Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari on Wednesday said that India's actions in occupied Kashmir were tantamount to "war crimes done by a rogue government".

Mazari was addressing the second day of a joint session of the parliament held to discuss Pakistan's future course of action in the wake of India's decision to revoke Article 370 of its constitution, stripping occupied Kashmir of its special status.

At the start of her address, Mazari said that in light of India's actions, the Pakistani people can call the Indian government a "rogue government".

"India has committed a war crime," she said, adding: "We are obligated to tell the whole world that India has committed an internationally recognised war crime."

She added that the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, which recognises Kashmir as a disputed territory, had been violated.

Furthermore, Mazari said that the Simla agreement, which states that India cannot unilaterally change the status of Kashmir, had been violated.

"The violence India is carrying out is clearly ethnic cleansing and genocide," she said, adding that the international community should be asked where the UN's right to intervene had gone. She noted that the international body had accepted the right to intervene if there was a fear of a genocide taking place anywhere in the world.

Mazari noted that even the Indian Supreme Court had in 2016 ruled that the status of Kashmir could not be changed.

"Whichever way you look at it, India's actions are war crimes committed by a rogue government."

Additionally, the minister said that the use of cluster bombs along the Line of Control (LoC) by India was also in violation of a convention regarding the use of inhumane weapons that India and Pakistan were parties to.

"We should draw the international community's attention to this," she said, adding that there was already a strong opinion in the international community regarding the matter.

"Pakistan is demanding that the UN Human Rights Council immediately form an independent investigation committee that will check the human rights violations conducted by Indian occupying forces in occupied Kashmir."

Mazari said that Pakistan had written to the president of the UN Security Council and UN Secretary General António Guterres. She said that the next step would be looking at the option of an emergency meeting of the UNSC, adding that the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should also be used as an option.

"How will Muslim countries stay silent in the face of the violence taking place against Muslims?" she asked.

She said that Prime Minister Imran Khan's message presented in the joint session on Tuesday had made it clear that Pakistan would not remain silent.

Both National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser and Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani took turns presiding over the joint session.

While addressing the joint session, former president and co-chairperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari said that in his opinion, the Kashmir incident was as serious as the "East Pakistan tragedy".

He said that it was important to look at history to understand this, adding that PPP had been formed for the cause and sacrifices of Kashmir.

"Do you think India doesn't know that a tailor-made democracy is in place in Pakistan? Do they not know about the economic situation here?"

"They know everything."

While referring to Prime Minister Imran's address at the joint session yesterday, Zardari said: "Our 'select' said that they [the Indian government] have a fundamentalist mindset. We all know that."

He said that he didn't want to oppose the premier too much as everyone had to stand with the people of Kashmir.

The former president said that if this had happened on his watch, his first flight would have been to Abu Dhabi followed by a flight to China, Russia and Iran, where he would ask the leaders to show solidarity with Pakistan.

"I am hopeful that Modi's thought process will itself lead to the disintegration of India as he has buried the secular India that Nehru and Gandhi had envisioned."

"History is being written and history will remember that I said that this will happen."

'Pakistan was not ready for India's action'
While addressing the session, PML-N's Raja Zafarul Haq said that this was a serious matter that should be paid attention to.

Haq said it appeared that India had prepared to take the action regarding occupied Kashmir, adding that it had also been included in the election manifesto for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

But, he said that it looked like Pakistan was not ready for India's decision to revoke Article 370.

While referring to Prime Minister Imran's statement during Tuesday's proceedings of the joint session, Haq said that when certain politicians suggested that the matter be taken seriously, the response they received was "Should I attack India?"

During yesterday's sitting, Prime Minister Imran, in response to Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif's speech, had asked the parliament to advise the government on what to do next.

"What measures have I not taken? Our Foreign Office has held meetings with ambassadors, I have reached out to other countries [and] we are approaching international forums. What does he [Sharif] suggest I should do, launch an attack on India?"

Meanwhile, Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) chief Sirajul Haq suggested that the government call an international conference in Islamabad. He added that a group of over 120 members including opposition leaders in Pakistan should be formed and sent around the world with regards to the matter.

"Don't just look at how America or the West will look at your decision, do everything Kashmiris are demanding of you right now," he said.

Shireen Mazari criticises Foreign Office on Kashmir strategy

Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari on Saturday criticised the Foreign Office in failing to carry forward Prime Minister Imran Khan’s narrative on Kashmir.

In an astonishing rebuke of the FO, she said that it had “let Kashmiris and Prime Minister Imran Khan down” in their struggle for the Kashmir cause.

Addressing a function in Islamabad, Mazari said that it was through the prime minister’s “single-handed efforts” that the narrative surrounding Kashmir changed in the global arena.

“If the Foreign Office had carried forward the prime minister’s narrative, the situation would have been vastly different today,” said the minister.

Mazari said that no matter the world’s politics, had the Foreign Office taken action, the world would certainly have listened to Pakistan on the issue.

