Interesting Documentaries

Louis Theorux(sp?) guy is class.

this is a good site to watch documentaries (legally)...snagfilms

most of em are "open-source"

Oh yeah, Louis Theroux and the Indian Gurus :)))

Oh man, by hook or by crook - please get a hold of that documentary !

Louis Theroux in Johannesburg - anyone remember that sicko talking about his crimes ?

'I get da knife and I put it here, around your MUDDA and your BRUDDA'. 'Then I put head in the oven'. 'I turn oven on'.

Or something like that :))) Sicko of the highest order.

Ah here it is.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Tl4EyAGtvlU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I love Louis's style, he doesn't come across as overly judgemental. LOL when he suggests the criminal is pretending - Sidney almost fainted at the notion !

just saw the yugoslavian docu, wow, cant believe how candid the interviews are.

:)) Serbs aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer, now their words have come back to haunt them as that documentary has been used in the international criminal court.

Thanks a lot for the links Markhor. Ive just finished watching this series, definitely eye opening. Surprised at how little i know of this conflict

I love it how he pretends to be blissfully understanding, stupid and monosyllabic so they are more keen to air their views :)) Very clever interviewer!

Cheers for the Yugoslavia material, might watch it tonight.

I love WW2 documentaries.

"WW2 in Colour" is awesome.

Also check out “In the name of God – The age of terror”

'The World at War', with Sir Laurence Olivier <3

a fitting result to their nationalistic chest thumping.

Can't believe I haven't seen this thread yet. Will def be checking some of these out.

Also - not sure about you all, but I love myself some good sports docos. And ESPN's 30 for 30 series have had some brilliant ones over the past year.

http://30for30.espn.com

Some of these have been possibly the best documentaries I have seen.

Highly recommend the following:

June 17th, 1994 - an 'experiential' documentary with no narrative. Just news snippets of all the extraordinary events that were happening on that day. Some of you may remember, it was the day OJ was on the run. Possibly one of the most gripping sports documentaries I have seen to date.

http://30for30.espn.com/film/june-17-1994.html

Without Bias - Imagine Michael Jordan never played in the NBA. Well, that pretty much happened in '86, when the number 2 draft for Boston Celtics Lenny Bias died the day after he was drafted. Quite tragic, and a massive loss for the world of basketball and sports.

http://30for30.espn.com/film/without-bias.html

Once Brothers - About the fall-out between Drazen Petrovic and Vlade Divac. Tragic, again.

http://30for30.espn.com/film/once-brothers.html

Operation Barbarossa one.

BTW 9.14 - I haven't heard Stalin's voice up until recently - he has quite a high pitched voice and is hardly intimidating as I imagined !

Even went into hiding when Operation Barbarossa started, he completely lost his nerve.

Just had a Louis Theroux binge on Amazon. 25 quid. They pretty much cover everything he's done up to now, apart from the Max Clifford episode, which is in the vault because Simon Cowell won't allow it to be shown. Booooooooooo! Can't wait for the DVDs to arrive though, going to start at the beginning, a few episodes a week.

Looking forward to seeing the Ultra Zionists one again. Bunch of loonies.

americas most hated family is also right up there, it was so good he did a sequel to it.

I EXTREMELY highly recommend everybody taking the time to watch this documentary...It'll boggle your mind!!!!! It's scary how little we know about money and how bleak our future looks!!

Sorry International People - Use torrents for these:

On now for UK people on the BBC:

The Crusades (Avoid if you don't understand context and objectivity)
Putin and Russia

Fascinating documentaries, esp. the one about Russia with interviews from the top top members of the US, UK and Russia.

Make of them what you will.

the BBC did a fine documentary on Stalin for BBC4; He was quite the Ghundaa/Gangsta before entering Politics.

His oratory, that you remarked upon, was commented on by certain historians, as being the Soviet Union equivalent, of a man with a really thick accent from Wigan becoming the Prime Minister of Great Britain during WW2...

Oh and WW2 in HD Colour, is showing on the main Discovery Channel in the UK - PVR it.

Putin and Russia is excellent, Putin is running Russia as a mafia boss. He was a former KGB agent and the constant switcheroo of places with Medvedev is becoming difficult to keep up with.

^ Agreed; and I think as a former KGB agent, his actions are ridiculously close to what seemed surreal satire in the Simpsons:

If you have any interest in International Politics and want a glimpse into how things are decided behind the scenes and also want to form your own opinion here is:

Putin, Russia and The West - Interviews from Top Ministers from the US, Russia included with differing opinions; Both Pro-Russian and Anti-Russian supporters, dislike it - Which can only be a good thing!

Also incredibly useful is episode 3 - War, if you want to gain a different perspective on the Syrian situation with regards to the Russian and US role and their thinking...

