The BBC has been given rare access to the vast system of highly secure facilities thought to be holding more than a million Muslims in China’s western region of Xinjiang.

Authorities there insist they are just training schools. But the BBC’s visit uncovers important evidence about the nature of the system and the conditions for the people inside it.

The BBC's China Correspondent John Sudworth sent this report.

This is going to end badly for China. Such methods to suppress religions have historically failed. Maybe 50 years, maybe 100 or 200, but this will not work.

Are they teaching them how to dance, do their hair and play basketball?

It will not, by 100th year Muslims in China would had forgotten about their religion completely and brainwashed to the core.
I dislike religion too and think teaching religion early on to a child is incorrect but this is basically brainwashing adults which will have major impact on their mental health.

The underlying issue is that the Communist Party is not going to accept any other organized power in the country which is not subservient to it. Unlike a democracy where there are many organized powers (multiple political parties, religious groups, corporations etc.) co-exist without being subservient because they to varying degrees accept elected governments, the Communist Party cannot/doesn't accept alternative organized powers.

Those who follow Islam do not believe it should be subservient to any other power.

One of them will outlast the other, and Islam has shown great staying power through history so I wouldn't bet that the Communist Party will succeed.

Communist China doesn't realize one thing and that is God is watching. Maybe God will give them a calamity for this grave injustice. We just have to wait and see.

Yeah.. but don't think God is going to do anything about that in this world..

You never know. God may decide to punish them or He may not. Let's hope that those poor Chinese Muslims come out of this mess.

Must be sad to be an Uighur. I guess they are not part of the Ummah given the support they (don't) receive from the guardians of the faith in Kashmir and Palestine.

Another simpleton who cannot think for himself.

Pakistanis do not support Kashmir or Palestine because of some ummah. Palestine is holy to Islam and Kashmir is part of Pakistan for Pakistanis and we have historical links with them and even Muslims in India. That is why we care for them and not have same feelings towards Uighurs. There is no historical, cultural or religious significant of Uighurs or the land they are in.

Maybe if you had to engage in a bit of critical thinking as a child rather than rote learn for board exams you might have been able to figure this out for yourself

Pakistan didn't exist before 1947 - so I'm not sure what ties Pakistan had with Kashmir - a kingdom that gave its soverignity to be part of India when Pakistan became hostile at the time of its creation.

Rather than trying to school others - perhaps its time you hit the books yourself.

Also I believe the Ummah does not discern whether a muslim is from the holy land or not. For a country that is founded on the principles of Islam - Pakistanis have a blinkered view on who is worthy of sympathy