“But our diplomats chose leisurely hotel stays, dressing in three-piece suits and heavily starched clothes and speaking over the telephone,” she added.

The human rights minister questioned how a country like Burkina Faso “has more diplomatic clout” than Pakistan, as it managed to get a resolution passed by the United Nations Human Rights Council against police brutality in the United States in the wake of protests against George Flyod’s murder.

Mazari said we have to move away from traditional diplomacy and for that we need to adopt modern methods.

“The Kashmiri struggle is a just struggle. Indian occupation forces are using the debasement of women as a political tool,” said the minister.

She said our response in the matter needs a major revamp if our voice against such atrocities is to go to the far reaches of the world.

It’s quite Ironic when Pakistan criticize other nation(s) of violating Human Rights. In today’s time when country like China can be appointed to UN Human Rights body then Pakistan’s criticism of India shouldn’t come as surprise.

Wasn't Shireen Mazari Pakistan's recent ambassador to the UN? The time she showed a picture of a young girl from Gaza and claimed that it was from Kashmir?
I always used to think that Pakistan's representatives in the UN and other international bodies were smarter and more articulate than India's. That they managed to keep the Western world on the side of Pakistan on the Kashmir issue right up to the late 1990s shows how competent they were. India's representatives were pretty worthless and uninspiring in comparison. Most were bumpkins who couldn't even speak English properly.

Boy, how times have changed!

Nope.

India's latest measure is an intensified crackdown on Kashmiris on social media especially on twitter. Many of the people that i know have been arrested for simply speaking their minds. Many have been released after getting them to sign bonds. And many have been falsely accused of cyber bullying and harrassment (this is the official reason given). Now we cannot even talk on social media. There is no vent. We can't breathe.

Pakistan considers people of Kashmir to be Pakistanis. So this is why Pakistan always speaks for Kashmiris rights.

Pakistan is more Chinese than the Chinese.

So what about the Muslims in China? Is it ok what is happening to Muslims in China, I guess it is since Pakistan is over a barrel getting pounded by the Chinese.

What about minorities of Pakistan who are their own citizens, who are Actual Pakistanis. Why haven’t they done anything to protect them? Why are Ahmadis are killed for no reasons.

Since the Musharraf era Pakistan has been trying to improve conditions of minorities. They have gave them a quota in parliament, they have been repairing mandirs and gurdwaras, they even had a national "minority day".

As far as Ahmadis are the most discriminated group in Pakistan. The majority of the population does not see them as Muslim. I have on this very forum stated many times how the treatment of Ahmadis is shameful.

Pakistan themselves have horrible human rights history, so it makes them hypocrites to cry over human rights violations done by India.

If Pakistan complains about religious human right violations in India or western countries, then you have a point.

However like i said people in Pakistan consider Kashmiris to be Pakistanis. And as they have no voice right now, Pakistan has a moral responsibility to raise the Kashmir issue. As long as they are not sending militants in Kashmir, and raising the issue peacefully, i dont see a problem with it.

Is Pakistan responsible for every Muslim group suffering in the World????

The reason Pakistan raises the Kashmir issue is that the people of Pakistan consider Kashmiris to be Pakistanis.

I just have to laugh at Muslims, double standards much?

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the Indian government had failed to isolate Pakistan internationally, adding that the "narrative has shifted on Kashmir" and that the people of the occupied territory will get the right to self-determination.

The foreign minister pointed out how Prime Minister Imran Khan, in his first speech as Pakistan's premier, had highlighted the issue of occupied Kashmir.

"You can compare the speeches of Nawaz Sharif and before that, Asif Zardari at the UN and see for yourself how often the word Kashmir was used in their speeches," he said.

Govt brought down current account deficit: Shaikh
Highlighting the performance of the finance ministry, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Abdul Hafeez Shaikh said that Pakistan was faced with a mountain of challenges when the government came to power.

He stated that Pakistan was faced with a huge current account deficit which the incumbent government had reduced drastically due to its sound fiscal policies.

The finance adviser said that the government of Pakistan, civil and military leadership both, had reduced their budgets in its bid to practice austerity in times of crisis.

Shaikh said that the government had not borrowed from the State Bank of Pakistan throughout the current year.

"The biggest point of the prime minister's package was that cash was given to ordinary people who were impacted [by the coronavirus]," he said, referring to the Ehsaas Emergency Cash Programme.

Shaikh said that for the first time in Pakistan's history, Rs250bn were provided to the people of Pakistan "in every city and goth". "This money was provided to 100 million people," he said.

He said that the government had not imposed any new tax in budget 2020-21, adding that the first month of the fiscal year brought about good news.

Shaikh disclosed that Pakistan's exports grew by 6% in the month of July, adding that these were a result of the government's policies and budget measures.

"The FBR collected Rs300bn [the amount] was23 times more than their internal estimates," he said.

He spoke about the performance of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) stating that international publications such as Bloomberg were praising it.
