India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) looks set to lose assembly elections in the eastern state of Jharkhand, counting trends showed on Monday.

Outgoing BJP chief minister Raghubar Das has conceded defeat, the NDTV news channel reported.

The Hindu nationalist BJP's loss of a state it has ruled since 2014 is being seen as a setback for the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Three of the five rounds of voting in Jharkhand were held at a time of nationwide protests against a new citizenship law introduced by the Modi government.

"It is wrong to treat the Jharkhand results as a referendum on the citizenship law. State assembly elections are fought on local issues," BJP spokesperson Gopal Krishna Agarwal said.

Modi's BJP, which won general elections in India in May with an enormous majority, has lost state elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra since January 2018.

The bolded parts probably explain the sudden war mongering from India/BJP. It seems a war against Pakistan is the only thing that could get them some votes.

No evm malfunctioning here? Man you so called liberals are impossible. During the thrashing of May 23rd...its always about evm, how the EC and Supreme Court is under BJP now etc. etc. But suddenly a Jharkhand state election loss and bhangra started :yk

You sure? In Lok Sabha election, all 7 Delhi seats was won by bjp though. Unless you saying the perspective of Dehlites changed from May 23 to now.

They changed their perspective within few months in Delhi after 2014?
Most places are voting one in national and one in state, except South somehow they are consistent most probably Aiadmk will be knocked out..

2014 was different as Kejriwal formed his new party. But there is anti incumbency now against AAP. Lets see how it goes.

Personally I hope BJP wins in Delhi but even if they loose, its okay. Delhi CM is a dummy anyway since centre covers most of the thing. The main aim for BJP is Bengal 2021. Its a do or die battle for Modi/Shah. Cant simply allow another term for Mamta Banerjee.

Are you from Delhi? BJP Delhi is one of BJP's most weakest areas ever, Congress still has clout in most areas compared to BJP with respect to state but lets see.

BJP is not winning in Bengal though unless they trigger the biggest riot of their life.

BJP will go extra mile and will do anything to get bengal. Its the topmost priority for them. Entire NRC/CAB bill was to win in bengal in a certain way.

I went to the PP medicine counter to buy one for you, but what a pleasant surprise to see who was selling it :srt

BJP didnt loose in Maharastra though. They were the single largest party. Its just that Shiv Sena suddenly decided to ditch BJP after election, forgot everything that Balasaheb stood for and decided to ally with an oppurtunist Congress. In political terms, it is called as unholy alliance - an alliance between 2 parties with different ideologies. Politics is all about ideologies and these sort of alliance never last long as was the case with Karnataka. Maharastra govt will fall in few months and BJP will be back to power again.

Unless anything of that happens, its all words, BJP is in center so enjoy that, State wise you guys are not.
India is back to coalition govns thanks to the PM able to do nothing significantly for GDP and jobs inspite of such a huge mandate twice.

So, all of a sudden, there is a realisation in this forum that we are all not jingoistic and Hindu fundamentalists?

Per logic of most PP-ers, after Kashmir, Ayodhya and the new citizenship bill, nothing less than a 100% vote for BJP would have been surprising, since we are all right wing. But but now now, why did BJP lose especially it was a given on this forum that BJP had hacked EVMs as well ...

This is your wishful thinking. I hope Delhi people are not idiot to chose the lunatic Manoj Tiwari.

Well said! How could a party be led by a nautanki called Manoj Tiwari is beyond me! Only thing he indulges while being state BJP prez is to abuse Kejriwal, sing paeans of event manager and yes, stay in jhuggis very now and then!

I'm a Delhite myself and would wish anyone to win than sanghis! They're a cancer for India and we should pull all stops to cure India of this.

During campaigning for Jharkhand assembly elections, both event manager & mota bhai tried their best to lie through their teeth, invoke so-called national pride, lie incessantly as is their favorite hobby and still couldn't get anywhere close to the tally what they were at during last assembly elections.

I think BJP coming to power in Delhi would be the best thing to happen for Delhi-ites.

Think about it, Delhi is the most over populated city in the world, people from all over India come to Delhi looking for better opportunities. With BJP in power those opportunities will vanish, jobs will perish and migrants from other states will leave Delhi to other places where they can find better opportunities.
Population will drastically reduce, air quality will improve, adulterated food which we eat (injected food) will disappear as normal food can be enough for everyone. Quality of life in general should improve.

:inzi2

It appears to me that people are voting seperately in state and general election. Though they are very happy with Modi in the center (2 landslide victories suggest that), they are not very thrilled with local bjp leaders. Hope BJP project Gambhir as their CM face in Delhi.

Yeah, we desperately need Delhi's population to come down!

BJP lacks good local leaders. Modi can win you elections but if you don't perform in the 5 years you get, he can't help you win again. Besides I've often heard the refrain that people will vote for local leaders in state elections, and vote for a national leader in the general elections.

Although for those doing bhangra over this, the vote share difference is only 2 percentage points lower for BJP and is actually slightly higher compared to their own tally in 2014. This should tell you that people are still voting for BJP in similar proportions. :)

Such are the vagaries of first-past-the-post system. Depending on how you game the pre-poll alliances and seat distribution, you can either win an absolute majority or come up well below the majority mark with the same vote share. Meh you win sometimes, you lose sometimes.

Bjp lost Raj and MP in 2018, came back to sweep Raj and almost sweep MP in LS 2019. So all is well.

Fought maha Elections with SS, won 105 seats, largest party and second largest was SS with 56. SS backstabbed. Its Karnataka situation.

Jharkhand,no party holds Jharkhand twice in a row. So pretty much expected.

Yeah, we desperately need Delhi's population to come down!

Won't happen, ideally population of entire India should come down. Also, other cities should be developed so population can be distributed among 20+ cities rather than just 2 cities currently (Delhi+Mumbai).

Regarding elections, Delhi misses someone like Sheila Dixit. Compared to the options we currently have, she was brilliant. Now we have Manoj Tiwari, Kejriwals, Gautam Gambhirs etc fighting for CM spot. The standards have reduced such drastically, Delhi seems to be heading backwards in terms of leadership.

True.

A bh@kt was asking for Gambhir to be announced CM candidate for Delhi. lol, he can't be serious. The guy can't even discharge his MP duties properly and he is suitable to lead Delhi? Well, there is no limit to a bh@kt's delusions....

PS: I just find it very strange that he is allowed to commentate in test matches at least...That involves him to be present at that venue for 5 consecutive days...Can an elected representative afford to do that several times a year? That's why it was such an idiotic decision of us Delhites to choose so many nobodies at the altar of fake nationalism...

I see. Nothing to do with BJP's dwindling support among tribals and lower castes.

But I agree with this merry-go-round thing. Nationally, Cong+Allies had two terms. Now BJP has two terms. Next, someone+allies two terms and so on :)

You must be having plenty of this. Since LS 19 and now Karnataka.

Yeah actually.

Your leader is such a great salesman he convinced me to stock a whole lot of it and threw in a couple of promises at a discounted rate. I left PP's medicine store, bright and optimistic, but soon felt I'd been conned, by the time I crossed the road.

Then a relieving thought came to me - that Masterji's followers will be needing a lot of this in due course.

I'll be glad to distribute it around. For free. Unlike Masterji :cobra
