Rajbir. They have stripped away everything Islamic from their being to please extremist Hindus but they will never be accepted.

Ironically if they had moved to Pakistan, they could love India from afar, still not be accepted by Hindus, but keep their Islamic names.

What say you Pro-India Pakistanis?

Don't worry folks Indian Muslim's love India! They are living great awesome lives there by changing their names and giving up on fasting during the holy month, salat and everything else to please their Hindu masters! When even the likes of a Shahrukh Khan must have something Hindu about him the poor Muslim's of the country are no one at all. What these Muslim's need to do is keep hating on Pakistan, keep blaming Pakistan and change to having Hindu names as well until there remains nothing Muslim about them. It's all good!:ashwin

LOL
Pakistanis calling Indian Muslims for keeping Hindu names. 99 percent of Indian Muslims still keep Arabic names. Now compare that to the ONLY Hindu cricketer to come out of Pakistan. Yes the one Hindu who probably had enough money and security to even keep a Hindu name but was still scared to keep a Hindu name.

Dinesh Kaneria oops I mean Danish Kaneria

Dinesh vs Danish means nothing at all, it is a matter of western script translating from eastern. rahulrulezz with a mighty bicep probably has it's own inherent message, no doubt rulezz is somehow some sort of Hindu script to depict that.

You serious?? Ours are not Arab but Muslim names, get it?? In India your Muslim's are forced to keep Hindu names, see the difference?. Where did you get this nonsense of Kaneria being afraid to keep a Hindu name? Makes no sense what you are saying here. He is a good and proper Hindu not a half Hindu half Muslim like Shahrukh. By the way Anil Dalpat is another former Hindu Pak cricketer so Danish is not the only one. You got that wrong as well. There are many Pakistani Hindu's like Deepak Perwani and late Justice Bhagwandas, there are many Hindu's in Karachi in particular. We don't need to brag about them like you do about your oppressed Muslim's.

Dinesh and Danish are two very different names, the latter is a common muslim name.

Why make things up? Before Kaneria, Pakistan had Anil Dilpat who kept wickets for a while. Also there are quite a few politicians and business people in Pakistan who have Hindu first names. it's not just famous people either, I personally know people in Pakistan who are Hindu and have Hindu first names.

Pakistan has a lot of issues to criticize especially when it comes to the treatment of minorities so you don't need to make stuff up.

Either you’re a liar or you’ve always tried to avoid Muslims or you were sheltered from real world.

Get your facts straight.

Sounds like a more humane version of Chinese "re-education" camps.

Quite a shame, but thankfully the government has intervened, and this won't be tolerated. Having said that, I have noticed this increasing anti-Muslim sentiment in Haryanvi youth and society in general, and that's sad.

Danish can spell his name anyway he wants. He is certainly not answerable to Indian people at all. Many same names are spelt differently like Amir is also used by both Hindu's and Muslim's. Some spell it as "Amir" where as others do as "Amer". It does not mean that one is spelt exclusively for one community making the other one wrong. Just cause Danish chooses to spell his name against Hindu-Indian norms does not mean he is oppressed in Pak for being a Hindu!:)):))

Jahil state filled with ganwars and wannabe Punjabis.

I guess Muslim world should not feel so disgruntled by this. Since you have boatload of countries practicing such nondiscriminatory laws against non- Muslims.

How are the Muslims in this village to blame for what other "boatload" of countries are doing?

Bigots have a strange way of justifying themselves and their world view. Whataboutery is one of their stronger tools in this regard.

As Jinnah is reported to have said "The Muslims who are against Pakistan today will spend their lives trying to prove their loyalty to India" Well said Sir :14:
