Injustice to Afghanistan cricket when they have to depend on BCCI, one of the richest boards in the world, which cannot afford ground covers?

It's a shame that Afghanistan cricket, struggling for resources, must rely on the BCCI, a financial powerhouse, yet faces match delays due to preventable ground conditions.

Afghanistan was about to play a Test match after a long time against New Zealand but day 1 was washed out due to a wet outfield without a toss happening and day 2 is also getting delayed now due to a wet outfield, cruelly denying them a historic moment on the world stage

The sun was shining all day on Day 1, but the previous rains had soaked the field, and the ground staff couldn't ready the ground in time.

ICC must take immediate and decisive action to address such inequalities that unfairly hinder the progress and opportunities of emerging cricketing nations. The lack of basic ground cover at a major venue, leading to such significant delays, is unacceptable in the modern era of the sport.

This is the condition of the ground atm. Afghanistan will be feeling like they have been robbed here.

Yea.. this is a venue exclusively used for Afghanistan matches. Not a regular venue. Not a single test played here. Afghanistan played Ireland in 2017/2020 in T20/ODI series. That's it. I don't expect them to dramatically improve this as it si not used even for domestic matches. They could have played at the Arun Jaitley stadium.

PCB must step in and save the series.

Don't think India cares that much after Taliban takeover.
But the current Afghan cricketers deserve this

'A Huge Mess, Never Coming Back': Afghanistan Team Slams Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Greater Noida Stadium's Woeful Conditions

Deplorable conditions at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex, subpar drainage, a sodden outfield and woeful facilities played spoilsport as the opening day of the historic one-off Test between Afghanistan and New Zealand was called off on Monday without a ball being bowled. Rain had affected the buildup to the Test, the first between the two nations, with New Zealand not being able to complete a single practice session properly.

Apart from overnight shower, rain did not affect the venue throughout Monday. But the absence of modern facilities left the inexperienced ground staff struggling to prepare the field as the sack of saw dust saw more action than the players on the opening day.

The umpires conducted as many as six inspections throughout the day. Several New Zealand players too came out to assess the field, including skipper Tim Southee, all-rounders Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra also ventured onto the pitch to evaluate the conditions.

But the mid-on and mid wicket area seemed cause of concern while there were also several patches inside the 30-yard circle. At one point with the sun shinning nice and bright, it looked like the match could get underway but the hopes of that were dashed when Kane Williamson tread wearily towards the pitch around 2pm IST.

Even Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott looked unimpressed as the groundsmen struggled. The Super soppers inexplicably came into action only after 1pm.

The day's play was eventually called off at 4pm. The toss has been scheduled for 9am tomorrow and the remaining four days will have 98 overs each starting at 9.30am, instead of 10am.

Ahead of the Test, the ground staff had resorted to using table fans to dry the ground for Afghanistan's training sessions.

The absence of modern facilities extended beyond the field itself, impacting operations off the pitch. The venue lacked a proper media stand and adequate seating arrangements for fans.

Additionally, the accredited media faced significant inconveniences, including a lack of water, power supply, and access to a female washroom. The fans too had no idea what was going on as there was no public announcement system.

There was poor communication and complete mismanagement between the stadium authority and the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB).

"This is a huge mess, we are never coming back here. The players are also unhappy with the facilities here," an ACB official said.

"We had spoken with the concerned people well in advance and were assured by the stadium guys that everything will be in order (pertaining to the media facilities)," he added, While the Test is not a part of the World Test Championship, it is an ICC affiliated tournament.

The stadium, managed by the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority, had hosted a pink ball Duleep Trophy match in 2016.

However, it had been banned by the BCCI in September 2017 due to match-fixing during corporate matches. No BCCI affiliated match has been hosted here since.

The stadium has served as the home ground for Afghanistan in the past.

"Nothing has changed since we came here. It's not improved one bit," another ACB official said.

Ahead of the Test, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi had urged the BCCI and ACB to arrange "a good home venue" for the team "India is our home, and when we host teams, other nations have played more cricket here," Shahidi said on the eve of the one-off Test against New Zealand.

"Hopefully, we will get a good venue here in India and if we restrict ourselves to one venue, it will be effective for us. Hopefully, the ACB and the BCCI will get us a good venue," he had said.

While the stadium doesn't fall under the UP Cricket Associating, it will be interesting to see weather BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla gets thing in order.

Indians call Afghanistan their 2nd team and brothers and what not. and this is how they are treating them. Not just Afghanistan, New Zealand will be worried about this thing as well.

Caterer uses water from washroom to clean utensils at Greater Noida stadium

The Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Chosen to host the historic one-off Test between Afghanistan and New Zealand, the cricket venue was scrutinsed over substandard infrastructure after rain washed out the opening day of the Test on Monday. On Tuesday, photos of unhygienic conditions on the ground raised more questions.

It has come to light that members of the catering team at the venue were washing utensils in a washroom. India Today accessed photos of a member of the catering team washing a bowl in the washroom, near the urinal, on Tuesday. The absence of modern facilities at the venue caused operational hindrances. The media at the venue lacked proper seating on the opening day and even water and washroom facilities were substandard.