Sarkozy drafting a ceasefire draft document between Georgia and Russia off the top of his head is surreal; You couldn't make it up!

There was a second and third part to this

Sergei Ivanov just comes across as incredibly smug, a face you would not want to stop punching.

Sakashvili annoyed me the most; What an impulsive idiot, thinking they even had any chance of becoming the Caucuses version of Israel! Tool. The US told him not to start anything, but no he didn't just return fire he was gearing up for a full assault hoping the US would help him with their full force if necessary.

The US rightly smacked him down;

Condoleeza and her Russian Counterpart getting bored with the Nutcracker and finding they both shared a different passion was interesting... Looked like they liked each other alot...

Yeah the Israel-Palestine analogy was an 'eyebrows up' moment.

Is that a lawyer I hear knocking on your door :))

No there was definitely something there...but 'Condi' also comes across as rather irritating.

Lavrov, the Foreign Minister - not one you'd want to meet in a dark alley.

so true, sakashvili seems so naive to be the leader of a country, perhaps his only qualifications were being able to speak decent english and french (which he made a point to highlight  ).

Much much worse; An extradition to America and the customary "lawful" "interrogation" by the US Authorities.

Glad you agree; i thought i might be seeing things. Condoleeza is irritating, hell they all are, save for Dimitri and Powell. (despite that awful Iraq Weapons UN presentation back in the day)

I love the human nature angles of diplomacy as a friend of mine is training to hopefully one day be a British one! He's Asian though...

Esp. the way Dimitri puiblicly said he went with Sakashvili to have wine and dinner; Actually they went clubbing! From :moyo to :akhtar

ElRaja - Too much like a hyper-active little brother given a shot of sugar in the form of the Georgian Presidency.

How harsh were the Eastern Bloc in dissing Merkel by bring up Germany and the 2nd world war; Below the belt!

Sarkozy's freestyle-draft + Marathon-diplomacy session at ending a war is still just too surreal...

Putin is just too menacing; Dude is pure balls of ice-cool serbian steel.

Why can't we have this type of collaborative-quality documentary about, say India and Pakistan during their wars or maybe a recent event, such as Kargil?

That was such a ridiculous statement to make, and the German Foreign Minister even said in a rather menacing tone 'I heard language I never want to hear again'.

I hope our own Foreign Minister can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Lavrov and Westerwelle. The Foreign Office is probably the most important cabinet position after Finance Minister/Chancellor, and the most 'traditional' ministry. Although her 'old wine in an even older bottle' line was pretty good :))

Merkel handled it well.

Bar the appalling acts in the Former Yugoslavia, Europe has remained relatively peaceful and such words are not helpful in moving forward.

True, and I can see why David Milliband was there; Now compare him to Hague? It just doesn't match up whatever failings Millliband has.

Still; at least it's not Boris... :afridi

Watching Once Brothers and it is so damn interesting. Especially Divac's early years in LA. Really don't have to be a basketball fan or even a sports fan to appreciate this doc.

I quite liked Ivanov actually...the Condi thing was jokes...as for Saakashvili he comes across very naive in the doc and really was frankly in thinking there was going to be an end result that favoured Georgia...it was an impulsive move and as stated he took the bait...Powell pretty much told him that the US was not interested in South Ossetia or Abkhazia...and Condi told him not to do anything...

The Russians were bullying Georgia but not much you can do as a small country really...

The German opposition thing sounded pretty nasty and uncalled for...but Sarkozy certainly comes off very well here...quite liked the British guy stating they were caught out on the rock thing...

Medevdev also comes off quite well...Putin's no nonsense approach is quite likable in a lot of ways...the bit at the factory and the meeting with the Oligarchs was brilliant...

The bits about the Orange Revolution were really interesting...Kuchma's convo with Putin on no bloodshed was very revealing...

Not that knowledgeable to state how partial or impartial the series is...but it was nice to hear from a lot of big names...shame they couldn't get the man himself...

Restrepo - Fantastic documentary about American soldiers in Korangal Valley, Afghanistan.

I thought he was gonna do the sequel to that pornography documentary he did a while back.

Not that I would be watching of course !

Louis's documentary on autism was absolutely brilliant. A must-see.

Louis Theroux on Dementia - outstanding but so incredibly sad. Gary seemed have his wits about him, even Nancy to an extent was lively and cheerful but their seemingly ordinary exterior disguises their condition. The old woman who could not remember the words - table, apple and penny, that was awful to see her go through.

I'd rather be shot than be in a situation like that. I really hope science can find a method of prevention or cure for this terrible disease.

Yes the dementia episode was even better. Perfectly found the balance between amusing, warming moments, heartbreaking trauma and the potential nothingness of being.

Extreme Love has truly been one of his finest projects to date, and that's saying something.

Modern day legend.

totally agree with you, i think of myself as fairly cold and insensitive when it comes to tv shows but there was a split second where that old lady who could only say "golly" recognised her son, and gave him a hug, i can honestly say that was such a moving moment. what a horrible horrible disease.

louis is a legend, no doubt.

just saw bbc doc about japanese spies in britain, the fall of singapore, anyone interested in british, japanese, ww2 history should defo check it out on iplayer.

Louis Theroux has quite a monopoly in this thread. Anyone watch his documentary last night ?

Was revisiting the pornography industry, after his 1997 documentary. Regularly had to change the channel as it got rather graphic :moyo

A few things I noticed was that most of these porn stars seem really damaged from before they started out. This just messes them up even more. Also I wouldn't be surprised if many of the women are prostitutes as well, earning extra money on the side.

Hope the little girl doesn't end up in porn but looking at her mum I think she will make sure that doesn't happen. It is key if there's a stable family unit at home. There was a common denominator with a lot of them - one grew up in a foster home, another's father has been incarcerated her whole life.

Oh and Mr Thorax :)))

will take time to see this. looks very interesting and if possible also add up some cricket documentaries also

Oh and Mr Thorax :)))

Was a funny moment. But that Rob Black guy was an absolute nutter. A weird and perverted individual.

I quite liked Tommy Gunn, and it seemed that Louis did as well. Louis always ends up making friends with some of his unusual yet nice interviewees :))

I still don't think either of Theroux's (excellent) porn documentaries are as good as 'Louis and the Brothel'. Amusing, fascinating and quite touching, but also tragic and disturbing.

i agree with you, i think that's because career prostitutes do it to earn a day to day living and pay a huge chunk to there pimps who usually dominate their lives hence they find it harder to escape making for more interesting stories usually.

successful pornstars, female at least, make a lot of money quickly, dont have to worry about pimps and usually move on when they want.

There was that awful woman employer who basically said that she didn't want her children to get into the industry and grow up to be whores (like the female workers). So she is happy to exploit the female workers but wouldn't want her children involved in the industry ?

Serious hypocrisy from her.

Yeah that office woman was horrendous.

Interesting about the porn star Tash, who is a women's psychology undergrad from UCLA. So probably a mostly respectable person. She said she chooses to work in the profession because it is the only job in America where women get paid more than men.

I only caught a bit of the porn one, felt very sorry for a lot of the porn stars especially that girl who wanted to do a scene with 5 guys where they would then ejac on her face. For 2K!!!

Made me very sad, seemed like a reasonably intelligent sensible but valued money more than her dignity and respect.

Oh yeah who was that girl's boyfriend ?

Monte I think - says he didn't like what her girlfriend was doing but doesn't feel strongly enough to stop living off her money and staying in the relationship.

Saw Bus 174 which imo is a fantastic documentary...

Its about a street kid in Rio who holds hostages on a bus...no reconstructions...all the footage was real as the media covered the whole ordeal...

It essentially is a documentary about the hijacker and pushes the idea that violence is an attempt by the invisible to make themselves visible...it looks at the failures and brutality of police, prison, family and the perception the normal populace have etc that contribute to creating men like Sandro the hijacker...

Criticisms are that it essentially is a sympathetic portrait of the criminal which I don't think is a bad thing...his situation is tragic...

Other than being an interesting doc content wise it is brilliantly directed...(the same guy directed Elite Squad)...its better for most of us cos we dont know the ending...one of the better docs iv seen lately...

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/BYUBptIhnVE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Btw if you do choose to watch it there will be times when the subtitles end up out of sync but it doesn't stay out of sync for long...

America's Animal Hoarder: Horror at the Zoo

The sleepy town of Zanesville, Ohio became the centre of a media storm in October 2011 when 48 animals were found roaming a residential area, and shot dead after police realised they could not control the situation.

The animals killed included 18 tigers, 17 lions and 8 bears, and they belonged to Terry Thompson.

Thompson was later found dead on his farm, partially eaten by his own animals. This film tells the compelling story of this bizarre incident, while exploring the events in Thompson's past which led up to it.

With revealing police radio archive and exclusive interviews, this is a gripping account of what happened when one man's obsession with dangerous animals spiralled out of control.

True Stories showcases the best feature-length documentaries.

UNDER COVER AT THE NEWS OF THE WORLD

For two decades, 'Fake Sheikh' Mazher Mahmood was responsible for a series of sensational undercover stings - some acclaimed, others much criticised.

His typical modus operandi was to pose as a wealthy Arab, prompting indiscretions from his celebrity victims by offering them highly paid jobs or other inducements.

This programme reveals the unauthorised inside story of how the famous undercover team at the News of the World used greed, alcohol, sex, money and fame to tempt their targets into indiscretions that made front-page news.

Targets included The Countess of Wessex, the then England manager Sven Goran Eriksson, and jockey Kieren Fallon.

The film centres on the revelations of the Fake Sheikh's loyal right-hand-man, who worked with him from 2001 to 2009.

In his appearance before the Leveson Inquiry, Mahmood insisted his investigations were all prompted by reliable tips and were in the public interest, exposing either criminality, moral wrong-doing or hypocrisy. He firmly denies charges of entrapment.

The programme reveals details of some of the most notorious News of the World stings and includes interviews with some of those who were stung, including Kieron Fallon and George Galloway MP.

THE BOY WHOSE SKIN FELL OFF

Jonny Kennedy is a man with a lot to do. He's got just four months to move home, befriend Nell McAndrew, fly a plane, visit Downing Street - and plan his own funeral.

36-year-old Jonny is an extraordinary man with a terrible condition - Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) - which means his skin literally falls off at the slightest touch, leaving his body covered in agonising sores and leading to a final fight against skin cancer. In 2003, Jonny decided to work with filmmaker Patrick Collerton to document his last months in an uplifting, confounding and provocatively humorous story of a singular man.

Although it never shies away from the grim reality of his illness, this moving film is a celebration of a life lived to the full. Whether chatting up Nell McAndrew or choosing a coffin with a surprising baked-bean can motif, Jonny displays a devilish humour, an acute intelligence and an unwillingness to suffer his fate, or fools, gladly.

When it was first shown, The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off captivated nearly five million viewers and helped to raise £500,000 for the EB charity DebRA.

On an unrelated note, I found this the other night -

The Two Escobars....

Truly a fantastic documentary...this is a must watch for anyone interested in football and its relationship with organised crime...

The doc deals with two main characters...Pablo Escobar the drug kingpin and Andres Escobar someone seen as potentially Colombia's best ever footballer...both of them were gunned down in during the 90s...

During the early 90s Colombia had an outstanding set of footballers which was coupled with drug traffickers taking control of football teams...this ensured the clubs could keep their best players and attract foreign talent...it proved good for the likes of Escobar who could launder money through the club...

The Cali cartel also took control of a club...it discusses one example of the corruption involved...Cali paid off a ref...Medellin lose...ref gets murdered after the game...Cali make good money off gambling against Medellin...

This doesn't detract from the fact that Nacional Medellin are a legitimate team as they win the Copa Libertadores...the national team also was developing into a top team...

Its show how Escobar developed football by putting money into the slums through housing and facilities...this led to him being friends with many of the footballers...it shows his Robin Hood status...it goes through his eventual problems and how violence increases...

Football however in a fractious country wrought with crime and violence acts as a unifier...a form of identity for Colombians...a paramilitary jokes about watching a match with a FARC rebel cos at that moment they are all the same...football becomes the pride of Colombia as they hammer Argentina 5-0 away to qualify for the world cup...having entered to jeers of 'drug dealers'...they were applauded off the pitch by Argentinian fans when they won the game...

Football could curb violence by preaching values and tolerance, a sanctuary of unity...this however all changed ironically with Pablo's death...an already violent society became more violent because with the boss gone the rules were gone and everyone wanted to be the new boss...disorder had become even more anarchaic...

Andres is presented as a well behave, religious boy who wanted nothing more than to help his country...prior to the '94 world cup he was due to go to sign for Milan...

There were some true eye openers from the World Cup...all the team had received death threats and were naturally worried...

They lost their first game 3-1 and consequently Chonto Herrera one of the starters got a phone call and was told his brother had been murdered...the players got to their hotel to find on their TV screen a demand for a player Bennabas to be dropped otherwise they would all be killed...Bennabas was one of the best players and every states the reason for him being dropped is because the Cali traffickers wanted their players playing in order to increase their sale value...Escobar respected football but the new guys didn't...

The next game involved the infamous own goal by Andres...something which eventually cost him his life when he returned to Medellin...its suggested that Andres would have been alive under Pablo but not under Carlos Casteno paramilitary leader who had filled the vacuum...

Its superbly filmed with some excellent archival footage...and is truly a tragic tale...theres a lot to be tearful about especially when they read out a message Andres had regarding the game...they have excellent access to players...the likes of Valderrama and Asprilla...they interview family members of both the deceased...the President at the time...other cartels and even Popeye who was Pablo's right hand man who openly states that he has killed over 250 people...

The 90s in Colombia was a truly anarchaic time and this doc captures that brilliantly and it shows the rise and fall of Colombian football...a must watch for those interested in Latin American politics and those interested in footie...