Notably, play was washed out on Day 1 of the one-off Test due to a wet outfield. Overnight rain led to more damp areas on the outfield and the start of play was delayed until 3 pm IST on Tuesday. The woeful drainage and the lack of preparedness for rain have left the one-off Test in a state of limbo.

Wait, what injustice? ACB opted for this.
Indians call them their brother and their second team no????

Brotherhood should be fruitful for them. This kind of treatment is not what they would have expected. Toilet water etc etc.

That's some audacity to say "This is a huge mess, we are never coming back here''.

Somebody needs to let the thick head of ACB know that they're not invitational chief guests. And are relying on others to carry them around.

That facility doens't seem international standard, BCCI could have done a better job there.

Brotherhood has been fruitful enough for them, some of their top stars earn more than the richest Pakistani player and they are probably a better limited overs side too.

Yet they are not able to play a red ball game after such a long time at their so-called home due to poot management by BCCI.

I would love to take an opportunity to make fun of indians and bcci.

But this isnt their fault.

Stadiums are rented out. If ACB opted for this stadium without checking the conditions etc, its ACB's fault.

ACB obviously choose this stadium due to lower cost etc. They could had rented out any stadium in any country, and they choose this dump...

I would had preferred had ACB opted for Pindi, as it was close to KPK, accessible for alot of the local afghans that live in kpk and in islamabad.

However, the fact that indians use washroom water to clean utensils is still hilarious and shows how bad things are in india

What a guy hashmat is. His statement is ridiculous. It is not bccis job to find yoh a stadium.

They will give you options, if you can afford the rent, than you can play simple.

They are more than welcome to play in Pakistan but UAE would have been the best.

Tbh it is more injustice to NZ as they may end up at 3 instead of being the finalist of WTC 2025

Looks like this Test is heading toward a draw. This should hurt NZ's ranking points.

They were offered the Kanpur Green Park stadium. A proper test venue. They refused.

This stadium isn't under BCCI or UPCA.

This ground lost its BCCI accreditation back in 2017.

Still ACB went ahead and hired it. Why?

When the last international match was played on this ground?

This could be damage control from BCCI. There are mixed reports here is both sides

"According to a report by The Indian Express, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) wanted one of the stadiums in Lucknow or Dehradun to host the one-off Test vs New Zealand. However, their requests were turned down by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), stating that both stadiums were hosting the T20 leagues of their respective states. Hence, the Greater Noida stadium was the only option left to host the match.

A report by the Sportstar also states that Kanpur, Bengaluru and Greater Noida were offered by the BCCI as venues to ACB, but they chose Greater Noida because of the city being close to Delhi, which makes it a closer flight from Kabul."

Either way whatever happened when the stadium is selected you can't have person cleaning dishes next to someone peeing. That is just crazy.

So basically you are saying that according to the story presented after Kanpur was rejected by ACB the BCCI said you guys can play where you want and left them to negotiate with random agencies to find a spot to play in.

I'm sorry but doesn't seem likely.

But that's what happened.

ACB decided to negotiate and hire a stadium that is banned by BCCI.

Afghans being ungrateful forgetting everything the BCCI has done for Afghanistan and the Afghan players.

BCCI should tell the Afghans to go off and play their games outside India if they don't like it.

Even this is a blunder by Indian authorities. This situation shouldn't have been allowed to occur.

Indian authorities are not babysitters of ACB.

They offered 2 test center grounds. ACB rejected and hired another. That's their fault.

The Indians managing the ground are at fault too. That's some shoddy work from them.

What I want to know is why is Afg playing its home matches in India and not in Afg? Taliban not allowing, is it?

Cost cutting. Lower rent and now ACB are blaming others

However, doesnt justify using toilet water to clean utensils.

Im surprised that BCCI is allowing other boards to do direct deals with other agencies. Very unprofessional.

And anyway what you are saying hasn't been confirmed.

I don't think Taliban would mind but it's unlikely anyone would tour.

They have some ambitious plans to build stadiums in Afghanistan.

Any country going to play there would indirectly be recognizing the Taliban so I doubt anybody would tour. Maybe Pakistan Bangladesh or UAE.

I suppose in a sense that India has indirectly recognized them too.

I guess Greater Noida stadium is temporarily a Taliban enclave for the duration of the game as it's under their control. The people washing dishes in toilet water should tread carefully.

Technically BCCI offered them other fields too. These geniuses choose this as an option. Should have gone with the Bengaluru one.

This is a private stadium which doesn’t even come under any state association or BCCI and has been banned by BCCI from hosting any tournaments associated with BCCI.

In an interaction with SportStar, ACB official Mehnazuddin Raz spoke about the entire controversy surrounding the AFG vs NZ match.

Raz said, “Kanpur, Bengaluru and Greater Noida were the three venues offered by the BCCI, and we chose Greater Noida because it’s closer to Delhi and connectivity from Kabul is better.” He added, “This was the best venue for us in terms of logistics, and that’s why Greater Noida was chosen.”

Jagran News Journalist:

Afghanistan Cricket Board people and Shahid Pathik Stadium manager did not take Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) into the loop for Afghanistan New Zealand match.

UPCA called several times to say let's have a meeting. We will give you whatever you need. We have experience, it will be easy for you. But later the calls were not even picked up.

UPCA said that the match should be held in Green Park because UP League is being held in Ekana.

This stadium comes under Greater Noida Authority. Some of its people and some people from Afghanistan Cricket organised a match in Greater Noida during the rainy season to make money.

They took away workers from Labour Chowk to manage the ground. Have you ever seen such a thing?

A WhatsApp was sent to a person from UPCA after which the Super Surper was made available to him by the association.

It's all their own making. They had option to use better stadiums instead of the one banned by BCCI

Yeah I was thinking what? Go play in Kabul then..oh wait you can't. You don't have the luxury of choosing where to play here. Beggars can't be choosers

What I want to know is why is Afg playing its home matches in India and not in Afg? Taliban not allowing, is it?
I don't think that's the case. NZ as well as other teams I don't think will want to go to where Taliban government is ruling.

Can't Afghanistan play their home games in Malaysia or something?

I remember Malaysia used to host international cricket. 2006 tri-series, for example.

Another option would be Sri Lanka or even Bangladesh.

Anyway, I think draw is not a bad outcome for the Afghans as they were likely to lose to NZ.

It is not just about the ground conditions. What about the toilet water being used there? Is that the fault of Afghanistan too???

Im surprised that BCCI is allowing other boards to do direct deals with other agencies. Very unprofessional.

And anyway what you are saying hasn't been confirmed.

Two independent organisations are free to negotiate a deal. BCCI isn't going to stop it.

It has been reported by credible media.

It is not just about the ground conditions. What about the toilet water being used there? Is that the fault of Afghanistan too???

ACB hired someone outside of the BCCI. Who they hired what they did is their responsibility.

A venue banned by BCCI is being hired by ACB. Why?

ACB can't even Play any matches in India without permission of BCCI so definitely BCCI/ UP cricket board has to take blame .

They actually can hire any ground in India that's outside BCCI. This one is banned by BCCI still ACB hired it.

So BCCI and UPCA were not involved. Why should they take the blame?

ACB refused BCCI's offer of Bangalore and Kanpur.

So why will BCCI and UPCA take any blame?

Cricinfo has ACB chief on record saying that both Kanpur and Bangalore were offered as venues but the Afghans wanted to play here instead.

Thank you for the clarification and the confirmation of the BCCI involvement.

@Cricketjoshilla So the Greater Noida option was offered by the BCCI rather than the spin being put on in this thread that the Afghans entered negotiations with some random agencies themselves. Why is BCCI offering a venue that you claimed is banned by them?

It was offered way back in 2016. Not now.

s the stadium allowed to host international Cricket?
The Shahid Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex was built with an ambitious plan in the early 2010s as part of the Jaypee Group Sports City, which includes the iconic Buddh International Circuit, the only venue to host a F1 race in India.
The original plan included the stadium to have a capacity of 40,000, which would later be expanded to 100,000, but ultimately, it was built with its current 8,000 capacity. The venue first hosted the 2016 Duleep Trophy, in which it became the first-ever venue on Indian soil to host pink-ball games.
It was given international status by ICC in December 2016 to host full member games, meaning it could host test matches too.
In 2016, it was allocated as a home venue to the Afghanistan Cricket Board and hosted 5 ODIs and 6 T20Is till 2020. The ongoing Test match sees them return to the stadium after a gap of four years and for the first time post the COVID-19 lockdown.
Where Is The BCCI And UPCA?
In 2017, the ground was banned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for hosting private leagues which were not permitted by the Indian Cricket Governing Body and also had allegations of match-fixing on them. Since then, no BCCI affiliated match has taken place at the stadium.
In fact, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) also does not have any say in the stadium. The ground is owned and operated by the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority, who are overseeing all operational matters regarding the match.
The UPCA did help by sending a super sopper at the request of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB). A report by PTI also claimed that the Delhi District and Cricket Association (DDCA) rushed covers from the Arun Jaitley stadium to Greater Noida.

@DeadlyVenom

So ACB thought this was 2016?

It confirms ACB was offered better facilities

Sounds like ACB took the cheapest option.

you get what you pay for.

Incorrect. BCCI and UPCA has no control over this stadium. This is pvt owned by Jaypee.

This stadium was offered to Afghanistan in 2016. Not now.

Its banned by BCCI since 2017.

ACB didn't even hold meetings with UPCA.

This looks like a cut deal.

The noida facility is not managed by BCCI or state cricket board

Your post also mentioned BCCI itself offered Noida.

That is where the confusion is coming from. Why are BCCI offering a banned and unmanaged stadium?

If the BCCI offers 3 stadiums then the ACB probably thought they were equally as good and made a decision without knowing about the toilet water.

I can see that.

About the water thing, I grew with wells and not familiar with what the Noida situation is in Delhi.

In US and Canada there is only one water, period. It is used for all household purposes by most folks.

I haven't lived in the US or Canada just visited so I'm not sure what the house hold situation is, but I'm sure that the majority of people don't wash their dishes in the bathroom.
